The discussion also touched on growing concerns over California's regulatory climate, including pesticide restrictions, air quality rules, labor regulations, and electrification mandates. Isom warned that California farmers are increasingly unable to compete with producers in other states and countries operating under far fewer restrictions. “We're losing farmers and we're going to lose more if we don't get this turned around,” he said. Yo tengo una videoteca para mis clientes con +200 ejercicios diferentes. Pero no todos esos ejercicios son iguales. Hay algunos que son mucho mejores que otros y por tanto algunos son mucho peores que otros. Pero ¿Cómo escoger cuáles son los mejores ejercicios? ¿Cómo identificar realmente cuando un ejercicio es mejor o es peor? Pues eso es lo que vamos a ver hoy. Para empezar hay que aclarar que los ejercicios no son ni buenos ni malos porque todo depende de con qué lo compares. Es decir, no hay ejercicios buenos o malos solo hay ejercicios mejores, peores, o mucho mejores y mucho peores. Pero para determinar si un ejercicio es mejor o peor que otro tiene que haber algunos criterios de evaluación para poder comparar. Tipo de contracción El primero de estos criterios es el tipo de contracción: Isométrica o dinámica. Normalmente los ejercicios tienen una contracción dinámica porque hay movimiento, pero hay algunos que no. Por ejemplo, las típicas planchas abdominales es una contracción isométrica, no te mueves. O por ejemplo la típica rueda abdominal aunque parezca que hay movimiento, el movimiento que hay no es en el abdomen, con lo que sigue siendo una contracción isométrica. Por lo general, es mejor escoger un ejercicio con contracción dinámica que con contracción isométrica, porque si no fuera así, el mejor ejercicio para el pectoral sería juntar las manos muy fuerte y apretar. Pero si queremos trabajar el pecho no hacemos eso, entonces parece obvio que un ejercicio que tenga una contracción dinámica es superior a otro con una contracción isométrica. Rango de movimiento El siguiente criterio sería el rango de movimiento. El rango de movimiento es un poco arbitrario porque también depende de la movilidad que tenga la persona, pero de forma intrínseca, los ejercicios tienen su propio rango de movimiento. Por ejemplo, si tú quieres trabajar los glúteos, puedes hacer unas zancadas o puedes hacer una prensa de piernas. Pero si sabemos que el glúteo se encarga de extender la cadera y comparamos ambos ejercicios, vemos que la extensión de cadera en las zancadas es completa, mientras que en una prensa te vas a quedar a 45º porque la prensa está diseñada así. Así que si tuviera que comparar estos 2 ejercicios en base a este criterio, las zancadas serían mejores porque tienen un mayor rango de movimiento. Estabilidad El siguiente criterio sería la estabilidad. Estar estable cuando realizas un ejercicio te da la capacidad de hacer más fuerza contra la carga que estás usando. Y esto es muy sencillo de ver, imagina que ahora estás haciendo una sentadilla solamente con tu peso corporal y ahora haces una sentadilla montado sobre unos patines. Sobre unos patines es mucho más difícil porque estás menos estable. Esa es de hecho la razón por la que la gente usa cinturón cuando hace sentadillas o pesos muertos. El cinturón lumbar no es para proteger la espalda, el cinturón lumbar es para darte más estabilidad, porque te permite hacer fuerza contra algo. Es como si quieres empujar un coche, va a ser más fácil empujarlo si apoyas los pies o el cuerpo contra una pared porque te hace estar más estable. Pues lo mismo ocurre con los ejercicios, un ejercicio que te permita más estabilidad te va a permitir ejercer más fuerza. Y esto no significa que elementos como el fitball no tengan aplicación, significa que si puedo elegir, para ganar masa muscular voy a hacer un press con mancuernas sobre un banco plano antes que sobre un fitball, porque aunque sea el mismo ejercicio, el banco es más estable que el fitball. Curva de resistencia El cuarto criterio es la curva de resistencia. La curva o el perfil de resistencia simplemente nos dice que diferentes ejercicios nos exigen cosas diferentes y por otro lado nuestros músculos tienen también una capacidad diferente. Por lo general, los músculos cuando están muy estirados tienen poca capacidad de ejercer fuerza porque los filamentos de actina y miosina están muy separados, y conforme vas contrayendo el músculo se van uniendo y ya pueden hacer más fuerza, pero cuando el músculo está muy contraido estos filamentos están tan superpuestos que tampoco pueden hacer mucha fuerza. Por eso somos más fuertes cuando el músculo está en el rango medio de movimiento. Por ejemplo, el bíceps es más fuerte cuando está a 90º. Aunque aquí entran también otras cosas como el brazo de momento interno y todo eso, pero en general en el rango medio de movimiento es cuando más fuerte eres. Por lo que tiene sentido que el ejercicio que escojas te exija más en el rango medio que es cuando eres más fuerte y te exija menos cuando el músculo está muy estirado y muy contraido. Porque este ejercicio encajaría perfecto con lo que tú eres capaz de hacer. El ejemplo más claro son las elevaciones laterales. Si haces elevaciones laterales con mancuernas, cuando tienes los brazos en cruz que es cuando el músculo está más contraído es cuando más difícil es el ejercicio y cuando tienes los brazos a los lados, que es más o menos el rango medio, es cuando menos tensión hay. Pero si hago las elevaciones laterales en polea, esto cambia. Entonces la idea es buscar un ejercicio que se parezca a lo que mis músculos son capaces de hacer. Fatiga periférica Y el quinto criterio es la fatiga periférica: Esto significa que si yo hago un ejercicio es para agotar el músculo objetivo, pero si resulta que hay otros músculos que se fatigan antes, no voy a poder sacarle todo el partido a ese ejercicio. Esto por ejemplo es lo típico que ocurre con los ejercicios de espalda y el agarre. Si yo quiero trabajar la espalda pero las manos se me abren porque no tengo suficiente fuerza, entonces ese ejercicio no es muy bueno, o debería buscar la forma de que eso no pase. Por eso la gente usa straps o usa otro tipo de manerales donde el agarre no se fatiga tanto etc. Pero la idea de esto es ver si el ejercicio que estoy haciendo logra fatigarme primero el músculo que quiero trabajar o hay otra cosa que se fatiga antes. Por ejemplo, hace tiempo se puso muy de moda el press cubano, que es un press donde estás de pie y tienes las mancuernas abajo delante de los muslos, y haces como 3 movimientos, el primero es un remo vertical, es decir, subes las mancuernas tirando de los codos hacia arriba hasta que las mancuernas estén a la altura del pecho, luego haces una rotación externa donde levantas las mancuernas y ahora las mancuernas quedan por encima del codo y ya por último haces un press. Esto para las redes sociales está muy bien pero el problema que tiene es que de los músculos que se implican ahí, los rotadores son músculos mucho más débiles y se van a fatigar antes, entonces para trabajar el hombro no sería el mejor ejercicio porque siempre el eslabón más débil van a ser los rotadores. Esto no es necesariamente malo, a lo mejor quieres sobrecargar los rotadores, pero incluso ahí, tengas quizás otros ejercicios mejores para hacerlo atendiendo a todos estos puntos que hemos visto. Porque esto es lo siguiente que quiero explicar, estos 5 puntos pueden decirte por separado qué ejercicio es mejor y cuál es peor, pero lo interesante es no usar estos criterios por separado sino usarlos juntos. Por ejemplo, si yo quiero comparar 2 ejercicios vamos a compararlos en base a estos 5 criterios, no a uno solo. Y la forma simple que me gusta a mi hacerlo es ir criterio por criterio y darle puntos al ejercicio como si fuera un examen. Si cumple el criterio al 100% le doy 2 puntos, si lo cumple a medias le doy 1 y si no lo cumple le doy 0. Así, si ese ejercicio cumple perfectamente los 5 criterios tendrá 10 puntos, y así puedes comparar numéricamente y si tienes un ejercicio que es 10/10 contra otro que es 7/10, no significa que el de 7 sea malo, significa que el de 10 es mejor. Por ejemplo vamos a analizar las dominadas: ¿Las dominadas son un movimiento dinámico? Si, totalmente, vale 2 puntos ¿Tienen un rango completo de movimiento? Depende de cómo se hagan, pero vamos a darle también los 2 puntos porque es un movimiento con bastante rango de movimiento ¿Son estables? Vamos a darle 1 punto porque no es inestable pero tampoco es tan estable como unos jalones por ejemplo. Curva de resistencia, ¿Las dominadas me exigen más cuando más fuerte soy? No. Esto sería un 0. Y esto es muy habitual en ejercicios de espalda y fatiga periférica vamos a darle un 1 también porque igual las manos se te fatigan antes que la espalda, aunque quizás si usas straps puedas darle un 2 y corregir ese problema, pero vamos a ponerle un 1. La suma de todo es: 2 + 2 +1 +0 + 1. Es un ejercicio de 6. Ahora si comparas ese ejercicio con otro de espalda que tenga un 4 ya sabes que las dominadas son mejores. Y lo mismo con todos los ejercicios. Y ojo, esto no significa que los ejercicios con una nota más baja no puedan usarse nunca, porque otro elemento que he dejado fuera para seleccionar ejercicios es el equipamiento que tienes. Si vas a un gimnasio con todo el equipamiento del mundo podrás tener acceso a muchos más ejercicios, pero si entrenas en casa estarás más limitado y puede que para ti, un ejercicio que en un gimnasio no harías jamás porque no tiene sentido porque en el gimnasio tienes acceso a ejercicios de 8, si estás en casa y el mejor ejercicio que puedes hacer es un ejercicio de 4, pues ese es el mejor que puedes hacer tú. Por eso en mi videoteca hay +200 ejercicios no significa que los tengas que hacer todos o que todos sean buenísimos. No es así. Es solamente aportar opciones a las personas que no tengan mucho equipamiento, porque si todos tuviéramos equipamiento ilimitado, probablemente con 20 ejercicios no haría falta nada más. Pero si estás en casa y no tienes un banco y quieres hacer un press, puedes hacerlo en el suelo y restringir rango de movimiento pero tener más estabilidad, o hacerlo sobre un fitball y tener menos estabilidad pero más rango de movimiento. Ninguna de las 2 opciones es la mejor, pero es la mejor que puedes hacer tú, el resto no importa, Por eso esta videoteca es tan útil, no por los cientos de ejercicios que hay sino porque te da la opción de escoger qué es lo mejor a lo que tú puedes acceder. Guest Air Accident Updates We look at some air accident and incident updates in the press: NTSB Chair Slams FAA for Ignoring Repeated Warnings, Says Midair Collision Was Preventable In this C-Span video, NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy slams the FAA, saying that it let its guard down and ignored repeated warnings that ultimately led to the deadly midair collision near Washington Reagan National Airport on January 29, 2025, that killed 67 people. “We should be angry, because for years no one listened. This was preventable. This was 100 percent preventable,” Homendy says. Passengers on JetBlue Plane That Plummeted When Flight Computer “Glitched Out” Sue Airbus for Negligence The JetBlue A320 experienced a sudden “uncommanded loss of altitude,” initially attributed to a software glitch that Airbus believed could result from intense solar radiation. This led to an emergency worldwide recall in November 2025, with an estimated 6,000 A320-series aircraft affected. Three passengers on that flight are now suing Airbus for allowing an “unreasonably dangerous” glitch in the system to go unchecked. Those passengers question the solar flare explanation and claim that JetBlue was aware of a recurring issue with the Elevator and Aileron Computer (ELAC) system. No defect found in switch of jet grounded by Air India – regulator Pilots on an Air India B787-8 noticed that during engine start, the fuel control switch did not “remain positively latched in the run position when light vertical pressure was applied”. This happened twice. The third time, the switch operated normally. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said that when the switches were operated according to Boeing’s recommended procedure, they were found to be “satisfactory”, staying at run instead of moving to cut-off. The DGCA reported that, when incorrectly handled, the switch would “move easily from run to cut-off”. Three United Airlines Flight Attendants Seriously Injured After Air Traffic Control Failed To Alert Pilots Of Turbulence The NTSB has released its final report on the February 10, 2024, incident where a United Airlines 777-200 experienced a sudden drop, seriously injuring three flight attendants and throwing several passengers and an unsecured baby into the ceiling. The NTSB concluded that a contributing factor was air traffic controllers’ failure to alert the pilots of turbulence in the area. Pearson International Airport (CYYZ) on February 17, 2025, when the CRJ-900 regional jet attempted to land and struck the runway hard, causing the right wing and tail section to separate from the fuselage. The plane flipped upside down and slid to a stop. The wreckage was transported to a hangar while the right wing, landing gear, wing box structure, and related parts were taken to the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) Engineering Laboratory in Ottawa for testing. The metallurgical analysis of the wing and landing-gear fractures is now being examined. Recordings from the flight data recorder, cockpit voice recorder, quick access recorder (QAR), and the enhanced ground proximity warning system have been examined. Data from prior flights on the same aircraft were also compared to the accident flight for context. Evidence was collected from NAV CANADA's Toronto surface movement guidance system and the airport's closed-circuit television footage. A full meteorological review, including wind data and soundings, has also been finalized to understand weather conditions at the time. Simulator sessions have been run. Duffy Doubles Down on Purging DEI From Our Skies, Calls on Airlines to Affirm Pilot Hiring is Merit-Based The FAA is issuing a new mandatory “Operations Specification” (OpSpec) requiring all commercial airlines to commit to merit-based hiring for pilots formally. The mandate (New Mandatory OpSpec A134, Merit-Based Pilot Hiring, for Certificate Holders Conducting Operations Under 14 CFR Part 121 [PDF]) is effective February 13, 2026. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said, “When families board their aircraft, they should fly with confidence knowing the pilot behind the controls is the best of the best. The American people don't care what their pilot looks like or their gender—they just care that they are most qualified man or woman for the job. Safety drives everything we do, and this commonsense measure will increase transparency between passengers and airlines.” ALPA Statement on Pilot Training and Qualification Standards Capt. Jason Ambrosi, president of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), issued a statement that included: “All ALPA pilots are trained and evaluated to the same uncompromising standard regardless of race, gender, or background. A pilot’s identity has no bearing on their ability to safely operate an aircraft. What matters is training, experience, and qualification — and on that front, there are no shortcuts and no compromises. “At ALPA, our work to advance aviation safety never stops, and as always, ALPA airline pilots remain ready to safely transport passengers and cargo to their destinations. Safety is, and always will be, our number one priority.” Portland International Jetport logs busiest year in its history The Portland International Jetport had a record year in 2025, with more than 2.59 million passengers traveling through the airport. The previous record was 2.44 million in 2024. The Jetport says it became the first airport in New England to surpass its pre-pandemic passenger levels in 2023. Southwest Airlines Turns a Corner as Activist Investor Elliott Walks Away Elliott Management, an activist investor, began to acquire shares of Southwest stock in mid-2024. It bought enough shares to gain board representation and dictate the Airline's strategic and financial changes. As a result, we saw paid assigned seating, baggage fees, expiring travel credits, and adjustments to its Rapid Rewards program. Southwest also looked at asset sales and balance sheet strategies to fund share buybacks. But in late 2025, Elliott began reducing its stake, and by early February 2026, its ownership dropped to about 9 percent. Two Elliott representatives have resigned from the board at Southwest. Southwest Airlines Now Faces a Flight Attendant Backlash As Hand Luggage Woes Grow Southwest moved a dedicated overhead bin for crew members to the back of the plane, and flight attendants are not happy. Passengers sitting at the front of the plane who have paid more or have elite status find that bin space is an issue. Aviation News Allied Pilots Association Delivers Scathing Ultimatum to American Management In a letter to the American Airlines Group Board of Directors, the Allied Pilots Association (APA) Board of Directors says, “Our airline is on an underperforming path and has failed to define an identity or a strategy to correct course” and “…it is the result of persistent patterns of operational, cultural, and strategic shortcomings.” “For more than a year, APA has voiced concerns regarding management's ability to turn the corner. Management has been given repeated opportunities to articulate a credible strategy and demonstrate measurable improvement. Those opportunities have passed without meaningful change. Despite repeated assurances, the operation continues to struggle under predictable stressors, exposing systemic weaknesses in preparation, execution, and decision making. These consequences are shouldered by our customers and employees every day. “ “These failures have negatively impacted the financial performance of our company and frustrated all stakeholders, to include shareholders, for far too long.” “American is no longer best in class financially, operationally, or in customer service. In an internal memo addressed to Isom, APFA Chicago O'Hare base president Justin Patterson says, “I would like to say, sleeping on floors is NOT normal. Shame on you for trying to normalize this inhumane treatment. Doing the same thing on repeat and expecting different results [is] the definition of insanity.” Patterson asks, “Do you intend on running this airline with piss poor planning and posting minuscule profits again in 2026?” And “This company failed more than just the Flight Attendants… they failed everyone who works here. American Airlines failed our shareholders. They were derelict in their duties to our shareholders.” APFA is the official crew union that represents more than 28,000 AA flight attendants. Table depth is half what you'd normally expect from a tray table. A standard laptop will overhang the smaller tables, and the standard AA long-haul meal tray will as well. The table does not fold out or extend. Pressure mounts on American Airlines CEO as carrier lags rivals In 2025, Delta Air Lines posted $5 billion in net income with a 7.9% profit margin. United Airlines posted $3.3 billion in net income with a 5.7% margin. American Airlines made $111 million last year with a 0.2% margin. AOPA's Hiring a Crisis Communications Firm AOPA's board has reportedly hired a crisis‑management firm on a $250,000 retainer to handle intense backlash over the abrupt departure of CEO Darren Pleasance on February 4, 2026. Off-Duty FAA Inspector Claims He Got Lifetime Ban from United After He Pointed Out Alleged Safety Concerns Paul Asmus said that after a May 2022 flight where he pointed out his safety concerns, United removed him from the flight and gave him a lifetime travel ban. Asmus is suing United for $12.75 million in damages. The civil suit claims loss of wages, emotional distress, and punitive damages. Asmus, an FAA Inspector but off-duty, claims that he noticed a “torn seat-back pocket at his assigned seat,” which “impaired the ability to secure and access the emergency briefing card” and a passenger standing in the aisle while the aircraft pushed back from the gate. Asmus believed that he had an obligation to report the violations he observed and took photographs for an FAA report. Audit Initiated of Air Traffic Controller Training at the FAA Academy The U.S. Department of Transportation, Office of Inspector General announced the initiation of an audit. The Memorandum, Audit Announcement | Air Traffic Controller Training at the FAA Academy [PDF] (Project ID 26A3002A000), dated February 5, 2025, states that: “…the Academy is facing considerable challenges with training, including a shortage of qualified instructors, training capacity limitations, an outdated curriculum, and high training failure rates. Given the importance of increasing the number of certified controllers to safely manage the NAS, we are initiating this audit. The audit objectives will be to assess (1) FAA's efforts to address the Academy instructor shortages, training limitations, and trainee failure rates and (2) the Academy's progress with updating the air traffic controller training program curriculum.” The OIG plans to begin the audit “in the coming weeks.” The Office of Inspector General (OIG) works within the Department of Transportation (DOT) to promote the efficiency and effectiveness of DOT programs and operations and to detect and prevent waste, fraud, and abuse. Here's what I wrote Oct. 26, 1993: “Our Centary [Cemetary] Field Trip “We left at 9:24 [a.m.] to private little spot with 3 gravesites. To get here go down Highway 60 to the third road on the left. Go down till you see an open field on the left is a hill climb up it until you have almost reaches the top. Go into the woods and when you see 3 stones. Mr. Watterson told us about the importantce [importance] of written history. “Then we put holes in the ground. Then we posts in the ground. Then Mr. Watterson talked about folklore. Then we put some hooks in the posts. After that we put a long, long chain that we put around the posts. Then we asked questions. We went back down the hill. Then we went back to the bus. We retraced our steps there. As we went home, Mr. Watterson told us about a guy who killed his wife and 2 brothers a hair pin. I did not believe it. We got back to school at 10:40 a.m. This field trip was very, very fun and interesting.” I asked Justin if he knew any more about that last bit. He said: “I should have known the story you were referring to. That grave is an Isom woman and I think she was related to the perpetrator in question. When Van Sanders used to tell those stories to Dad when he was alive (his family was an original plot owner there in that area so he knew the history) he always referred to the hill as "Ant'ony Hill." I found census records for I believe an Anthony Isom. The story was that his wife fell disabled (invalid) and he got tired of taking care of her so he took and axe and chopped her up. Finding records of that is pretty much impossible but that's what you're referring to I think. “There were a bunch of mixed-race folks who settled right there in that area and I always kind of guessed that it was because the old Indian boundary line was right there going through that area way back in the day. Isom was a very common name among them and they mostly came from Virginia where other such settlements existed. There were notable other settlements of free people of color around the state back in the 19th century. “It's an interesting wormhole to go down. What defined "black" on the census was kind of crazy. I found some people on the 1850 census who were market as black but then ten years later they were white.” Now, let's travel 32 years in the past. linktr.ee/therobburgessshow

In today's episode of the AgNet News Hour, we bring you a powerful and in-depth conversation with Roger Isom, President and CEO of both the Western Agricultural Processors Association and the California Cotton Ginners and Growers Association. But Isom is hopeful the current administration may finally bring clarity and compromise. “We've had the same people work with us for 20 or 30 years,” he says, “and they're part of our communities. It's time to take care of them.” Freight is another huge concern. The state's push toward electric and hydrogen trucks might be well-intentioned, but Isom points out the reality: they're not viable for ag transport today. From high costs to impractical range limitations, these changes threaten small trucking operations that California ag relies on. “If I lose 9,000 pounds of payload to a battery, that's an extra trip I have to pay for,” he warns. And of course, no conversation about California ag is complete without water. Isom lays out how misguided environmental regulations have crippled the state's most productive farmland—transforming once-thriving communities into shadows of their former selves. Despite sacrifices made to protect species like Delta smelt, populations have declined anyway. “We've taken the water,” Isom says, “but we haven't fixed the problem.” Isom also calls out the dangerous disconnect between legislators and the land. Many of the people making critical decisions about agriculture have never been on a farm, and that ignorance leads to damaging policies. “They thought we kept our workers locked up at night,” Isom recalls, emphasizing the need to educate lawmakers directly. Money Learnings: Michael Isom started working at a local motorcycle dealership when he was in 7th grade, earning $2.25 an hour. He used the money he earned to pay for things he wanted like clothes for school, motorcycle parts, and dating expenses. In his senior year of high school, he paid his mom $100 per month in rent to help out the family. Michael attributes learning the value of money from his ability to earn it himself and spend it as he wished from a young age. He emphasizes that there is no substitute for allowing kids to earn and spend money themselves to truly understand its value. This was a key financial lesson he learned growing up and something he practiced with his own children as well.
