From early mystic folk inclinations to more fried and psychedelic work, Ben Chasny's Six Organs of Admittance project has never settled into an easy, definable zone. But 2024 sees the Six Organs sonic universe expanding kaleidoscopically, even by Chasny's prodigious standards. First was Time Is Glass, an album that documented his return to Humboldt County; then Jinxed By Being, a collaboration with ambient dub master Shackleton, and on September 27th, Companion Rises (Twig Harper Remix), which finds Chasny's 2022 album Companion Rises completely reimagined and re-created by sound artist Twig Harper. The results are unlike anything you've ever heard in the Six Organs catalog—though it's all part of the design, Chasny says. For this return visit to Transmissions, Chasny joins host Jason P. Woodbury to discuss his trio of 2024 releases, his experiences playing with David Tibet's apocalyptic avant-garde collective Current 93, his vision for the DIY recording zine Head Voice, the sounds of spiritualism, and cultivating online community through the Six Organs Patreon. Plus: Animator Mark Neeley drops in for a quick chat about Pure Animation for Now People, his new minute-long, hand drawn collaboration with Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo. Friends, How does music become meaningful? How does it become meaning? And what can we learn about reality from music without reducing music to its function? Rudolf Steiner said “The music of the spheres is a reality. As soon as we come into the spiritual world which lies beyond the soul-world, we are in a world which lives altogether in sound and song, in melody and harmony, and harmonies of spoken sound. Out of these inner relationships of sound the human ear is formed. “ I invited guitarist and songwriter BEN CHASNY  AKA SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE on the show to discuss all of this. Ben last appeared on the show way back on AEWCH 45 when we talked about Rudolf Steiner and the spiritual aspects of intervals. Well... sort of. Ben's actually been on every episode for quite some time because we recreated the AEWCH theme song (originally co-composed with AEWCH guest, Jeb Havens) together. On this episode, he plays the song live and we discuss writing it together. We talk about the essential aspects of music, if there are any. And we look at the spiritual influencer culture of podcasting that has eroded its credibility over the years. At the end, Ben plays "The Mission" from the recent Six Organs of Admittance album Time Is Glass, which is, as it turns out, about me and my boyfriend.

On today's episode, I talk to musician Ben Chasny. Born in Los Angeles, Ben's family moved to rural Northern California when he was young. His recording debut was a heavy, free rock project named Plague Lounge, whose album The Wicker Image, was released conjointly between the New World of Sound and Holy Mountain labels in 1996. Holy Mountain released many of Ben's albums as Six Organs of Admittance as well, starting with his first self-titled album in 1998. Since then, he's released just about three dozen albums and EPs as Six Organs. Ben also plays in the wonderful psyche/noise rock band Comets on Fire, who have four albums on labels like Alternative Tentacles and Sub Pop, and Ben's latest album as Six Organs of Admittance, Time Is Glass, was released at the end of April on Drag City, and folks, it's fantastic! On this very special episode of the podcast we explore Chasny's youth growing up in Northern California listening to metal music, being first introduced to the guitar and his unique scholar approach to the instrument, becoming interested in more underground music such as Sun City Girls, influences from the east coast and their growing appreciation of his style of music, touring with the late Jack Rose in the early days of Six Organs of Admittance, albums such as "Asleep on the Floodplains", "Hexadic - Triology", "Burning the Threshold" and his most recent effort on Drag City entitled "Time is Glass".

Nicholas Krgovich has played in the bands p:ano, Burquitalam Plaza, Slavs, No Kids and also under his full name. This conversation was recorded on November 14th 2023. The Sugar Refinery was a vegetarian restaurant and music venue from the mid '90s to 2003 at 1115 Granville Street. It was known for fostering local music projects which were experimental, collaborative, and whimsical. It was the site of a 48 hour show by the band Beans, who played there dozens of times. Ms T's Cabaret was at 339 West Pender. The building began life as it started life in 1906 as the Myers Hall and later held the city's first purpose-built bowling alley, the Canadian Cycle and Motor Co, the Canadian Legion, the Boilermaker's Hall, and the Marine workers' Pender Auditorium.  During the 1960s the Auditorium was booked by music series, including the Afterthought, and was the site of an early Grateful Dead concert. The building was home to Vancouver's earliest drag bar, BJ's, open from 1970 to 1983, and later, the Vancouver Club Baths also opened in the basement area. After being sold, it took on a western theme as Saddle Tramps before converting to a lesbian bar, Ms. T's, which also had music shows. It was demolished after a fire in 2003. Other venues mentioned: The Royal, the Starfish Room, 1067 jazz club, Blim, The Blinding Light!, Richard's on Richards, Graceland, Luv-a-fair. YIMP fest is an annual show at Falaise park since 2021. We are presenting a new mix that will transport you into the enchanting realm of the early autumn months. This special mixtape is curated by VAST HABITAT, a recently established record label, and it showcases a curated selection of artists and music from their freshly minted catalogue, as well as tunes that have inspired and resonated with them. Vast habitat founders are Daniel Lea and Michael Deragon, aka Heliochrysum (Bedroom Community Records), which we have featured in the past. The project grew out of the artists's desire to create an environment where music, design and art can coalesce. A good demonstration of this is their crafted selection of music and a superb visual approach. The label launched with the release of two new solo albums — Lea's 'ENTHEOGEN' and Deragon's 'DAWN', and a compilation, VHS 001, which is the first in a series of engaging sonic conversations with artists working across electronic music, modern composition, and ambient. The compilation includes a remix by Heliochrysum from Pinkcourtesyphone, another of this house's favourites. For this mixtape, they share they have included things they were listening to while making their records, film scores they love, deep sound design elements, some ambient/electronic music, a few of the works from the VAST HABITAT catalogue and other works that we love listening to or moved us along the way. "As well as being an electronic-focused label, a lot of VAST HABITAT uses real instrumentation, working with amazing players like Yair Elazar Glotman, Bethan Kellough and Jamie McCarthy. So it's nice to hear the instrumentation of Six Organs of Admittance; and Michael and I are huge fans of the 'Crash' Soundtrack from David Cronenberg scored by Howard Shore, which is all guitars very Glen Branca inspired." It totally changed his life. Van recorded Astral Weeks, ranked by critics overall as the 4th greatest album of popular music history, when he was only 22 fucking years old! It is shocking the extent to which this young man was in touch with the full range of his humanity. Lester Bangs wrote: "It sounded like the man who made Astral Weeks was in terrible pain, pain most of Van Morrison's previous works had only suggested; but like the later albums by the Velvet Underground, there was a redemptive element in the blackness, ultimate compassion for the suffering of others, and a swath of pure beauty and mystical awe that cut right through the heart of the work." Veedon Fleece wouldn't be released until 1974, five albums after Astral Weeks, but now can be seen to function as Astral's spiritual sequel. The most obscenely overlooked album in Van Morrison's oeuvre, there are fascinating things happening lyrically here. Not to mention, it is the only record in which Van seems comfortable expressing and showing off the full range of the seismic instrument that is his voice. "I'm not a good enough writer to explain how magical [Veedon Fleece] is," says Ben Chasny of the freak folk/psych band Six Organs of Admittance. "You'll just have to trust me."     Do you want to see God? When the interview suggested he might be a spiritual person, Ben Chasny blanched, explaining, “I'm actually a total nihilist.”Sixteen years later, he confesses that the answer was contrarian to a fault. It's easy to arrive at the conclusion, listening to a lengthy back catalogue that finds him releasing the 20th album under the Six Organs of Admittance moniker. But he's also very much someone who refuses to be pigeon-holed, as the industry was clearly attempting to do at the time, amid the burgeoning freak folk scene. But Chasny and Six Organs continue to break new ground, drawing on a wide range of influences, from the industrial bands of his youth to the hexadic card system he developed for composing music.

This week on the show, Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance. His new album is called The Veiled Sea, out this week via Three Lobed Records. Six Organs records can often sound very different from each other—think quiet acoustic sketches or long, blown out psych epics—but this one is a whole new thing entirely, with wild glam inspired solos over wild riffs—plus there's a Faust cover. Chasny stopped by to discuss the new album, his work with Comets on Fire, his trio with Sir Richard Bishop and Chris Corsano, Rangda, the dubious “freak folk” term and much more.

Colter Wall is our Listener Recommendation today from Pete in Harpenden. Pete has introduced us to this remarkable young man's music for which we are very grateful. Colter was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. He is actually the son of the 14th Premier of Saskatchewan, Brad Wall. Whilst growing up Colter was already listening to a lot of country music including Johnny Cash. As a result of this, you can hear these influences in this track. At the age of 13 Colter began playing guitar covering songs by bands such as Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. When he was 15 years old Colter heard Bob Dylan's track Don't Think Twice, It's All Right. As a consequence of that he started writing songs as opposed to just playing guitar. He describes his music as a mix of blues, folk and Americana. In this track we play here Colter is joined by The Dead South. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4l4gdhPqh3E Jonathan Richman and The Velvet Underground Jonathan began writing his own songs in the mid-1960s and quickly became infatuated with The Velvet Underground. Consequently, Jonathan moved from Boston to New York City in 1969. He lived on the sofa of The Velvet Underground's manager Steve Sesnick and tried desperately to break into the professional music scene. Failing to do so, Jonathan moved back to Boston. It did get better for him though. I don't write really, I just make up songs. Jonathan soon formed the photo-punk band The Modern Lovers. They quickly became influential. Recording in 1972 under the tutelage of John Cale, The Modern Lovers recorded a number of demos. Out of this came the seminal Pablo Picasso and Roadrunner (a two chord homage to The Velvet's Sister Ray) which went onto to influence, among others, The Sex Pistols. Because of this Jonathan became known as The Godfather of Punk in the 1970s UK Punk Explosion. Post-breakup of the band he released the album The Modern Lovers (1976) which contained both Pablo Picasso and Roadrunner which at the time was a strange album indeed sitting in the charts where prog-rock and glam were the norm. Jonathan still performs his whimsical, wide-eyed, child-like music to this day. However, he only plays acoustically, apparently to protect his hearing.

Mere Women: Mere Women are Katrina Byrne, Amy Wilson and Flyn McKinnirery, a talented trio from Marrickville, Sydney. They’ve been kicking aorund the scene for a few years now and brought out the well received OLD LIFE in mid-2012 – a noisy, laconic adventures of post-punk with some gothic undertones thrown in for good measure. They’ve got an interesting sound and make for an excellent live group and you should definitely tune in to check out this set from their 2012 Old Life record launch in Sydney. Our good friends FBi radio were on hand to capture the set and it’s via them that we can bring it to your eardrums! Recorded and produced by FBi Radio, Sydney. Graciously shared with Live Delay. Dreamtime: Dreamtime have been kicking around Brisbane for a few years now, putting out a well received self titled LP in late 2011, and following it up with the sprawling noise of SUN in late 2012 – a great sophomore record filled with distant soundscapes, wailing guitars and percussive elements that herald an imminent storm. Counting groups like The Cosmic Dead, Six Organs of Admittance, and the Psychic Ills among their influences, Dreamtime have caught the attentions of fans near and far and were invited to play Austin Psych fest in Texas in April 2013. This recording made by Sky Kirkham for Live Delay comes from their set at 2012’s ROCK TO TRANSMIT at the Primitive Room in Spring Hill, Brisbane. Recorded and mixed by Sky Kirkham Recorded at The Primitive Room, Spring Hill. Airing details: First aired via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 14 June 2013. Show production and engineering: Darragh Murray. Kudos: FBi Radio Sydney, Sky Kirkham.

The Toadcast - the weekly podcast from Song, by Toad

This podcast was recorded - not a word of a lie - on a deserted mountaintop in Corsica in the shadow of a ruined castle.  Not an especially enormous ruined castle, I'll grant you, but the shadow of a ruined castle nevertheless.  I will try and show you this as clearly as possible when I choose the picture for the mp3 tag and all that stuff, but I honestly doubt it will be all that easy.  Vast panoramas of rocky mountains don't really come across all that well in photos, particularly when the only device you have with you with which to take them is an iPhone.Anyhow, having recorded this, the challenge is going to be to find somewhere to upload the fucker.  Bank machines and shops which let you pay by card are pretty scarce commodities in the interior of the island, never mind a decent internet connection. 01. These are songs that conjure up images of wind blown landscapes, tumbleweeds, sunbleached rocks, dusty roads and heat waves rising off the ground. Of course most of the music in this mix has an ambient/atmospheric feel. I remember the first time I heard Daniel Lanois' use of slide guitar on "Apollo - Atmospheres & Soundtracks", I hated it. I guess I thought of the slide guitar as too close to "country music" which I definitely hated. Well over the years I've come around on the slide guitar, I love it now. I'm still not a big country music fan, though I do have a ton of Johnny Cash recordings. I've come to appreciate the lonely, melancholy feel that can be expressed through twangy, dusty western music. Of course the ultimate in great ambient twang is Ry Cooder's "Paris, TX" soundtrack. That makes an appearance in this mix along with standbys like Lanois, Steve Roach & A Small Good Thing. I was happy to sneak in a piano tune, "Alice & twins" by Japancakes. It just sort of fit with the overall feel & then the slide guitar comes in to make it even more "dusty". Whether it's the twang of an acoustic guitar, the wail of a harmonica or the ethereal sound of a slide guitar, this mix will drop you off on an abandoned rail line in the middle of nowhere. This summer Ana and I, in preparation for the "great long distance experiment" got to travel a bit around Maine and Canada and Vermont. On one occasion I had a prolonged discussion with a good man, here to be nameless to protect his reputation, about we humans and the big picture and what can be done about it all. It was a real and good pleasure and I hope I hadn't offended him as I usually do when I talk about these things. Anyways - one last thing. I had mistaken Andrew Bird for Bobby Bare Jr. This is because Mr. Bare has a song which is close to my dyslexic heart called "Strange Bird" hence if I have a few in me I start mixing things up in a poor way; like saying that Andrew Bird has a senior version in the country and western scene. That is clearly not the case. Be sure to check out "Strange Bird" it's really good. Anyways this is the short version which made the podcast: 01. Richard Hawley - As the Dawn Breaks 02. Playing With the Past is an annual (we hope) event at the Edinburgh Film Festival where contemporary bands are invited to write new soundtracks for old films.  Last year was the first of these, when the superb British Sea Power wrote a brilliant score for Man of Aran, a (slightly fake) documentary about the lives of the inhabitants of a remote island off the West Coast of Ireland (extract here). This was such a success that the band have been performing it all over the place ever since.  This year David Drummond, who put the event together, decided to invite three different bands to work with roughly half an hour or so of footage each, and he started off by inviting eagleowl, who suggested a number of other bands, from which David chose FOUND and Meursault. We decided not to include more than a few excerpts of the music in this because the bands were a little uncomfortable about listening to too much of their stuff in the absence of the film to which it belongs.  So a big thank you to Tommy, Bart and Neil for coming in to talk about their music, and to David and Theresa from the Filmhouse who came by to chip in at the beginning, before having to rush off.  It may not be the catchiest of podcasts in a musical sense this week, but I think this is easily one of the best podcasts we've done - one of the most interesting, certainly. Also, although I haven't tracked down all these films on the internet, I have got some bits and pieces for you to give you an idea of what was going on.  Confusingly, they all have the original scores on these clips, but erm... well, hopefully you'll find them instructive. The Films: 1. eagleowl: Granton Trawler 2. eagleowl: Begone Dull Care 3. Meursault: Stan & Ollie 4. Meursault: Night Mail (Part 1, Part 2 & Part 3) 5. FOUND: Camera Makes Whoopee (Sorry, couldn't find this one anywhere - here's a Google search though if you want to have a go yourself. And a bit more about Norman McLaren, here.) I am starting to repeat myself. I've done two piano mixes, two string theory mixes, two winter mixes and now a second guitar mix. I decided to do a new guitar mix because I seem to have come across a lot of good guitar music lately. All the tracks on this mix are new, from either 2006 or 2007. The music ranges from electric to acoustic. Originally I intended to do a feedback-filled guitarscape like a long Peter Wright song. But in the end the music in this mix is fairly straight forward. Some is ambient, some is pretty, some is droney(is that a word?). I hope you enjoy it.
