Earlier this week, the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) released its second annual breakdown of gender pay gaps in large Australian businesses. Here, Lawyers Weekly dives into the law firm data and what it says about where the profession is at in tackling salary inequity. In this episode of The Lawyers Weekly Show, host Jerome Doraisamy speaks with Lawyers Weekly senior reporter Naomi Neilson to discuss the brand's coverage of the WGEA data release, the key takeaways pertaining to BigLaw firms in Australia, the broad differences in performance between firms, and how the legal profession is faring relative to other sectors. Doraisamy and Neilson also discuss flaws in the WGEA methodology as it pertains to the inclusion of partnership salaries, how individual practitioners can and may interpret the latest data, why the profession must remember that achieving pay parity is a long-term project, overcoming self- and societal stigmas, and why Lawyers Weekly will be keeping a close eye on future senior appointments in firms, and how those firms respond to the global pushback against diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. We've read fake-dating stories before but this one is between two best friends. Here we meet Laniah, a small-business owner who craves privacy and being homebound, and her BFF, Isaac, who is a sensational influencer and artist, living his best life in the limelight. When Laniah's small-business, co-owned with her mother, begins to struggle and is close to shutting down, Isaac springs an idea that he knows would guarantee a turn-around for her business - telling the internet that they are dating. Though Laniah is worried that this would wreck their life-long friendship, she rolls with it. And even though they both start falling for each other (in a non-bff way), Laniah has a tough time accepting how she feels and is worried that her health and their relationship will be ruined if they both accept that they are in love with each other. Join us to see where they end up - or read this book with us! ***We would love and appreciate it if you could subscribe, rate & review! Tami Neilson and Dr Jada Watson: Country musician and musicology professor on the gender inequality in country music and 'The F Word'

Classic female country artists like Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, and Faith Hill, along with modern-day musicians like Kasey Musgraves, Carrie Underwood, and Shania Twain are pioneers of the genre. Despite their influence and hand in elevating country music to the heights it's reached in the modern era, only 10% of country music airplay and awards are granted to women. This is one of the astonishing facts in Tami Neilson's latest show ‘The F Word', which combines music with the research of musicology professor Dr Jada Watson. The two first met on Twitter, both very vocal about challenging inequality in the country music industry. “I followed her because she wrote, you know, these incredible articles," Neilson told Francesca Rudkin. “What I loved about her work was that for an artist, she was kind of giving us the tools to feel validated I guess, you know, vindicated.” Neilson says she wanted to tell the story of women in country music through song, backing it with the black and white statistics of Watson's research. Despite country being one of the largest genres of music in the United States, women are disproportionally represented, an issue Watson says has historic roots. “We have to remember where country came from and the time in which it was developed, and this was 1920's United States, racially segregated country.” “Most cultural institutions were racially segregated and then sort of built into that framework was also different forms of discrimination or oppression,” she said. One of the stories they tell in ‘The F Word' is that of the Carter Family – one of the founding families of the country music genre. Watson says that in the recording sessions including people like Jimmie Rodgers, the Carters said that a woman in the lead would never sell. “We think of them as the founding family of country music,” Watson told Rudkin. “And so that idea of women not selling, or not being possible to sell has really been baked into the fabric of the institution that is country music.” The ‘F Word' will be performed on Saturday, March 8th at Auckland Town Hall. Send us a textOn this episode of the CMAJ Podcast, Dr. Kirsten Patrick speaks with Dr. Shane Neilson, the author of a CMAJ Encounters article entitled, “Professional stigmatizations.” Dr. Neilson is a physician, writer, and academic, who shares his experiences navigating medical school and practice as a neurodiverse physician with bipolar disorder and autism. Dr. Neilson reflects on the challenges he faced during medical school, including a moment when a preceptor told him, "There's something wrong with you," without offering any support or guidance. He shares how this, along with the pressure to conform to normative expectations in medicine, made his training difficult, especially without any accommodations for neurodiverse students.Dr. Patrick relates to these struggles, recounting her own experiences of feeling out of place in medical school. Together, they discuss how the culture of medical education at the time did not accommodate students who did not fit the traditional mold.Dr. Neilson notes that while there are "little teeny, tiny occasional tales of change" happening now, such as program directors becoming more aware of neurodiversity and making small accommodations for students, these changes are still incremental. He expresses hope that this will continue to evolve, leading to broader acceptance and support for neurodiverse individuals in the medical profession. He further argues that including neurodiverse physicians enriches the profession in several ways. By challenging rigid norms in medicine, neurodiverse individuals push the profession to be more inclusive and compassionate. They also provide care that is uniquely attuned to the needs of neurodiverse patients, offering identity-aligned support that can enhance patient satisfaction and outcomes. Dr. Neilson stresses that by fostering diversity, the profession not only lives up to its values but also improves care for all patients.Join us as we explore medical solutions that address the urgent need to change healthcare. Meet Ty Neilson, a beacon of resilience who has risen above his challenging past to illuminate the path of a better life, and skate shop ownership. In this episode, we unravel his journey from a tumultuous upbringing in a government housing area, to finding solace and community in Skateboarding… and Cricket. Ty reflects on the importance of local skate shops as community pillars that not only provide the tangible items required to skate, but moreover, the intangible elements; a sense of belonging, inspiration and significant cultural influence.Ty's journey is one of perseverance and commitment. He recounts the day he chose to walk away from financial security by quitting his job as a concrete cutter, and spending all his house deposit money to open a skate shop. A small price to pay in order to follow a dream, and not work for someone else's.From the emotional ties to skateboarding culture and its role in the Olympics to the societal judgments and stereotypes we all grapple with, this conversation is a heartfelt tribute to personal evolution, and why some things just aren't worth stressing about. One of New Zealand's country music faves is making her return to New Zealand.  Tami Neilson, a multi-award winner and friend of the great Willie Nelson, has announced a new mini tour of the country: Neilson Sings Nelson.  She'll be performing all of her favourites from the Willie Nelson songbook, with the endorsement of Nelson himself: “Tami's the real deal and does my songs a great honour.”   The tour coincides with the release of her new album of the same title, recorded at Nelson's Pedernales Studio in Texas, featuring her brothers Jay and Todd on the backing vocals, guitar, bass, and drums.  Neilson told Mike Hosking that meeting and performing with Nelson is still something of a ‘pinch me' moment.  “I still check my phone every once in a while to see if it still exists in the world, and kind of expect to wake I from this dream that I did a duet with him.”  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this week's show we run down the top ten streaming shows of 2023 and give you ten cool automations for your home. We also read your email and take a look at the week's news. News: Amazon Denies Report Saying Freevee Is Shutting Down Sports Big Influence in Viewers' Platform Choice    Get Ready for Another Netflix Price Hike This Year, Analyst Says Other: What REALLY Happens Backstage in Live Broadcasts - INSANE Adrenaline! 10 most streamed shows of 2023 According to Neilson  Here are the 10 most streamed shows of 2023, according to Neilson, along with how many minutes that it's been watched last year: 10) “Supernatural”: 22.8 billion minutes 9) “Heartland”: 22.8 billion minutes 8) “Friends”: 25 billion minutes 7) “Gilmore Girls”: 25.2 billion minutes 6) “The Big Bang Theory”: 27.8 billion minutes 5) “Cocomelon”: 36.3 billion minutes  4) “Grey's Anatomy”: 38.6 billion minutes 3) “NCIS”: 39.4 billion minutes 2) “Bluey”: 43.9 billion minutes 1) “Suits”: 57.7 billion minutes viewed When it comes to original streaming shows, “Ted Lasso” topped the list with an impressive — but notably lesser — 16.9 billion minutes viewed. No other original streaming show cracked 15 billion minutes viewed last year. When it comes to streaming movies, Disney's 2016 hit “Moana” topped viewership minutes with 11.6 billion minutes viewed. No other streaming movie topped 10 billion minutes viewed. Combining the total viewership minutes of “Ted Lasso” and “Moana” brings you to 28.5 billion. That's less than half the total minutes viewed of “Suits,” a show that ended nearly four years ago. Ten Cool Home Automations Home automation has come such a long way since the Insteon X10 systems of the 1980s and 1990s. Today there are numerous systems available and just about all of us have some form of automation that we use daily. We pulled together 10 cool automation routines that you may want to try yourself.   Have your lights slowly dim just before bedtime. I was a skeptic when I saw this as an option but when I go to bed I do some reading and having the lights dim as I do is a nice way to doze off. I started out with the dimming taking 10 minutes. I liked it so much I now start it a full 30 minutes before my “official” bedtime.  Set the lights to randomly flash to make it appear as if you're home when away. We all have lights that turn on automatically. This takes it to the next level. You could define a set of routines that only work when you set a “Vacation Mode” on your system. Set up different ones for each day of the week. Flash your lights when your doorbell rings. This is handy if you are out in the garage, basement, or any other room where you can't hear the doorbell. Comes in handy if you are blasting music. For bonus points you can have your wireless speakers play Men at Work's Who Can it Be Now. Create individual access codes for kids, guests, and extended family members. Then, get a phone notification when specific people arrive home. Have a certain song play out your speakers when certain people arrive. Just like walk up music for baseball. It's fun and you know who just walked in or opened the garage. Install a sensor on or inside your mailbox that alerts you when your mail has arrived/been picked up. I also set a virtual light switch that gets set to on when the sensor goes off. That way if I miss the actual notification I can see that the virtual light is on in my automation app. I clear it when I get the mail. One button press turns on all lighting for a given room, floor or entire house. Great for when you are walking into a dark house or to scare away someone who should not be there. At night, when motion is sensed, ramp lights to 15% (just enough light to see, not to be blinded). Set your door to automatically lock after a set amount of time has passed. With most smart locks, you can pick intervals between 30 seconds and one hour long. Dinner Bell. Set an automation tied to a button that plays a dinner bell through your wireless speakers that dinner is ready. Can also just send out a notification if people are outside.

Neilson Powless is just getting warmed up. His rise through the sport starts decades ago, when he and his sister Shayna were playing games secretly engineered by their parents to help encourage their endurance engines. Winning the XTerra World Championships in 2012, for example, indirectly shuttled him to picking up wins in the World Tour today. Recently becoming a father, Neilson reflects on the change of perspective that comes with racing knowing there's someone(s) very special back at home. His humility is matched by his friendliness, Neilson is one of a kind and makes cycling fans both at home and abroad very proud how he performs.

In Green Dreamer's episode 413, we welcome Dr. Hilding Neilson, who shares with us his knowledge of the night skies and expertise as an astronomer traced by his Mi'kmaw lineage. Trained in the Western-scientific sphere of astrophysics and shaped by Mi'kmaq methodologies, Dr. Neilson aims to disrupt the Euro-centric claim on the night sky as codified through historical and modern Astro-colonial pursuits of objectivity, discovery, nomenclature. In demanding that Indigenous stories and systems of knowledge not only be heard but given a leading role on the stage of public policy making, Hilding invites us to reflect upon the value of night sky knowledge and ponder how it reflects and shapes life on earth, as well as how we choose to ethically engage with this knowledge moving forward.

Some people pour through comic books like they're devotional works, following the lives of superheroes like some study the lives of the saints. In this redux from the archives, Fr. Mike interviews sacred artist Neilson Carlin about the crossover between comics books and sacred art, and how the desire to emulate superheroes is truly fulfilled when we follow the saints to Christ.
