fWotD Episode 2949: Namco Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 1 June 2025, is Namco.Namco Limited was a Japanese multinational video game and entertainment company founded in 1955 which operated video arcades and amusement parks globally, produced video games, films, toys, and arcade cabinets. They were one of the most influential figures in the worldwide coin-op and arcade game industry; Namco produced several multi-million-selling game franchises, such as Pac-Man, Galaxian, Tekken, Tales, Ridge Racer, and Ace Combat. In 2006, Namco merged with Bandai to form what is now named Bandai Namco Holdings; the standalone Namco brand continues to be used for video arcade and other entertainment products by the group's Bandai Namco Amusements division. The Namco name comes from Nakamura Manufacturing Company, derived from its founder Masaya Nakamura. In the 1960s, it manufactured electro-mechanical arcade games such as the 1965 hit Periscope. It entered the video game industry after acquiring the struggling Japanese division of Atari in 1974, distributing games such as Breakout in Japan. The company renamed itself Namco in 1977 and published Gee Bee, its first original video game, a year later. Among Namco's first major hits was the fixed shooter Galaxian in 1979. It was followed by Pac-Man in 1980. Namco prospered during the golden age of arcade video games in the early 1980s, releasing popular titles such as Galaga, Xevious, and Pole Position.Namco entered the home market in 1984 with conversions of its arcade games for the MSX and the Nintendo Family Computer, later expanding to competing platforms, such as the Sega Genesis, TurboGrafx-16, and PlayStation. Namco continued to produce hit games in the 1990s, including Ridge Racer, Tekken, and Taiko no Tatsujin, but later endured financial difficulties due to the struggling Japanese economy and diminishing arcade market. This led to the 2005 announcement of a merge with toy maker Bandai, which was completed in 2006 as Namco Bandai Holdings; Namco's former video games division was merged into a subsidiary of the holdings company, Namco Bandai Games, now called Bandai Namco Entertainment. Namco is remembered in retrospect for its unique corporate model, its importance to the industry, and its advancements in technology. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:51 UTC on Sunday, 1 June 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Namco on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Emma.
[Episode 37] This month barSILENCE is taking off into the high-tech futuristic world of Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere! Released in Japan in 1999 and internationally in 2000, this ambitious entry in Namco's legendary flight-combat series pushed the PlayStation to its limits and had an awesome cyberpunk-infused narrative, stunning visuals, and one of the most experimental soundtracks in the series. Composed by a powerhouse team including Tetsukazu Nakanishi, Hiroshi Okubo, Go Shiina, Koji Nakagawa, and Kanako Kakino, the music of Ace Combat 3 is a brilliant fusion of techno and electronica, mixed with an atmospheric ambiance that perfectly complements the game's futuristic setting. To celebrate the 25th anniversary, Namco released a fully remastered soundtrack in 2024, and we'll be experiencing it in a techno futuristic playlist-style format. Get ready to hack the Electrosphere and take to the skies for some serious Air Combat! Bingo! We're playing two not very classics of their respective genres today as we go back to the back half of the 90s to play an early action game and a relatively early 3D platformer. We're kind of split on which game we prefer along lines I expect you'd predict, but we both had a pretty good time with both games anyway! Also, before that, Jackson gives the MOTHER of all segment 1 updates. At 16:15 or so until 1:15:30 Jackson's Audacity file broke and we had to use the backup. Em's a little quiet during this section but it's mostly okay. I did my best with the edit. Sorry about that! Thank you so much as always for listening, please rate and review the podcast, and tell all your friends on whatever social media you call home that they should check us out. John Ray joined Atari Inc in 1977 as a hardware engineer, learning the ropes with 1978's Fire-Truck, arguably the first truly co-op arcade game and a distinctive arcade presence due in no small part to his analogue circuitry audio. Ray was also involved with the Atari-licensed versions of Namco's Dig Dug and Xevious, the awesome arcade version of Tetris and - into the 1990s - the hugely popular San Francisco Rush racing series of the 90s.

We're gathered here today to mourn & celebrate the life of a video game console, Nintendo's last handheld-only device, the small but mighty Nintendo 3DS.As of March 27th, 2023, the Nintendo eShop for the 3DS and Wii U will be officially shut down, meaning 866 Wii U games and 1547 3DS games will no longer be available to purchase. We've already dedicated an episode in the past to the Nintendo Wii U, so today we're taking a look back at our memories of the 3DS: our favorite games to grace the device, StreetPass & other quirky apps, its hit-&-miss use of its signature stereoscopic 3D gimmick, and some last-minute purchases we've recently downloaded & played in the eShop's twilight hours. Plus we wax poetic a bit about the death of digital media, the importance of video game preservation, and the ethics of p*racy & emulation (not that we know what tf we're talking about! we're just two gaymers with a podcast and opinions!) If you're listening to this before 3/27/23, we hope this episode provides a couple of last-minute game recommendations to download! Otherwise... we don't know what to tell ya, but thanks for listening anyways! Good luck finding a physical copy of some of these games on eBay I guess? RIP to the 3DS. You had a good at it, thanks for your input

A pair of games based on popular media works? Well, almost. Action Fighter clearly draws its inspiration from 1970s James Bond and his transforming Lotus Esprit, but unlike James Bond 007 for Multivision, it doesn't wear the actual Bond license. It's a much better game, though. Drawing heavy inspiration from the likes of Spy Hunter and (gulp) Xevious, it turns out to be an unexpected highlight of the Master System's launch period. On the other hand, Black Belt did sport a media license... in Japan. Here in the U.S., however, Sega scrubbed all of those details clean. And I do mean "scrubbed"—rather than simply redrawing the main character's sprites, the developers gave every single component of this game a visual overhaul. It's really quite an impressive effort—and yet, the underlying work still shines through. And, because it plays as a convincing Kung Fu clone, you can understand why they went to the trouble rather than just skipping over localization and publishing some other game instead. Production notes: Why watch when you can read? Check out the massive hardcover print editions of NES Works, Super NES Works, and Virtual Boy works, available now at Limited Run Games (https://limitedrungames.com/collections/books)! This week is a bit of an ouroboros: While the primary feature here is Capcom's Legendary Wings, this episode also touches on the NES release of Xevious, the game that very clearly inspired Legendary Wings (not to mention about a thousand other Japanese arcade games of the era). Xevious is by far the purer of the two, not to mention the fairer, but there is something to be said for that late '80s Capcom house NES style... Production note: SG-1000 footage in this episode was captured from a combination of Sega SG-1000 II with (with Card Catcher; RGB amp mod by @iFixRetro ) and @Analogue Mega Sg with card adapter module and DAC. Well, I survived. I made it all the way through the Othello Multivision's library. If you thought the first four games were unimpressive, that's only because you had no idea what Tsukuda Original had up its sleeve for 1984: Yet another mahjong game, a glacial Xevious clone, and Video Works' very first (of many...) horse race-betting sim. But at least there's a somewhat inventive golf title and a solid conversion of a beloved (albeit crazy difficult) James Bond game. This version fixes a titling error from the previous upload. This episode's titles: San Nin Mahjong Challenge Derby Okamoto Ayako no Match Play Golf Space Armor James Bond 007 Special thanks to Omar Cornut for his assistance with this episode!
Two Nintendo games and two Namco (Namcot??) titles this week to bring Famicom's 1984 lineup streaking toward its finale. I'm not sure any of these games will set anyone's heart on fire here in 2021, due to (1) the kinda mundane nature of Nintendo's releases and (2) overexposure to Namco's games. But pretend you are a small child in 1984! In that context, these games are pretty great. Except Mahjong. No child wants that.

While this isn't the end of our side excursions into the Atari 7800 chronology, it's the last for the time being. These four releases bring the console's lineup in line with the current state of NES Works (January 1988), and it would be a while before more games followed. Thankfully for the Atari faithful, the console's lineup with fatten up significantly in 1988 and ’89, but there's no getting around the fact that its slow start really hurt the system. Also of note this episode: The final classic Namco conversion for 7800, and the first batch of (highly faithful) classic computer game adaptations. Video Works is funded via Patreon (http://www.patreon.com/gamespite) — support the show and get access to every episode up to two weeks in advance of its YouTube debut! And be sure to check out the Retronauts podcast (http://www.retronauts.com), where I (and many others!) tackle a much wider array of classic gaming topics each week.
Hi there! This week's game is the unreleased prototype for Xevious, by Atari. I think Tod Frye did a great job on this, it's a shame that it didn't come out at the time. Coming up next on the show is the prototype game Kyphus by Apollo. After I put it on the list however, I discovered that it's not really a playable game. But it does have a part number assigned to it, and you know the law around these parts. If you want to take a look at it and send me some feedback about it, please send it to 2600gamebygame@comcast.net by end of the day October 18th. Thank you so much for listening, I hope that you are all well and safe. Hi there, thanks once again for your patience (I thought I was done saying that, apparently I have more work to do). This week I am covering Lock 'n' Chase by M Network, which is a Pac-Man wannabe that doesn't quite get there for me. The prototype for Xevious by Atari is coming up next, and I'm going to try to stay on schedule despite this week's show being late. If you have any feedback for Xevious, please send it to me at 2600gamebygame@gmail.com by 6 PM EST on October 6th. You can get a copy of the Xevious rom here.
Highly regarded as the father of the shoot'em up genre, Xevious blessed the arcade scene in 1983. This game set many standards for arcade games and became a great influence to future creators. A fantastic game for those interested in the genre of SHMUP's, due to it's easier game play, unlike some of the monsters that would later release. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thearcadefiles/message

Alan Murphy, Atari Animator Alan Murphy was Senior Animator at Atari, where we worked from 1980 through 1987. Alan created the graphics for the Atari 8-bit versions of Defender, Xevious, Galaxian, Countermeasure, Pac Man for the Atari 5200, Demons to Diamonds for the 2600, and many other games. He also worked with engineers at Atari Research on research projects and prototyping, and designed specs for game art and animation systems. This interview took place June 15, 2015. Teaser quotes: “So I did these animations of Mr. and Mrs. Pac Man going across the screen and then they came back the other way and there were little babies. Namco came along and said 'uh-uh...that's a little too suggestive.'” “As far as I know, I think that was the first easter egg by an artist.” Links: Countermeasure Easter Egg Animated Gauntlet Commercial
Well hi! I learned a very important lesson this week. I finished the research for the Xonox games Chuck Norris Superkicks and Artillery Duel on Sunday, way before I usually do. So of course, I have problem after problem while recording and editing, so that means procrastination is always worth it! Also, ambigram. Next time I'l be discussing Rocky and Bullwinkle (not released), Kool Aid Man, and Super Challenge Football, all by M Network. For the rest of this year, I'll be covering the following games: Swordquest Waterworld and Swordquest Airworld (vapourware) by Atari; River Raid by Activision; Bugs and Journey Escape by Data Age; China Syndrome and Challenge of Nexar by Spectravision; E.T. by Atari; Turmoil and Fantastic Voyage by 20th Century Fox; Name This Game and Towering Inferno by US Games; Music Machine by Sparrow and Glib by Selchow and Wrighter; and Ms. Pac-Man and Centipede by Atari.
