Sports cars comprise around 1% of new car sales these days, sadly. We discuss, and Steve-0 and our trauma surgeon Dr Stephan Moran pick our five favorite sports cars of all time.Trauma surgeon safety segment: For many years, Dr Moran has been advocating for better crash dummies ("They should have 20 different size and gender dummies lined up, and the tester can pick any one and put it into a car and run the test", is what he's been saying). Chinese manufacturer Geely has built a safety testing facility that can test 60 crash dummies, so finally someone out there has been paying attention and making cars safer through better crash testing. Dr Moran discusses.Stephan spots an insane Honda Accord. Us old guys think it's Fugly, but presumably "da kids" love it.Steve-0 gets into 2025 new car sales data and draws some conclusions: big pickups rule, compact crossovers and big SUVs are selling like crazy, BEVs are fading fast, and BMW is dominating the luxury market (with Lexus close behind).#carsoncallpodcast #automobile #traumasurgeonsafety #sportscar #bmw #lexus

In Episode 235, Tu and Lei break down a pivotal week for autonomous driving, global EV competition, and the future of premium automakers—from Silicon Valley to China and Europe. The conversation opens with a surge of AV and robotaxi news: Tesla removing safety drivers in Austin, shifting FSD to a subscription model, and signaling potential approval in China and Europe; Waymo expanding into Miami; DiDi launching a new robotaxi platform in China; and large-scale robo-van ambitions from Mobileye–Volkswagen and Geely's Caocao Mobility. Together, these moves signal that autonomy is no longer experimental—it's scaling.Tu frames autonomy through four lenses: technology readiness, silicon and cloud stacks, regulatory approval, and societal impact, including job displacement and cost reduction through scale. While Tesla remains the benchmark, Chinese players like XPeng, Huawei, and Baidu are rapidly closing the gap—supported by a more permissive regulatory environment in China. The episode then pivots to a blunt assessment of the premium auto sector. Porsche's collapse to ~42,000 units in China, deep price cuts from BMW and Mercedes, and the stark comparison between Porsche's Macan EV and Xiaomi's YU7 highlight how “premium” is being redefined by software, features, and price—not heritage.Tu and Lei argue that the high-margin glory days for German luxury brands are over, not just in China but globally, as Chinese OEMs demonstrate faster iteration, lower costs, and mass-market appeal—especially to younger and female buyers. The discussion closes with battery swapping (BAAS), cold-weather EV realities, and whether Chinese automakers could realistically build trust and scale in North America.Strategic, candid, and forward-looking, this episode explains why autonomy and affordability—not badges—will define the next era of the auto industry.___
This week on Autonomy Markets, Grayson Brulte and Walter Piecyk discuss Tesla officially removing safety attendants from Robotaxis in Austin, Waymo's commercial launch in Miami, and Serve Robotics' strategic acquisition of Diligent Robotics. It finally happened. Tesla has removed safety attendants from a select group of vehicles in Austin. While this initial fleet is limited and operating in a specific geofence and utilizing chase cars, Grayson and Walt view this as a critical validation of the technology. Looking ahead, Grayson predicts the operational domain will expand significantly in Austin over the next 60 days, with the Phoenix metro region slated as the next target market for deployment. As Tesla went safety attendant-out, Waymoopened the Miami market for limited commercial service within a 60-square-mile area, with one major caveat, no Miami Beach. On the Foreign Autonomy Desk, Grayson and Walt discuss Geely's plan to deploy 100,000 methanol-powered robotaxis in China and the South Korean government's selection of Gwangju as the nation's first dedicated autonomous vehicle testing zone.Episode Chapters0:00 Tesla Removes Safety Attendant in Austin 9:19 Operational Efficiency 10:33 Alex Roy Goes Coast-to-Coast with Zero FSD Interventions 14:15 Drive on FSD, Get a Discount 18:25 FSD is Expanding as Prices are Increasing 23:31 New Robotaxi Markets 24:53 Waymo Launches Miami Markets28:33 Vandalizing Waymo's32:20 Serve Robotics Acquires Diligent Robotics36:41 Foreign Autonomy Desk 39:21 Next WeekRecorded on Friday, January 23, 2026 --------About The Road to AutonomyThe Road to Autonomy provides market intelligence and strategic advisory services to institutional investors and companies, delivering insights needed to stay ahead of emerging trends in the autonomy economy™. Episode 234 may go down as one of the most consequential conversations yet on China EVs & More. Tu and Lei unpack the Canada–China trade truce that effectively opens the door for Chinese EV imports into North America—and why this moment could trigger a chain reaction across the U.S., Mexico, and global auto markets. Canada's decision to allow up to 49,000 Chinese EVs at just 6.1% tariffs isn't about volume—it's about symbolism. Once the door opens, it rarely closes. The hosts explain why this move pressures the U.S. ahead of USMCA renegotiations, accelerates conversations around Chinese manufacturing in Canada, and raises the stakes for GM, Ford, and the German luxury brands already losing ground in China. The episode also breaks down 2025 China auto and NEV sales, showing a maturing but brutally competitive market where growth now comes from stealing share, not market expansion. With BYD, Geely, Chery, Leapmotor, and Huawei-backed brands targeting aggressive 2026 volumes, the pressure on legacy OEMs—especially BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and Porsche—has never been higher.Tu and Lei debate which Chinese OEMs are best positioned for Canada and eventually the U.S., why affordable EVs in the $30–40K range are the real battleground, and how price cuts of 10–25% by German brands reveal structural inefficiencies long masked by premium margins.Strategic, provocative, and deeply grounded in real data, this episode explains why North America just entered a new phase of the China EV story—and why the next 12–18 months may redefine the global auto industry.___

Jill is back in the co-host seat this week for a topic-packed episode. Tom opens the show asking if $61,000 seems like a lot for a Hyundai—any Hyundai. The hosts discuss the Korean maker's luxury/value equation, and note that Tom's test car, a 2026 Palisade Calligraphy Hybrid is, without question, a luxury vehicle. Listen in for more of the conversation. Tom goes on to share his frustration with Stellantis for killing all of Jeep's “4Xe” plug-in hybrids, along with the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. Listen in for some crankiness. Still in the first segment, Jill details her CES Chinese-car adventure. Jill was able to take short drives in a number of luxury electric Zeekr models (a division of Volvo's parent company Geely) and came away very impressed. Her quick takes on these vehicles are worth a listen. Are these premium EVs coming to the U.S? here's the scoop. In the second segment, Jill and Tom are joined by friend of show and sustainability expert Robert Collangelo. Robert addresses the fallacy that EVs are a threat to the U.S. electric grid, and details the real power-consumption challenges that lay ahead for the country. It's a great conversation you don't want to miss. In the last segment Jill is subjected to Tom's “Is it a Dodge?” quiz.

Kicking off 2026, Tu and Lei return from CES in Las Vegas with firsthand insights into how the global auto industry's center of gravity continues to shift toward China, AI, autonomy, and robotics. This episode unpacks why CES is no longer about cars, but about who controls the software, silicon, sensors, and robots that will define the next decade of mobility. From Geely and Great Wall's growing U.S. ambitions, to Hyundai's robot-only keynote, to Ford's quiet but meaningful autonomy reset, the hosts connect dots that most headlines missed.Tu and Lei also break down the Geely “coming to the U.S.” scoop, Rivian-style AI days spreading to legacy OEMs, and why Western automakers are increasingly borrowing from China's playbook—from ADAS and silicon strategy to embodied AI and robotics. The episode closes with a deep dive into autonomy's three tracks (L2++, consumer L3/L4, and robotaxis), the growing importance of LiDAR scale, and why Donut Labs' solid-state battery and in-wheel motor reveal could become a true industry disruptor—if it scales.Fast, candid, and packed with on-the-ground context, this episode explains why CES 2026 marked a turning point—and why the race is no longer just EVs vs ICE, but ecosystems vs incumbents.___
On today's Turn Down For Watt Podcast, we dive into the controversy surrounding the Donut Labs battery and ask the big question everyone is debating: Is it truly solid-state, or is it overhyped marketing bordering on a scam? We break down what solid-state really means, how it compares to current lithium-ion tech from CATL, BYD, and Tesla, and why battery terminology matters more than ever.We also unpack Ford's announcement that autonomy will arrive with its affordable universal EV platform in 2027, while examining the very real struggles Ford and the broader industry have faced with EV profitability. GM isn't alone in this pain, reporting a $1.7 billion EV loss last quarter and announcing another $6 billion write-off, while Jeep quietly canceled two plug-in models. At CES, one of the most under-the-radar stories came from Geely, the parent company of Zeekr, Volvo, Polestar, and Lynk & Co. With models like the Zeekr Z, 001, and 7X, plus their “Golden Brick” ultra-fast charging battery, we explore what it would mean if Zeekr begins U.S. production in South Carolina within 24–36 months—and how far behind U.S. automakers may be if current pullbacks continue.

Tu and Lei close out 2025 with a sweeping, on-the-ground review of the most consequential year yet for China's EV, AV, and mobility ecosystem — and why its ripple effects are now impossible for the rest of the world to ignore. From CES to Shanghai, Munich, and New York, the hosts reflect on firsthand experiences that defined the year: China's EV export surge, the maturation of robotaxis, the cooling of the domestic price war, and the emergence of clear winners — and vulnerabilities — among Chinese and global automakers. They break down why BYD became a true global volume force, how XPeng, Geely, and Zeekr gained momentum, why NIO's long game is finally paying off, and what the rise of autonomous mobility outside China (Waymo, Baidu, WeRide, Pony.ai) means heading into 2026.The episode also revisits major inflection points: • Chinese EV exports flooding Europe, Latin America, Russia, and the UK • The beginning of an exported price war • Robotaxis moving from pilots to real commercial expansion • Why average vehicle prices topping $50,000 in the U.S. is unsustainable • How geopolitics, tariffs, and supply chains reshaped strategy • Why 2026 could be the year autonomy truly breaks throughCandid, data-driven, and reflective — this episode connects the dots on how 2025 reshaped the global auto industry and sets the stage for what comes next.⸻
In Episode 229, Tu and Lei unpack the November China EV sales inflection point and what it reveals about the next phase of the global auto industry. With subsidies set to expire in 2026, November marked the real start of China's year-end “mad dash.” The numbers show a clear split: Xiaomi, XPeng, Leapmotor, Geely, and NIO accelerating, while BYD and Li Auto lose momentum and Tesla slips into negative growth territory in China. The hosts explain why Xiaomi's YU7 and SU7 have proven unusually resilient, how XPeng's AI-first strategy is paying off, and why Leapmotor and Geely are now knocking on the million-unit club—a threshold that even legacy premium brands have failed to reach in China. They also tackle the bigger strategic question facing Western automakers: Is it still worth competing in China? Tu and Lei argue that China remains irreplaceable as the world's largest single passenger-vehicle market—and that exporting from China, leveraging local tech partners, and embracing “China-for-China” design is no longer optional. The episode closes with a deep discussion on embodied AI, smart glasses, silicon strategy, and why companies like Xiaomi, XPeng, and Li Auto are no longer just carmakers—but ecosystem builders trying to define the future of mobility.Insightful, data-driven, and grounded in real market dynamics, this episode explains why 2026 may be the most decisive year yet for both Chinese EV leaders and global legacy automakers.___

NIO announced battery swap partnerships with 8 major automakers between November 2023 and September 2024: Changan, Geely, Chery, JAC, Lotus, GAC, FAW, and Jiyue. William Li compared it to Amazon Web Services, promising to build the world's largest battery swap ecosystem with unified standards and shared infrastructure. But as of November 2025, production vehicles from the battery swap alliance have been significantly delayed. Chery's Exeed models were expected in Q3 2025 and haven't arrived yet, though testing has been confirmed at NIO swap stations. Meanwhile, CATL announced their Choco-Swap ecosystem with nearly 100 partners and aggressive expansion goals: 1,000 stations by end of 2025, 10,000 mid-term, and 30,000 stations long-term. NIO currently operates 3,562 stations after building since 2018.In March 2025, NIO and CATL signed a strategic partnership where CATL would invest up to 2.5 billion yuan in NIO Power and integrate Choco-Swap technology into future Firefly models. But in April 2025, Reuters reported CATL was in talks to acquire a controlling stake in NIO Power, valued at over 10 billion yuan. William Li denied the rumors in a WeChat group, but NIO's official statement only confirmed they're working with multiple investors including CATL.Then in November 2025, William Li said Firefly will NOT integrate with CATL's battery swap network, contradicting the March partnership announcement. Li explained that CATL uses air-cooled battery packs targeting ride-hailing markets, while Firefly uses liquid-cooled packs for better safety and temperature performance. This episode breaks down what's causing the battery swap alliance delays, why automakers haven't launched compatible vehicles on schedule, and whether CATL is positioning to dominate battery swapping alongside or in competition with NIO. We cover the standardization challenges, the BaaS pricing dilemmas, the stratification of cooperation levels between alliance members, and CATL's open platform approach that's attracting more partners.GAC Aion just launched the first mainstream passenger car using CATL's Choco-Swap technology in November 2025. CATL plans to expand internationally to Europe, directly competing with NIO in overseas markets. With CATL controlling 44.3% of China's battery market share and having deeper capital resources, this analysis explores whether the partnership could evolve into competition. For NIO bulls and EV investors, this is the objective analysis of where the battery swap alliance stands today, what the delays mean, and how CATL's parallel ecosystem changes the competitive landscape.

This week on China EVs & More, Tu and Lei unpack a scary set of Q3 results for global automakers. Porsche's operating profit nearly vanishes, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen Group struggle, and BYD reports its first major profit decline in years. Meanwhile, Li Auto faces a costly Mega recall after a battery-coolant fire, raising new questions about safety and supply-chain quality.Tu shares insights from the Reuters Automotive Summit, including what executives from Rivian, Lucid, and Mercedes-Benz USA had to say about current challenging environment — plus takeaways from Ganesh Iyer of NIO USA. The hosts also discuss how Chinese tech players like Xiaomi and Geely are resetting global expectations, why CATL's battery dominance will continue for the next decade, and what the West must learn from China's hyper-competitive EV market.Chapters02:16 Halloween Reflections and Market Concerns05:04 Li Auto's Recall and Safety Issues08:00 Financial Performance of Major Automakers11:03 Competitive Landscape in the EV Market13:49 Restructuring of German Automakers16:46 Insights from the Reuters Conference19:59 Level 4 Autonomy and Future Trends30:03 The Evolution of Autonomy34:50 Mapping the Future of Autonomous Vehicles39:51 Marketing Strategies in a Multicultural Landscape44:31 Consumer Data Privacy and Trust54:08 The Future of Battery Technology_____Stay tuned for sharp analysis on involution, layoffs at GM, brand marketing shifts, and how the next generation of EVs from Mercedes, Hyundai, and NIO will shape 2026.Companies & Topics Discussed:BYD | Li Auto | CATL | Porsche | Mercedes-Benz | Volkswagen Group | Audi | BMW Group | Beijing Hyundai | NIO | Xiaomi | Geely | Luxeed | DJI | Momenta | FinDreams | Rivian | Lucid | Stellantis | Uber | Nvidia | GM | Honda | Apple | AESC | Gotion | Calb
CAPÍTULO 6: GREAT WALL MOTOR, EL ESPECIALISTA EN SUVs.

Europe led growth, North America hit a record as buyers rushed to secure tax credits, and China saw robust, if moderating, expansion, while BYD cut its sales target but expects significant overseas volume. FORD'S FOCUS-SIZED RECOVERY PLAN Ford will launch a new mid-sized crossover in 2027, built in Valencia, Spain, reflecting a shift toward affordable EVs following Fiesta and Focus factory closures. The model will compete directly with the likes of Tiguan and Sportage at a mid-£30,000 price point—aiming to recover relevance with lower emissions and competitive pricing without expecting past market share highs. EUROPEAN AUTOMAKERS SEEK 2035 FLEXIBILITY European automotive leaders are calling for flexibility in the EU's 2035 ban on petrol and diesel cars, citing tougher global supply chains and increased reliance on Chinese battery suppliers. Automakers advocate for hybrids and transitional support beyond 2035, while member states like Italy and France push for exceptions, highlighting the division over the full fossil fuel phase-out deadline. TOYOTA BUILDS EV SUVS IN KENTUCKY Toyota will begin producing its first electric vehicles in the U.S. next year, including two three-row SUVs at its Georgetown, Kentucky site, part of a $1.3 billion investment focused on domestic EV growth. The move aims to serve rising American demand, add jobs, and advance Toyota toward carbon neutrality by 2050, while balancing hybrids, plug-ins, and full EVs. STELLANTIS CANCELS ELECTRIC RAM 1500 REV Ram has scrapped its planned all-electric 1500 REV pickup in favor of a plug-in hybrid model, citing weak demand for battery-only trucks and financial constraints at Stellantis. The new Ram REV, featuring a gasoline generator with over 690 miles of range, appeals to users needing greater towing and long-distance capability, while Stellantis refocuses on hybrids and profitable platforms. NISSAN MICRA LIVE EVENT SHOWCASES NEW SUPERMINI EV Nissan unveiled its fully electric sixth-generation MICRA in Rotterdam, built on the dedicated AmpR platform, offering two battery sizes, 198–260 miles WLTP range, and advanced handling and tech features. Starting at £21,495 in the UK with government support, deliveries begin January 2026 as MICRA leads Nissan's European EV lineup expansion. GM REAFFIRMS EV-ONLY FUTURE, SLOWS TRANSITION GM CEO Mary Barra reaffirmed the company's long-term goal of going all-electric by 2035, positioning it as a strategic "North Star". However, she acknowledged that the full transition may take decades due to industry complexity and evolving market and regulatory challenges.
