From early mystic folk inclinations to more fried and psychedelic work, Ben Chasny's Six Organs of Admittance project has never settled into an easy, definable zone. But 2024 sees the Six Organs sonic universe expanding kaleidoscopically, even by Chasny's prodigious standards. First was Time Is Glass, an album that documented his return to Humboldt County; then Jinxed By Being, a collaboration with ambient dub master Shackleton, and on September 27th, Companion Rises (Twig Harper Remix), which finds Chasny's 2022 album Companion Rises completely reimagined and re-created by sound artist Twig Harper. The results are unlike anything you've ever heard in the Six Organs catalog—though it's all part of the design, Chasny says. For this return visit to Transmissions, Chasny joins host Jason P. Woodbury to discuss his trio of 2024 releases, his experiences playing with David Tibet's apocalyptic avant-garde collective Current 93, his vision for the DIY recording zine Head Voice, the sounds of spiritualism, and cultivating online community through the Six Organs Patreon. Plus: Animator Mark Neeley drops in for a quick chat about Pure Animation for Now People, his new minute-long, hand drawn collaboration with Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo. Friends, How does music become meaningful? How does it become meaning? And what can we learn about reality from music without reducing music to its function? Rudolf Steiner said “The music of the spheres is a reality. As soon as we come into the spiritual world which lies beyond the soul-world, we are in a world which lives altogether in sound and song, in melody and harmony, and harmonies of spoken sound. Out of these inner relationships of sound the human ear is formed. “ I invited guitarist and songwriter BEN CHASNY AKA SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE on the show to discuss all of this. Ben last appeared on the show way back on AEWCH 45 when we talked about Rudolf Steiner and the spiritual aspects of intervals. Well... sort of. Ben's actually been on every episode for quite some time because we recreated the AEWCH theme song (originally co-composed with AEWCH guest, Jeb Havens) together. On this episode, he plays the song live and we discuss writing it together. We talk about the essential aspects of music, if there are any. And we look at the spiritual influencer culture of podcasting that has eroded its credibility over the years. At the end, Ben plays "The Mission" from the recent Six Organs of Admittance album Time Is Glass, which is, as it turns out, about me and my boyfriend.
On today's episode, I talk to musician Ben Chasny. Born in Los Angeles, Ben's family moved to rural Northern California when he was young. His recording debut was a heavy, free rock project named Plague Lounge, whose album The Wicker Image, was released conjointly between the New World of Sound and Holy Mountain labels in 1996. Holy Mountain released many of Ben's albums as Six Organs of Admittance as well, starting with his first self-titled album in 1998. Since then, he's released just about three dozen albums and EPs as Six Organs. Ben also plays in the wonderful psyche/noise rock band Comets on Fire, who have four albums on labels like Alternative Tentacles and Sub Pop, and Ben's latest album as Six Organs of Admittance, Time Is Glass, was released at the end of April on Drag City, and folks, it's fantastic! Ben Chasny discusses the lovely new Six Organs of Admittance album, Time is Glass, his return to northern California after many years living throughout the United States, the politically charged conversation we had when Ranga was on the show and made some incorrect 2016 U.S. presidential election predictions, getting himself a dog and reading about demon familiars, living in the moment and spiritual practices, unreliable narrators, shifting pronouns, and songs that contain multitudes, a Simpsons easter egg, touring again, other future plans, and much more.Support vish on Patreon! Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance joins us for a great talk on a different branch of the underground. Six Organs has provided some incredible outer folk and expansive guitar work since the 90s. His newest album "Sleep Tones" is a full on double LP or pure ambient just released on VDSQ. Chasny has also worked closely with David Tibet, from being in the live Current 93 line up to handling some guitar on the magnificent "The Light is Leaving Us All." For the ExtraNoisextra segment on the patreon, we've included one side of the "Sleep Tones" album. This selection comes right after the interview to send you to the dream side.

Adam, Will, and Sandra discuss the two most undeniable masterpieces from Van Morrison's oeuvre. Adam had heard Van as a kid, but wouldn't become acquainted with the total mastery and genius of the songwriter until reading Lester Bangs' essay on Van's '67 swan song Astral Weeks and finally listened to the entirety of the record himself. It totally changed his life. Van recorded Astral Weeks, ranked by critics overall as the 4th greatest album of popular music history, when he was only 22 fucking years old! It is shocking the extent to which this young man was in touch with the full range of his humanity. Lester Bangs wrote: "It sounded like the man who made Astral Weeks was in terrible pain, pain most of Van Morrison's previous works had only suggested; but like the later albums by the Velvet Underground, there was a redemptive element in the blackness, ultimate compassion for the suffering of others, and a swath of pure beauty and mystical awe that cut right through the heart of the work." Veedon Fleece wouldn't be released until 1974, five albums after Astral Weeks, but now can be seen to function as Astral's spiritual sequel. The most obscenely overlooked album in Van Morrison's oeuvre, there are fascinating things happening lyrically here. Not to mention, it is the only record in which Van seems comfortable expressing and showing off the full range of the seismic instrument that is his voice. "I'm not a good enough writer to explain how magical [Veedon Fleece] is," says Ben Chasny of the freak folk/psych band Six Organs of Admittance. "You'll just have to trust me." Do you want to see God? Listen to Van Morrison. When the interview suggested he might be a spiritual person, Ben Chasny blanched, explaining, “I'm actually a total nihilist.”Sixteen years later, he confesses that the answer was contrarian to a fault. It's easy to arrive at the conclusion, listening to a lengthy back catalogue that finds him releasing the 20th album under the Six Organs of Admittance moniker. But he's also very much someone who refuses to be pigeon-holed, as the industry was clearly attempting to do at the time, amid the burgeoning freak folk scene. But Chasny and Six Organs continue to break new ground, drawing on a wide range of influences, from the industrial bands of his youth to the hexadic card system he developed for composing music.

This week on the show, Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance. His new album is called The Veiled Sea, out this week via Three Lobed Records. Six Organs records can often sound very different from each other—think quiet acoustic sketches or long, blown out psych epics—but this one is a whole new thing entirely, with wild glam inspired solos over wild riffs—plus there's a Faust cover. Chasny stopped by to discuss the new album, his work with Comets on Fire, his trio with Sir Richard Bishop and Chris Corsano, Rangda, the dubious “freak folk” term and much more.
