The South Garland High School alum played a pair of his collegiate seasons in Texas and started the charity "Hustle with Hart" in South Dallas, which brings in current NBA and professional players to speak to kids about basketball, education and life.Hart, a Dallas native, has coached for five seasons following a 10-year professional playing career. He joins the Mustangs after recent stints at New Mexico State (2023-24) and Kansas State (2022-23 – NCAA Elite Eight). He also coached at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (2020-22 – 2022 Elite Eight) and the London Lighting of NBL Canada (2019-20).He served as the assistant coach for player development at New Mexico State in 2023-24. Hart tracked individual player progress for Head Coach Jason Hooten, helping Femi Odukale earn All-Conference USA selection. At Kansas State, the Wildcats made an NCAA Elite Eight run, going 26-10 and finishing tied for third in the Big 12. While in Manhattan, Kansas, he learned from Head Coach, Jerome Tang, who was selected as the Werner Ladder Naismith Men's College Coach of the Year as well as the Big 12 Coach of the Year. Hart's role in developing the Wildcat guards helped K-State set the single-season mark for assists (611) while placing second in single-season points (2,742). He worked directly with All-American and All-Big 12 First Team selections Markquis Nowell and Keyontae Johnson, assisting them to become the first Kansas State duo to be named to the AP All-America team in the same season.Prior to accepting a job with K-State, Hart served two seasons as a student assistant coach for Head Coach Clif Carroll at Division III Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas, where he finished his bachelor's degree in general studies in May 2022. During his time at Mary Hardin-Baylor, the Crusaders posted a combined 44-7 overall record, including a 28-3 mark and a trip to the NCAA Division III Elite Eight in 2021-22. It marked the school's third-ever trip to the national quarterfinals and the first NCAA Tournament since 2013. Following his playing days, he started his coaching career on the staff of the London Lightning – a Canadian professional team based in Ontario. Prior to the stoppage of the 2019-20 season, Hart helped lead the Lightning to a 15-9 overall record. As a player, Hart traveled the professional circuit for 10 years for teams on four different continents (Africa, Asia, North America and South America), including a two-year stint playing for Frayles De Guasave in CIBACOPA, the top league in Mexico. His collegiate career concluded at McMurry in Abilene, Texas, in 2009-10 where he averaged 20.6 points and 9.0 rebounds to lead the War Hawks to a 17-9 record and a trip to the American Southwest Conference Tournament. He was named the ASC West Division Newcomer of the Year and was a member of the All-South Region and First Team All-ASC teams. His 536 points in 2009-10 still rank 20th on the school's single season scoring list.Hart started his college playing career at McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas, in 2007-08, averaging 12.0 points and 3.0 assists as the Highlanders went 18-8 and made an appearance in the 2008 Region V Tournament. He then transferred to Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, averaging 5.2 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.Hart and his wife, Latrice, have six children: Angel, Kamiya, Kershauna, Jaden, Johnny and Demorie. To View This Episode- https://youtu.be/eS9BNPDxKto#SMU #basketball #whoknewinthemoment #philfriedrich #Jeremiehart

Today is the Sunday before the Feast of Theophany (or Epiphany), when we celebrate Christ's baptism in the river Jordan and the revelation that He is truly the Son of God. His divinity is made manifest and openly displayed at His baptism when the voice of the Father declares, “You are my beloved Son” and the Holy Spirit descends upon Him in the form of a dove. Theophany shows us that Jesus Christ, who was born in the flesh for our salvation at Christmas, is not merely a great religious teacher or moral example. He is truly God—a member of the Holy Trinity– and His salvation permeates His entire creation, including the water of the river Jordan. Through Christ's and our baptism, we become participants in the holy mystery of our salvation, for He restores to us the robe of light which our first parents lost when they chose pride and self-centeredness over obedience and communion. He enters the Jordan to restore Adam and Eve, and all their children, to the dignity of those who bear the image and likeness of God.
As we conclude our preparation for celebrating the Lord's Nativity, we must resist the temptation to corrupt this blessed season into an excuse for glorifying ourselves in any way. Instead, we must allow our hopes for whatever we want in this life to be called into question by the God-Man, Who was born in such strange circumstances to fulfill a kingdom not of this world that stands in prophetic judgment over all our agendas, preferences, and desires. We must learn at Christmas to hope only in Him.
When Jesus Christ was teaching in a synagogue on the Sabbath, he saw a woman who was bent over and could not straighten up. She had been that way for eighteen years. The Lord said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your infirmity.” When He laid hands on her, she was healed. When the woman stood up straight again, she glorified God. As was often the case when the Savior healed on the Sabbath day, there were religious leaders eager to criticize Him for working on the legally mandated day of rest. He responded by stating the obvious: People do what is necessary to take care of their animals on the Sabbath. “So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?” Then “all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by Him.” By restoring the woman in this way Christ showed that He is truly “Lord of the Sabbath” and that “the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” (Mark 2:27-28)

As we welcome Christ into our lives and world at His Nativity, we must remain focused. There is no shortage of distractions this time of year that appeal to our passions and threaten to convince us that there are matters more important than accepting His gracious invitation to enter fully into the joy of the banquet of the Kingdom of Heaven. The Savior calls us to embrace our true vocation not only during divine services or in the eschatological future, but in every moment of our lives.
MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Dec 30th Publish Date: Dec 29th Commercial: Henssler :15 From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Saturday, December 30th and Happy 87th Birthday to HOF pitcher Sandy Koufax. ***12.30.23 - BIRTHDAY - SANDY KOUFAX*** I'm Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Cobb Unemployment Drops Below 3% Kennesaw Council Newcomer Ready to Take on Wildman's Civil War Surplus Cobb Civil War Round Table Examines Gen. Joseph E. Johnston All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Cobb Unemployment Drops Below 3% In November, Cobb County's unemployment rate dropped to 2.8%, down from 3.1% in October but higher than 2.4% in November 2022. The county's labor force increased by 295, with 431,345 employed and 12,226 unemployed. The rise in unemployment is attributed to individuals re-entering the workforce post-COVID-19. Economist Roger Tutterow notes that the increased unemployment rate isn't concerning if job cuts aren't occurring, highlighting a significant increase in employed workers. Marietta's November unemployment rate was 2.7%, while Smyrna's remained at 3.2%. Cobb County's unemployment rate is lower than Atlanta's (3.1%) and Georgia's (3.4%), both below the national rate of 3.7%. STORY 2: Kennesaw Council Newcomer Ready to Take on Wildman's Civil War Surplus Madelyn Orochena, newly elected to Kennesaw City Council, aims to close Wildman's Civil War Surplus, a Confederate-themed store in the city's downtown. Orochena, who views the store as a hindrance to progress, plans to pursue legal action or code enforcement to shut it down. While previous blight complaints were dismissed, Orochena, an arts enthusiast, hopes to transform the downtown into a vibrant destination with a diverse range of shops. She initiated a mural installation near Wildman's, emphasizing her commitment to public art. Orochena also advocates for pedestrian safety, affordable housing, and the city's overall growth and improvement. STORY 3: Cobb Civil War Round Table Examines Gen. Joseph E. Johnston Historian Richard McMurry discussed Gen. Joseph E. Johnston at a meeting of the Civil War Round Table of Cobb County. McMurry's latest book, "The Civil Wars of General Joseph E. Johnston," provides a critical analysis of Johnston's campaigns during the Civil War. Johnston, once considered a premier Confederate general, faced challenges defending Atlanta against Gen. William T. Sherman. McMurry's research debunked long-held myths about Johnston, revealing his strategic shortcomings and conflicts with fellow officers. The discussion delved into Johnston's Atlanta campaign, which ultimately resulted in Atlanta's fall to the Union Army led by Sherman. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: ESOG – TEDS STORY 4: No. 2: Democratic Cobb Commissioners Defy State by Drawing Their Own District Lines The second-ranking local story of 2023 in Cobb County involves a redistricting controversy that unfolded during the first Board of Commissioners meeting. The Democratic majority, leveraging Georgia's home rule powers, replaced the state-approved commission district map with its own, challenging the legality of the move. Republican Commissioners JoAnn Birrell and Keli Gambrill abstained from voting, leading to their removal from the dais. The dispute centers on whether Georgia counties can independently draw district maps. A lawsuit, initiated by Gambrill and continued by Cobb residents Catherine and David Floam, challenges the county's map, seeking a declaration of its unconstitutionality and validation of the legislature's map. The court is expected to issue a ruling soon. STORY 5: No. 3: Cobb School Board Map Thrown into Question by Lawsuit The third-ranked local story of 2023 in Cobb County involves a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the Cobb Board of Education's districts. The lawsuit alleged an unconstitutional racial gerrymander, leading to a federal judge's order for the General Assembly to draw new districts by January 10. The judge issued a preliminary injunction, preventing future elections using the current school board map. The school district, which spent over $1.3 million defending the map, appealed the injunction to the 11th Circuit of Appeals. The contentious issue revolves around accusations of packing and bleaching voters based on race, with the school board's Republican majority drawing the map after the 2020 census. We'll be back in a moment Break: DRAKE – INGLES 6 STORY 6: Judge upholds new Georgia congressional, legislative maps U.S. District Judge Steve Jones ruled that federal judges lack the authority to redistribute political power between parties, upholding Georgia's new legislative and congressional maps. The maps were redrawn during a special session following lawsuits alleging Voting Rights Act violations. Jones ordered additional Black-majority districts, aiming for Democratic gains. Despite legislative leaders crafting maps to maintain Republican advantages, Jones ruled that partisan decisions alone don't violate the Voting Rights Act. He upheld the new maps, including the elimination of a coalition district, deeming it moot. Rep. Lucy McBath plans to run in the new Black-majority district, emphasizing the importance of voters' will. STORY 7: No. 4: Books, Bans and 'Good and Evil' The culture wars hit Cobb and Marietta school districts as book bans ignited tensions. Cobb Schools Superintendent Chris Ragsdale fired teacher Katie Rinderle for reading "My Color is Purple" to students. Despite protests, the Cobb Board of Education upheld Rinderle's termination, prompting an appeal to the Georgia Board of Education. In August, Ragsdale removed "Flamer" and "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" for "sexually explicit content." Marietta Superintendent Grant Rivera followed suit, sparking protests. Both superintendents faced criticism and support for their decisions amid a broader debate on book censorship and education. On the last couple of Sundays, our gospel readings have reminded us what not to do if we want to prepare to welcome Christ into our lives and world at His Nativity. The rich fool was so focused on money and possessions that he completely neglected the state of his soul. The rich young ruler walked away in sadness when it became clear that he loved his wealth more than God and neighbor. The weeks before Christmas are the most commercialized time of the year when we are all bombarded with messages that the good life is primarily about having a lot of money and being able to buy whatever we want. Since the Lord warned so clearly of the folly of giving our hearts to the false god of riches, it is sadly ironic that the celebration of His Nativity so often occurs in ways that contradict the blessedness of His Kingdom.

As we continue to prepare to welcome Christ at His Nativity, we must keep our focus on becoming like those who first received Him with joy. That includes the Theotokos, whose Entrance into the Temple, where she prepared to become His Living Temple, we celebrated last week. That includes unlikely characters like the Persian astrologers or wise men, certainly Gentiles, who traveled such a long distance to worship Him. What better news could there have been than that the Prince of Peace was coming “to preach good news to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord”? (Lk. 4:18-19) As we sing during these weeks of Advent, “Dance for joy, O earth, on hearing the gladsome tidings; with the Angels and the shepherds now glorify Him Who is willing to be gazed on as a young Child Who before the ages is God.”

It is worth asking what we want to achieve by practicing our faith. Why do we come to church, pray, fast, give to the needy, forgive our enemies, confess our sins, and otherwise struggle to reorient our lives toward God? Perhaps we do these things because we want to put God in our debt so that He will do our will. Maybe we want to become socially respectable, making ourselves look virtuous in our own eyes and in those of our neighbors. It could also be the case that we want to distinguish ourselves from our neighbors, especially those we do not like, presenting ourselves as more pious and moral than we think they are. Of course, these are all distortions of true Christian faith, but the real test of our faith is not simply in what we generally want from religion, but especially in how we relate to the Lord when we face deep challenges that break our hearts and threaten to lead us into despair.
0:00 Intro 30:00 Wrap-up
It is terribly tragic when people fall into the delusion of thinking that they love God and neighbor, when in reality they are using religion to serve only themselves and the false gods of this world. One symptom of doing so is to narrow down the list of people who count as our neighbors to the point that we excuse ourselves from serving Christ in all who bear His image and likeness. When we do so, we disregard not only them, but our Lord Himself, the God-Man born for the salvation of all. Our actions then reveal that we are not truly united with Him because we seek to justify ourselves by serving nothing but our own vain imaginations.
There is perhaps no more powerful example of our need for Christ's healing of our souls than that contained in today's gospel reading. A rich man with the benefit of the great spiritual heritage of Abraham, Moses, and the prophets had become such a slave to gratifying his desires for indulgence in pleasure that he had become completely blind to his responsibility to show mercy to Lazarus, a miserable beggar who wanted only crumbs and whose only comfort was when dogs licked his open sores. The rich man's life revolved around wearing the most expensive clothes and enjoying the finest food and drink, even as he surely stepped over or around Lazarus at the entrance to his home on a regular basis and never did anything at all to relieve his suffering.

Break 1: Peggy Slappy STORY 1: Gwinnett County's Veteran and Family Services Center Helps Vets Navigate Process Of Getting Help The Gwinnett County Veterans and Family Services Center in Lawrenceville, Georgia, is providing essential assistance to veterans, offering guidance on navigating the Veterans Administration and accessing mental health services. The center, established in collaboration with Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, aims to address the needs of veterans and their families. The facility has expanded space compared to its previous location, and Gwinnett County Commissioner Jasper Watkins emphasized the importance of creating a comfortable environment for veterans to decompress. The center recently hosted a Stand Down event, providing veterans and their families with information, health screenings, and support services. STORY 2: Piedmont Eastside Recognizes Gwinnett Fire Supervisor As A Hero Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Service Lt. Sam Ballouk has been recognized as a "Hero" by Piedmont Eastside Medical Center for his commitment to community safety. Ballouk, who serves as the A-Shift medical supervisor, has extensive experience in the fire department and worked as a paramedic for Walton County EMS. The recognition is part of Piedmont Eastside's First Friday Hero program, which acknowledges first responders exceeding their duty. Ballouk expressed his dedication to the EMS field, emphasizing the importance of treating every patient with respect and fostering collaboration between fire, EMS, and hospitals. STORY 3: Georgia Transportation Commissioner Russell McMurry Says State's Work With Gwinnett County On Smart Corridors Is The Future Of Travel Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Russell McMurry discussed future transportation plans during a presentation to the Gwinnett Chamber. Emphasizing the importance of technology, McMurry highlighted smart corridors in Gwinnett County, where fiber optic connectivity to traffic signals aims to communicate information to vehicles. The projects on Buford Highway, Arcado Road, and State Route 120 involve underground infrastructure, making the changes noninvasive for drivers. McMurry anticipates increased technology integration, allowing cars to receive traffic signal information and potentially act independently based on safety parameters. The initiatives align with Georgia's commitment to advancing transportation technology. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back Break 2: MOG – TOM WAGES – ESOG STORY 4: Editorial: Toxic politics envelop noble AIDS program The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), initiated by President George W. Bush in 2003, faces challenges as some lawmakers allege the Biden administration of promoting abortion in the program. PEPFAR has played a crucial role in combating AIDS globally, saving an estimated 25 million lives and preventing infections in infants. Despite enjoying bipartisan support in the past, recent claims have delayed reauthorization and hindered fund disbursement. Critics argue that the allegations lack substance, and PEPFAR's focus remains on HIV prevention and treatment. The delay in funding could impact the program's effectiveness and raise questions about the nation's commitment to global health initiatives. STORY 5: Special toothpaste could save lives of people with peanut allergies A specialized toothpaste containing tiny amounts of peanut could offer a breakthrough in treating peanut allergies. The toothpaste, part of Oral Mucosal Immunotherapy (OMIT), aims to build patients' immunity by exposing them to small amounts of the allergen over time. In a trial, all participants tolerated the highest dose of peanut toothpaste without severe reactions. OMIT could be a safe and convenient option for adults with food allergies, supporting continued development, according to allergy expert Dr. William Berger. The results encourage further exploration of the toothpaste's potential, particularly in pediatric populations. We'll be back in a moment Break 3: DTL – INGLES 7 - JACKSON EMC STORY 6: Kentucky's Constitution still allows for slavery. A group of teens is pushing to change it The existence of an exception clause in Section 25 of the Kentucky Constitution that allows slavery and involuntary servitude as punishment for crime. The clause, similar to the 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, has raised concerns, prompting efforts to remove it through a constitutional amendment. Members of the South Elkhorn Christian Church youth group testified before the legislature's Joint Commission on Race and Access to Opportunity Committee, urging the removal of the exception clause. Advocates argue that the clause has historical ties to discriminatory practices and systemic racism, emphasizing the need for constitutional change. STORY 7: Beer industry enters fray in battle over rum tax benefits The beer lobby is challenging the renewal of a tax benefit for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, known as the "rum cover-over," claiming it unfairly subsidizes rum-producing competitors. The tax dispute arises amid broader tensions between the beer and spirits industries over the taxation of new alcoholic beverage options. The beer lobby argues that the rum cover-over program benefits large liquor companies and calls for a reevaluation of the program to ensure the territories receive appropriate assistance. The disagreement adds complexity to the potential renewal of the rum cover-over as part of a year-end tax package. We'll have final thoughts after this. It seems there can be little doubt that Division III football is at its best on a Saturday afternoon when the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference is playing its conference games. They might draw 20,000-plus fans, they might go to double overtime, but whatever the weekend, it always seems at least one or two of the games is going to be entertaining, if not epic. But Division III is also at its best when it is forward-looking and innovative. When a university for the Deaf and hard of hearing can work with AT&T on a project to help level the playing field for a team that finds it hard to call plays.
