Part 1 of 2. Bret and Shira descend the nine circles of hell to meet their next subject: the devil. The duo may not care for his arithmetic but they are fans of Satan's film appearances. Up first is Shira's pick, Bedazzled. If there's one thing the prince of darkness loves as much as sinnin', it's spiritually binding contracts and Elizabeth Hurley's devil is the ultimate negotiator. Come for the hijinks and stay for the remixes. It's not that hot down here!

On today's IGN The Fix: Games, The PS5 recently got a big firmware update that, among other things, added the ability to expand system storage. Now some experts are saying the new software also improves the performance of select games. In the latest Digital Foundry Direct Weekly show, the crew broke down the differences between the PS5's performance on the new and old firmware. Digital Foundry went on to explain that the performance differences are very minor. The new firmware was causing select games, Control and Devil May Cry 5, to run about 2 to 3% faster than the old firmware. This led to an increase in framerate, only by about 1 to 2 FPS. Epic Games is no stranger to a Battle Royale-based collaboration, but prices for its latest clothing line deal with luxury fashion brand Balenciaga are likely to make even diehard Fortnite fans' eyes water. The Fortnite x Balenciaga collaboration features a number of in-game cosmetics that fans can purchase from within the item shop. However, it's the price of Balenciaga's IRL clothing range that is sure to make heads turn. Today's episode is brought to you by Movies Anywhere. Brian has all that in your Daily Fix!

For the second year running PlayStation unleashed the big guns in Showcase form, but after skipping E3 and Gamescom, what did Sony have to show for it?First up, KOTOR is getting a full remake, and it's coming to both PS5 and PC! We then saw Project Eve, a stylish action game evoking that big Devil May Cry and Bayonetta energy. Next up was Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, a Borderlands spin-off with a fantasy flare, gameplay for Square Enix's Forspoken, and a full trailer for the long-awaited Alan Wake remaster. GTAV received its inevitable trailer, and we saw more from Ghostwire Tokyo, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, and Bloodhunt. Releasing next week, we saw more from Deathloop, the Radiohead Kid A Mnesia Exhibition, beautiful animal-possesor Tchia, and confirmation of a remastered collection of Uncharted Lost Legacy and Uncharted 4 coming to both PS5 and PC.Gran Turismo 7 revved its considerable engine and looked beautiful while doing so, before Insomniac shocked the world with the announcement of Marvel's Wolverine AND Spider-Man 2. It'll feature both Peter Parker and Miles Morales Spider-Men, and not only seems to confirm the inclusion of Kraven The Hunter, but DEFINTIELY confirms Venom. Finally the highly anticipated God of War Ragnarok was shown in detail, with Kratos and Atreus preparing for both Ragnarok and an inevitable showdown with the god of thunder himself, Thor.#PlayStation #PlayStationShowcase #PS5--------------------------Subscribe for more wonderful video game content from Ben Potter, Peter Austin and Ashton Matthews!TripleJump provides video coverage of video games - including top ten lists featuring current gen platforms (PS4 & PS5, Xbox One & Xbox Series X/Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch and PC), retro consoles (PlayStation, Nintendo, Xbox and Sega), as well as Worst Games Ever, video game challenges, launch games videos, first impressions, podcasts, livestreams and much, much more.Careers, contacts, and more information can be found on our website: http://tripleju.mp⇨ Official PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo digital storefront credit (and Minecraft Minecoins): https://triplejump.gg/⇨ Patreon: https://Patreon.com/TeamTripleJump⇨ Twitch: https://Twitch.tv/TeamTripleJump⇨ Merchandise: https://triplejumpshop.com/⇨ Livestream VODs: http://tripleju.mp/vods⇨ Podcast: https://play.acast.com/s/triplejump⇨ Twitter: https://Twitter.com/TeamTripleJump⇨ Facebook: https://Facebook.com/TeamTripleJump⇨ Discord: http://Bit.ly/TeamTripleJumpFollow the team on social media:• Ben: http://www.twitter.com/Confused_Dude & Confused_Dude on PSN• Peter: http://www.twitter.com/ThatPeterAustin & https://instagram.com/ThatPeterAustin• Ashton: http://www.twitter.com/ScrambledAshton & https://instagram.com/ScrambledAshtonFollow our friends!• Billy Ray Walrus: https://twitter.com/BillyRayBotrus• Rules Boss: https://twitter.com/ThisIsRulesBoss• Barbara Pis: https://twitter.com/pis_barbaraThe TripleJump Podcast is hosted by Acast, but available on Spotify, iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, and more!Acast: https://play.acast.com/s/triplejump See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

I should have been the one to fill your podcast with light! Welcome back to the podcast! Today, we're going to be talking about Devil May Cry, the first game in the DMC series that defined a genre in a way. Character action games of today all have a bit of DNA (the D stands for “Devil” here, presumably) from this game in them, whether that's in level design, unlockable moves/combos or just the focus on stylish combat, usually with an accompanying rating system, and so going back to see how they were all implemented in the first DMC game was quite an experience. An experience made all the more unexpected by how well the first game manages all these systems. Truly, the level of competency on display here for what is more or less the first try is impressive and makes me question whether this game really was designed that well, or if the genre hasn't pushed that far forward in the last twenty years. Presentation and questionable voice acting aside, even the game's visual style with it's gothic architecture, quietly grotesque enemy design, and the anime sword biker detective himself, Dante, has gone down as nothing short of iconic in the world of games. We're going to be talking about the strength in simplicity in a combat system, the elements of old-style design that do manage to hold this game back on a modern playthrough, and how we think that castles are…pretty cool. Thank you for joining us again this week. We may have played the remastered version of this game, but it did still feel like the proverbial blast from the past to pick it up again after nearly two decades. How do you feel the game holds up? Is this game your favorite in the series, or was it dethroned by one of its many sequels? Do you want to make some kind of meme about our podcast featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series? Let us know in the comments, or over on our Discord server where we talk about the games and take suggestions. Next time, we're going to be taking on another game that's been remastered in the form of Super Mario 3D World (+ Bowser's Fury), the Switch port of the Wii U Mario game that presumably very few people ended up actually playing in its original incarnation. We hope you'll check that one out too.

This is the strongest podcast ever built! Welcome back to the podcast! Today, we're going to be talking about another expansive JRPG in the form of Xenoblade Chronicles. A series that debuted on the Wii, and took off, like several before it, due to its protagonist being included in Super Smash Bros., Xenoblade is an RPG with a subgenre that is really tricky to pin down. The overarching game, with its characters and story, feels like a traditional epic JRPG in the same way that a Final Fantasy game does, but its mechanics between combat and its quest system feel ripped straight out of a more Western MMO. With an emphasis on cooldown management and positioning based attacks, there isn't much like it in the single-player realm of the genre, though the staple classes of Tank/DPS/Healer are all present here. That isn't to say there isn't room for experimentation, and the depth present in the game's systems are arguably one of the most engaging parts of playing this. And if you aren't here for the mechanical depth and number crunching, the game makes a pretty significant impression aesthetically as well. With an emphasis on huge vistas (which also translate into a large overall world map) and a soundtrack that kicks way more ass than you would expect, it doesn't really pull its punches in this area either. Obviously the game has its flaws, and it's been polarizing if public opinion can be believed, but it's definitely worth checking out if only for the couple of things it does absolutely incredibly well. We're going to be talking about the mechanical interactions the game almost hides away behind a probably-too-strong protagonist character, how the game's emphasis on character plays into it both narratively and mechanically in an extremely satisfying way, and we pitch the movie that the expansion should have been and cast the really underutilized Composite Jason Alexander. Thank you for listening this week! We have been (read: Chad has been) putting off playing this game for a while due to just how long it is, but it was surprisingly easy to sink into the game once it started. What side of the “love it or hate it” spectrum do you fall on? Did Sharla's incredibly stupid costume design and weird posture make you quit playing this game the second she appeared on screen? Let us know over in our Discord or in the comments! Next time, prepare to have your dark soul filled with light, because we're going to be playing Devil May Cry (the first one), so we hope you'll join us for that!

This week on the podcast, we're adding the first game in long running genre defining franchise: It's Devil May Cry! You play as Dante who is trying to prevent the evil Mundus from coming into this plane of existence. The stylish action game created a new kind of hack and slash game. It also is part of the first wave of really good PS2 releases. Where did it land our Endless List? Find out on the podcast or check out our Medium page!

Sorry, I had a hard time phrasing this question, so it's prolly a bit confusing. Maybe an example might help. For me I would say Kirby Star Allies. Although I have issues with Star Allies, I don't think it's a bad game. I picked it because I feel that it makes the Kirby franchise, or at least the modern Kirby games, seem a lot more "Kiddie" than it actually is, and because it's the main Kirby game on switch I feel that it has spread this impression to a lot of people. It's very tempting for me to write down a full lecture on why I think that is right here, but I think that's enough for you all to hopefully get an idea of what I mean by the question. InfiniteBlue — 06/23/2021 The Devil May Cry franchise has two of these. The first of which is the DmC reboot, which was so tonally discordant with the rest of the series with its edgelord "hollywood-ification" of the plot and characters. It's a decent action game mechanically and would have been well received if they simply... didn't call it DmC. Then there's DMC2, which is a dull and bad video game by any measure. You'd be doing yourself a favor by going straight from 1 to 3, it's that unremarkable. twodollarhero — 06/23/2021 I think a lot of the more recent Super Monkey Ball games are a good example of this. I've been playing SMB2 again lately (because I'm so hyped for Banana Mania) and bouncing from that (no pun intended) to something like Banana Blitz HD is a jarring experience. The more modern entries of the series - which vastly outnumber what fans consider to be the “good” games - totally misrepresent what the games are about. Suddenly, there's jumping mechanics and every level is littered with guard rails or worst of all, control gimmicks. The series is about fun, challenging arcade gameplay with pitch perfect controls… and most of the games in the series at this point aren't about that anymore. SpiderShan — 06/23/2021 I guess I'd have to go with Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New World for Wii. There are quite a few “Tales of” games and spin-offs and Tales of Symphonia for GameCube is considered one of the best. I know it's my favorite in the series. I was hyped to play the sequel but they decided to change a lot of the gameplay including the use of monsters in place of human companions. You play as characters completely unrelated to the original game and the characters that I loved from the first game were “guest characters” in the sequel that would come and go and were a hollow shell of what they were before. It's such a departure from what made the original so special. ChrisHL94Rewind

Every artist uses "inspiration" to create their art including researching and referencing other existing material. But what happens when an artist uses such existing material directly? That's what Judy Juracek author of 1996's book and CD "Surfaces" has asked the court, in a lawsuit that accuses video game publisher Capcom of using her photographs directly in games like Resident Evil and Devil May Cry without her permission. Is she right? What does the copyright act say, and how does it work in a circumstance like this one? The livestreaming service is testing Follower Emotes that let broadcasters hand out up to five emotes just for following their channels. You can only use the emotes in the channels where you earned them, unlike subscription emotes, but this lets you show support for a streamer without having to use generic or third-party icons.Certain Affiliates and Partners will get these follow-specific emotes as part of a beta. The feedback from the test should lead to a wider rollout later in 2021.There will be an extra motivation to pay, mind you. Twitch is introducing Animated Emotes for Tier 1 subscribers that, as the name implies, add a dash of movement. Creators will have up to five animated icons they can either produce from scratch or quickly build using canned animations like shaking, spinning and "rave." Partners will have access in weeks (including big names like Seum), while Affiliates should see them by the end of 2021. And yes, Twitch is aware they could be dangerous or annoying for some viewers — you'll have the option to turn them off.Channel owners will have an easier time managing emotes through a new Library that provides control over every approved emote, whether or not it's active. A streamer can retire or revive emotes without having to seek re-approval or otherwise walk through the upload process. This could be particularly helpful for holidays and other times when themed emotes are popular. The Library will be available to all Affiliates and Partners, but access will be phased in over the course of a few months.Twitch said the emote updates would help mark its 10th anniversary, and that there was "so much more planned" for the milestone. Don't be surprised if you see other sizeable changes, even if Twitch has already announced a few notable examples in advance.Angel - This seems like good news all around! Not just for viewers and streamers but for emote artists. Whats your take on this rollout.GeorgeNotFound's scuffed hot tub stream shatters Pokimane's Twitch recordFirst from DexertoMinecraft YouTuber and Twitch megastar GeorgeNotFound shocked fans with an extremely scuffed hot tub stream that ended up shattering a viewership record previously held by Pokimane. On June 2, GeorgeNotFound took to Twitter to announce he was having an “epic hot tub stream” and fans absolutely ate it up.things got off to a super rocky start, as a hole in the tub started causing water to leak out of the pool and into his house. Despite this, he persevered and eventually got into the tub, albeit with clothes on.Crazily, this stunt resulted in over 350,000 viewers, demolishing Pokimane and OfflineTV's hot tub stream record that pulled 100K.Throughout the stream, George would spin a wheel with a bunch of humiliating tasks on it and whichever it landed on he would perform. These included the ever awkward “change into a new outfit” task, which poked fun at female streamers who often switch up their bikinis throughout a broadcast to even drinking the water in the tub. While the whole broadcast didn't end up lasting too long, it did create some pretty entertaining moments, kicked off some new merch sales and broke the previous hot tub viewership record.Rebel - This is obviously a pretty funny take on the hot tub meta. How do you feel about the overall shift to this type of stream?Twitch Manages To Get Out Some 'Disappointment' With Music Industry Over Latest Round Of DMCA ClaimsTwitch recently sent out an email that it had received roughly 1,000 additional DMCA takedown notices, almost all of them again over music playing in the background of recorded Twitch videos.Said Twitch in its email on Friday: “We are committed to being more transparent with you about DMCA. We recently received a batch of DMCA take down notifications with about 1,000 individual claims from music publishers.“All of the claims are for the VODs and the vast majority target streamers listening to background music while playing video games or IRL streaming. Based on the number of claims we believe these rights holders used automated tools to scan and identify copyrighted music in creators VODs and clips, which means that they will likely send further notices."Of course they will. Twitch invited them to when it showed itself to be a willing partner in treating Twitch creators like a testing ground for DMCA cluster bombs. There are platforms out there that manage to both treat DMCA requests seriously and also provide some protection, or at least communication, to its users.A few tools for creators aside, Twitch's inaction on behalf of its creative community amounted essentially to greenlighting ever more DMCA takedowns from the music industry. Any surprise at that by the Amazon-owned company is laughable. But this neutered, throwaway line from that same email is simply maddening.“This is our first such contact from the music publishing industry (there can be several owners for a single piece of music) and we are disappointed that they decided to send takedowns when we were willing and ready to speak to them about solutions.”Jacqie - Twitch acting like they are willing to talk here is kind of laughable right? They went ahead before with their music service and didnt engage the industry then to meet their needs. Do you feel like they are being truthful here or just playing a bit of the victim to avoid some backlash?Tech/Gaming News - Brought to you by The Guy from the sneak commercial OFFICIALLY ROGUEGuardians of the Galaxy game to be announced during E3 2021 – Explica .coFour years have passed since Kotaku reported that Eidos Montreal, a subsidiary of Square Enix and creators of the Deus Ex video game saga, was working on a Guardians of the Galaxy title. Although the information was forgotten due to the lack of official information – or more leaks – it seems that we will finally see the game during E3 2021. And it is that Square Enix announced that it will hold an event to present its next news.Even more important, at the digital conference the presence of Eidos Montreal is confirmed with a World Premiere. That is, the announcement of a completely new project. If the above clues weren't enough, we should point out that Jason Schreier, a Bloomberg journalist and one of the most trusted sources in the industry, all but confirmed it.Now, Schreier's words have great importance because it was he himself who signed the Kotaku report in 2017. Before joining the ranks of Bloomberg, the aforementioned journalist was part of the aforementioned video game website. On the other hand, we must not forget that Square Enix and Marvel have previously worked on Marvel's Avengers, a proposal that unfortunately disappointed the vast majority.Rebel - First off are you more of DC or Marvel fan? Are you apprehensive at all for this title due to the way Avengers failed to meet many peoples expectations? The Twitter Blue subscription service starts rolling out ThursdayFrom the Verge,Twitter has officially announced Twitter Blue, a paid subscription service that offers access to new features like undoing tweets and viewing threads in an easier to digest “Reader Mode.” Starting Thursday, it will roll out first in Canada and Australia, where the subscription will cost $3.49 CAD or $4.49 AUD per month, respectively. We already had a good idea of what features to expect from Twitter Blue thanks to sleuthing from app researcher Jane Manchun Wong, but now Twitter has detailed everything the service includes.A new undo send feature gives you the option of retracting your tweets before they actually go live, and you can set a timer for undoing your tweets that can last up to 30 seconds. A Bookmark Folders feature lets you group saved tweets to make them easier to find later. “Reader Mode” lets you keep up with threads by “turning them into easy-to-read text” and mashing together tweets into one page. Other Twitter Blue features are purely aesthetic: it adds new color theme options as well as the ability to change the color of Twitter's app icon.Offering a paid subscription service is a significant change to Twitter's business model that the company has been considering for some time. Previously, the company has relied mainly on advertising for its revenue, but intense competition from Facebook and Snapchat's ad businesses, and pressure from investors has pushed it to explore new sources of revenue.Angel - Are any of these services something you would consider paying for?Now You Can Mine Crypto From Your Norton Antivirus AppEver wondered why it was impossible to shut down Norton antivirus? Well the time has come for an answer. Norton was preparing us to mine Ethereum. From gizmodoFirst spotted by BleepingComputer, the new Norton Crypto feature is being added to the Norton 360 antivirus app this week as an opt-in early adopter program designed to help people more easily get into crypto mining. And with the world of crypto mining littered with traps and scams, Norton Crypto does seem to offer a few advantages compared to a more DIY approach.Because many antivirus apps flag crypto-mining apps as malware, Norton claims that by building Norton Crypto into Norton 360, users can enjoy increased safety by being able to mine Ethereum without having to disable their antivirus software.Unfortunately, while Norton Crypto relies on your computer's GPU to mine Ethereum, it's unclear if each computer will be mining on its own (which is somewhat unlikely given the difficult of solving a hash with a single PC), or potentially joining a shared mining pool made up of other Norton Crypto users (in which Norton may or may not be taking a cut). And with Ethereum set to switch from a proof-of-work to a proof-of-stake validation method in the not-too-distant future, it's hard to say how Norton Crypto will be affected. But for those who've been considering dipping their toes into the crypto world and don't mind installing a potentially intrusive antivirus app, Norton Crypto could be an interesting way to learn.Jacqie - Do you see this as a positive or a negative for the crypto space?FootNotes- Other Notable News-E3's all digital showcase is set to take place this week starting on June 12th. One of the most anticipated events on the show will be nintendos showcase where we could get a look at the next generation of the switch console but we will have to wait until tuesday the 15th for it.- An artist named Judy Juracek is suing Capcom over what she claims are stolen textures and images used in Resident Evil 4 and Devil May Cry. Juracek published the images in a book back in 1996 and copyrighted them asking that anyone looking to use them contact for the right to use them.- An among us crew member shaped chicken nugget was sold this week for nearly $100,000 usd. What the buyer plans to do with it I will never know.- The Atari VCS console is set to hit retailers next week. Starting on June 15th the retro console and cloud gaming hardware will hit the shelves of most major electronics retailers for a price of $299 USD. If you want to know more about the atari console I wrote an article about it and will publish the link in the description once the live show ends.Entertainment News -Discovery announces new name of WarnerMedia merger: Warner Bros. DiscoveryIn our first story a media conglomerate gets original with their new name. From the vergeDiscovery is merging with WarnerMedia, and it's now announced a new name for the combined company: Warner Bros. Discovery. According to The Wall Street Journal, the name was first revealed during a staff meeting today. The merger was announced last month. AT&T said it would spin off WarnerMedia — the entertainment giant containing Warner Bros., HBO, DC Comics, and CNN, among many others — and that Discovery would take over the new company. But they didn't have a new name prepared on the day the deal was announced.AT&T and Discovery expect the merger to wrap up in mid-2022, assuming it clears regulatory hurdles. AT&T shareholders will own 71 percent of the new company, so it's really more like WarnerMedia is being freed from AT&T and picking up Discovery along the way.The hope is that the combined entertainment giant can become an even bigger player in streaming than the two are independently today. WarnerMedia runs HBO Max, which has been fairly successful so far, though it remains smaller than Netflix and Disney Plus.Rebel - It looks like they are looking to grow their streaming properties here. Do you think we need more separate streaming entertainment or would you like to see more consolidation to 1 or 2 platforms?'John Wick 4' Adds Donnie Yen To Upcoming Keanu Reeves FilmKeanu Reeves's upcoming action, John Wick 4, has added martial arts superstar Donnie Yen to the cast of the movie.According to a new report, martial arts superstar Donnie Yen has joined the cast of the upcoming Keanu Reeves film. Donnie Yen is one of the most successful actors from the east with numerous acting credits in his native country including the Ip Man films and numerous other action films. In the United States, the actor is perhaps best known for roles in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, and the live-action remake of Mulan. In the film Donnie Yen is said to play an old friend of John Wick, sharing the same history and many of the same enemies. On the casting, director Chat Stahelski seemed happy to have the martial arts icon on board for his film:“We are very lucky to have Donnie Yen join the franchise. I am looking forward to working with him in this exciting new role.”Angel - Are you a John Wick or IP man fan? How do you feel about the casting?Zack Snyder Would Cast New Actors For 'The Dark Knight Returns' MovieJustice League director Zack Snyder revealed that he'd cast new actors if he directed a cinematic version of The Dark Knight Returns.Although it seems like Zack Snyder's days working with Warner Bros. are over, the director has always maintained that directing a live-action adaptation of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns is a dream project for him. He previously explained that he's obsessed with the idea and that he'd do it as a one-off movie rather than spin a franchise out of it. But in a more recent interview Snyder opened up about how he'd approach the story.Snyder confessed that he'd cast new actors to play Batman and Superman in The Dark Knight Returns instead of bringing back Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, just to make sure it was entirely its own thing. He also compared the vision he has for the graphic novel to his take on Watchmen, saying it would be really frame-accurate.Jac - Is using unknown actors something that you would get behind for something like The Bat?BOLD PREDICTIONS★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
On today's IGN The Fix: Games, the Cyberpunk 2077 devs made their own glitch montages out of years of development gameplay. The videos were made internally and were not meant to be seen by the public, however the videos were part of a large trove of data stolen from CD Projekt Red. In other leaked news, a PvP game set in the Tom Clancy universe seems to be in production at Ubisoft. The game will combine the Ghost Recon, The Division, and Splinter Cell franchises. And another hack—this time at Capcom—may have revealed the company used unlicensed images in some of their games, including Resident Evil 4 and Devil May Cry. The owner of those images is now suing Capcom.

By the Dragonlord's pantaloons! Axe of the Blood God has hit episode 300, and we couldn't be prouder to bring it to you! Kat and Nadia hosted a live show, but if you missed out, here's the neat 'n clean audio for you. You can also watch a re-run at Kat's Twitch channel. This week, Nadia and Kat have a long leisurely talk with the Blood God audience about RPG "firsts." Which game gets the credit as the progenitor of the genre we love so much? Did Dragon Quest III introduce classes, or did Final Fantasy III beat the dragon to the punch? And did you know modern RPGs owe a heck of a lot to Hydlide, that primitive "bump-and-stab" action RPG that has the worst overworld music in gaming history? Life is full of surprises, and we love reminding you all of that fact. Also in this episode: Monster Hunter Rise is monstrously good, SMT 3 featuring Dante from Devil May Cry is coming to Switch in May, and Square Enix cancels a Final Fantasy XI remake that we had no idea was in the works. Thanks for your support! Here's to 300 more episodes.
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. We talk a bit about combat and especially the way the baths area expands the level design, despite a few visual language missteps. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Up through the Soldier's Mess Hall Issues covered: the physics of ponytails, trying to make the palace feel like a real place, deathtraps, major locations, a thin narrative, establishing a relationship between the Prince and Farah, who he's telling the story to, a charming rogue, differences with other similar heroes, the upcoming elevator scene, a companion character that is genuinely helpful, the scripting of Farah to be helpful, Farah as an element of the combat space, having different voice lines for small changes in order, the availability of further linearization, making your small choices make an experiential impact, not being forced to learn by trial and error, not refreshing mechanics for players, the cadence of mechanics to reinforce learning, level design and design jokes, the bath house room, going between two spaces, recontextualizing a space, environmental storytelling misleading the player, symmetry getting in the way, macro goals getting in the way of the level design, the possibility that these were solutions that needed further refinement, being able to rewatch the vision as a band-aid, loving the ability to climb up through swinging and jumping, having the heavy sword as a key, not cuing that the sword is going to go through the wall well, the rewind time mechanic, using the sands as a resource, the cooldown mechanic, an additional health bar for combat and not caring about your health as much, painless experimentation without reloading, learning combat by rewinding to the moment of pain, crowd combat and finding gaps to escape through, finding ways to make traversal less punishing in more modern games, not needing the sands to be a resource, needing to refill the bubbles by killing enemies, the grittier sequels, our lack of cussing, narrative reactivity, our streaming lives. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Mark Garcia, Tomb Raider (series), Chris Hecker, The Three Stooges, Mass Effect, Half-Life, Uncharted, Tangled, Firefly, Nathan Fillion, Aladdin, Republic Commando, Captain America, Mark of Kri, Rise of the Kasai, God of War (2018), Resident Evil 4, Ico, Dark Souls, Devil May Cry, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, JS Bach, the Crab Canon, Assassin's Creed, Super Meat Boy, Arkham (series), Jonathan Blow, Braid, Remi Lacoste, Frost Raven, John Romero, mysterydip, Finding Dory, Maximum Super Dip Land, Bastion, Supergiant, Logan Cunningham, The Crow, Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, Baldur's Gate, Vampire: The Masquerade, Troika Entertainment, Icewind Dale, Hitman 3, Knives Out, Sherlock Holmes, Clue, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers. Wes and Charlie talk more Sea of Thieves, Grounded, Mario Galaxy, Devil May Cry 3, Risk of Rain 2 and Dota 2. It Takes Two, Monster Hunter Rise, Crash Bandicoot 4 were the big releases last week, all to pretty good reviews. The ID@Xbox Showcase was a surprise hit with many new and exciting titles coming soon and a lot of them will be day one releases on Game Pass! Mortal Online 2 held a server stress test this weekend and is interesting but needs a fair amount of polish. Biomutant is in pre-order and Dota 2 has a new tutorial along with a Netflix series you may want to check out. Gamestop is adding PC components and peripherals to their offerings and the latest rumor on the Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti looks like a mid-May release date. As always, thanks for listening!
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. We set the game in its time and studio, and then speak a fair amount about its holistic approach to design, its fluidity, and its contextualization of game mechanics. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Up to defeating Demon Dad Issues covered: 2003 with lots of sequels and licenses, when you launch a new IP, a strange sort of gap year, the prior incarnation of the game, emulating Tomb Raider and feeling heavy, buliding one you can learn with, burning Jordan Mechner, UbiSoft becoming a bigger player, the continuation of the series into the next generation, maintaining IP rights, rebooting with your own flavor of a thing, partnering with Nintendo, branching out with outside the box thinking, UbiSoft model of layering in content, supporting four engines internally, the Jade engine, the feeling of flying, feeling like a hero, perfecting and polishing a mechanic and getting the credit, melding multiple things together very well, using the linearity to contextually drive movement and camera, setting it in a place, the formula being copied for many years, "motion capture," rotoscoping in the original, moving from mark-up to mark-up fluidly due to blending, using transition points to drive the camera, shipping programmer art, orientalism, a holistic translation to 3D, contextualization of mechanics, basing the mechanics upon the narrative elements, avoiding cognitive load through holism, ludonarrative dissonance, writing getting out ahead of mechanics, switching discs. Nate, Sebastian, Jordan, and Ryan gather to discuss RESIDENT EVIL 4, Capcom's survival horror reinvention from 2005. We rag an awful lot on the corny storytelling of a game we love, discuss the many games influenced by RE4's perspective change, and marvel at the subtlety and effectiveness of the game's adaptive difficulty. Nate explains how much better he understands RE4 after having played Devil May Cry last year, Jordan has trouble remembering the names of presidential daughters, and Ryan asks the all important question: "What're ya buyin', stranger?"
We gorge on Nintendo news along with 17-Bit's Jake Kazdal, topping it off with lots (and lots) of thoughts on Bowser's Fury and very, very little FFXIV updates. And the long-awaited reveal of exactly what time Gabe secured his PS5 order. “Rest in peace, little chicken. It's been a bash.” Join Josh, James and Leah as we reunite with the Sparda family to remove a overgrown tree that’s threatening the local infrastructure in Red Grave City. In amongst all the combo chaining and demon juggling this series is famed for, we ask what each of the three playable characters brings to the proceedings and discuss just how far in advance we guess every “twist” in the narrative. So unsheathe rebellion and get ready to rock, as we cover Capcom’s 2019 title, Devil May Cry 5. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/podcast/cane_and_rinse_issue_448.mp3 Music featured in this issue: 1. Download for Mobile | Podcast Preview | Full Timestamps The Kar98 would kill in one shot no matter the location hit, even if it was someone's toe. It had pixel perfect accuracy. But being a bolt action rifle it had very slow rate of fire. On the other hand the Garand could fire quite fast, about as fast as the BR in Halo without the burst fire. Would one shot on hits to the head or chest, anywhere else took two. It wasn't super accurate like the Kar98. You can't reload until you run the gun dry, I think you know the iconic ping of a Garand running out of ammo.
