Why we swim can often be political, and swimmer Grace Wright-Arora has completed research on pollution, activism and alternative water knowledges among users of the River Avon, near Bristol. Central to this work is understanding why people swim in the Avon, despite knowing of the often high risks of exposure to pollution and even infection there. This podcast is about her swimming experiences, how Conham river bathers navigate uncertainty and risk of exposure, and the politics of Avon River management.

Garima Arora is the India born chef of the two Michelin star restaurant Gaa in Bangkok, Thailand. She is the only female Indian chef with two Michelin stars. Garima has been working tirelessly to awaken the transformative potential of Indian cuisine both in India and abroad for many years. She developed a non-profit called Food Forward India, that documents, discover and catalogue the diversity and complexity of Indian food and the culture surrounding it, and is also a judge on MasterChef India, one of the most wide-reaching culinary television shows on earth. In our conversation, we speak of how the perception of Indian food has changed since she opened the restaurant. I spent two months in the country when I was 25, traveling on 3rd class trains everywhere, going from the Himalayas in the north to Goa in the south, and the border with Pakistan in the west to Varanasi in the east. Aside of being one of the most impactful periods of my life, I tasted so many things that were new to me and I haven't seen since. Indian food, the cuisine of a massive landscape with hundreds of ecosystems and more people than any other country on the planet, was, for many years, reduced to a handful of curries and breads outside of the country. It's so vast and rich and has been bottled up within India for so long, but suddenly it's starting to spread. This is very much a big moment for Indian food outside of India. Tresind Studio in Dubai was just awarded 3 Michelin stars. Semma in New York was named the best restaurant in the city by The New York Times. And within India there is a lot going on too, not just with fine dining restaurants, but at the street level there is an energy there that is growing by the day. This is a cuisine, sorry not a cuisine, but thousands of them, that have been overlooked for far too long.Aside of trying to juggle parenting with chef life and her early career as a journalist, Garima talks about her work at Gaa. She tells us about the historic Thai house that was moved in pieces to Bangkok and reassembled with the help of a modern architecture firm to create the setting of the restaurant. She tells us how she cooks the Thai fruit durian on a tandoor oven as her main course, which sounds like one of the most delicious things ever.READ MORE at NEW WORLDER.
Today's Episode is special and completely out of the ordinary. Regular listeners will know that in most episodes I will talk to senior insurance and reinsurance executives and focus on what they have just done and what are about to do. Today's no different in that respect, but it's a far richer encounter because of who my guest is and what he has been doing since the summer of 2023. Until very recently Steve Arora was the co-founder of Alpine Re, a new balance sheet reinsurer looking to tap into a disrupted reinsurance market. Alpine Re didn't end up materialising, but only after an intense 20-month period of activity in which investors of all shapes and sizes were contacted and canvassed. All this means that Steve is currently better qualified than even the best investment banker to talk about what investors want from the reinsurance industry. Once you have left no stone unturned you get to see the real layout of the bedrock below and in our interview Steve goes really deeply into the appetites, hopes and fears of each investor type. We also examine in great detail the optimal design of the model reinsurer of today. If you had a blank piece of paper and could start a new reinsurer from scratch, where would you be domiciled and how many underwriting locations would you have? And what would you be looking to write? Would you be a specialist or a generalist and what would your relationship with technology be? Understandably Steve has been thinking very hard about all of these questions and his insights are highly valuable. This episode is a great illustration of how no experience ever goes to waste. Steve is on excellent form and the interview has great pace and intensity. In our world very few people try something genuinely entrepreneurial more than once in their careers and in this meeting you'll learn all of the lessons that Steve has learnt from time out spent a long way out of his comfort zone. It's clear to me that the next role or venture that Steve becomes involved with will benefit immeasurably from this recent intense experience. In the meantime I can highly recommend a listen. NOTES: During our conversation I couldn't remember when Steve was first on the podcast. It was on Episode 8, way back in 2020 when he was CEO of Axis Re: https://thevoiceofinsurance.podbean.com/e/ep8-japan-florida-and-casualty-renewals-preview-steve-arora-axis-re/ LINKS: We thank our naming sponsor AdvantageGo: https://www.advantagego.com

Show notes:Did you know that ultra processed foods (UPFs) make 57% of the average British diet and up to 80% when it comes to children and people with lower incomes. And that the major food and drink companies lobbied to block the UK government's efforts pushing for discounts on healthier and minimally processed products In the Indian sub-continent meanwhile, an average household derives more calories from processed foods than fruits (The Lancet study 2020). What is staggering is that this diet has been reshaped over the course of a single generation. While regulations around ultra-processed foods are tightening in both the UK and India, food regulations in India are considered weak, ambiguous, and industry-friendly, leading to a lack of strong front-of-pack labelling and effective advertising restrictions. Last year I reached out to the Access to Nutrition Initiative (ATNI) in India - a pivotal global foundation dedicated to transforming the food industry to learn more about their work and the ATNI's India Index. The India Index 2023 assesses the performance of the 20 largest food and beverage manufacturers of India. The findings based on 1,901 products are not unexpected but still staggering
Nigam Arora says he's bullish on the markets as institutions are now in what he calls a "chase mode" of the current rally. His company's plan to take profits in Feb. 2025 on tariff uncertainty led them to reposition ahead of April's downturn and take advantage of lower prices. Nigam sees a 60% chance of stagflation, but doesn't believe a recession is imminent. On individual stocks he says today marks the first signs of capitulation for UnitedHealth (UNH). Nigam adds that his company is buying Microsoft (MSFT) and TXNM Energy (TXNM). Nigam also likes Cybersecurity stocks & Boston Scientific (BSX) in a stagflationary environment.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about
Maximising email sign-ups is the name of the game in our latest chat. We dive deep into the effectiveness of using mystery offers over straightforward discounts, revealing how this simple tweak can significantly boost opt-in rates. I recently tested this with a luxury home brand, and we saw a jump from 12% to 18% in email sign-ups, proving that a little mystery goes a long way. We also explore the importance of running A/B tests on pop-ups, focusing on elements like graphics and copy to see what resonates best with your audience. By the end, you'll be armed with practical strategies to enhance your email marketing efforts and truly optimise your approach moving forward. This insightful episode brings to light the often-overlooked power of email pop-ups in the eCommerce landscape. Shaan Arora, the founder of Alia, joins the conversation to shed light on how effective pop-ups can significantly enhance email sign-up rates and, ultimately, sales. He shares a recent success story where a simple pivot from standard discount offers to a mystery offer resulted in a remarkable increase in email opt-ins, demonstrating the effectiveness of curiosity-driven engagement. Sian's insights challenge the conventional wisdom that bigger discounts always lead to better results, revealing that the way an offer is presented can have a profound impact on customer behavior. Listeners are guided through the essential components of crafting compelling pop-ups, with Sian emphasizing the need for A/B testing to optimize every element. He discusses the common pitfalls brands face, such as neglecting the testing process or failing to update their pop-up designs. Through various examples, he illustrates how testing different graphics, copy, and offers can uncover hidden opportunities to boost sign-up rates and, by extension, sales. The episode underscores the idea that brands should approach pop-up strategies with the same level of optimization and analysis they apply to other marketing channels. The conversation also touches on the timing and context of pop-up displays, suggesting that brands should aim to present pop-ups within the first 10 seconds of a user's visit to capitalize on their initial interest. Sian advocates for multi-stage pop-ups that engage users with relevant questions before asking for their email addresses, noting that this technique can lead to higher conversion rates. By the end of the episode, listeners are equipped with actionable strategies to refine their email pop-up tactics, ensuring they can effectively grow their email lists and enhance their overall marketing performance.Takeaways: Using mystery offers instead of fixed percentage discounts can significantly boost email opt-in rates. It's essential to test various elements of your pop-ups, like graphics and copy, to optimize performance. Running multi-stage pop-ups has shown to increase user commitment and improve signup rates effectively. Brands often overlook the importance of ongoing A/B testing for their pop-up strategies and should treat them similarly to ads. Zero party data questions can enhance engagement by tailoring the pop-up experience to customer interests. Timing is crucial; displaying pop-ups within the first 10 seconds of page load is generally recommended for optimal engagement. In any organization sometimes things will go wrong or just not work out. While in many cases this might be due to mistakes or errors, at other times it is due to professional misconduct – often leading to significant consequences for both the organization and the individuals concerned. To explore the issue of professional misconduct in greater depth, I am delighted to be joined on the Brain for Business podcast by the co-author of a recent paper on the subject, Will Harvey. Will Harvey is a Professor of Leadership at Melbourne Business School in Australia and is currently the Director of the Social Purpose Centre, as well as being an International Research Fellow at the Oxford University Centre for Corporate Reputation. Will researches on reputation, talent management and leadership within organisations. He has recently published the book, Reputations at Stake, with Oxford University Press and his work has appeared in journals such as Harvard Business Review, Journal of Management Studies, Human Relations, Management Learning, Work, Employment & Society, and the British Journal of Management. The article discussed in the interview - Why Individuals Commit Professional Misconduct and What Leaders Can Do to Prevent It – is published in California Management Review and is available to download here: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/00081256241305815 Full Reference: Harvey, W. Simon argues that the system works, but emphasises the need for a cohesive society supported by fair tax policies. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is a need for a cohesive society that balances economic growth with social responsibility. Investing and risking personal capital should be treated differently from earning a salary. The public sector could benefit from adopting productivity measures similar to those in the private sector. The current system may lack accountability and incentives for performance, leading to inefficiencies. Complacency and a lack of competitive drive have emerged in society, particularly among younger generations. BEST MOMENTS "The driving force isn't the personal wealth. The driving force is to achieve your potential and to be successful, to be the best you can be." "I made it my job to skate where the puck is going rather than where the puck is."
