Women make 80% of healthcare decisions and outspend men two to one on care—yet when it comes to designing, funding, and scaling health tech, they're still treated like a niche. In this episode, we break down the broken flywheel holding women's health innovation back including fewer growth-stage investments, limited exits, and a system not built to serve women as the primary users of care. I'm joined by Carolyn Witte, co-founder of Tia, and Katie Drasser, CEO of Rock Health, to talk about what needs to change—and how we get there. We cover:
50% of women distrust the healthcare system in the US. Yet women make up 51% of the population and control 80% of the healthcare dollars. So, what does it look like to build trust with women in a healthcare setting? Carolyn Witte is Cofounder and CEO of Tia, the modern medical home for women. Carolyn's team is dedicated to treating women holistically rather than by body part or life stage. Tia's Whole Woman, Whole Life care model fuses gynecology, primary care, mental health and evidence-based wellness services to treat women comprehensively. On this episode of HLTH Matters, Carolyn joins hosts Dr. Jessica Shepherd, Dr. Gautam Gulati and Dr. Jordan Shlain to discuss how Tia was created out of her frustration as a patient and describe the company's evolution from the Google for women's health to care delivery platform. Carolyn explains how point solutions exacerbate the fragmentation of healthcare for women and what Tia is doing to serve the whole woman, addressing her physical, mental and reproductive health.Listen in to understand how Tia builds trust by listening to what real women want and learn what Carolyn's team does to make women feel seen, heard and cared for. Women are the power users and the power brokers of healthcare. And as the de facto “Chief Medical Officers” of their families — making healthcare decisions for their partners, children, and parents — women control an estimated 80% of all U.S. healthcare dollars.Yet our healthcare system is failing women. The majority report experiencing gender discrimination from their providers, and feel that their concerns are taken less seriously because they're women. It's no surprise, then, that the healthcare system has a “loyalty crisis” with its most powerful customer, with over half of women reporting not trusting the U.S. healthcare system. In this episode, Tia Co-founder & CEO Carolyn Witte talks about trailblazing a new paradigm for women's healthcare that treats women as whole people vs. parts or life stages.Follow guest Carolyn Witte on Twitter.Follow host Halle Tecco on Twitter.Visit the Heart of Healthcare website for episode recaps and more!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Tia's “Whole Woman, Whole Life” care model fuses gynecology, primary care, mental health and evidence-based wellness services to treat women comprehensively — a stark shift from fragmented care for different "body parts'' or life stages. Prior to founding Tia, Carolyn was a Team Lead at Google Creative Labs, developing and growing Google's core mobile consumer products, Search, Maps and Translate. In September 2021, Tia raised $100M in Series B Round led by Lone Pine Capital.

Healthcare is anything but relaxing once you're a patient. But what if you could look forward to your appointments as you look forward to a wellness visit? This was among the guidelines designers of Tia - the next generation women's healthcare platform - are operating under in their product development. Tia was first a search-engine like support companion for women interested in anonymous search of reliable health information. By today, Tia is an ecosystem of services: a personalized women's health information provider, a brick and mortar clinic in New York City. Listen to co-founder and CEO of Tia Carolyn Witte explain what patient-centered care looks like and how can healthcare be made more affordable, as in the case of Tia. This week on the podcast, I am speaking with Carolyn Witte, one of the Founders of the Tia Clinic in NYC. At the Tia Clinic, you can get integrated gynecology, wellness and primary care under one roof and one health record. They hold community events, offer same week appointments, which can be super hard to come by in the city, and they provide you with a care team. Imagine a team of physicians and wellness practitioners talking to each other and understanding your health records together so they can understand the whole you. Everything about this clinic is game changing and I can’t wait to see it grow to become a household name across the country. I loved speaking with Carolyn because you can tell how well she understands the healthcare industry and what the experience is like for anyone with a uterus to find proper care, book appointments, and actually get results that make an impact. I learned so much in our conversation and I hope you enjoy it! My main takeaways: Having a care team wherever you are will change the way you access and receive care. Understanding the cost of care is important in order to consider healthcare in your monthly/annual budget. Cycle connected care helps women see longitudinal data about their wellness and how it relates to their cycle. This is helpful when trying to diagnosis Endometriosis and PCOS. Women want to know why, not just what. Learning how to be an advocate for ourselves in the care context is a focus at Tia. Bringing costs of services down to make them more accessible is a priority at Tia. Women show a reduction in stress when they are part of a community, which is why they have community events. Carolyn says, “Don’t connect the dots forward, connect the dots backward.” This is awesome advice that I think about regularly since speaking with her. As of 2019, Carolyn and her team have taken that mission one step further with the introduction of Tia's first women's clinic and community space in New York City. Discover Rachel Schwartzmann's full interview with Carolyn, which features the story of the company and what question Carolyn hopes women ask one another more during their visit at Tia.
