In an insightful discussion on the "Tales from the Green Room" podcast, Reed Mathis provides host Dennis Strazulo and listeners with a detailed preview of his upcoming podcast series “The Gifts of Improvising” which debuts January 29, 2024 on the Osiris Media Podcast Network. Reed opens the door to a new, profound exploration of the role and challenge of artists as they navigate improvising the music of their heroes and legends, analyzed in detail during discussions with fellow musicians throughout 12 introspective episodes. Reed delves into the dynamics of the jam band scene and the authenticity of spontaneous musical creation. Previously connected with iconic projects like Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey and Tea Leaf Green, and with artists including Steve Kimock, Billy Strings, and Bill Kreutzmann, Reed shares the conception and evolution of his podcast with refreshing candor and excitement - describing it not merely as an exploration of improvisation but as a spotlight on the reenactment versus innovation debate within music. Listen as Reed challenges the norm of merely quoting musical heroes and urges a portrayal of personal truth through music. The essence of his message is about fostering a space where musicians are encouraged to "play themselves," offering a raw reflection of their true, creative essence rather than adhering strictly to established templates. The soon to be released series features an impressive roster of musicians, each bringing their unique experiences and insights to light, including: Joe Russo, Marco Benevento, Steve Kimmock, Adam McDougald, and Jay Lane taking a deep dive into musical philosophies and personal anecdotes that reveal much about these beloved names in music.“The Gifts of Improvising” also includes a touching homage to Phil Lesh, featuring reflections from Natalie Cressman, Elliot Peck, and Grahame Lesh - a moving tribute to Lesh's indelible impact on both Mathis's own career and the broader music landscape. Enjoy this discussion as Reed muses about the art and joy of truly improvising in anticipation of his podcast release.Linkshttps://www.instagram.com/reedmathis/https://www.facebook.com/reed.mathis.5/http://www.youtube.com/@reedmathis4623https://www.osirispod.com/podcasts/ MusicLazyLightning55a YouTube Channel: Reed Mathis' Electric Beethoven - 10/26/16 - MP WilliamsburgPhoto by Stefanie Atkinson Schwartz

Interview with Evan Taylor  Bernie Worrell Orchestra bandleader. Evan Taylor whose latest production is the posthumous Bernie Worrell: Wave From The WOOniverse about this release and some of his other diverse musical endeavors.   Bernie Worrell: Wave From The WOOniverse is a double album concocted in fourteen cities, issued on 12” LP vinyl a day after Bernie's birthday, (April 19) on Record Store Day 2024 by Org Music in conjunction with Loantaka Records as a Record Store Day “exclusive.” As of June 28 it's also available via streaming platforms. The release will be accompanied by a bound-to-be viral video of the title track directed by Los Angeles-based dancer, Madeline Riley.           Taylor has remained behind the scenes for most of his career. He worked in various capacities with Worrell, mike watt, Money Mark, Theresa Wayman (Warpaint), King Tuff, The Chapin Sisters, and Jimmy Destri of Blondie. He has made 1960's country-influenced records with members of Black Flag, participated in eclectic recording projects and performed with practically every member of Talking Heads. Evan's also released a string of critically acclaimed singles as part of the Art-Rock duo Purple Witch of Culver.  Evan has never identified with the archetype of “cosmic Funkateer.” He grew up with diverse tastes that ran from The Beach Boys to Prince. As a producer his brand has been “staying off-brand.” In 2022, Taylor was presented with a unique opportunity he felt he had been preparing for his entire career. Bernie Worrell: Wave From The WOOniverse addresses the abundance of unfinished work Bernie Worrell, a prolific writer and visionary, left behind when he passed away in 2016. These compositions remained untouched for a period of decades, collecting dust on reels of two-inch analog tape.    Eventually, the tapes were re-examined to analyze Bernie's nuanced and creative method. After a period of deep reflection, the Bernie Worrell estate decided it was time to complete his vision. With a series of Bernie's collaborators, contemporaries, and friends including Bootsy Collins, Sean Ono Lennon, Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads), Leo Nocentelli (The Meters), Fred Schneider (B52s), Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto), Steve Scales, Marc Ribot, Fred Wesley (James Brown, Parliament), Marco Benevento, Stanton Moore (Galactic), Steven Bernstein, Daru Jones (Jack White), Will Calhoun (Living Colour, mike watt, Norwood Fisher (Fishbone), Jared Samuel Elioseff, Kyp Malone and Jaleel Bunton (TV on the Radio),  Binky Griptite (Dap Kings), Nick Montoya, Paul Dooely, Alecia Chakour, Smokey Hormel, Ana Becker, Eric McFadden (Sgt. Splendor), Sarah La Puerta, Michael Rueben and many more innovators his initiative was completed with dedication to preserving the integrity of the magic which makes Bernie a beloved extraordinary soul. Also included on the album is a previously unreleased Funkadelic track, “Contusion,” which showcases Bernie's masterful work with the group.   https://loantaka-records.com/ . http://evantaylormusic.com.

Mike Dillon is a percussionist, vibraphonist, bandleader, singer-songwriter, and vocalist born in San Antonio Texas. He is a member of Critters Buggins, Les Claypool's Fancy Band, and Garage A Trois. He has performed with many musicians including Ani DiFranco, Galactic, Brave Combo, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Marco Benevento, Clutch, Claude Coleman Jr., and New Orleans musicians Kevin O'Day, Johnny Vidacovich, James  Singleton, and Ricky Lee Jones. Mike Dillon & Punkadelick makes its recorded debut with Inflorescence, an album of heady, instrumental rock highlighting a band deep in the throes of creative freedom, road tested and wild. Consisting of 10 tracks in 42-minutes, it's an expansive, focused and fearless collection, representing a world where Duke Ellington and Augustus Pablo rub shoulders with crate-digger exotica, the freak-funk of Parliament and the ‘anything fits' outsider ethos of acid-fried punks like The Meat Puppets. A trio featuring Mike Dillon (Ricki Lee Jones, Ani DiFranco, Les Claypool) on vibraphone, marimba, Prophet 6, congas, and bongos, Brian Haas (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey) on Fender Rhodes, piano, bass Moog and melodica and Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce) on drums, cymbals and vocals, Punkadelick is the unified vision of six hands creating a world that often sounds like the work of an ensemble three times the size. During 2020 and 2021, while many music venues were still shuttered, the group began touring, sweating their way through cuts Dillon and Haas had composed during quarantine writing sessions. Locking in on stage, it quickly became clear the band was functioning at a level that made the hair on their arms stand at attention—even for three live music veterans accustomed to life on the road.   July 27th Mike and Punkadelick are playing the Grog shop in Cleveland OH tickets here! https://grogshop.gs/event-details/13536034/mike-dillon-punkadelic-hello-3d-c-level/   Mike's Info https://www.mikedillonvibes.com/

My guest today is the bassist, songwriter, bandleader and all around awesome human being Karina Rykman.  A self-taught bassist and guitarist, Karina started playing in bands in and around New York City when she was barely a teenager, and was touring as a member of legendary keyboardist Marco Benevento's band while still attending college.  The stint in Benevento's band prepared Karina for forming her own trio and hitting the road, a period during which she caught the eyes and ears of some major players, among them Phish guitarist and band-leader Trey Anastasio.  Last year, she released her debut album, ‘Joyride,' a dizzying collection of psychedelic indie, alternative and jam-based tunes that made my top 10 list of rock albums for 2023. Anastasio co-produced the album, and lent his inimitable guitar stylings to half of the tracks.  Throughout ‘Joyride,', Karina's bass playing reveals the depth and breadth of her musical influences, and her always vibrant, sometimes playful, and occasionally dreamy vocals lead the listener on a journey through her colorful imagination.  Listeners in the Buffalo, NY area will be able to catch Karina and her trio as part of the Rail Rider Jamboree Festival on Saturday, March 23, at Holiday Valley in Ellicottville. Learn more and grab your tickets at railriderjam.com.  Welcome to Why Music Matters, Karina Rykman!

She shares some wisdom she picked up from Trey Anastasio, who helped Karina produce Joyride and contributed guitar to several tracks. Karina's unbounded exuberance shines through as she shares what she learned playing with Marco Benevento and how she has brought those lessons forward with her current bandmates Adam November (guitar) and Chris Corsico (drums). Karina's humility and gratitude are readily apparent as she considers her professional progress and looks forward to a busy 2024. She even shares a warning about the dangers of post-show baths! He studied at the Dartford Technical School and Sidcup Art College. After graduating, Richards befriended Jagger, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts, and Brian Jones and joined the Rolling Stones. As a member of the Rolling Stones, Richards also sings lead on some Stones songs. Richards typically sings lead on at least one song a concert, including "Happy", "Before They Make Me Run", and "Connection". Outside of his career with the Rolling Stones, Richards has also played with his own side-project, The X-Pensive Winos. He also appeared in three Pirates of the Caribbean films as Captain Teague, father of Jack Sparrow, whose look and characterisation was inspired by Richards himself. In 1989, Richards was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 2004 into the UK Music Hall of Fame with the Rolling Stones. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him fourth on its list of 100 best guitarists in 2011. In 2023, Rolling Stone's ranking was 15th.[1] The magazine lists fourteen songs that Richards wrote with Jagger on its "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" list.My favorite “Keith tune” in the Stone's songbook.  1978 version. "Before They Make Me Run" is a song by English rock band the Rolling Stones, featured on their 1978 album Some Girls.English musician, songwriter, singer and recording producer who is an original member, guitarist, secondary vocalist, and co-principal songwriter of the Rolling Stones. His songwriting partnership with the band's lead vocalist Mick Jagger is one of the most successful in history. His career spans over six decades, and his guitar playing style has been a trademark of the Rolling Stones throughout the band's career. Richards gained press notoriety for his romantic involvements and illicit drug use, and he was often portrayed as a countercultural figure.Written by guitaristKeith Richards, the song is a response to his arrest for heroin possession in Toronto in February 1977. The criminal charges and prospect of a prison sentence loomed over the Some Girls recording sessions and endangered the future of the Rolling Stones.[2]In the lyrics, Richards reflects unapologetically on his lifestyle up to that point. The line "it's another goodbye to another good friend" in the first verse can be interpreted as referring to Gram Parsons, Richards's close friend who died in 1973 from a drug overdose,[3] and/or to heroin itself: Richards had sought medical treatment for heroin addiction following his arrest in Toronto, and his resolution to overcome his addiction would be a significant factor in his upcoming trial.[4]Richards recorded the song in five days without sleeping.[5] Originally entitled "Rotten Roll", the song was recorded in a Paris studio in March 1978 during one of Mick Jagger's absences from the Some Girls sessions.[6] The completed track, "a high-energy rock & roller",[7] features Richards on lead vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, and bass; Ronnie Wood on pedal steel guitar, slide guitar and backing vocals; Charlie Watts on drums; and Jagger on backing vocals.Richards first performed the song in concert on the New Barbarians' tour of North America in 1979; it was not until the Steel Wheels Tour in 1989 that it entered the Rolling Stones' concert repertoireSHOW No. 4:                      Romeo and Juliet                                                Track #13                                                1:54 – 3:21 "Romeo and Juliet" is a rock[1][4][5] song by the British rock band Dire Straits, written by frontman Mark Knopfler. It first appeared on the 1980 album Making Movies and was released as a single in 1981.[6] The song subsequently appeared on the Dire Straits live albums Alchemy and On the Night, and later on Knopfler's live duet album with Emmylou Harris, Real Live Roadrunning (though Harris does not perform on the track). The song itself, written by Knopfler, was inspired by his failed romance with Holly Vincent, lead singer of the short-lived band Holly and the Italians. The song speaks of a Romeo who is still very much in love with his Juliet, but she now treats him like "just another one of [her] deals". Knopfler has both stated and implied that he believes Vincent was using him to boost her career. The song's line, "Now you just say, oh Romeo, yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him," refers to an interview with Vincent, where she says "What happened was that I had a scene with Mark Knopfler and it got to the point where he couldn't handle it and we split up.  OUTRO:                                Hard To Handle                                                Track #17                                                5:00 – 6:45 Otis Redding recorded Hard to Handle in late 1967, shortly before his death. It was released as a single in June 1968. By 1969, it was being covered by a number of people, and surprisingly, the Dead seem to have been one of the first. If anyone were to think of the least likely groups in ‘69 to cover some funky new R&B, the Dead would probably be on that list. They hadn't shown any interest in picking up new R&B covers since mid-1967, when they started doing Lovelight – since then, they had focused on their original ‘acid-rock' material. Many old covers dropped out of their setlists, and from summer '68 through winter '69, their shows were almost exclusively devoted to Anthem & Live/Dead suite material, with a few new Aoxomoxoa songs dropped in.But by March 1969, they seem to have felt the need for something new – the Live/Dead album was in the can, and their repertoire had not varied much in months. Aside from a couple sluggish, misbegotten renditions of Hey Jude that winter, Hard to Handle was their first new cover song in over a year. Over the course of the spring, they would gradually bring in more cover tunes, bringing back many songs they had stopped playing in previous years, and the shows would start to reflect a wider set of influences.Pigpen probably emulated Otis, and of course this song would have matched his strutting stage persona; it may have been his idea to cover it. The Dead must have known they could not recapture the tight, snappy Stax horn sound of Redding's original, and they didn't even try. Instead they adapted it to their loud, heavy, lumbering two-drum, two-guitar style – of course adding a big guitar solo. Pigpen had a set way of singing the song from the start, closely following Redding's phrasing, which would vary little over the next couple years; but the band would go through some dramatic changes in the way they played the song. (The next year, a bit lighter on their feet, they would also attempt James Brown's ‘Man's World' – not one of his funkiest efforts – but would only play it for about five months.) The Dead had long been fans of Otis Redding – in 1966-67, Pigpen was performing his ‘63 song ‘Pain in My Heart.' (Though the impetus to cover it may have come from the Rolling Stones' version.)Redding came to the Fillmore in December '66 – musicians were clamoring to Bill Graham that he needed to book Otis. When he came, according to Graham, “Every artist in the city asked to open for Otis. The first night, it was the Grateful Dead. Janis Joplin came at three in the afternoon the day of the first show to make sure that she'd be in front… Every musician then into music came.” *The Dead opened for Redding on 12/20/66; the next two nights, other bands opened. (The Dead went to play in Santa Clara.) Bill Graham was permanently impressed: “By far, Otis Redding was the single most extraordinary talent I had ever seen. There was no comparison, then or now... That was the best gig I ever put on in my entire life.” * Janis also mentioned that Otis was a particular inspiration to her. (I believe Ralph Gleason also wrote a review of one of the shows for the Chronicle, which I'd like to see.)When Garcia & Lesh appeared on Tom Donahue's FM show in April '67, they played Otis' cover of ‘Day Tripper' and reminisced about the show. Otis had an 18-piece band with him, and Garcia recalled that Otis did his standard show, “where the band would get up and play some numbers, and a girl singer would come up” and warm up the audience before Otis appeared.Lesh: “It was kind of scary to work with Otis… He tore it up!”Garcia: “Otis is really heavy… He tore the place apart… When he came on stage, it was like the whole place got about six times as big, and the band just got real snappy – it was so fine, and the music was really good.” The Dead debuted Hard to Handle at the Black & White Ball (Hilton Hotel, S.F.) , 3/15/69 – the very first song of the show! In their eagerness to tackle it, they perhaps neglected to rehearse it a few more times… They have trouble keeping together in the precise arrangement, and sometimes stumble around erratically before syncing up again. Garcia plays swooping slide throughout, but seems to have little idea what to do with it, so there's not much of a solo and they just sort of stagger forward aimlessly for a while. Pigpen is also a little confused about the verses. At the end the band thinks Pigpen's finished, but he continues with another verse, so they bring it to an abrupt end. Last played on December 31, 1982 at the Oakland Civic Auditorium.  Played it a total of 120 times.   Other stories:Cruise Ships have a very strict NO CANNABIS rule.  That sucksPhish tix for the Sphere are out. Her remarkable prowess on the bass guitar soon landed her a number of high-profile television gigs spanning America's Got Talent to backing up pop star Julia Michaels on TODAY. By the end of her senior year at NYU, Rykman's virtuoso talent and infectious spirit saw her invited to join pianist Marco Benevento's band (as recommended by Ween bassist Dave Dreiwitz), with whom she performed countless shows including dates with Vulfpeck, Dispatch, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Guster, and many more. Rykman soon formed her own namesake band, accompanied by Adam November (guitar, loopers, effects) and Chris Corsico (drums). She quickly earned a reputation as a mesmerizing, unmissable live act, lighting up an array of international stages with headline sets, show-stealing festival performances (including Bonnaroo, Peach Music Festival, and Sweetwater 420 Fest), shows alongside Khruangbin, Guster, and The Disco Biscuits (among others), and recent appearances sitting in with the 8G Band on NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers. That same spellbinding power was soon captured on a series of independent singles, including “Elevator” and the million-streaming “Plants,” both of which have now been newly enhanced for Rykman's debut album, JOYRIDE. Written and recorded with childhood friend, producer Gabe Monro, the album serves as a vivid canvas for Rykman's vibrant expression and chameleonic songcraft. We are so excited to have Ari Joshua as our guest on No Simple Road This week! For years, shamanistic guitarist and composer Ari Joshua has been one of those “musician's musicians” who those “in the know” rave about but remains under the radar to the public. Struggles with substance abuse; a severe car accident; Ari's commitment to music education with the successful school he founded, The Music Factory; and the daunting task of mixing have kept him in something of a creative holding pattern.Ari is finally opening his vault and sharing a catalog of recordings that feature his masterful musicianship alongside such revered instrumentalists as four-time Grammy-winning artist Robert Glasper, Marco Benevento, Joe Russo, Delvon Lamarr, Skerik, and members of the Trey Anastasio Band. These tracks will be issued in various configurations, and they document a spiritual journey of a prodigious talent all-consumed by his passion for music. We talk with Ari about:Growing up on the east coast and receiving a scholarship to music school. His struggles and triumphs in running his own music school, The Music Factory.Having Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam as a mentor.Buying the building for The Music Factory with the help of local investors. His early connection to frequency and sound.Overcoming his fear of sharing his art. What it means to find our own personal 'Black Hole' and what we do with it when we find it.Having the guts to just 'go for it' when you feel something move you.How the Grunge Era and the Seattle music scene shaped his life and sound.Finding focus when you have a ton of things on your plate.Ways to serve your own creative abilities.... and so much more!SONG AT THE START FO THE INTERVIEW: 'Lest's Do It Right Now' (feat. In this episode, Dr. Leah and Taraleigh talk with bassist Karina Rykman about her immense love of live music and journey of becoming a professional musician herself. She shares her philosophy of saying yes to aligned offers, even when fear and imposter syndrome pop up. She discusses how she is a “rejector of traditional ways of being” and how she learned to play bass and guitar strictly by watching and listening to her musical influences. Karina recounts her early live music experiences and discovers that attending Bonnaroo in 9th grade with the Anastasio family was what really hooked her in the jam scene. For the “Did you Know” Dr. Leah shares how certain live music can feel like a coming “home” and the entry into a world never thought possible. Taraleigh encourages listeners to reflect on their hook into live music in the “Daily Jam.” Karina Rykman plays bass, sings, jumps around, and laughs a lot. In doing so, she has garnered a rare attention and avid listenership. Straddling the worlds of jam rock and indie pop drenched in psychedelia, Karina's effervescent presence comes to life in musical form. With only six singles released, Karina has built a reputation as an unmissable live act. Her debut single “Plants” reached over a million streams, with the other singles not far behind. She can hardly contain herself about her yet-to-be-released debut studio record, as the best is truly yet to come. Karina's power trio sounds larger than the sum of their parts. With Adam November (Guitar/Looper/Effects) and Chris Corsico (Drums), Karina has headlined clubs across America, bringing her rapturous unbridled energy to her reciprocally passionate fans. In 2016, Karina joined Marco Benevento's band on bass. With Benevento, she's opened for Vulfpeck, Dispatch, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Guster, and many more. We'd be remiss to exclude her television appearances on The Today Show, America's Got Talent, a feature on ABC7, and most recently, in the 8G Band on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Mike and I had a great time talking to Soul Jazz Keyboardist Robert Walter about his high school band Daddy Long Legs, his current band: The Greyboy Allstars and what it's like being on tour with Pink Floyd's Roger Waters.     Robert is heading back on tour in March 2023 with Roger's band for the European leg of the tour. About Robert: A founding member of the seminal groove band The Greyboy Allstars, organ, keyboard and synth sharp-shooter Robert Walter splits his time between his own 20th Congress, The Greyboy Allstars, and a robust film soundtrack career in Los Angeles.   Initially formed as the backing band for rare groove luminary DJ Greyboy, The Greyboy Allstars became a longterm project for Walter with a string of critically acclaimed albums, world tours. The band quickly became home to some of the most revered players on the modern music scene.   The Greyboy Allstars' success also served as a platform for the band's individual members to launch highly successful and substantially diverse solo careers. To flex his desire to compose in a way that was just outside of Greyboy's wheelhouse, Walter formed 20th Congress and recorded and toured heavily through the late '90s and '00s.    The band featured a rotating crew of brilliant improvisers and genre-bending virtuosos over the years including Stanton Moore, Joe Russo, Will Bernard, and Cochemea Gastelum, Simon Lott, Victor Little, Chris Alford, Scott Metzger, Andy Hess, and John Kimock,   A brilliant improviser with a gift for riveting hooks and unstoppable grooves, Walter set out to create songs that blur the line between the composed and the spontaneous; an album with a narrative arc that isn't tethered to concrete ideas. He uses a full arsenal of keyboards, synths and electronics and draws together the varied aspects of his career, from his film soundtrack work with Michael Andrews to his free-ranging improvisational excursions with the likes of genre jugglers like Marco Benevento, Skerik and Mike Gordon. ******** KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts.     Visit our YouTube Channel where you can see 3 short video segments from our interviews.  Just search "know good music". When you're a master craftsman, as Marco Benevento is, and have a wealth of tools at your disposal, as is also the case with Marco's extensive inventory of many different types of keyboards and synths, creating on a whim, brilliant works of art, is merely an exercise in timing and availability. With the world seemingly shut down Marco indeed had the time, retreating back to his lair, his home studio, he wanted to create something entirely on his own, a masterwork of sorts, which displayed his wide influence, but also could boil down into something uniquely Benevento. With the first volume of those efforts complete and out now, I decided it would be a good time to catch up with Marco, and chat about this new album, family and more.    First song: Do You Want Some Magic Second song: Winter Rose See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast features an interview with pianist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer, who has been a fixture of the New York experimental music rock and jazz scene since 1999, Marco Benevento. Marco's music covers a wide swath of ground, seemingly connecting the dots in the vast space between LCD Soundsystem and legendary musician Leon Russell. His songwriting is smart and earthy, yet simultaneously pulsating with dance rock energy. Benevento's high energy live shows — fronting a three-piece band currently composed by bassist Karina Rykman and drummer Dave Butler — have led to numerous high profile appearances, ranging from Carnegie Hall, to High Sierra Music Festival, Peach Festival, and beyond. Marco is the founder and recording engineer of Fred Short, a recording studio in Upstate New York, and a member of the groups Benevento/Russo Duo and Joe Russo's Almost Dead. In the studio, he's collaborated with the likes of Richard Swift (The Shins, Nathaniel Rateliff), Leon Michels (Lee Fields, Freddie Gibbs) and Simone Felice (The Felice Brothers, The Lumineers) among others. While Marco's work is prolific and all worthy of discussion, this episode focuses on his forthcoming album Benevento. Titled as a nod to Paul McCartney's first solo album, what Benevento amounts to is forty minutes of small-batch psychedelia in which, with few exceptions, Marco played all of the instruments. He also produced and engineered the album, all from Fred Short Studios, located at his Woodstock, NY home. Deeply indebted to the West African psychedelia of artists such as Kiki Gyan, Francis Bebey and William Onyeabor, the songs are rhythmic and repetitive, built into thick mosaics of sound. In this episode host Michael Shields and Marco Benevento delve into the album's influences and the manner in which it all came to life within his upstate studio. They discuss how the lyrics were created in collaboration with Al Howard, a San Diego-based poet, and what it was like playing all instruments on the album himself. They also discuss a festival Benevento is curating in Accord, New York this June called Follow The Arrow (tickets available now!), and much, much more. Marco Benevento is a world-class pianist, singer, songwriter, and producer best-known for his solo work, as well as his playing with Joe Russo's Almost Dead, the Benevento/Russo Duo, and GRAB. He has toured and performed all over the world, enrapturing fans of all genres with his eloquently fluent playing style and creative approach to both songwriting and improvisation. Aside from releasing 7 (soon to be 8) stellar studio records, Marco is also the co-founder of Royal Potato Family, an independent record label home to some of your favorite artists including The New Mastersounds, Neal Casal, Yellowbirds, Scott Metzger and many other exceptional musicians.  ----------- *DISCLAIMER: This podcast does NOT provide medical advice. Salute the Songbird with Maggie Rose

Bassist Karina Rykman joined Marco Benevento's band as a replacement to Dave Dreiwitz (Ween /Joe Russo's Almost Dead) in 2016 and since then, has developed a permanent and powerful presence in the band, playing headlining shows, festival sets, and opening for bands such as Vulfpeck, Dispatch, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Guster, and more. Karina is Maggie's guest this week and the two discuss growing up in New York City, where she became obsessed with The Allman Brothers, what it means to have ‘broad musical ears', and the wisdom she gained from a mentor that helps her deal with imposter syndrome.Aside from her gigs with Benevento, Karina's musical résumé has almost grown too large to keep track of, but includes highlights we'd be remiss to exclude: a performance on the Today Show with Julia Michaels, a now-famous soundcheck at Madison Square Garden with Phish, playing in the backing band (in front of Howard Stern and co. at Radio City Music Hall) on America's Got Talent with a flame-spewing helmet on her head, gigs with the Everyone Orchestra alongside members of moe., The Disco Biscuits, Soulive, Robert Randolph, + many more) and finally, the formation of her own band.Karina put out two singles in 2019: Plants and Elevator, as well as two more in 2020 (City Kids & Dirty South) – the songs have garnered six-figure streaming numbers + air time on Satellite radio. A few live highlights include opening for Khruangbin at The Capitol Theatre, playing moe.down and Hulaween, and a plethora of headlining shows for ravenous fans. The group has welcomed special guests including Nels Cline, Robert Walter, Skerik, + more. Welcome KARINA RYKMAN, bassist of Marco Benevento's trio, to Episode 046. A dynamic solo artist, skilled with both the bass and guitar, a lightning bolt of youthful exuberance, dedicated metalhead, hip-hop enthusiast, Phish kid, podcaster, quintessential New Yorker, and all-around swag factory. Karina is riding the wave of her new single/video "No Occasion", and she checks from NYC via telephone for an illuminating conversation that details her meteoric ascent from the Upper East Side towards near-total domination. Introducing KARINA RYKMAN @ 9:30 / Interview @ 12:30 The wide-ranging conversation starts with taking the temp of NYC, as the Big Apple springs to life out from under fifteen months of pandemic protocols. Karina talks about her role as co-host of the weekly podcast 3 From the 7, alongside Raffaela Kenny-Cincotta (Assistant Editor, Relix). She gives us the scoop on her solo musical endeavors, new video "No Occasion", and the evolution of her performing under her own name with bandmates Adam November and Chris Corsico. The only child of Columbia professors, we hear all about Karina's halcyon days discovering the magic of the riff, her passion for heavy metal and hip-hop alike. The origin story of picking up an axe, and where her ear, heart, and spirit led her; including NYU, where she developed her own music biz course curriculum, and later Rocks Off NYC, where she produced rock boat cruises around the island of Manhattan. In addition to her experiences making music with a once-in-a-generation-genius like bandleader Marco Benevento, we get a look deeper inside Karina's journey. From superjams with Nels Cline, John Medeski, Billy Martin and Benevento, to hanging with Anthrax and Testament on their titanic anniversary tour. Karina reflects on her hesher roots logging stage and studio time with nascent heavy bands like ShitKill, White Collar Crime LLC, as well as Crescent Moon (Dave Dreiwitz power trio), and underground kings The Sound of Urchin.  Rykman shows proper respects to her fuzz bass heroes past and present, as well as the lineage of women who've rocked before her, and her budding friendship with Laura Lee (Khruangbin). She details her special connections with mentors and gurus like Dreiwitz, Tomato (The Sound of Urchin), Alex Skolnick (Testament), among other movers, shakers, virtuosos and luminaries. Lastly, Karina touches on her relationship with Trey, Sue and the Anastasio kids, her decade-plus passion for all things Phish, and so much more. Thank you to the incredible Ms. Karina Rykman! KRAZ Plus One + Upful Life = The Guest List  @ 9min: Shock G  R.I.P. Tribute  @ 22min: Introducing CHRIS HARFORD / @ 27min : Interview Singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Chris Harford is a man of many talents, and wears numerous artistic hats. The veteran-rocker checks in from Central Jersey, and unpacks his own fascinating journey in progress. For over 90 minutes, Harford earnestly reveals an abundance of perspective. Among the more fulfilling conversations I've had the pleasure of hosting in the podcast medium.  Right off the top, we go ham singing the praises of reggae music and its medicinal, spiritual qualities, especially in times of peril. The erstwhile sound-scientist expounds on his dub reggae syndicate BlancDUBlanc, before we hop in the wayback machine to the Elektra Records era with Chris Harford & the First Rays of the New Rising Sun. Plus a special Nov.2000 Amfibian show in Burlington VT, with Tom Marshall and Trey Anastasio, one of the first JamBase reviews yours truly ever published. From Bob Marley at the Philly Spectrum in '79, to Richard Thompson and Lee Perry working on his records, from London to Boston, New Hope PA and Hopewell, New Jersey too, Chris explores what it means to be in a Band of Changes, as he details his deep, filial roots with the likes of Sir Joe Russo, Scott Metzger, Marco Benevento, Chuck Treece, Dana Colley, Dean Ween, Robbie Seahag Mangano, plus the STAX-like scene and studio coming together with these cats (and more!) in the fertile Garden State soil. One of the more unbelievable tales Chris unspools is the story behind his dub-cover EP of "Wind of Change", yep, you read that right, the titanic political power ballad from the halcyon days of the hair-band era. This is my favorite part in a conversation filled with choice nuggets. All that jazz plus a tribute to Shock G of Digital Underground, who recently transitioned, truly a gut punch in a pandemic-year that seemingly never ends. It's hard to keep up, or even grieve, with so much loss, however I felt called to send my man Shock G (Gregory Jacobs) up with his propers, and his flowers. I believe Brad Barr is one of the more unique musical voices of our time. A musician who truly knows no bounds, his openness, curiosity and deep listening abilities have accompanied him around the world many times over in his 20+ years of touring and music making. Brad spent the better part of the 90's and 2000's tirelessly traversing the country with his brother Andrew Barr (drums) and good friend Marc Friedman (bass) with an exceptional trio known as The Slip based out of Providence, RI. As their song-based but highly improvisational music organically evolved over the years from a Scofield-esque jazzy-jam band, to a bonafide indie rock power trio (with plenty of other territory covered in between), they developed a strong and extremely enthusiastic fanbase that on any given night were just as excited about the band's improvisational risks as the rewards. The Slip eventually teamed up with the beloved folk-singer Nathan Moore and keyboard whiz Marco Benevento to highlight some of their more old fashioned Rock N' Roll leanings in the festival favorite super group Surprise Me Mr. Davis. For the better part of the last decade Brad and his brother Andrew, now based in Montreal, have been putting out some of their most focused and refined music yet in an outfit they created along with harpist Sarah Page called The Barr Brothers. With Brad's lyrics and songwriting more at the forefront than ever and three Secret City Records releases under their belt, The Barr Brothers are quickly and steadily building immense international acclaim. I have a unique relationship with Brad (as well as his brother Andrew) as he has been one of the most pivotal and influential musicians in my life since I was 14 years old. Besides musicians that I play with regularly, I believe I have seen Brad and Andrew play live more times than any other group of musicians in my life. In this episode Brad and I discuss how being a father has altered his life and music, ways in which his perception of "World Music" has evolved, his elusive songwriting (non) process, and ponder why I can't find a good bagel in Northern California, among other things. Enjoy!

Reed spent 15 years exploring the outer realms of improvisation and composition with progressive jazz/rock/groove band Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey which he co-founded in 1994 with pianist Brian Haas. Reed went on to join the San Francisco jam/rock band Tea Leaf Green with whom he also composed and produced records for, over a 6+ year tenure. He's also toured and recorded with many artists as a sideman including Bill Kreutzmann (Grateful Dead), Mickey Hart (Grateful Dead), Steve Kimock, Marco Benevento, Robert Walter, Page McConnell (Phish) and many many others. He now leads his own group, Electric Beethoven which takes Beethoven's symphonies, expands the forms, adds improvisation and presents them in a rock and roll electric dance context. Reed is a wealth of musical and historical knowledge. In this episode we discuss many different topics including how he approaches improvisation with his band, how Beethoven's music can be traced to New Orleans music and the Roots of Rock n' Roll, why he has at times struggled fitting into the Grateful Dead music playing scene, and much more.
