Send us a textIn the season 7 finale, Leandra and Elyse are joined by Fio Gede Parma to discuss their book 'The Witch Belongs to the World', and its major themes: what does it really mean to be a witch? We talk about what initiation really is, the pros and cons of following a particular lineage, and the ins and outs of Fio's tradition, the Wildwood Tradition from so-called Australia.Fio Gede Parma (they/she) is a Balinese-Australian international teacher, magical mentor, and award-winning author. They were born in the island of Bali - to Roslyn and John - and descend from Balinese, Chinese, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, and English peoples. Fio has lived in so-called Australia for most of her life, as north as Thul Garrie Waja/Gurrumbilbarra (Townsville) and as south as Naarm (Melbourne).Fio was raised in an animistic, polytheistic, magic-affirming, spirit-knowing family - in a haunted house - whose traditions were largely impacted by what the west calls Balinese Hinduism. When forced to consider it, some Balinese name their ‘religion' Agama Tirta, Religion of the Holy Water. Ganesha, Siwa (Shiva), Krishna, Parwati Uma, Durga, Hanuman, the Barong and Rangda, the spirits and the ancestors were all spoken of, venerated, and regarded with holy awe. Fio Gede Parma discusses their book The Witch Belongs to the World: A Spell of Becoming.Fio Gede Parma - fee-oh g-deh par-mah - (they/she) is a Balinese-Australian international teacher, magical mentor, and award-winning author. They were born in the island of Bali - to Roslyn and John - and descend from Balinese, Chinese, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, and English peoples. Fio has lived in so-called Australia for most of her life, as north as Thul Garrie Waja/Gurrumbilbarra (Townsville) and as south as Naarm (Melbourne).Fio awoke as Witch at the age of 11, their numerological life path number (11/2). They dedicated themself to the Craft with a ritual from a book at age 12. Since that time Fio has been involved and initiated in the mysteries of four witch traditions: Wildwood, Anderean, Reclaiming, and Anderson Feri. Fio's magical mentors and teachers have been many, but there are a treasured handful, some among the Mighty Dead now, who have deeply inspired their work in the worlds. Their main teachers have always been the Gods, Spirits, the Witch Houses and Communities themselves, but special acknowledgement goes to Fio's parents, James A., Jarrah, Molly, Jane Meredith, Lee Morgan, Bex, Ravyn Stanfield, Raven Edgewalker, Dawn Isidora, Abel, Gwydion, Cholla - and Ni Wayan Juiti (Fio's father's mother), Felix, and Rose May Dance (1948 - 2021) of the Mighty Dead. The witchcraft and magic of these mystics, healers, spirit-workers, and priestexes deeply touch Fio's life.Fio was raised in an animistic, polytheistic, magic-affirming, spirit-knowing family - in a haunted house - whose traditions were largely impacted by what the west calls Balinese Hinduism. The skills of divination, seership, mediumship, trance possession, spirit-flight, and sorcery are practised in Fio's father's family.Fio started writing about the Craft at an early age and felt a fateful and undeniable vocation to not only immerse in the Craft but to teach witchcraft in the world and help mentor spirit-workers. They have been teaching both privately in covens and publicly at gatherings, festivals, workshops, and intensives since 2007. Fio stepped fully into their profession as a diviner, seer, community priestex and facilitator, working witch, mentor, writer, and teacher in January, 2010. This has been their whole job since that time.Their first book - Spirited: Taking Paganism Beyond the Circle was published by Llewellyn in 2009, and won the COVR award for best Wicca/Pagan book of that year; 2023 release The Witch Belongs to the World: A Spell of Becoming (Llewellyn) is a love-song to witches.https://www.fiogedeparma.com/This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3589860/advertisement
Captain Teruk sees Jimmy watching a scuffle between two monkeys intently. When Jimmy tells Teruk that he is finding this friendly fight between the two monkeys cute, Captain Teruk warns him that simple competitions between monkeys can be terribly dangerous. One such contest had almost overturned the throne of Bali. Captain Teruk now proceeds to narrate the tale of the legendary enmity between Barong and Rangda, and how a contest between two monkeys led to an epic clash between them, the repercussions of which nearly toppled the throne of Bali. This week on the show, Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance. His new album is called The Veiled Sea, out this week via Three Lobed Records. Six Organs records can often sound very different from each other—think quiet acoustic sketches or long, blown out psych epics—but this one is a whole new thing entirely, with wild glam inspired solos over wild riffs—plus there's a Faust cover. Chasny stopped by to discuss the new album, his work with Comets on Fire, his trio with Sir Richard Bishop and Chris Corsano, Rangda, the dubious “freak folk” term and much more.

Rangda is electrifying, dangerous and otherworldly. She embodies power. She has protruding eyes, pendulous large breasts and a large red tongue hanging down her body. Her mouth is full of big teeth and curving fangs, her fingernails are extended to long pointed claws and her unkempt mop of gray hair hangs down her back. Legends of Rangda include her fondness for eating children as well as causing disease and pestilence. My guest this episode is one of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet: Brandon Spars. He is not only a talented and hilarious storyteller, but he is jolly clever too! A high school and college teacher, he is the author of four books with another on the way. He is a five-time Moth StorySlam winner and two-time Moth GrandSlam winner, plus a TEDx speaker. Brandon shares a funny fact about himself that makes his dog tilt his head in confusion. He spent a few years living in Indonesia and the Marshall Islands and shares a funny story about a giant who terrorized the islands. We talk about The Moth and Brandon shares an inspiring tidbit from when he met the founder, George Dawes Green. He also talks about the moments of magic when hearing a traditional tale prompts a deep personal connection. We discuss his new book about controversial Balinese Goddess, Rangda, with beautiful illustrations by his daughter, Clara. Finally, Brandon gives a master class in how to tell a hilarious and yet moving story, highlighting deeper issues of the commonalities between panic disorders and trance, called A Method to my Madness. A dream guest.

In the previous four lectures, we considered witch-hunting in various contexts. Now we need to analyze what is going on in these cases. The basic idea is that “society creates the image of the witch, and pins this image down onto particular individuals” (Mayer 1982, p. 61). So what is this image and how can understand it? The image is the nightmare witch who “epitomizes all kinds of evils”. We consider this in relation to the Balinese nightmare witch—Rangda.
