The Big Truth Podcast

The Launch Pad is a new subseries of the Big Truth Podcast where guests partake in various psychedelics and proceed to launch --- then we hit record and see what happens! This first edition was recorded in Truth's hotel room after the Hooligan Holiday party in Albany where Murphy's Law performed.  After a full day of drinking – Truth, Jimmy G (Murphy's Law), and The Viking (Strongman competitor and jiu jitsu competitor) headed back to the room, may or may not have taken a copious amount of mushrooms and DMT, and then started recording this podcast. Jimmy gets into the old New York punk and hardcore scenes – including beef between cities, etc.  He also takes us through a lot of historical Murphy's Law tour stories – including riots, and the infamous Beastie Boys “License to Ill” tour -- also mentioned in these tour stories were Public Enemy, Run DMC, Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), The Ramones, Blitz, Deicide, Todd Youth, the Misfits, Stigma, etc.   We also get into discussions about motorcycles, racing his flathead at The Race of Gentlemen, and other shenanigans. Stay tuned for more editions of the The Launch Pad series with other guests coming soon! Jon Gabrus (Action Boys, High and Mighty) joins Matt to discuss the Beastie Boys' first album License To Ill! A Statement from Matt Apodaca: "Hello Everyone. Way back in November 2019 I announced I’d be releasing the follow up to my Weezer podcast, a podcast series diving into the discography of the Beastie Boys titled “So Whatcha Whatcha Whatcha Talkin About the Beastie Boys”. I recorded the first episode with Gabrus and was excited to continue! Then I got busier, then the pandemic happened. I never got around to recording the rest of the episodes but it felt nuts to hold the episode any longer. For me doing my own pods is a lot of fun and infinitely easier to do with studio capabilities, since I’m recording, hosting and editing all myself. Unfortunately right now with the work I have to do on the other shows I work on and not being the most experienced editor, I’m as of now unable to work on my own projects but hopefully with learning some new skills I’ll be able to return to it at some point. I hope you enjoy Gabrus and I talking about the Beastie Boys’ License to Ill! Cheers! Matt" --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wwthtaweezerpod/support

Bill and Brian welcome bloggers Ed and Alice Magdziak from youdontknowjersey.com to help us talk about what makes Beastie Boys' License to Ill great. Formed by 3 teenage New Yorkers who held the burgeoning rap scene of the early 80s in the same regard as the hardcore punk they grew up on, the band went on to release a huge cross over hit that was only a hint at the critically acclaimed and influential series of albums they would produce. Alice and Ed discuss their very different experiences discovering the band in middle-of-nowhere Ohio and as a college sophomore who had a chance meeting, respectively. Brian, Bill, Ed, and Alice discuss the Beastie Boys' party dude image, the mysoginistic and sexist content on the album, the influence of happenstance in meeting producer Rick Rubin and label head Russell Simmons, how broad the genre divide is in rap music, the importance of sequencing especially when navigating mediocre tracks, and of course a track by track review!
