This week we have a very special guest and VERY important musician when it comes to the DNA of our show and one of our bands in particular... We are joined by the incomparable Only Living Witness vocalist Jonah Jenkins. The short lived, but ahead of their time and impactful band existed for only 6 years, managing to release 2 iconic LPs in that time that would become cult classics and contribute to changing the landscape of hardcore music forever. These are personal favorites for the show (and inspired the sound AND name of Twitching Tongues) and we are confident you will walk away from this episode with a new perspective on a band you love, or are new appreciation for one you're just now discovering. Being on the forefront of integrating clean vocals and hardcore, their mark on aggressive music is present to this day. With their debut LP "Prone Mortal Form" just passing it's 30th anniversary, it's finally getting a proper standalone re-release via Man Alive records, as well as their follow up "Innocents" on vinyl for the very first time. SIGNS OF THE SWARM, hailing from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is an American deathcore band that came together in 2014. The group is made up of drummer Bobby Crow, vocalist David Simonich, guitarist Carl Schulz, and bassist Michael Cassese. Over the years, they have delivered four compelling studio albums, with their bludgeoning fifth album, titled "Amongst the Low & Empty," hitting shelves on July 28, 2023, via Century Media Records. In the podcast, David discusses the band's being signed by Century Media, the personal pain and struggles which fueled some of the album's brutal tracks, the upcoming tour with CARNIFEX and much more. Formed in 2004 in Huddersfield, England, EVILE is a prominent thrash metal band with a rich history of line-up changes. Amidst these shifts, drummer Ben Carter has been the sole constant member from the original formation. Presently, the band's lineup includes Carter, the talented lead guitarist and vocalist Ol Drake, bassist Joel Graham, and rhythm guitarist Adam Smith, who took over from Ol Drake's older brother Matt in 2020. EVILE holds a significant place in the thrash metal resurgence of the mid-to-late 2000s, earning high praise from Kerrang! for shouldering the genre's revival. Their impressive discography boasts six studio albums: "Enter the Grave" (2007), "Infected Nations" (2009), "Five Serpent's Teeth" (2011), "Skull" (2013), "Hell Unleashed" (2021), and the recently released "The Unknown" (2023). During the second part of the show, Ol Drake joins us to discuss their latest LP "The Unknown", working with famed METALLICA producer Flemming Rasmussen and the significance of thrash metal as a genre.

“At the very heart of democracy is a contradiction that cannot be resolved, one that has affected free societies from ancient Greece to contemporary America,” write Zac Gershberg and Sean Illing in their new book, “The Paradox of Democracy.” In order to live up to its name, democracy must be open to free communication and expression; yet that very feature opens democracies up to the forces of chaos, fragmentation and demagoguery that undermine them. Historically, this paradox becomes particularly profound during transitions between different communication technologies. “We see this time and again,” Gershberg and Illing write, “media continually evolve faster than politics, resulting in recurring patterns of democratic instability.”For that reason, Gershberg and Illing refer to media ecology — a field dedicated to studying the complex interplay between media, humans and their broader social environments — as “the master political science.” You can't understand a society's politics without understanding the mediums through which its people communicate. Radio and TV and Twitter and TikTok each profoundly shape the way we think, the qualities we look for in our politicians, the way we absorb news, the kind of political discourse we engage in and so much more.Illing's career, in many ways, represents the intersection of these two worlds: He's trained as a political theorist but eventually switched careers to become a journalist; he's currently the interviews writer at Vox, where he hosts the podcast “Vox Conversations” and often writes about the nexus of media and politics. So I invited Illing on the show to talk about his new book alongside some of his other work. We discuss why mid-century media theorists like Marshall McLuhan and Neil Postman are essential for understanding our current political moment, how the mediums through which we communicate — TV, social media, print news — shape us even more deeply than the content we absorb from them, the surprising dangers of “Sesame Street,” why Abraham Lincoln probably never would have won the presidency in the TV era, how revolutions in media technology from the printing press to Facebook have destabilized political systems, how Twitter reshapes the thinking of those who use it, why Illing believes that democracy is fundamentally a “communicative culture” and not a set of rules and institutions, what Donald Trump understood about our media age that the media itself didn't, why Steve Bannon's “flood the zone” media strategy has been so successful, whether it's possible to achieve a healthier version of political discourse given our current technologies and more. This episode contains strong language.Mentioned:“‘Flood the zone with shit': How misinformation overwhelmed our democracy” by Sean Illing“Quantifying partisan news diets in Web and TV audiences” by Daniel Muise, Homa Hosseinmardi, Baird Howland, Markus Mobius, David Rothschild and Duncan J.
