RISK, RANDOMNESS & DEALING WITH UNCERTAINTY.Caspar Berry has led many lives, from screenplay writer, actor and director, to professional poker player, poker commentator and renowned keynote speaker. He also once served as the poker coach to Daniel Craig and the actors in Casino Royale, and beyond coaching others to merely look like they know how to gamble, Caspar believes there are parallels between poker strategies and navigating life's uncertainties. So ante up for an unusually spirited episode of the 3 Questions, 3 Drinks podcast, where Chris toasts Caspar from across the Atlantic to explore the complexities of decision-making, risk, and the role randomness and luck play in our lives.*Listeners Note* I apologize for the uneven sound quality during this episode as it was recorded via a Teams call between two continents. Caspar Berry is a former professional poker player, having been the poker advisor on the James Bond movie Casino Royale. Caspar is now a speaker on risk, not only understanding this area from the principles of the game of poker, but it's underpinned with an economics degree from Cambridge University. In this discussion we talk about the parallels between poker and what we're experiencing through this viral pandemic – and there definitely are some. We talk about how to get good at poker which unveils an array of applicable lessons in terms of probabilities, luck and taking opportunities when they are presented to you. Caspar has a knack of making some unfamiliar concepts feel really accessible – he's a bright guy with whom I've loved chatting to over the years. And if a Las Vegas poker player and advisor on a Bond movie weren't enough Caspar has one of the most fun biographies going – which I will leave him to explain. Show notes Poker and a global pandemic – it is good when people appreciate uncertainty in their lives The importance of cash and savings Caspar's three important messages: The future is uncertain and we are way poorer than we think we are Everything is going to end eventually Insulate yourself against the downside and open yourself up to the upside Risk and decision making; short term versus long term allocation Working as an actor in Byker Grove Learning that poker and business are related, defined by decision making and resource allocation Luck - your short term deviation from your long term expectation as a result of that which you cannot control Olivia Colman & Sacha Baron Cohen – luck Don't play the man, play the cards Casino Royale How to play perfect poker Uncertainty and predicting the future The Ludic fallacy   Links Caspar is on Linkedin at https://www.linkedin.com/in/casparberry/ You can visit Caspar's website at http://www.casparberry.com/ Supporting Champions on Twitter www.twitter.com/support_champs Steve Ingham on Twitter www.twitter.com/ingham_steve Supporting Champions on Linkedin, www.linkedin.com/company/supporting-champions Instagram https://www.instagram.com/supportingchampions/ A reminder if you're keen to pre-register for the next wave of Graduate Membership enrolments then you can do so at https://supportingchampions.co.uk/membership/ If you're looking for some coaching support or some virtual team development help to support you to get to the next level in work, life or sport then take a look at https://supportingchampions.co.uk/coaching-mentoring/ or drop us a note at enquiries@supportingchampions.co.uk then you can sign up for a free consultation to explore which package is right for you.

In the world of high stakes poker, players make critical decisions every 90 seconds without any knowledge of what hand their opponent holds. Each decision could be worth thousands — if not millions — of dollars, and there’s no reward for second place. Do you fold under pressure, or make a calculated bet based on all the risk factors and information you have in hand? In this episode of Adapt or Die, Cambridge-trained economist and former professional poker player Caspar Berry joins Matt Gunn to talk about what it means to make critical decisions under tremendous pressure.

Caspar Berry gives the corporate world a greater understanding of their decision-making process. He shows people that all decisions are investment decisions. Investments of time, money, status, energy, comfort and security made with the intention of getting some kind of long term return. He tries to give people a better understanding of what “risk” is and how it is calculated in its essential form. This calibrated mathematical language allows people to understand, view and critically evaluate their decisions (and those of others) in a new way. He gives an understanding of the psychology of decision making and the cause of risk aversion among humans: i.e. why we are reluctant to embrace short term failures for long term gain. His final objective is to give participants an original and empowering method for using their own natural risk aversion as a motivational tool that can be used to achieve better long term results. And all of this is done using poker as a fun and engaging but completely relevant metaphor throughout. Ian & Caspar discuss; Early days on Byker Grove Becoming an award-winning director Film making The challenges of the film industry The early days in Las Vegas Discovering Poker and becoming a pro player The ROI of risk taking Being prepared to risk it Educated and non-educated risk taking The risks associated with sales leads Low risk & High risk projects If we do this Vs if we never do this Show Sponsors:- Far North Sales & Marketing Far North Sales & Marketing Consultancy are all-encompassing Business Development specialists, our aim is growth, your growth.
