It makes sense that if you want to cut down on the amount of spam email you get, just unsubscribe from those emails. WAIT! That could make things worse. There is a better way to handle spam emails, and I begin this episode by explaining how. https://www.yahoo.com/news/warning-hitting-unsubscribe-unwanted-emails-115900557.html Predicting the future is a losing game most of the time. Still, a lot of influential people spend a lot of time and money trying to do it. People forecast where the stock market is going, they predict trends in fashion, technology and everything else. It makes you wonder if all that effort and money trying to predict the future actually helps to make it happen. So why is the future so unpredictable? What forces do shape the future? Joining me to discuss this is Glenn Adamson, former director of the Museum of Arts and Design, New York. He has held appointments as Senior Scholar at the Yale Center for British Art and he is the author of the book, A Century of Tomorrows: How Imagining the Future Shapes the Present (https://amzn.to/442HOfb). People have been floating the idea of a 4-day workweek for over 60 years. Yet it is still not the norm. Why hasn't it caught on? Is it a good idea? Will it ever be a real thing? Here with some interesting insight into the 4-day workweek is Juliet Schor. She is an economist, and professor of sociology at Boston College. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, People and 60 Minutes. She is also the author of a book called Four Days a Week: The Life-Changing Solution for Reducing Employee Stress, Improving Well-Being, and Working Smarter (https://amzn.to/4jQSvr0). There are a lot of weight loss programs and strategies available for people. But what if there was one simple, common sense, easy to do tactic that is proven to help people lose weight effectively? There is. It so simple. And I will tell you exactly how to do it. https://www.ornish.com/zine/proven-benefits-keeping-food-journal/ Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this episode of The Missing Secret Podcast, John and Kelly discuss the concept of working smarter not harder. Kelly is a great example of doing this. Recently she went to one of her competitors in the recruiting space. That is more successful than she is. Visited their offices with a couple of her team members. They learned so much. Now they're in the process of implementing what they learned in their own business. Now that is working smarter not harder. John then talks about the difference in his life of working smarter in his 50s versus working harder in his 30s and 40s. What a difference. In his 50s he was highly organized with a system where he planned his day the night before, time blocked his days, and identified his top three priorities. Then he was deep thinking two times a week. Thirdly he was growing and growing strategically every week relative to what you want to accomplish. And lastly he understood how the human mind works. And it gave him immense control over his life. None of that was happening in his 30s and 40s. And that's why he was able to 25X his income in his 50s over what he had made in his 30s and 40s. Today most people don't really think that deeply about the concept of working smarter. And when people talk about it, they're not really specific about it. Well it's simple. Be highly organized, be deep thinking two times a week. Be growing with a system, and understand how the human mind works. And appreciate the profound ramifications of 95% of your daily thoughts and actions being unconscious. You have to gain control over those unconscious daily actions. Otherwise you're playing the game of life at 5% your potential.Buy John's book, THE MISSING SECRET of the Legendary Book Think and Grow Rich : And a 12-minute-a-day technique to apply it here.About the Hosts:John MitchellJohn's story is pretty amazing. After spending 20 years as an entrepreneur, John was 50 years old but wasn't as successful as he thought he should be. To rectify that, he decided to find the “top book in the world” on SUCCESS and apply that book literally Word for Word to his life. That Book is Think & Grow Rich. The book says there's a SECRET for success, but the author only gives you half the secret. John figured out the full secret and a 12 minute a day technique to apply it.When John applied his 12 minute a day technique to his life, he saw his yearly income go to over $5 million a year, after 20 years of $200k - 300k per year. The 25 times increase happened because John LEVERAGED himself by applying science to his life. His daily technique works because it focuses you ONLY on what moves the needle, triples your discipline, and consistently generates new business ideas every week. This happens because of 3 key aspects of the leveraging process.John's technique was profiled on the cover of Time Magazine. He teaches it at the University of Texas' McCombs School of Business, which is one the TOP 5 business schools in the country. He is also the “mental coach” for the head athletic coaches at the University of Texas as well.Reach out to John at john@thinkitbeit.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-mitchell-76483654/Kelly HatfieldKelly Hatfield is an entrepreneur at heart. Podcast Episode NotesWelcome to Outside the Treatment RoomThe podcast about the business side of the beauty industry. I'm your host, Connie Holm.Episode Title: Are You Earning Less Than Minimum Wage? IntroductionWelcome back to Outside the Treatment Room! Today we're tackling a tough topic that might make you a little uncomfortable: Are you unknowingly earning less than minimum wage?In this episode, I'll break down the numbers, explain why this happens, and give you actionable tips to shift from working hard to working smart. So grab a coffee, let's get real, and let's talk money! Many solo estheticians feel like they're earning great money because they're booked solid and bringing in cash. But after expenses, rent, taxes, and time spent on unpaid tasks, the reality can be shocking.Example: If you charge $100 for a facial, but products, rent, and insurance eat into your profits, your real income per hour could be closer to minimum wage (or even less!).Reflection Question: When's the last time you calculated your real hourly rate?If you haven't, don't worry—we're going to do the math together. Here's how to calculate your hourly rate:Gross Income: Total monthly earnings (e.g., $4,000).Expenses: Subtract rent, products, insurance, taxes, and supplies (e.g., $2,000).Net Income: What's left ($4,000 - $2,000 = $2,000).Divide by Hours Worked: If you worked 160 hours, that's $2,000 / 160 = $12.50/hour.This number has to cover everything: sick days, health benefits, and retirement. If your hourly rate surprises you, don't worry—I'm here to help you fix it.Undercharging for Services: If you haven't raised prices in years, rising costs (like inflation) mean you're earning less. Example: Gloves that once cost $6 now cost $22—you must pass these increases on to clients.Too Much Discounting: Promotions are great occasionally, but constant discounts devalue your work.Hidden Expenses: Fancy packaging, unused software, or premium products can drain profits.Unpaid Time: You're also your own receptionist, marketer, and cleaner. Those hours count!Does any of this sound familiar? If so, let's focus on solutions. Here are 5 actionable steps to increase your income:Raise Your Prices: If it's been more than a year, start small with $5-$10 per service. Your expertise has value, and clients expect increases.Streamline Services: Focus on high-profit treatments that take less time and product. Stop offering unprofitable services.Track Expenses: Audit your expenses. Cancel unused subscriptions, buy in bulk, and optimize your budget. (Example: I use Zoom Premium only for my September laser events and cancel it for the rest of the year.)Charge for Your Time: Enforce no-show fees, cancellation policies, and charge appropriately for consultations.Set Income Goals: Break your monthly income target into weekly and daily benchmarks. As a knowledge worker, you face two challenges. First, you need to take in staggering amounts of information to stay current. Next, you're expected to convert that information into innovative solutions that benefit your team and your company. While expectations for consuming and processing information have changed, most of our mental habits harken back to factory model days. Yet we're ignoring the tremendous power of our human biology, namely, our brains. What if we designed an optimal work style built around key features of the human brain? That's the question Mithu Storoni works to answer in her book, Hyperefficient: Optimize Your Brain to Transform the Way You Work. She likens brain function to a car engine with multiple gears. Then she shares how to best put those gears to work for us, and how best to shift them as circumstances change. It's just the right book – with just the right information – for the age we're living in. Episode Links Uncertainty is Uncomfortable, and Technology Makes It Worse.
