Zach is out again this week but we've pulled in not one but two (three if you count the doggo that trotted up to Sarah's mic) of our favorite people in podcasting: Victoriocity's own Jen and Chris Sugden! First, Gabriel brings us a tale of an aspirational identity swap and we turn it up and add a bunch of twisty layers that culminate in a cross-country road trip to the lights of Vegas. Next, Sarah offers up a particularly silly idea from congress and we turn it into this summer's next action-packed disaster movie, with trees… on the moon! Then we chat with them about the origins of their podcast Victoriocity, how they work as writing partners, and the refining process to bring an episode from idea to a script in the studio. Plus: that Midlands energy, 8-10 scientists and politicians in charge of The World, a very grizzled Bruce Willis, pulling a Christopher Nolan and heavy-handed metaphors. Sarah is out this week but we have two stellar guests to fill out the required level of madness at No Bad Ideas HQ: the wonderful Chris and Jenn Sugden have returned! First up, Gabriel brings us a contest that could only take place in Florida and we turn it into an underdog story of an amateur hunter who would give St. Patrick a run for his money. Then Zach gives us yet another reason for why everything is horrible and talks us through the burgeoning private lie-detection industry protecting people from honest conversations with their spouses; we then turn it into a drama of ethical dilemmas, lying liars who lie, and honest brokers who need to start lying too. Finally, Jenn and Chris talk about translating Victoriocity from a much-beloved podcast to an exciting upcoming novel, how their comedy background informs how they think about stories, balancing backstory for new and old audiences, how they manage writing collaboratively, and little teaser for Victoriocity Season 3. Plus: The pre-1950 snake-hunting code of honor, the return of the zoetrope, the end of frivolous things, lying plants, and Big Pete. When he was first starting out in his career, Chris Sugden was given a piece of advice that has stuck with him. He was told to “go find work, don't wait for work to come to you”. This advice complimented with his dad's instructions from his youth football days to “hit or be hit” has led Chris to live and work with the consciousness that opportunities do not just show up. Now a partner and the Chair of the Investment Committee of Edison Partners, Chris seeks out opportunities to grow new ventures. The east coast-based private equity firm not only pursues partnerships with entrepreneurs, Edison Partners also thrives on developing and coaching their colleagues. In this podcast, Chris sits down with Anthony to discuss how important mentorship and coaching is in business. Anthony poses the question that if actors, musicians, and athletes all have coaches to continuously learn and improve upon their skills, why wouldn't there be coaches in the business world too?

Welcome to the Tearsheet Podcast. I'm Zack Miller. As Bitcoin, cryptocurrencies, and initial coin offerings push to new heights, top financial institutions and banks are rushing to figure out just what their future role will be around the blockchain. Join Tearsheet this September to explore these advances in distributed ledger technology and to hear firsthand from institutions pushing on the edge of finance. To see the agenda, speakers and to get more information about purchasing a ticket or sponsoring the event, click on the events tab on our website, Tearsheet.co. As part of an ongoing series, we talk to professional investors in the fintech space to get a feel for what's on their radar screen. I enjoy these discussions because, if these investors are right in their analysis, they give you a little taste of what's to come in the near future in financial technology. Today's guest is Chris Sugden, Managing Partner at Edison Partners, a Princeton NJ growth equity firm that invests in companies generating revenues of $5 to $20 million. After 31 years in the business, Edison is on its 8th fund. Chris leads the firm's activity in fintech and was previously an entrepreneur in the billing and payment space. Chris joins us today on the Tearsheet podcast to discuss the role growth equity plays in the fintech ecosystem. We get the low down on his firm's portfolio which includes investments like early forex leader Gain Capital, vertical payments player PHX, and personal finance manager MoneyLion. Lastly, we talk about where Chris and Edison are looking to make fintech investments in the future.
