When Cal finds himself dwelling on the past in a world filled with conflicts, he gets an unexpected phone call and advice from his friend, Dr. Shlain: Reduce the past to its essence, keep your feet in the present moment and put your mind 90 percent in the future – all at the same time. No need for psychedelics, here. It's as simple as: If you can see far, you can think far. This mind-bending tactic is designed to allow anybody to move forward and get the clearest thinking of their lives. Give it a try!

In troubling times, the voice of articulate optimists can lift the spirit and light a way forward. To this end, we met with feminist, movie maker, artist, thinker and founder of the Webby Awards, Tiffany Shlain. As one who made her own documentary film, "The Tribe," on Barbie and Jewish Identity 18 years ago, we began with her reflections on the recently released Barbie movie. We transitioned into several of her creative projects, including Dendrofemonology, a Feminist History Tree Ring that recounts the "herstory" of women who initially enjoyed 10,000 years of power and goddess culture. The intersectionality of her activism seeks rights for all humans because, in the end, Shlain believes in humans and in our ability to find the good in an ever-changing world. Shlain recommends navigating this unfamiliar territory with science, collaboration and grace. Technology is an extension of us, and while it can be used for ill, its powers for good emerge from pushing past our fear and engaging with it. The Webby Awards highlight this positive dimension. Her inspiration comes from ideas that stand the test of time — like a day of rest. Already we find that kids are smarter, and discovering new ways to become themselves. Her next project on neurology will debunk many common metaphors about teenagers, who she sees as "emotionally brilliant." We reassert that children are our legacy. In closing, we remember her father, Leonard Shlain, who encouraged us to think big and be present. Join us.

Groundbreaking research which proposes that the rise of alphabetic literacy reconfigured the human brain and brought about profound changes in history, religion, and gender relations. Making remarkable connections across brain function, myth, and anthropology,  Dr. Shain shows why pre-literate cultures were principally informed by holistic, right-brain modes that venerated the Goddess, images, and feminine values. Writing drove cultures toward linear left-brain thinking and this shift upset the balance between men and women, initiating the decline of the feminine and ushering in patriarchal rule. Leonard Shlain (1939 - 2009) was the author of Art & Physics: Parallel Visions in Space Time & Light and The Alphabet Versus the Goddess: The Conflict Between Word and Image. Dr. Shlain was an American surgeon, author, and inventor. Dr. Shlain reveals why wealth changes the outcome of how he can deliver healthcare. Plus, we discuss the type of people willing to avoid the insurance route and become his patients. Tune in as Dr. Shlain reveals the biggest surprise he came across when starting his practice.   IN THIS EPISODE: [01:30] Dr. Shlain opens up about his background and experience. [10:30] How Dr. Shlain's practice differs from the old country doctor approach. [16:50] The types of people willing to avoid insurance and become patients of Dr. Shlain. [21:20] Why access to wealth changes the outcome of how Dr. Shlain can deliver healthcare. [28:00] Dr. Shlain reveals the biggest surprise he came across when starting his practice.   KEY TAKEAWAYS: People are resentful for paying extra on top of their insurance, making it feel like the doctor is greedy. However, insurance companies do not pay doctors much money. People want to know that there's a doctor they can trust. Find a doctor that has zero incentive other than your good outcome. Life's too short to deal with people that are either abusive or cross your boundaries at every turn. BIO: I believe good medicine and great health come only from a deep understanding of people, data, and science. I am a doctor who takes his craft seriously and has built the model family office for health and medicine in the United States. I read, write and speak on healthcare innovation in the spirit of advancing & enhancing the experience people, both doctors and patients, have while traversing Fortress healthcare. My hobbies are linguistics, quantum physics, neuroscience, anthropology, music, social science and humanity. Not afraid to be wrong if it moves the ball forward. Working on solving social problems; not predicting them. Interested in getting it right; not being right. Leonard Shlain (1937 - 2009) was a surgeon, inventor, and author whose 1991 book "Art & Physics: Parallel Visions in Space, Time, and Light" shaped much of our artistic thinking. Shlain's core argument is: the great (visual) artists are visionaries who are able to presage discoveries in other fields by cultivating their own, more individualistic work. But how can we actually use Leonard Shlain's theories for understanding individual works of art? And is this form of analysis enough? American life is dominated by machines: our computers, our televisions, our phones. This has been especially true over the past year as technology kept us connected—to our jobs, our friends, our families, even our doctors. But, as the country sees the light at the end of the tunnel of the pandemic, what now? What has our reliance on technology done to us for not only the past year, but for the past decade (or longer)? Two authors, Sherry Turkle and Tiffany Shlain, will use the occasion of the publications of Turkle's new book (The Empathy Diaries: A Memoir) and the paperback version of Shlain's book (24/6: Giving up Screens One Day a Week to Get More Time, Creativity, and Connection) to have an intimate and timely discussion on the urgent need to reclaim humanity and empathy in this technological age. Turke's latest book illuminates our present search for authentic connection in a time of uncharted challenges. Her book ties together her coming-of-age and her pathbreaking research on technology, empathy and ethics. Growing up in postwar Brooklyn, Turkle searched for clues to her identity in a house filled with mysteries. She mastered the codes that governed her mother’s secretive life. She learned never to ask about her absent scientist father—and never to use his name, her name. Before empathy became a way to find connection, it was her strategy for survival. Shlain's book recounts the efforts she and her family have made to gain more time, productivity, connection and presence in their lives by giving up screens for one day a week. Her book takes readers on a thought-provoking and entertaining journey through time and technology, introducing a strategy for flourishing in our 24/7 world. Drawn from the ancient ritual of Shabbat, she says that living 24/6 can work for anyone from any background. With humor and wisdom, Shlain shares her story, offering the accessible lessons she has learned and providing a blueprint for how to do it yourself. Please join for this special event about the critical need to reclaim our lives from technology. It has become even more important recently, in wake of the worldwide pandemic that has made so many of us reliant on screens for work, shopping, socializing, even exercise. COVID-19 has changed how we use the Web in some beneficial ways, but it has also made us even more dependent on screens for our every need. We are now spending almost all day online, and many of us are finding that it’s just too much. Turning off screens now feels like it provides double resilience for the soul. Having a much-needed boundary and separation -- a day unlike the others, a day dedicated to being present, reflecting, resting, and connecting with those around me -- helps us make sense of this unusual way we are living, where time seems to blur between days and between work and family and life. Because that’s what Shabbat is all about -- carving out time to appreciate and find joy in what’s right in front of you, and focus on what truly matters. As Heschel calls it, it’s creating a “Palace in Time.”

If they fail to provide both quality and value, people vote with their feet. But in healthcare, we’ve traded away that control to the insurance company, and the result is an increasingly dehumanizing system that looks at people as vessels of disease to be fixed rather than people in need of healing. How can we bring that critical patient-caregiver relationship back and design an integrated approach to care that builds around the human being?Mark Ganz is the CEO of Cambia Health Solutions, a family of companies working to create a person-focused and economically-sustainable healthcare system. How long have you gone without checking your phone in the past week? 10, 15, maybe 20 minutes while you’re awake? Our screens have commandeered our eyeballs and taken hold of our lives. Our phones buzz constantly with notifications, even when we intentionally move them off the dinner table, away from our bedsides, and out of sight. Ten years ago, before smartphones had even become mainstream, filmmaker Tiffany Shlain felt like something was askew in her life—and believed that technology had something to do with it. So she and her family instituted a “Tech Shabbat,” one day a week where they refused to use any form of modern technology. It involved installing landlines, printing out maps, and actually looking one another in the eye during conversations, but a decade later Shlain has determined that the benefits of consciously disconnecting outweigh the short-term sense of accomplishment we get from being on our phones. Shlain joins this week’s Gadget Lab podcast to talk about her evolving relationship with technology, and the process of stepping away from film to write a full-length book. On this episode, Dr.G is joined by the highly sought after doctor, entrepreneur, philanthropist, activist, and philosopher, Dr. Jordan Shlain. As a purveyor of subtleties in health, Dr. Shlain challenges our preconceptions of health and medicine and provides a provocative perspective on how we can overcome the biggest challenges that face our industry. Dr. Shlain shares his personal story of how he built one of the most successful concierge medical practices on the backs of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel – where he learned how to deliver a five start customer experience for his patients. He takes us behind the scenes of how his patients helped inspire him to build his digital health venture, Healthloop; and why he believes we need a new voice in healthcare through his latest media venture, Tincture. Taking us back to his early childhood, Dr. Shlain shares never-before-told stories that have influenced his thinking over the years. Simply stated, he takes us on intellectual journey that will blow your mind. All this and more on today’s episode. Now, That’s Unusual. About Dr. Jordan Shlain Dr. Jordan Shlain is an activist and philosopher in the field of health and medicine. He is the founder and chairman of Healthloop, a digital health venture that automates follow-up care and tracks patient progress, as well as the founding editor of Tincture, an online publication of open-source thoughtwear for leaders in health and wellness. Dr. Shlain provides a provocative perspective regarding how we might overcome the biggest challenges we face in health care. Dr. Shlain founded Private Medical, a successful concierge medical practice. Initially partnering with the Mandarin Hotel, he created an empathy-driven approach to his patients modeled after the hospitality industry. Dr. Shlain works to promote that commitment to five-star service and revolutionize the way we do medicine. Key Interview Takeaways Medicine, at its core, is a conversation between a doctor and a patient to solve a problem. Dr. Shlain contends that the empathetic expert, be it a doctor or nurse, should ask not only, “What’s the matter with you?” but also, “What matters to you?” Through this dialogue, the two can work together to craft a workable treatment plan. To be meaningful, technology needs to offer the user preferences and be contextual, relevant, actionable and shareable. Dr. Shlain created Healthloop with these principles in mind to follow up with patients, collect data, and deliver bite-sized information at appropriate times during recovery. In the Healthloop system, the doctor’s office calls the patient when a concern surfaces, and the inbound phone call volume to medical practices is reduced by 70%. “Change always starts with a small group of people banging a drum.” Dr. Shlain maintains that our health care system requires a systematic change initiated by courageous leaders who are willing to take risks. To that end, he started the online publication Tincture in an effort to get the right conversation going via a platform in which we can “allow ourselves the uncomfortable luxury of changing our mind.” We must recraft the language of medicine to remove the jargon. Dr. Shlain argues that it is important to call things what they really are, rather than masking the human suffering at the heart of generic terms like “readmission rate” and “consumer friendly.” The consumer mindset is one of excitement, an exercise of free will to buy products or services that will add to their lives. Meanwhile, a patient’s mindset is one of anxiousness as they choose from limited options to get their lives back. The ModernMD: Dr. Jordan Shlain Dr. Jordan Shlain is a nationally recognized physician for his innovative approach to the delivery of healthcare. Jordan is the Founder and Chairman of Healthloop, a cloud-based platform that automates follow-up care; keeping doctors, patients and care-givers connected between visits with clinical information that is insightful, actionable, and engaging. Dr. Shlain was appointed commissioner by the Mayor to the SF Health Service System Board and sits on the Board of Hope Street Group, a bi-partisan Washington, DC policy think tank. He was named one of the top healthcare innovators by HealthSpottr. Jordan is a frequent speaker at various conferences; Health 2.0, RockHealth, Economist Big Ideas, Futuremed and UC Berkeley's Pre-Med 101, and consults with the investor community as a due diligence expert. Success Quotes: “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” - John Muir  “The art of medicine consists of amusing the patient while nature cures the disease.” - Voltaire “It's very difficult to find a black cat in a dark room, especially when there is no cat.” -  Ignorance: How it Drives Science by Stuart Firestein  White Coat to Business Suit: After finishing his training in 1997, Jordan joined a private practice in San Francisco with the promise of taking of the practice in a year. Jordan's deal to take over the practice fell though at the end of the year. He decided to take a walk home that would change his direction as he made an unexpected stop at Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Listen as Dr. Shlain share this life altering experience as he learns the art of five star patient care from the hotel concierge and the story of how he accidentally started HealthLoop.  Idea to Venture: The Idea: How do you digitally enable a five star experience for patients while decreasing the burden of routine processes in a doctors office? Listen to the big vision of Healthloop to improve the patient experience and unburden the doctor from the mundane. Failures: Started with a spreadsheet, a single question, and daily patient phone for real-time tracking. Jordan decided to scale this initial experiment and design a software product that would proactively and asynchronously reach out to his patients. Success: HealthLoop honors the physicians life and respects the patient's journey through their illness. It provides a voice to happy patients and benchmarks physician performance.  Lesson Learned: How do you know what is happening with your patients now? Predictive analytics and claims based big data fail to tell you what is happening. The big opportunity for intervention is the present.  Business Rounds: Best Advice: Take some time off and go see the world. Daily Success Habits: In the morning, Jordan learns two new things that he will keep forever. At the end of each day, he spends five minutes reflecting on his day and what he failed at. Healthcare Trends: Healthcare is moving from a world of interventions to a world of advocacy. It won't just be about what is the matter with you, but what matters to you. Below are some highlights. Access: Large focus has been on healthcare access with the creation of telemedicine, minute clinics, and video visits. Genetics/Personalized Medicine: We are far away from applying this in meaningful way. Exciting opportunities exist with genetic markers and drug therapy. Medical Board Certification/Medical Training: Technology will change medical school training and process for board certification. Artificial Intelligence/Algorithms: Humans can't scale and algorithms can have empathy. There will always be a role for the healing arts. Links:

On the Wednesday, March 19th, 2014 broadcast at 10AM Pacific/1PM Eastern my very special guest is Dr. Jordan Shlain (@DrShlain), the founder of Healthloop (@Healthloop)  '..a cloud-based platform that automates follow-up care; keeping doctors, patients and care-givers connected between visits with clinical information that is insightful, actionable, and engaging.' Earlier I caught up with Dr. Shlain at the 2013 mHealth Summit. For the interview click here. Dr. Shlain is a fixture at many digital health or emerging business model conferences focused in the disruption of silo-ed American ‘sickcare.' He is the tireless warrior and ‘a pioneer in digital physician-and-patient-engagement'. When Dr. Shlain talks people listen, and recently from the stage at the mHealth 2012 Summit he announced a $10 million Series-A investment in HealthLoop led by Canvas Venture Fund, an early-stage venture fund managed by the Morgenthaler Technology Investment Company. In this exchange we learn more about the company including the marketplace pain inspiring it's launch, and the innovative remedies unique to the HealthLoop platform. Among many intriguing observations, Dr. Shlain points out that the problem in healthcare is ‘..we have no healthcare ecosystem, but a freak-o-system' of misaligned and silo-ed healthcare stakeholders with little incentive to co-operate. This is a great chat, do yourself a favor listen to the entire clip. Join us!
