To mark PQA's 20th anniversary, PQS Managing Director Todd Sega sits down with Laura Cranston, the founding CEO who built PQA from a one-person shop into the most influential pharmacy quality measurement organization in the country.Laura traces PQA's origins to April 2006, just months after Medicare Part D launched, talks about the alliance's growth, the groundwork for what would eventually become the EQUIPP platform, and the broader pharmacy quality infrastructure in use today. The conversation turns to the seismic shift in the CY2027 Final Rule and what it means that pharmacy-accountable clinical measures now command roughly 50% of a Medicare Advantage plan's Star Rating. Laura calls it a game changer, arguing that health plans simply cannot navigate this new environment without doubling down on their partnerships with community pharmacy. The episode closes with a look ahead at where AI and technology are taking quality measurement from faster measure development to the shift from retrospective accountability toward proactive, near-real-time quality improvement.https://www.pqa.org/
EPISODE OVERVIEW Episode 100 is a milestone celebration — and a role reversal. This time, Carolyn Butler-Madden is in the guest seat, interviewed by purpose champion and trusted colleague Peter ter Weeme. Together they reflect on 100 episodes of For Love & Money: the insights that have surprised, some of the stories that guests have shared, and the ideas that have grown more powerful with every conversation. What began as a 12-episode companion to Carolyn's book became something far bigger — a growing archive of proof that purpose-led business is not a trade-off but a compounding advantage. This episode draws threads across all 100 conversations: love as the unexpected connective tissue, purpose as the engine of genuine innovation, and identity as the foundation everything else is built on. ABOUT PETER TER WEEME Peter ter Weeme is one of Canada's most respected purpose champions — a leader whose commitment to purpose in challenging industries has earned him recognition that goes well beyond titles. The Canadian Purpose Economy Project named its Purpose Champions Award in his honour: the Peter ter Weeme Purpose Champions Award. He and Carolyn collaborate through Purpose Ignition, and his decision to turn the tables and interview Carolyn for this milestone episode is a tribute to the relationship they've built through shared belief in what business can be. THEMES EXPLORED IN THIS EPISODE Love as the unexpected constant Why Carolyn opens every interview with the question: “Do you believe there's a role for love in business?” How “love” arrives differently in every conversation — and yet keeps arriving The Dave Dahl story: a guest who resisted the question and answered it completely by the end What 100 episodes have clarified: when business is driven by humanity and is profitable, that is business at its absolute best Purpose and profit: proof over 100 episodes The case for purpose and profit going hand in hand rather than head-to-head Intrepid Travel: from Episode 2 to Episode 99, the most-featured guest on the show and why — on track to $1.3B, AFR Fast Growth List 2024 (#2), B Corp certified The elephant rides decision: pulling out of a highly profitable offering because it conflicted with who they were The Antarctica decision: withdrawing from a profitable tour and partnering to do it more sustainably Sarah King's concept of “impatient capital”: purpose held to the same standard as financial targets COVID as a test: Intrepid going to zero revenue overnight, using purpose as their North Star — and rehiring most of those they'd let go Other proof points: Who Gives a Crap, Outland Denim, Future Super, Dave's Killer Bread (sold to Flower Foods for $275M USD) Purpose as the engine of genuine innovation Good Citizens Eyewear: born around a dining table during a climate conversation — Harry Robinson (aged 8) holding a water bottle next to a pair of sunnies Koskela: an office furniture subscription model designed to solve the waste problem, applying a familiar model in a new context Pioneera (Danielle Owen Whitford): an AI-driven language model that detects burnout signals in workplace communication platforms like Slack and Teams film (Elizabeth Tyler): a film platform built to bridge a divided world — curating films that tackle complex social issues including domestic violence and coercive control Athena Manley / The Flexible CEO: identifying a two-sided problem (experienced C-suite leaders overlooked; mid-sized businesses unable to attract quality CEOs) and building a bridge Robin Power / Insitutek: civil engineering touches 70% of Australia's emissions — using that stat as a foundation for a new kind of company built around positive impact The pattern that kept emerging: people who had been “smashed” by their own experience and came out of it determined to help others avoid the same Purpose isn't powerful until it's personal Sandy Blackburn (Ep 89): 15 years in South Africa, living in townships, married into a Black South African family — Ubuntu as an antidote to Western individualism, and “money as a way to buy yourself space to love” Simon Sheikh (Ep 4): founding Future Super with a question — “In 2050 my son will be 35. What's the world going to look like? I can't sit on my hands” Peter Baines (Ep 91): forensic investigator sent to the Bali bombings and the Boxing Day tsunami — founder of Hands Across the Water, unable to walk away from what he saw James Bartle / Outland Denim: a champion motocross rider who saw the film Taken, then witnessed sex trafficking firsthand in Cambodia — “I could not walk past this” Desmond Campbell: introducing himself in language before the interview — discovering he was descended from Vincent Lingiari of the Wave Hill Walk-Off, and how knowing that changed everything The big takeaway across 100 episodes: “If your purpose isn't connected to who you are, I'd question whether it's genuinely a purpose” The next chapter: Episodes 101 and beyond Carolyn's intention for the next 100: create more space to go deeper into the guest's personal purpose and the story that brought them there The connection to the third book: identity + purpose + action = the stories people tell about who their organisation truly is Purpose isn't powerful until it's personal — the single thread that runs through every episode GUESTS AND EPISODES REFERENCED Geoff Manchester, Co-founder, Intrepid Travel — Ep 2 (also featured across multiple episodes – Ep 69 Part I & Part II; Ep 99 Sara King) Dave Dahl, Creator, Dave's Killer Bread — Ep 8 Simon Sheikh, CEO & Co-founder, Future Super — Ep 4 Sandy Blackburn, Founder Social Outcomes — Ep 89 Peter Baines, Founder, Hands Across the Water — Ep 91 Sarah King, GM of Purpose, Intrepid Travel — Ep 99 Robin Power, Founder, Insitutek & Ground Improvement — recent episode (Ep 97) Nik & Harry Robinson, Good Citizens Eyewear Sasha Titchkosky (Koskela), office furniture & sustainability Danielle Owen Whitford, Founder & CEO, Pioneera Elizabeth Tyler, Founder good.film – Ep 90 Athena Manley, The Flexible CEO – Ep 94 James Bartle, Founding CEO, Outland Denim – Ep 10 Simon Griffiths, CEO Who Gives A Crap – Ep 29 Desmond Campbell, CEO Welcome To Country – Ep 59 Peter ter Weeme – Ep 86 WORK WITH CAROLYN Book Carolyn as a keynote speaker: carolynbutlermadden.com Purpose consulting and advisory: thecauseeffect.com.au Connect with Carolyn on Linkedin Get in touch: carolyn@thecauseeffect.com.au

Dan Caruso, Managing Director, Caruso Ventures; Founding CEO of Zayo Group This is Part 2 of our conversation with Dan Caruso, founder and former CEO of Zayo Group. Be sure to start with Part 1. It covers the Zayo thesis, deal sourcing, structure, and the negotiation playbook, whereas this episode picks up at the execution. Part 2 is about the equity value-creation framework Dan built at Zayo, applying the same IRR math PE firms use for their portfolio companies to daily operating decisions. It replaced budgets and tied every compensation decision to a single equation. It ends with the exit and how Dan put together a competing bid after a buyer consortium locked up the debt market. What You'll Learn How Zayo's integration process matured across 45 deals + where it broke post- IPO The equity value creation model: the IRR metric that replaced budgets and tied compensation to a single equation Negotiation tactics: countering lower, manufacturing urgency, and splitting the CEO from their investor at the table Culture during integration: one culture, take it or leave it IRR compression as a sell signal and how Dan acted on it before most saw it coming The sell process: engineering a competing bid after buyers locked up the debt market The ICG deal: $8.7M in, $250M out, 18 months Want to apply Dan's framework to your own business? The Intelligence Hub has the Equity Value Creation Operating Model, a step-by-step guide to replacing budget-based management with IRR as your operating compass. Dan Caruso, Managing Director, Caruso Ventures; Founding CEO of Zayo Group Dan Caruso built Zayo from a startup into an $8.5B bandwidth infrastructure platform through 45 acquisitions. In Part 1, he walks through the full buyer-led playbook — how the thesis was built on a contrarian bet that everyone else got wrong, how proprietary deals were sourced through early relationship-building, and why fast integration wasn't a reputation problem — it was a competitive advantage. He also breaks down the metric trap most roll-up operators fall into: mistaking EBITDA growth for true value creation. If your board is tracking acquisitions individually or your deal structure is loaded with earnouts, this conversation will challenge how you're running the program. What you'll learn: How to identify and build a contrarian acquisition thesis with investor alignment Why proprietary deal flow is a brand and relationship problem, not a sourcing problem How Zayo executed an unsolicited, fully funded offer on a larger public company — and won Why tracking individual acquisitions kills synergies in a roll-up When earnouts hurt more than they help — and what to use instead How clean, all-cash offers win on certainty, not price Dan's approach to thesis validation, investor alignment, and platform value creation is documented in the Roll-Up Readiness Assessment inside the Intelligence Hub, a stage-gated guide built directly from this conversation. This limit, set out in the Paris Agreement, has defined a decade of climate action, but is fast approaching. So what happens next? This week, Tom, Christiana and Paul grapple with the latest science, the looming risks of climate tipping points, and the urgent need to prepare for the worst - even while hoping and working for the best. With his background in building drug development companies, Doug highlighted the lack of practical tools for addressing these issues. Michael expressed his interest in innovative solutions to mental health problems, given his personal experience with clinical depression. The conversation was set to be more organic and conversational, with Doug sharing more about his company and their approach to mental health. Paradigm Shift in Drug Development Doug expressed his belief that their work has the potential to be a paradigm shift in drug development, moving from daily treatment of symptoms to more interventional therapies that can rapidly fix conditions like depression. He highlighted the promising results from their studies, with patients experiencing benefits lasting at least a year after just a couple of doses. Michael shared his personal experience with depression and burnout, emphasizing the importance of their work in addressing this widespread issue. He also asked Doug about his ability to anticipate future challenges and steps in the approval process for their work. Drug Development Challenges and Success Doug discussed the challenges and complexities of drug development, particularly in the mental health sector. He highlighted the team's experience and success in developing treatments, with 60+ INDs and 37 exits. Doug also emphasized the personal motivation of the team members, many of whom have been affected by mental health issues. He acknowledged the regulatory hurdles and administrative complexities involved in drug development but stressed the importance of these steps in creating effective treatments. Michael added that the success of the treatments could also positively impact the revenue of psychiatrists and their practices. Improving Mental Health Care Efficiency Doug discussed the potential of a new treatment to improve mental health care. He highlighted that depressed patients require a lot of attention, often visiting their physicians multiple times a year for medication adjustments and dealing with side effects. He also pointed out the shortage of psychiatrists and the long wait times for new patients. Doug suggested that their treatment, which only requires dosing once or twice, could keep patients out of the system for at least a year, freeing up resources for new patients. He also mentioned the potential for interventional psychiatry centers to see more patients if the treatment reduces the required visits. Mental Health and Metabolic Connection Michael and Doug discussed the challenges of mental health, particularly financial stress and depression. Michael shared his personal experience of overcoming depression with the help of medication and therapy and expressed his excitement about the potential of innovative work in mental health. Doug emphasized the link between metabolic health and mental health, suggesting that a poor diet can lead to reduced mental function and that mental health issues can affect an individual's metabolic health. Both agreed on the importance of addressing mental health issues to improve overall well-being and happiness. Phase 3 Program Progress and Strategy Doug discussed the progress of their phase 3 program, focusing on the challenges and complexities involved, such as drug scheduling and licensing. He expressed optimism about the potential of their treatments, citing their significant effects and the absence of dosing every day in their studies. Doug also outlined their long-term strategy, which includes leveraging their phase 3 approval in depression to treat other conditions and shift from daily chronic dosing to more interventional treatments. He emphasized the potential to break the cycle of polypharmacy and create a platform for various treatments. Michael supported their work and encouraged more people to learn about their efforts.

Episode 363 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Jay Batson, Acquia Co-Founder & Founding CEO, serial entrepreneur, investor, and mentor. Lots of people like to make predictions, especially around this time of the year. Few are right. Jay on the other hand made some bold predictions about the future in a Forrester report that he published back in 1995 called Beyond Internet Gaga and it is pretty remarkable. So what does Jay predict in 1995? Yes, the internet was emerging but these predictions were made when there were only about 35 million internet users and before the Netscape IPO. He detailed three scenarios: 1. The first was internet-based cyberattacks. 2. The second was how a younger generation would be glued to the internet (think screentime) and how it would replace the television, plus the emergence of social media, & online gaming. 3. The third was the advancement of smart appliances. It's really amazing and as you'll hear, Jay has a knack for seeing the future and creating businesses that capitalize on shifts in technology, some that have been widely successful or some that just didn't hit. We chat about all of them. In this podcast, we cover: * Jay's background story and how he got started in entrepreneurship by building a company in the energy sector. * Moving to Boston and more of his early experiences in the tech industry. * All the details about founding PingTel and its innovation in IP phones and he even pulls out one of the phones for the visual, plus his reflection on why the company didn't succeed. * The full story of how he met Dries Buytaert (who was a guest on Episode #326) and how they co-founded Acquia together and lots of great scaling stories to unicorn status. * His role post-Acquia as a mentor and investor. Why founders should spend more time on their go-to-market strategy. * The importance of co-founder and investor alignment. * And so much more.

If you follow the world of cultivated meat, you probably know that a few companies have gotten historic regulatory approval and have sold some limited quantities of product both in the US and Singapore. But earlier this year, Meatly—a company founded only in 2021 and with just a few million British pounds in their pocket—succeeded in getting regulatory approval to start selling its cultivated chicken meat…in pet food. This was the first-ever European approval for a cultivated meat product, and the first-ever approval for such a product in the pet food space. And as someone with a dog who sadly makes his distaste for plant-based dog food very clear, I can assure you that I'm eager to see if my dog Eddie will enjoy Meatly's debut product. In this episode, I talk with Meatly CEO Owen Ensor about his journey from starting the company to now. We discuss the scale he's at, the cost structure of his product, the inclusion rates in pet food he anticipates, what stores he plans to sell in at first, how he'll fund the company, when he thinks cultivated meat may make a dent in total meat demand, and much more. It's a riveting conversation with someone making headlines across the alt-meat world. Will pet food be the gateway for cultivated meat's market entrance? You be the judge. Discussed in this episode Owen became vegan after watching Cowspiracy. Owen's chart showing the timeline to regulatory approval for various cultivated meat companies. Paul's essay on pet food's contribution to total meat demand. Bond is another company growing chicken protein for the pet market. You can see Paul's dog Eddie enjoying it here. Our past episodes with Jim Mellon from Agronomics and Mark Post from Mosa Meat. Owen recommends reading Good to Great. More about Owen Ensor Owen is the Founding CEO of Meatly. Since establishing Meatly in 2021, with only £3.5m in funding, it has become the first company in Europe to get regulatory approval for cultivated meat, developed industry-leading technical processes, and created the world's first cultivated pet food products. Before establishing Meatly, Owen started his career at the Management Consultancy company Bain and scaled one of the world's first insect protein facilities.
