There were two musical synthesizers that revolutionized the way music was made in the late 1970's and all through the 80's, the Synclavier and the Fairlight. The least expensive model cost the equivalent of a small house, and the most expensive model was the equivalent of a smallish mansion. More similar than they were different, they would help some of the greatest musicians of the time to create their biggest hits, and we delve into it here. We also mention their spiritual predecessor--and Todd's favorite instrument--the Chamberlin, as well as their tiny concurrent sibling, the Casio SK-1.Connect with us at tapeheadspod.com.RELATED LINKS:Our Synclavier vs. Fairlight playlist, on SpotifyKevin Malony Synclavier documentary, on YouTubeThe Fairlight Story, on YouTubeMellodrama, the Mellotron/Chamberlin documentary, trailer, on YouTube

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

Composition by Lifesize Cardboard Cutout.  "My original idea was simply guitars that sound like electric razors / electric razors that sound like guitars. I was envisaging something very buzzy and noisy, but as I got the sounds together it mutated into something else. I took the original recording and treated it in a couple of different ways, as well as grabbing a sample to play on an old Casio SK-1. Everything else is guitars of some nature apart from the simple electronic beat." This is part of the Obsolete Sounds project, the world's biggest collection of disappearing sounds and sounds that have become extinct – remixed and reimagined to create a brand new form of listening. It's 1 hour and 20 minutes of pokemon blue nuzlocke, and then the rest is the third chapter of Moominvalley Midwinter. The samples towards the end are from my Casio SK-5. This episode featured a little snippet of the Devo song Jocko Homo, and as usual there were also appearances made by a Pete Seeger banjo medley, Six ways to Sunday by The Drones, and Divers by Joanna Newsom. There might be one other thing too, but I forget what... Oh fuck! I remember. Sleepwalk as covered by online guitar and banjo tutor Rob Bourassa also made an appearance for no real reason. That's definitely it all now, yeah.

Huron is the project of NYC / Pennsylvania-based musician Johnny Lancia. He’s been releasing slowly drifting sounds for over 10 years now, using modular synthesizers, obsolete samplers and tape loops to craft his blissed out drones. This piece was recorded especially for Data Cult Audio and was composed using the Tascam 424mkiii cassette four track as an instrument loaded with tape loops painstakingly created by hand. Recordings of analog synthesizers are warped and twisted with each pass of audio. Casio SK-1 was also present. BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the @djromes1 #interview session! We can’t say how excited we were about this session. From the history with the Lootpack, his talent behind the boards and the video game habit - the #DJRomes resume 2nd to none. Let’s just lay it out there like this - Romes and his entire crew are the foundation of a sound and vibe that folks are STILL trying to replicate today, and the resume reflects it. We get into all the new stuff like his 5th Beatle-esque role in #Gangrene with #Alchemist & #OhNo, mixing and mastering records for your favorite hip-hop artists and the adjustments one has to make sonically for music in the phone / tablet world. It wouldn’t be a Southern Vangard interview unless we took a trip down memory lane - how Romes met #Madlib & #Wildchild, making beats with a Casio SK-1 & cassette deck combo, not to mention how they hooked up with the Alkaholiks. Did I hear it correctly - #Lootpack were almost signed to #Loud #Records around the same time as #WuTang & #MobbDeep?! Did Romes mention a Lootpack reunion show…and maybe a new record?!
