ANDREW-MARK THOMPSON on the voices behind the puppets.First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on March 16th 2025.This week we welcome back our old friend ANDREW-MARK THOMPSON who's making a much-postponed return to VISION ON SOUND. ANDY is the one of our regular contributors to the show who I feel is our expert on all things to do with the GERRY ANDERSON productions of which he is an enormous fan, so, when DAVID GRAHAM, the much loved actor responsible for giving us the voices of PARKER and BRAINS in THUNDERBIRDS - as well as a whole host of other brilliant performances - died in September last year at the grand old age of ninety-nine, we had planned to get together and record a show in his honour, but various gremlins got into the works, so it never happened.Instead we attempted to regroup in January and broaden our scope into a discussion about the many actors who performed in series such as FOUR FEATHER FALLS, FIREBALL XL5, THUNDERBIRDS, CAPTAIN SCARLET and, most particularly STINGRAY, so that's what we attempted to do during the next hour, as we discuss, amongst others, the work of names such as RAY BARRETT, SHANE RIMMER, LOIS MAXWELL, and, of course the wonderful DAVID GRAHAM. You may not have known some of their faces, but their voices shaped a generation. Now, obviously, those gremlins really don't appreciate a tryer, and, despite our persistence, there were still some sound issues during this recording, for which I can only apologise, and which all seems somewhat ironic, given that we were simply trying to talk about voice performers, and the great joy they brought to people over the years.Anyway, because we had such an enjoyable hour, I've done my best to salvage what I could, and I hope that you'll find this fun conversation worth sticking with despite any of the slight sound issues that there may still be.PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.
Captain Black reveals that, using Mysteron technology, that he now has control over all the digital systems on Earth and can destroy them at will. The Mysterons then speak through the rogue agent, demanding mankind's surrender in twenty-four hours or else they will trigger a world-wide technological failure that will destroy everyone on the planet. With humanity's surrender as the price, how can Spectrum carry on the fight with weapons that do not work?

In a remote diner in Phoenix, Arizona, Spectrum flight engineer Xander Story makes contact with two Mysteron agents. Story agrees to destroy Spectrum's Skybase in return for the aliens' promise that they will halt their war on mankind – he accepts a fusion bomb in a briefcase and also a large payment. Captain Scarlet gatecrashes the meeting but is shot and killed. Knowing that his body will regenerate, the Mysterons try to engineer Scarlet's total destruction in a massive explosion. Captain Blue finds his devastated corpse and takes it to Skybase. Doctor Gold finds that Scarlet's injuries are too severe, and with no sign of the retrometabolisation process taking place, he pronounces the agent dead. While Destiny and Blue grieve for their lost friend, Story plants the bomb on Skybase, set to an hour's delay. In sickbay, Scarlet regains consciousness, only to find that no one can see or hear him, and that he has somehow become intangible, yet somehow he must warn Destiny and Blue about the bomb.

No longer under the Mysterons' control, but retaining their power of "retro-metabolism", Captain Scarlet joins Spectrum's operation to protect the aliens' next target – the Director General of the United Asian Republic.
Three weeks after losing contact with Elysium Base on Mars, a team consisting of Captains Scarlet and Blue, Destiny and Harmony Angels, and Doctor Gold are sent to find out what happened to the crew. On arrival, they realise it is a Mysteron trap and that they are under attack from an titanium armour-plated research robot named Remote Acquisition Technology (RAT) which carries lasers and a diamond-tipped saw. Under Mysteron control, the RAT has become the ultimate killing machine.
With our latest look at Captain Scarlet, we may have discovered the most inept of Mysteron agents, Neilson.
Threatening to destroy the "Place of the Angels", the Mysterons engineer the theft of a lethal virus from a research centre.

With the Dads decimated by a combination of birthdays, studying and paddle board salesman conventions it's left to Peter and Sidey to bring us the epic conclusion to the strong Puppet theme which has taken over this week's show. Starting with the Top 5 Puppets, naturally, the guys are on hand to discuss some rarely featured films and tv. Listen in, or don't, there's no strings attached and it's all very heart felt. Sorry. All you have to do to emotionally reconcile with your son is saw your own arm off in Jodie Foster's THE BEAVER (2011) which asks its viewer to suspend disbelief for a number of wild ideas, including that it would be possible to move an enormous mural from a downtown city wall to a bedroom without ripping it or damaging it any way, either during the removal or reapplication of the painting process. Mel Gibson plays Walter Black, once a devoted husband, loving father and successful businessman whose suicide is unfortunately interrupted by a hand puppet he found discarded in a dumpster. Allowing The Beaver (Mel Gibson) to talk for him, Walter begins to reintegrate back into his life, with the furry glove enriching the people around him in various nonsensical ways dictated by a screenplay so mechanically obvious that Mel hits rock bottom at exactly two-thirds the running time. Anton Yelchin and Jennifer Lawrence are fine actors stuck in a chemistry-less dead brother romance sub-plot which has the pair arrested seconds after graffitiing a wall late at night only for Lawrence to then presumably return in broad daylight and complete her design without any interference and also has nothing whatsoever to do thematically with the main story. Foster's acting performance is probably fine in a thin role as Walter's wife which requires her to instantly accept the premise (good job someone did) but also have a threesome with the hairy, wild-eyed wood-eater and the Beaver. Pedestrian direction, an uneven tone and an almost completely humourless approach all contrive to make this uninteresting to watch even if you're tempted to, because despite Gibson mining his own pain, this is little more than a cynical public image rescue exercise designed to garner sympathy. Give this one a miss folks. To the legions of CAPTAIN SCARLETT AND THE MYSTERONS fans now flocking to the podcast in eager anticipation of their favourite show finally getting the Bad Dads treatment, I can only apologise because just as with LAWRENCE OF ARABIA I didn't watch this one and so can't fairly comment on the first ever episode of this classic Super Mario Bros Animation thing. I have only dim memories of this, a darker THUNDERBIRDS, and scale model wars with the mysterious Mysterons. Hey do you think that's where they get their name? From being mysterious? This was probably amazing, let's say that.We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Try us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Until next time, we remain... Bad Dads

Neil Poulton salutes the design prowess of Century 21 Productions' Derek Meddings and Mike Trim. It was their work on Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet that would inspire him to go into graphic design, where he was recognized by Time Magazine as one of the 100 people and ideas influencing modern design. His iconic rugged hard drive concept was a favourite of Gerry Anderson himself and was inspired by the Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle! 01:07 Welcome to the Monopolized Gerry Anderson Podcast! 03:25 FAB Gate Facts 8:22 Podsterons Submit Ideas! 14:05 The Gerry Anderson News!
