With the instincts of a warrior and the heart of a leader, Mohamed Amin built Camerapix into a sustainable, world class organization covering news, features and producing documentaries with a variety of global networks including the BBC, NBC and Reuters. Today, Salim has continued that tradition by helping educate Africa's youth through the Mohamed Amin Foundation and as a founder of Africa 24 Media, a media platform that was dedicated to positive stories about the culture and history of Africa.Recognized in 2007 as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in Davos, Salim's leadership has been rewarded. Today, Camerapix works in collaboration with production partners throughout Africa, Britain, Europe, Asia and the United States. New African Magazine has recognized Salim as one of the top “100 Most Influential Africans” and has named Salim among their “Top 50 Under 50.” Salim was one of only 150 global leaders invited to President Obama's 2010 summit on Presidential Entrepreneurship in Washington DC.Salim's work as a producer includes the internationally acclaimed feature documentary Mo & Me, the One.org production of Revisiting Korem, and executive producing the award-winning documentary The Sound Man. It is also the first historical book on Africa incorporating Augmented Reality with 12 videos embedded in the pages of the book.Since 2020 Salim has been documenting and preserving Kenya's history through interviews and features, and working on the construction of Kenya's largest history Museum. He refers to his work as a “conservation of history”.In 2024, together with production partner Chip Duncan, Salim co-produced the multi-award-winning documentary Stand Together As One: The Famine. Somebody's Daughter - and the 2018 book and 2022 one-woman show the film is based on – focusses on Zara's personal journey of overcoming early addiction, navigating her life and meeting her birth father after many years and struggles after connecting with her birth mother. The project's true driving force is tofacilitate honest, vulnerable conversations about adoption. Too many people, she says, are ignoring these important issues. In addition to acting and writing, Zara is also a talented singer and songwriter who launched her career in the 80s, appearing in music videos and providing backing vocals on tour with Bob Geldof, Matt Bianco, David Essex and Nick Kamen. While taking some years away from creative endeavors to raise a family, she came back strong in the 2000s, releasing two albums(When The Rain Stops and You. Me & Us) produced by Ted Perlman, whose multi-faceted musical resume includes Whitney Houston, Bob Dylan and Chicago; earning a Best Homegrown Documentary honor for her 2008 film Roots Unknown at the Garden State Film Festival; and publishing in 2008 her first book Mother Me, a compelling memoir about her ongoing struggles as an adoptee now raising a family of her own. A few years later, Zara's song “I'm Legit,” co-written with Darryl McDaniels (DMC of Run-DMC), was a successful single in the adoption world and beyond. In 2014, Zara's one woman show Beneath My Father's Sky, directed by Eliza and Eric Roberts won Best Direction at NYC's United Solo Festival and was performed in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Connecticut and London in 2016. During this era, she was presented with an Angel in Adoption Award by the Congressional Coalition of Adoption Institute. Andrew Dickens: Our kids should know Shakespeare

The draft year 7-13 English curriculum proposes compulsory Shakespeare for senior secondary school students. That's provoked a furious debate about the relevance of Shakespeare in this day and age - Shakespeare is important, but is it essential? Even when I was at secondary school 45 years ago, Shakespeare was not popular. One year we were studying Hamlet. So, the school organised an afternoon matinee of the play at the Mercury Theatre. The boys were so rowdy that a young Michael Hurst commented it was the worst audience he had ever had. We didn't even calm down during the sword fights. That didn't happen when we studied Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman or Thomas Beckett's Murder in the Cathedral. Those plays used language we understood and themes we could relate to. To teach you must engage and much and all as we bemoan the fall of Shakespeare, he's still so strong that his influence on the modern world will not fail. So, what will engage the kids, I don't know. This generation is less engaged than ever - so much so I had to explain who Bob Geldof was to my 26-year-old son. And speaking of which the most engagement I had in English at school was when we studied the lyrics of David Bowie's 'Time' from the Aladdin Sane album. And let's remember that in 2016 Bob Dylan won the Nobel prize in literature. Would anyone mind if he was added to the curriculum? Post script: I see that the new curriculum says that spelling and keyboard lessons for children at intermediate schools should be compulsory - you mean they're not already? How do our kids survive in this modern world?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Is there anybody who doesn't know the name Bob Geldof? Along with the Sex Pistols and the Clash, Geldof and the Boomtown Rats are attributed with changing the face of music. A significant part is due to the Live Aid concert and Geldof's activism – which is part of the reason he's made his way to our shores. Geldof has a couple of dates lined up in New Zealand, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of Live Aid and the 50th anniversary of the Boomtown Rats. The show's called ‘An Evening with Bob Geldof: Songs and Stories from an Extraordinary Life', and it's a slightly different type of show than he normally performs. Geldof told Mike Hosking that it leans more theatrical, with visuals and songs accompanying the storytelling element. “It's not something I'd normally do,” he continued. “In the summer, as you said, the Rats are 50, we do all the big festivals and then we're talking off mic about, y'know, suddenly Bobby Boomtown's in the house." "The sagacious quiet person you're listening to right now becomes something else.” This show is set to be a bit less intense, Geldof jokingly warning people to bring a sleeping bag as the stories may go on for a while. Our special interests are a natural part of who we are and shouldn't have to be earned or justified.* We talk about having a career built around special interests and how This Is The Way for autistic people.* Our special interests help us enter flow states, where we become deeply focused and productive, unlocking creativity and success.* Finally, we discuss how autistic SPINS can foster deep, meaningful connections, creating beautiful mutual friendships where shared passions and understanding strengthen bonds.“[My special interests] were the things that got me through it. I identified more with the fictional world than the real one because friends, family, and fictional characters.” - Matt“Now, why would you wait and watch the whole movie while instead, you could be looking things up on IMDb or Wikipedia and making your own director's cut in your mind?” - Angela“We train our children young. You must train your children in your special interests to increase emotional regulation through special interests. The children we love most accept our special interests as their own. These are the rules.” - Angela“Back in the day, the Internet was limited to the people who were really, really autistic as hell. Because you were like, ‘I absolutely need to talk about Star Wars with somebody. I will find people to talk about Transformers with, all this. And you found your people.” - Matt“We cannot enter a flow state through coercion. We cannot enter a flow state when people say, ‘hey, read this thing'. We cannot squeeze this into our head - partially because of PDA, partially because we just can't do it because that's not how our brains work. But if we have some sort of breadcrumb that gets us interested, we will go all the way and learn everything there is to know about it.” - Matt“When you find the thing that really, really comes together for you, you just kind of fall into it and that becomes your thing.” - Matt“It feels like unlocking a secret code when you meet somebody and you're able to mutually info dump about the thing that you're really passionate about, because you just hype each other up. And it is a type of relationship that I don't think neurotypicals understand.” - MattDid you enjoy this episode?

Bob Geldof is a musician, activist and one of the organizers of Live Aid, the massive 1985 benefit concert that raised millions for famine relief in Ethiopia. Some of the biggest artists and bands of all time came together for that concert — but how did Bob convince them all to give up their time for free on the same day? Ahead of the Toronto opening of “Just For One Day,” a new jukebox musical about Live Aid, Bob sits down with Tom Power to share some of the stories from behind the scenes of Live Aid, including how he got Queen to participate and why David Bowie insisted on the use of some CBC footage as the one condition of him playing.

As she celebrates the release of her extraordinary autobiographical film Somebody's Daughter, Zara Phillips offers up some tough love truths that fly in the face of the often cheery, sanitized way adopted children (and other beings) are depicted in Disney films and other media. From her years of advocacy, studying contemporary sociological research and personal experiences as an adopted person herself, the passionate lifelong advocate for adoptees knows that even well into adulthood, their existential struggles of feeling like outsiders with little known stories of their history and birth parents makes them at least four times more likely to attempt suicide. They are also much more inclined to turn to addiction as a coping mechanism, as Zara did in her teens and early 20s. In addition to acting and writing, Zara is also a talented singer and songwriter who launched her career in the 80s, appearing in music videos and providing backing vocals on tour with Bob Geldof, Matt Bianco, David Essex and Nick Kamen. Her most recent album, released in 2020, is Meditation and Kitkats, and she currently tours and performs with her husband, British folk-rock legend Richard Thompson, who scored Somebody's Daughter.   Want t owatch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

"If I Was" Midge Ure is a one-man highlight machine. The Scottish born Ivor Novello Award winning musician was in the pop band Silk, the post-punk outfit Rich Kids with Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols, the synth band Visage, the rock band Think Lizzy and the new wave band Ultravox. If you were wondering if Ure has range, the answer is: yes. Aside from co-writing Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas with Bob Geldof, helping organize the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute, being the musical director of the Prince's Trust concerts, organizing Live 8 concerts, being appointed the Order of The British Empire, receiving five honorary Doctor of Arts degrees by esteemed universities, and being an Ambassador for Save the Children, Ure has also had a successful solo career, releasing close to ten marvelous albums. Not only that, but he's an author, he's been on Celebrity Master Chef and he turned down an invitation to be in the Sex Pistols. His latest effort is Live at the Royal Albert Hall, a show that was recorded back in April of 2023 and it's just wonderful. In recent years, Ure along with keyboardist Charlie Round-Turner have figured out how to play songs that have a lot of sonic architecture and replicate them in two-man band form. The results are rich and deeply satisfying and Ure will be hitting the road in this Band In A Box format in May for a North American tour. But in the meantime, he's stopped by the podcast for a chat. http://www.midgeure.co.uk www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com) IG: @emberspodcast Bluesky: @emberspodcast

What's up, dudes? Remember Band Aid and its mega-hit “Do They Know It's Christmas?” It spun off countless relief efforts, including Carol Aid 1985. Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas introduced me to this concert, and he's here to talk about its MTV and Music Box broadcast!Carol Aid was a famine relief concert held at the club Heaven in London. MTV and Music Box aired a cut down version, leaving out several acts. In fact, the likes of Magnum, Captain Sensible, and Miquel Brown (to name a few) were cut for time. It's quite unbelievable.Cliff Richard kicked off the broadcast version with “Another Christmas Day,” while John Parr sang “Once in Royal David's City.” Meanwhile, the Fixx pressed for donations and sang “Peace On Earth,” a hidden track from their following album. Subsequently, the event ended with the entire roster singing “Do They Know It's Christmas?” rather heartily.Chris De Burgh? Check. Anita Harris? She was there. Toto Coelo and the Flying Pickets? Got them too, though we have no idea what they sang. Stuart Bruce in conversation with David Eastaugh Stuart Robert Bruce is an English recording engineer. He was the engineer for the recording of the Band Aid's charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas?" on 25 November 1984. Bruce started his career at Trevor Horn's Sarm West Studios. When Horn offered Bob Geldof and Midge Ure the studio free of charge for 24 hours to record the charity single, but was unavailable to produce it, Bruce was approached to engineer and mix what became one of the biggest selling singles ever. With many of the most famous artists of the time participating, and seven film crews in attendance, he worked straight through that day and night. The reputation Bruce gained of being able to get a track down in difficult circumstances later led to him being chosen to engineer the Guitar Trio album by Al Di Meola, Paco de Lucía and John McLaughlin.

The stars have called off their engagement, according to People magazine.  The Wayans family is back in the Scary Movie business  Here's a sentence you probably never expected to hear: Chuck Norris, Vanilla Ice, and Bob Geldof are making a movie called "Zombie Plane". Quentin Tarantino liked the new Joker movie, saying, "I'm just nihilistic enough to kind of enjoy a movie that doesn't quite work as a movie, and that's a big, giant mess to some degree. I didn't find it an intellectual exercise. I really got caught up into it . . . I really liked the musical sequences. I thought the more banal the songs were, the better they were." RIP: Terri Garr has died. She was 79. Garr had a long battle with multiple sclerosis. She suffered an aneurysm in 2006.  AND FINALLY One more sleep until Halloween! If you've been slacking in your spooky movie game this season, it's not too late.    Here are 13 movies that take place on Halloween night:   1. "Late Night with the Devil" (2023)  2. "Terrifier" (2016)  3. "Halloween" (1978)  AND THAT IS YOUR CRAP ON CELEBRITIES! Drummer Omar Hakim is one of those players you know it's him when you hear him. He's been the go-to guy for dozens of legends for over 40 years. Artists like Miles Davis, Sting, Bowie, Dire Straits, Kate Bush rely on him to make them the best they can be. These days, Omar is excited about a new project called Sonic Boom Squad which is almost a solo project. In a fit of creativity he wrote and recorded several funk rock songs along the lines of the Isley Brothers or Mother's Finest and is releasing them over the next few months. We get into all of this as well as playing with Tracy Chapman, Anita Baker, Bruce Hornsby, Bob Geldof, and even Don Johnson and your favorite Mariah Carey Christmas song! There's a lot here. What's up, dudes? They say the sequels are never as good as the first. I think The Empire Strikes Back proves them wrong…but Band Aid II doesn't. I have music journalist Alex Rawls from The Twelve Songs of Christmas and My Spilt Milk with me to talk all about the second version of the charity song done in 1989! Spoilers: it's not as good as the first, but it's still fun!On Friday, December 1, 1989, Bob Geldof called Pete Waterman to ask if he would consider producing a new version of “Do They Know It's Christmas.” Waterman was part of The Hit Factory, a production team made up of himself, Mike Stock, and Matt Aiken. They were known for hi-NRG or Eurobeat style, with tempos usually somewhere between 102-140bpm, four-to-the-floor kick drums, staccato hi-hat, and bass lines frequently looped with fast eighth or sixteenth notes doubled at the octave. In fact, they produced 13 UK #1 singles and 3 US #1s. Waterman even postponed his wedding and rallied several artists together.Subsequently, on Sunday, December 3rd, the assembled artists recorded at PWL Studios in South London. Bob Geldof and family were present. On Tuesday, December 5th, the updated version was played for the first time on London's Capital Radio, 95.8 Capital FM. Advanced sales reached 500,000 copies, and the single was officially released on December 11th. It spent 3 weeks at #1, though Band Aid's original hit spent 5 weeks at #1 and sold over 2 million copies (which was approximately $24million in sales).Kylie Minogue? Check. Bros? Yep. Cliff Richard? A little out of place, but he was definitely there! So grab your denim jacket, put on an uptempo kick drum backing track, and jam out to this episode all about Band Aid II!The 12 Songs of ChristmasFB: @TwelveSongsofChristmasTwitter: @MySpiltMilk IG: @myspiltmilkGive us a buzz! Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth

Aled Jones has been famous since he was only 13, when he was a choirboy at Bangor Cathedral in North Wales with a beautiful voice. In this interview he tells Gyles about his first ever public performance, in a village hall on Anglesey; about how he was discovered and asked to record an album, and about his incredible, and rapid, rise to fame. The next 4 years were a whirlwind - trips to London to be on Wogan, best-selling albums and Top of the Pops, a concert in the Hollywood Bowl in LA, singing at Paula Yates and Bob Geldof's wedding - Aled tells Gyles about all this, and about how his down-to-earth parents supported him and kept his feet on the ground. Thank you to Aled for bringing all these stories to life so vividly and for this charming interview. Enjoy this! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
