For the extra session of BONUS TRAX following the latest SURFACE NOISE podcast, we take a trip down mammary lane (pun intended) as we revisit a livestream on YouTube that was key to bringing many of our panelists together - The Rachel's Ghost daily livestream on YouTube.  Brought more into focus via a short documentary from director Greg Elmer, "The TV Show" presents the background into the hostess - Rachel Williams - and a world inside the Vinyl Community that ultimately became a hub for connectivity for many of the record collectors who flock to YouTube in search of news, information, and entertainment inside the collective.  Greg's film initially sets the stage for a poignant two days in that livestream's history with Election Day 2024 in the US, and the fallout the following day. The film also delves into many areas behind this "trans woman of color", her loving wife Sue, and the cast of "characters" affiliated with the show on those days.  Disclosure: We originally had planned to have Greg on to speak about the film, but scheduling issues presented themselves and he was unable to join. In his stead, the dais gave longer opinions on the film, that environment, and what story we felt was (or wasn't) told in those 33 minutes of film. He was generous enough to provide screening copies for us to review, which we greatly appreciate, and wish him and the project well going forward. Desde a infância os esportes sempre fizeram parte da sua vida: praticou natação, judô e futsal, e adorava andar de bicicleta. Ainda no ensino médio conquistou uma bolsa de estudos para dar aulas de futebol na escola onde estudava, o início de uma relação profunda e duradoura com a tradicional instituição de ensino Arnaldo. Em 2002, foi contratado como auxiliar administrativo no colégio. Formou-se em Direito em 2007, fez especialização em Direito Empresarial e Tributário, concluiu o mestrado em Direito Empresarial e, paralelamente à carreira jurídica, ingressou na docência universitária. Atuou como professor e coordenador em  diversas instituições de ensino superior, lecionou em cursos de pós-graduação e, em 2018, assumiu a direção do Centro Universitário Arnaldo Janssen. Desde 2024, ocupa o cargo de reitor, liderando três campi e mais de três mil alunos, com um olhar voltado para uma educação humanizada, moderna e acessível. Sua visão de mundo, que valoriza a integração entre tradição e inovação, também se traduz na atuação à frente do Instituto Arjon — organização dedicada à transformação social por meio do esporte, da educação e da sustentabilidade. Em 2024, graças à articulação com o triatleta e amigo Thiago Vinhal, o Instituto firmou uma parceria com a Unlimited Sports, responsável pelas provas do Ironman no Brasil. O Instituto Arjon passou a atuar como braço social do Ironman no país, promovendo inclusão, impacto positivo e desenvolvimento sustentável. No esporte, manteve-se ativo praticando tênis e, em 2013, retomou a paixão pela bicicleta. Participou de provas de mountain bike, como o Iron Biker, e em 2015 encarou seu primeiro duathlon. Um training camp em Mallorca, em 2018, despertou o interesse pelo triathlon. Estreou no Triathlon Internacional de Santos, em 2019, e completou seu primeiro Ironman 70.3 em 2022. Desde então, soma outras quatro participações na distância. Na corrida de rua, estreou em maratonas em 2023, em Buenos Aires, seguido por Roma em 2024 e Tóquio este ano. Conosco aqui ele, que acredita no poder transformador do esporte e da educação. The show of record on collecting records had a power-packed show lined up, but as fate would have it, The Beatles had other ideas (thanks Ringo). We kick off SURFACE NOISE talking about the sudden announcement of the Beatles + Mono boxset repress coming in a few weeks: who is picking it up, why repress this again (first since 2014), and what will these mean for those who already have the 2014 version and will likely see their value plummet. Then, as the Surface Noise Boys begins summer hours, our panel of vinylists discuss the greatest "what if's" in music history. If tragedy or bad decision-making didn't take place, how would parts of the popular cultural landscape potentially look different? It's the one they warned you about: SURFACE NOISE!  

Sometime in the 800s, an anonymous monk in the abbey of Fulda–now in modern Germany–copied out a Latin history in one of the great inventions of the age, the handwriting known as Carolingian miniscule, which is more or less they system that we use today to print the English alphabet. Thanks to that monk, today we have the first part of the Annals of P. Cornelius Tacitus, arguably the greatest surviving history of imperial Rome. But who was Tacitus? Why is he important? How could such an opinionated historian proclaim that he was writing without “anger and partiality”? Was he a champion of Roman liberty, or simply a grumpy aristocrat? With me to discuss Tacitus is Dr. Eric Adler, Professor and Chair of Classics at the University of Maryland. His scholarly interests include Roman historiography, Latin prose, the history of classical scholarship, and the history of the humanities. This is his second time on the podcast.
