Welcome to 3 Bad Brothers, A Beastie Boys Breakdown. For the next 8 weeks, the Dad Bod Rap Pod crew and some special guests will be going album by album through the Beastie Boys' career. This week we are focused on Ad Rock, MCA and Mike D's first album, the wildly successful Licensed To Ill with insight from Dante Ross, who ran in the same circles as the Boys at this formative time in their lives. We will track the band from punk shows to NYC nightclubs, to arena tours, examining their rhymes, beats, cultural impact and more through discussion, interviews, and then score each album on a system we affectionately call the Rick Rubric. Licensed to Ill is thought of as one of rap music's early masterpieces, so we re-listen to the seminal album to see how it holds up nearly 40 years later as rap music, as the beginning of a vast and exploratory career, and as a product of early Def Jam Records, the so-called nerve center of the nascent hip-hop industry at the time. Huge thanks to Dante Ross for joining us to provide cultural context and crack jokes. Please tune in next week when we step through the doors of the cult classic Paul's Boutique. ~~~ TL;DR: It's an updated remake of a Beastie Boys parody about Dr. Demento and Whimsical Will. ~~~ One of the most iconic 'Side 1, Track 1' songs in the history of Generation X is the first song on the legendary 1986 Diamond Certified debut album by the Beastie Boys "Licensed To Ill", titled "Rhymin' And Stealin'". ... Far less iconic is the great Luke Ski's 1997 Certified Plastic sophomore album "Shadows Of The Bunghole". For that album, I had the oh-so-clever idea to begin the album with a parody of "Rhymin' And Stealin'", with the gag being that if someone put the disc in and started playing it, another person nearby hearing the album start would be fooled into thinking the album playing was "Licensed To Ill", and then when the first sound bites and lyrics dropped, they would be overcome with a feeling of jocular bamboozlement. Whether or not that ever occurred in real life is unknown and assumed not ever have actually happened. After nearly 2 years of finally being able to listen to "The Dr. Demento Show" on the actual radio, I felt the need to pay tribute to the show, to Dr. Demento (a.k.a. Barret Hansen) himself, as well as the weekly purveyor of the "Demented News" on the show, "Whimsical Will" Simpson. So that led me to make a parody of the aforementioned Beastie's song, titling mine "The Doctor And William". I call this type of song a 'forced parody', in which there is no clever wordplay or other logical or parallel connection between the original song and subject matter being discussed in the parody, making it obvious that the author (in this case, me) just REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted to parody THAT SONG about THAT SUBJECT despite the fact that it doesn't make any sense to do so intellectually. So, having copped to that, I still really liked what I did with it, with my other MCs making up my Beastie parody trio being J. Styles (Jason Stahl, best friend since the 4th grade) and DJ Skrabble (my brother J.T. Sienkowski). The good Doctor never played this track on his show, but Whimsical Will did report on the song during the July 6th, 1997 edition of the Demented News. 27 years later, an impending celebration of Dr. Demento's birthday made me think it would be fun to give this track an update and perform it live at the celebration with the help of some friends. So I commissioned Professor Shyguy to make a new backing track (and also mix this final studio version), so that I, the great Luke Ski (doing the King Ad-Rock parts), along with Devo Spice (MCA) and Tony Goldmark (Mike D.), and also along with the chanting assistance of Chris Mezzolesta of Power Salad, Insane Ian, and ShoEboX of Worm Quartet, performed it for Dr. D. to the jocular bamboozlement of everyone in attendance. In conclusion, for the millionth time, thank you to Barret Hansen, a.k.a. Dr. Demento, and "Whimsical Will" Simpson, for bringing so much joy, laughter, and found family together with your decades upon decades of demented news, mad music, and crazy comedy. We owe it all to you. And we will never ever forget to stay deee-mented! Will the good Doctor play "The Doctor And William (2025 Edition)" on his show? Perhaps he might if the fans REQUEST for him to play it, either from "The Dr. Demento Show" Request Page, or post it with the word REQUEST at The OFFICIAL Dr. Demento Show Facebook Page!
It's not every day that we at What the Riff?!? review a rap album, but the Beastie Boys aren't your every day rap group either. Hailing from New York City, Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz, Adam “MCA” Yauch, and Michael “Mike D” Diamond came out of an experimental hardcore punk band (think “punk” but faster) called The Young Aborigines. After changing their name to the Beastie Boys, they saw some local success from a comedy hip hop single based on a prank call to a Carvel Ice Cream franchise. They then began to incorporate more rap and hip hop into their sets, and ended up connecting with Rick Rubin, who formed Def Jam Recordings with Russell Simmons. Many of their songs were locally distributed, and led to uncomfortable situations when three white guys would show up to perform for a mostly black audience that had heard their music but never saw the group. Their courage and live performance skills won the audience over.Shortly after supporting Madonna as an opening act on the Virgin Tour in 1985, the band recorded their debut studio and breakthrough album, Licensed to Ill. It was released by Def Jam and Columbia Records, and became one of Columbia Records' fastest-selling debut records, and had shipped over ten million copies in the United states by 2015. It was also a critical success, and was selected as one of "The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums." It was hailed for hits stylized rapping, and its combination of hip hop and punk sensibilities. The Beastie Boys would go on to greater heights of stardom in the mid to late 90's as they moved in a more alternative direction, but this is where it all started.Lynch brings us this illin' record for today's podcast. No Sleep Till BrooklynThe song that opens side 2 is inspired by an exhausting tour, and it chronicles many of the events that wear the band out along with their determination to not rest until they get back home to Brooklyn. It is often the closing song at their concerts. It also features a solo guitar riff by Kerry King of the heavy metal band Slayer. Paul RevereThis song is a fictionalized account of how the Beastie Boys met. It was inspired by an incident when they encountered Joseph Simmons aka "Run" of Run-D.M.C. in a recording studio. It features a reversed beat from an 808 drum machine.Hold It Now, Hit ItThis was the first single to be released from the album, and was ranked number 27 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop. The video switches between concert footage, and the band lip synching in front of a fish-eye lens. Brass MonkeyThis is a later-produced song that takes its name from an alcoholic drink by the Heublein Company. It samples Wild Sugar's “Bring It Here” in the song. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:If I Only Had A Brain by Ray Bolger and Judy Garland (from the motion picture “The Wizard of Oz”)Actor, dancer, and singer Ray Bolger who played the scarecrow in “The Wizard of Oz” died in January of 1987. STAFF PICKS:Still In Hollywood by Concrete BlondeWayne kicks off the staff picks with the debut single from American alternative rock group Concrete Blonde's first and self-titled album. This post-punk sound was bubbling up in the LA street scene at the time, and the lyrics portray a life in Hollywood where the town drags you down. Right Next Door (Because of Me) by Robert CrayBruce's staff pick is a song off Robert Cray's fifth studio album, “Strong Persuader.” The lyrics chronicle an infidelity breaking up a marriage as told from the man who had an affair with the next door wife. Cray played with a number of artists, and was at the final concert with Stevie Ray Vaughan before his death in a helicopter crash. Too Hot to Stop by Benjamin OrrRob brings us a solo single from the second vocalist of The Cars. This keyboard-heavy piece was off Orr's only solo album entitled “The Lace.” After they released their Greatest Hits album in 1985, The Cars briefly split up to pursue solo projects, and both Orr and Ocasek hit the charts.Land of Confusion by GenesisLynch closes out the staff picks with a rare political track from Genesis that questions global leadership and the threat of nuclear war during the cold war era. It is famous for its video which uses puppets from Peter Fluck and Roger Law caricaturing political figures of the time, and the band members themselves. COMEDY TRACK:Ronnie's Rap by Ron and the DC CrewRonald Reagan was a hot commodity for comedy in 1987, as this satirical rap shows. TRIMMING THE CLASSIC POD: “What's the time, it's time to get ill“. Beastie Boys' 1986 debut album ‘Licensed To Ill' was a game changer for the rap genre. The first rap album to reach number one in the US; it has sold over 10M copies there alone. But which songs are least deserving of a place on this classic? Which are the best? That's what podcast hosts Stephen & Paul discussed with lifelong BB fans - Bryan Borthwick and author Mark Poole. We're ready to fight for our right to party. Are you? Born to a single, loving, hippie mother and possessing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Rutgers, Brandi Merolla didn't recognize the brightly lit storefront at 4th & Broadway. She was on her way home in the fall of 1983 when she came upon this neon temple. As she walked up to open the door, she saw a sign that said “HELP WANTED”. Brandi asked for an application and when the clerk at the Info Desk saw her resume and her art background she told Brandi “Why don't you apply for the Art Department?” Brandi had no idea that this new, huge record store employed artists and soon her life would change in a way she couldn't imagine. On this week's episode, Brandi Merolla takes us through her time at Tower during the infancy of Store 125 in The Village and all the opportunities and events she was a part of during this fascinating time in Tower's history. Brandi created backdrop displays for the in stores of Iggy Pop, Fela, Kate Bush, The Cure, Souxsie & the Banshees, Lou Reed, Paul Young, Violent Femmes, Timbuk 3, Samantha Fox, and Max Roach.4th & Broadway's front window was prime NYC real estate and Brandi tells us about a time she got a thumbs up from an artist whose work she recreated in the window and then later collaborating with The Beastie Boys for their window display before their debut “Licensed To Ill” came out. Hint: They didn't get everything they wanted. Hers is a story of opportunity, loss and ultimately redemption. When Brandi left Tower, it wasn't on her terms. But despondent over losing this $4.25 an hour job she would have gladly continued to work, someone whispered in her ear that this was the best thing that could have ever happened to her. Soon Brandi was taking all of the skills she learned at Tower and making foam core displays for 90% of the record labels based in NYC. She also parlayed this into a position with FAO Schwartz and a 20 year affiliation with The Howard Stern show where she has probably been exposed to more foam core displays of Gary Dellabate's teeth than anyone in the tri-state area. Join us for this fascinating story on “2500 DelMonte Street: The Oral History of Tower Records”. Also, we open this week's episode with a tribute to Patti Drosins, wife of Russ Solomon who passed away at the end of November 2022.

Dem Vinyl Boyz are back again and this week they're scratching 'Licensed to Ill' a classic record from the eighties by Rock n Roll Hall of Famers The Beastie Boys. This album was a pioneer for hip-hop history as it was the first hip-hop album to ever top the Billboard 200, was certified Platinum, and it sold over 10 million copies. Licensed To Ill was a pun based on a 1965 imitation James Bond film, Licensed To Kill. Strangely, the album pre-dated a real James Bond movie entitled License To Kill by three years. The album's cover artwork which has gone down in infamy was created by collage artist World B Omes and illustrated an airplane crashing into the side of a cliff. Held up to a mirror, the plane's serial number, 3MTA3, reads like “EATME”, which was on purpose of course. The inspiration for the songs on this album came from 'Run-DMC', whose “Rock Box” had combined rap and rock elements two years prior. Make sure to subscribe and follow for our latest reviews.

Everyone knows the Bums cast more pods than Phyllis Diller, but do they know about this review of Beastie Boys' pivotal 1986 album, "Licensed To Ill?" Join your favorite lil' stinkers for another session of games, freestyles, and unhinged critical dialogue.
“Three idiots make a masterpiece” is how Rolling Stone characterized the Beastie Boys Licensed to Ill upon its release in 1986.
