TWLL TAKEOVER – Welcome to the TWLL Takeover of The Hearing! We've joined forces with Transforming Women's Leadership in the Law (TWLL) to bring you this special mini-series focusing on issues of women's leadership, the stories of inspiring leaders, and the things we can all do to make the legal profession a better place for women – and for everyone. Our first guest, Susan Crumiller, is the ultimate leader to kick off this series: a passionate advocate for change as the founder of feminist litigation firm Crumiller. Susan talks us through her personal journey – from spiky-haired teenage wrestler, to starting her own law firm when she faced mistreatment at work after having her second child. Along the way, she shines a light on what it looks like to use your own privilege to advocate for others. Best of all, Susan spoke to us on the heels of a huge win in a race and sex discrimination trial with an all-woman trial team (you can read more about that here: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/26/nyregion/equinox-settlement-discrimination.html) – but also reminds us that there's still plenty of work to be done. We'd love to hear from you! Drop us a line at thehearing@tr.com to tell us your thoughts on the TWLL Takeover, to share your ideas for guests and topics, or just to say hi. You can find out more about TWLL here: https://legalsolutions.thomsonreuters.co.uk/blog/transforming-womens-leadership-law/
We first met Kaely McDevitt in Fredericksburg, Texas, out at Roam Ranch, and within the first few minutes of talking it was clear that she presented a wealth of knowledge on women's health that we really wanted to tap into for our audience. We are currently experiencing some pretty startling numbers when it comes to both men's and women's fertility, and so much of it has to do with diet and lifestyle. In the last 70 years, women's fertility has decreased by 50%, and it's estimated that in vetro fertilization is supposed to double from 2018 to 2026 to a $36bn industry. The fertility crisis is truly a food and lifestyle crisis, and we dove deep into these topics with Kaely to learn more about what women can do in order to take back their fertility and hormone health. While synonymous with status and romance, diamonds have also been linked to controversy, colonialism and conflict. Kim Chakanetsa talks to two women whose lives have been shaped and transformed by the diamond industry in Botswana and Namibia. Anna Marie Johnson was paralysed at the age of eight. Reliant on a wheelchair, she missed out on completing her education. She's found a new lease of life and renewed ambition as part of a diverse workforce at Andre Messika in Windhoek, Namibia. Naseem Lahri is the first woman, and the first female citizen of Botswana, to run a diamond mine in the country. She says she's a product of diamond mining through the funding the industry puts into education in her country and that she's delighted to be part of the process giving back to the local community. The Return to Embodiment: consciousness, culture, creativity and flourishing
In this conversation, I am speaking with Alicia Patterson. Alicia is a dance/movement therapist, a somatic therapist and a massage therapist trained in abdominal and pelvic massage. Deep wounding exists in this area, both personal and collective. The womb and the root have been exploited, neglected, and denied education and support. Shame too often silences desperately needed conversations, and teaches people to over-ride, endure and numb rather than respect, own or understand their own body cues. In this personal interview, Alicia traces the origins of her interest in this work, shares about her own resistance to stepping into touch work, and acknowledges the ongoing challenge of providing this desperately needed care, which falls on the fringes of several fields of practice. Alicia's approach to working with massage clients draws upon all her skills as a somatic therapist so that the psychology of embodied consent becomes an opportunity to dismantle the shame and reaccess the wonder of this region. In this episode, Chirag Chadha (VP, Elevation Capital) speaks to Minu Margeret (Founder and CEO, Bliss Club) on Bliss Club's journey of transforming women's active lifestyle wear in India. Founded in 2020, amidst the COVID 19 pandemic, Bliss Club started out as a community for women who move. The community helped Minu uncover deep insights into the gaps in the space and led to the realization that women in India are extremely underserved by incumbent activewear brands, which she then set out to solve with the brand. In a short period of time, the brand has scaled rapidly while maintaining best-in-class NPS and retention metrics. Elevation partnered with the company as the first investor at the Seed stage by leading the $2.5 Mn round and deepened its commitment to the company by investing super pro-rata in the recently announced $15 Mn Series A. Listen to Minu as she walks us through her early days, the importance of and learnings from community & team-building in the company's journey, Bliss Club's framework for evaluating opportunities, dealing with self-doubt as a solo founder, and the opportunity that lies ahead for the brand.
We all have things that we wanted to be and could have changed along the way. Our stories do not have to define us. The clothes that you wear can change also, they do not have to define us and stay the same. Love this quote, " Let go of the stories". Solita Roberts is the creator of Style To Impact, an image consulting platform. She teaches women entrepreneurs and professionals how to ditch the boring corporate uniform and adopt a more self-expressive wardrobe that empowers them, influences others, and has a bigger impact on their career or business. Solita believes that if more women show up in a confident and purpose-driven way, dreaming bigger, raising our voices for what matters, and becoming leaders in the companies we work and the communities we serve, we will change the status quo. If not for ourselves but for our daughter; because if they can see themselves in us, they can dream without limits. It's a fact that we need more women to step up, take on leadership roles, change the way the world sees us, and in most cases, how we see ourselves. Solita is deeply passionate about transforming women's confidence through their wardrobes. It's what she calls Women Empowerment Through Style. Solita started Style To Impact to help women create the life and success they desire by developing a personal style that showcases who they are, communicates their values, and aligns with the IMPACT they're destined to make. Without compromising on their femininity and individuality. Before launching her business, Solita worked in the banking and finance industry for over 15 years, holding certificates in Risk Analysis and Management, Credit Analysis and Lending, and Wealth Management from the University of the West Indies. In today's episode of Toxin Terminator, join your host Aimee Carlson and her partner at Transforming Women's Health, Naomi Damask, as they discuss their personal stories of overcoming their health obstacles and living their best life! Naomi Damask is a certified holistic health coach and nine years ago heard the three dreaded words no one wants to hear. "You have cancer." Not only did she have one tumor, but she had 2 invasive tumors. Naomi was in her 30's with no family history of breast cancer and felt she was in good health because she was active as a runner and not overweight. She thought she was eating right and doing all the right things. The diagnosis made her examine her lifestyle. Naomi had to take an honest look at what role she played in her cancer. She looked at her medical history, her social life and her mental health. She learned how to be her own advocate in her cancer and health journey. Today, she has no evidence of cancer and is healthier now than she has ever been. This journey made her realize that there is little to no education for women on a preventative lifestyle and it is now her mission to help women learn simple changes they can make for optimal health. We share the four basic concepts behind how to truly heal the body when all else has failed and the ONE thing that is hidden in your home that is the cause of it all! You'll learn the crazy way she ended up majoring in Computer Science, hear some moving success stories of some of the Code to Inspire students, and find out what's the first thing the incredibly hospitable Afghan families offer when a guest walks in the door. It's an eye-opening, heartening episode that will show you a new way to view Afghanistan that's more beautiful and rich than you could ever imagine. I hope you enjoy.
Many of us would agree that a more diverse organization creates a more thriving organization. And research has proven that more diverse leadership teams and employee groups are more innovative and creative, perform better and also make better decisions. The questions become, how do you create a more diverse team? How do you catapult diversity within your own organization? In our conversation today with Sheila Murphy, we will answer these questions and talk about Sheila's 5 Pillars of a More Diverse Environment. We also discuss the structural and emotional intelligence barriers to achieving a more diverse, thriving organization, as well as the benefits that companies can reap when they have more diverse leadership. Key Takeaways:Businesses that have diverse teams outperform and are more creative than homogeneous teams. When people are not progressing the same, it is often because they aren't getting the same information or types of assignments. I love that magical moment when I'm diving into depths of conversation on a topic I'm passionate about only to discoer kindship with a likeminded sister. Meeting Alexis was like hanging out with someone I've known forever. As seen in FOX, Thrive Global, Entertainment Tonight, and more, Alexis Artin is a leading Success Coach, international speaker, a writer trained in neuro-linguistic programming, and a master embodiment teacher—fully immersed in the DeMartini Method. Having spent the past two decades propelling people towards their personal and professional best, Alexis is a woman transforming women. After working with many A-list celebrities across the board, in television and film, Alexis transitioned her passion and skillset for fostering potential and obtaining results in the world of self-development and transformation. She worked side-by-side with many of the most revered thought leaders bringing personal growth to the global stage. Alexis was the driving force behind expanding one of the largest and most respected female empowerment companies, which inspired her to channel her expertise into creating a coaching practice serving clients worldwide. Alexis teaches others to embrace their knowing, connecting mind, body, heart, and soul. Her powerful coaching gives her clients true and lasting transformation from the inside out. An ICF-certified professional coach and Energy Leadership Master Practitioner, Alexis is also co-founder of FreeBody™ Practice and a hypnotherapist. In studying with Dr. John Demartini, one concept he teaches is the paradoxical nature of the soul and the body as complementary opposites. That the soul chose the body to have an embodied experience, but the body is like an animal operating at a base level. The goal is to integrate our “opposites,” our soul and body, by being present and in alignment with both, and tapping into and re-membering is a constant practice. Our bodies are designed to tell us when we are not in alignment - and once cued, we can reconnect. The breath is a tool, but the mind and the heart are the bridge between the body and the soul. They will align us, or they will throw us out of alignment. When we are very young most of our programming is set because when we don't have resources, we are powerless, and we are then thrust into a world where we have to live by the values of the people caring for us. Empowerment is about choice, period. Empowerment is about our ability to choose at any given moment. Awareness is our superpower. Habitual change happens in 21 days. It's about where we've been asleep in our lives and where we want to awaken. It is being in the practice of the inquiry and at peace in our lives through the body.
