Life of the Record
The Making of CRAZY RHYTHMS by The Feelies - featuring Glenn Mercer and Bill Million

Life of the Record

For the 45th anniversary of The Feelies' classic debut album, Crazy Rhythms, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After the band formed as The Outkids in Haledon, New Jersey in 1976, Glenn Mercer, Bill Million and Dave Weckerman started playing with brothers Keith Clayton and Vinnie DeNunzio. They changed their name to The Feelies as they started playing gigs around New York City. At an audition night at CBGBs, they connected with sound engineer Mark Abel, who introduced them to manager Terry Ork. They began to get booked regularly and receive some press just as DeNunzio decided to leave the band. After placing an ad for a new drummer, they brought in Anton Fier, who had just relocated to New York from Clevenland. Weckerman also left around this time so the band lineup was solidified as a four piece. Rough Trade offered to release their debut single, which came out in 1979. For their debut album, they wanted to find a label that would allow them to produce. After signing with Stiff Records, they began recording at Vanguard Studios with Mark Abel co-producing. Crazy Rhythms was eventually released in 1980. In this episode, Glenn Mercer and Bill Million recall connecting as teenagers in suburban New Jersey over a shared love of the Stooges. Mercer describes arranging their songs around the drums and percussion parts, while bringing a nervous energy and quirkiness to his vocals and lyrics. Million talks about how their early experiences with recording helped them realize the necessity of producing themselves and how they waited for the right record deal that would give them a proper recording budget. They describe their joy of discovery in the studio and their process for coming up with spontaneous parts as they were eager to treat the studio as an instrument. From finding the right clean guitar sound to standing out in the New York punk scene to embracing the suburbs to the 1950s-inspired look of the band to taking inspiration from contemporaries like Jonathan Richman, Brian Eno, Mo Tucker, and Steve Reich to percussion played with random objects to making music on their own terms for nearly 50 years, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

First issues are hard. Last issues are hard. Second-to-last issues are hard. Maybe...all issues are hard? Book Club is back in session with creators Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm, discussing Spectrum #5, the penultimate issue in their brilliant Mad Cave Studios series. With the end just around the corner (the final issue arrives in shops on May 21st, as does our final Book Club episode with Quinn and Chisholm, so mark your calendars), Spectrum #5 must elevate and explode a bunch of grandiose ideas about art that the comic has so far been teasing or suggesting. Spectrum #5 is a BIG comic following two central characters while traversing multiple timelines and encountering alternate-dimension stand-ins for iconic cultural figures and places from our world. Quinn and Chisholm might not say it, but we will: PBGBs is CBGBs, and Gloria Bell is Patti Smith. Half the pleasure of reading Spectrum is tracking their sci-fi alternatives of real-world legends, which recalls similar joys had when devouring Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. However, as Spectrum #5 ramps toward its fiery conclusion next month, the fervor with which Quinn and Chisholm explore vital artistry is the ultimate appeal. Why do humans sing? Why do they paint? Why do they tell stories to one another? During a moment when artistic expression is recklessly dismissed or downright eradicated, Spectrum #5 shows its readers how they're constantly engaged with creative expression and why only the most vile and pathetic people are detached from it. Last month's Spectrum Book Club was extremely process-heavy in its conversation. Now, for the penultimate issue, it's time to dig into the thematic weeds, have a serious chat about human connection, and worry not about labels of pretension. We're all friends here. Spectrum 1 - 5 are currently available from Mad Cave Studios, and the final issue will arrive in shops on April 21st. One-two-three-four! The Ramones, a four-man rock band from Forest Hills, Queens, played the Bowery music club CBGB for the very first time on August 16, 1974.Not only would Joey, Johnny, Tommy and Dee Dee reinvigorate downtown New York nightlife here -- creating a unique and energetic form of punk -- but they would join with a small group of musicians at CBGB to revolutionize American music in the 1970s.In this episode we're celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Ramones' first performances in downtown Manhattan. But this also a tribute to New York rock music of the 1970s and to the most famous rock-music club in America.CBGB & OMFUG officially stands for "Country, Bluegrass, Blues and Other Music For Uplifting Gormandizers," and Hilly Kristal's legendary hole-in-the-wall music venue on the Bowery would be best defined by that "other music" -- namely punk, new wave and later hardcore.Over the course of 70 performances, the Ramones would perfect their sound and appearance on the ragged little stage here at CBGB, building upon musical influences like the local glam rock scene (The New York Dolls, Jayne County) and their own nostalgic callbacks to the Beatles. The mid-1970s CBGBs scene would produce other artists who would go on to mainstream, international fame -- Patti Smith, Television, the Talking Heads and Blondie. Not only would these artists become associated with the Bowery, but most of them would live on the surrounding streets. On this special episode, Greg is joined by an incredible roster of guests including Ramones record producer and engineer Ed Stasium; longtime CBGBs fixture BG Hacker; tour guide and Ramones fan Ann McDermott and music historian Jesse Rifkin, author of This Must Be The Place: Music, Community and Vanished Spaces in New York City.Visit the website for more information and imagesSee the Bowery Boys live at Joe's Pub this October! After listening to this show, check out the Bowery Boys podcasts on the history of the East Village:#416 Creating the East Village#417 Walking the East Village

Check Alan out here: www.alanwalkermusic.net Born and raised in New York City, Alan Walker has been playing in clubs there since the mid-80s, with his first show at CBGBs and his first band Club Iguana. He is the former lead singer and piano & organ player of rootsy/melodic pop band, The Brilliant Mistakes, who were aptly named after a song by one of their songwriting mentors, Elvis Costello. The Brilliant Mistakes had a great run starting in 1993, releasing three albums (two with Schleifer producing) before stopping in 2012. The band frequented the downtown NYC club scene and, at one time, was a WFUV favorite, appearing live there as well as with Jerry Treacy on his 'Crash on The Levee' radio show. They were played by David Dye on WXPN's World Cafe as well as on Vin Scelsa's Idiot's Delight and performed at SXSW for a few years. Alongside his musical career, Walker works full time in book publishing (VP of Higher Education at Penguin Random House). He spoke more about it all in a 2019 podcast interview with Center Stage with Pamela Kuhn, who says he, "has put the polish on life as a popular musician while having an extended and successful livelihood in publishing... Every great composer has their own love of the marriage of music and word. And I can't help but feel that Alan Walker has kept his creativity fresh with his day 'gig' at Penguin Publishing that keeps honing his skills."Although the city definitely had an effect on who Alan Walker is, the songs he writes, and certainly the musicians he has become most closely involved with, he says, "I get just as much inspiration from being in the country, outdoors hiking with my dogs or on a road bike. I'm half city, half country boy, having grown up in NYC and the hills of Western MA. I'd like to think there is both humor and a subtle edge to my lyrics, which may be the city side of me, and also melancholy in my melodies, which is the country part, but then again, maybe it's not so simple, and it's all mixed up in the soup that my songs come out of." A Little Too Late is a follow-up to Walker's 2019 debut Something Up My Sleeve and will be released on June 28 on Aunt Mimi's Records.

Peter Baylis is from the Metropolitan suburb of Bexley. He left school and pursued his career in photography by starting in a processing lab. He learned his craft by taking as many photographs as possible and submitting them to photo editors and hope that they would use the image for a story.During his career Peter has photographed the great and the good. His first interaction with a celebrity was as an assistant's assistant was with Elton John. His most saleable image is of Eric Clapton and Pattie Boyd.Peter worked with the Who both as a photographer and security, David Carradine was the most awkward subject and Keith Moon one of the best!Peter took images of the then Prince Charles at Belmarsh Prison and the late Queen Mother who posed for him!It was a regular visitor called Guy Robin (French Music Journalist) Who introduced him to an unknown band formed by Gordon Sumner, Stewart Copeland, and Henry Padovani – The Police were photographed, Padovani replaced by Andy Summers and the rest as they say is history. Peter toured with the band and went to the iconic CBGBs in New York. Mel Brooks Pulled a “Goochie” at Peter in protest at the noise made by the camera, this image was captured and is iconic.Making requests of appropriate authorities Peter was able to spend time with the Paras, On a submarine and flew as a passenger on an F1-11! Having a brass neck was the greatest asset that Peter has!Pete Townsend and David Essex posed for Peter at the Cannes Film Festival. He snapped an image of David Cassidy as he left a theatre in Leicester Square. He was invited by the producer of Shout at The Devil to photograph Lee Marvin and he went on to meet Roger Moore and Barbra ParkinPeters career was placed in jeopardy when he was violently assaulted by 3 Sunderland fans. we took a few weeks off, we're sorry it won't happen again. it wasn't that we got too busy to edit the episodes for a while it was that uhhhh that was the end of season one of the pod? yeah definitely that one.anyways. we talk about a bunch of stuff like the possibility of the old vice office getting turned into an airport CBGBs, asap rocky's veganism, and slava's theory of “the canadian internet.” we also celebrate the return of the REAL blink 182 by drew talking about how he recently saw a ufo, slava talking about his traumatic childhood memory of accidentally playing an extremely profane blink song in front of his mom, and trey making the bold claim that eminem supplanted blink 182's place in culture. featuring a cameo by friend of the pod derek mead, who called trey while we were recording so we put him on speaker and turned it into content.follow nersey on twitterfollow trey on twitterfollow slava on twitterfollow drew on twitterall music by craig s. jenkins This is a public episode. Arguably the band to start the CBGBs scene paving the way for the Ramones, Talking Heads, Patti Smith, Blondie and more, was a band called Television. One of the most innovative bands of the early New York "punk" scene, Television were there and then they weren't and then like 15 years later, they were again. Their influence casts a long shadow, and the music continues to influence artists today. Press play to find out why Television didn't become their own sort of Grateful Dead. Eugene Robinson was at many iconic hardcore shows in the 80s--as a musician (He played in Whipping Boy), as a journalist, and as a fan. The scene was not always a pretty place. He's been in enough fights that he wrote a book about it. Fight: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Ass-Kicking but Were Afraid You'd Get Your Ass Kicked For Asking.  But Eugene's latest book details his hardcore years and it's another mouthful. A Walk Across Dirty Water and Straight Into Murderer's Row: A Memoir. So we brought him on to tell his punk stories. This is easily the most intense episode of In Defense of Ska. There are many violent stories, including the infamous Misfits show in San Francisco in the early 80s where the band hurls homophobic slurs at the crowd and then Paul Caiafa (aka Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein) nearly kills a kid. Eugene tells this and other stories in graphic detail. We also talk about Dead Kennedys and SSD in Staten Island, Bad Brains' famous 3-day run at CBGBs, Whipping Boy's first show ever (opening for Circle Jerks), and the time Eugene got jumped on his way to see The Clash film Rude Boy. He also tells us how his love for The Specials inspired him to go to college at Stanford, how he made a lot of money arm wrestling a group of guys and how he went to high school with the members of early New York dance/ska band Urban Blight. Plus we talk about his band Black Face which he did with Black Flag bassist Chuck Dukowski, and how Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi) tried to get them to change the name to Black Velvet because "Black Face is a fucked up name." Eugene explains why he didn't take Ian seriously (Hint: It's because he wrote "Guilty of Being White.")  Support the show
