Christian nationalism is a phenomenon we usually associate with the United States. But it's also a driving force behind Vladimir Putin and his war on Ukraine. MARLENE LARUELLE specialises in the fusion of religion and global politics at George Washington University. She writes about Russian Christian nationalism in the Journal of Illiberalism Studies. Why is taking so long to choose a new leader of the world's 80 million Anglicans? It took the Catholic Church about three weeks from the death of Pope Francis to elect his successor, Pope Leo. But it's almost seven months since Justin Welby resigned, in controversial circumstances, as Archbishop of Canterbury. Should the next Archbishop of Canterbury be a woman? Justin Welby resigned as leader of the Church of England earlier this year over his handling of historical abuse allegations. Many Christians wrestle with doubt, but who wants to admit that their foundational beliefs are not so firm? Not long ago, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, openly admitted that he's questioned if God is real. When the head of the Church of England says something like that, it makes news. But something interesting came from Welby's honesty. He revealed his humanity. It turns out that the Archbishop lost a baby girl in a car accident many years ago, and when he was a teenager, he had to take care of his alcoholic father. He's human with human difficulties. We are human, and we struggle sometimes.  Can we be honest? While a lifetime of doubt is dangerous, periods of doubt simply mark one as being human, but faith can help us overcome doubt. In the Bible, we read in Hebrews 11:1, “Now, faith is the subject of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11 continues with many examples of faith in action, and at its core, the Christian faith means we believe God sent Jesus Christ to pay the penalty for our sins on the cross, and that God raised Him from the dead. While mountaintop faith is exciting, and it makes us feel good, no one experiences that all the time. Sometimes it's difficult to believe certain things in the Bible. Sometimes we don't feel faith in our lives. It's important to remember that simply expressing doubt can lead to healing and a more faithful future. If you're a struggling believer or a questioning skeptic, this subject is one of the most important you'll ever wrestle with. Stay tuned.Let's pray. Father God, often we push down thoughts that are painful or uncomfortable. We don't have to do that with you, Lord. Even doubts about our faith are conversations that we can start with you, and we're grateful for that. In Jesus' name, amen. Change your shirt, and you can change the world! The former Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, is back in the news following his interview this week with the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg. The interview – his first since he resigned last November – was clearly Welby's attempt to draw a line under the abuse scandal that cost him his job.  The 2024 Makin report concluded that the Church of England missed many opportunities to investigate the late John Smyth, one of the most prolific abusers associated with the Anglican Church. However, the biggest headline from the interview was that Welby would 'forgive' John Smyth were he alive today. Albeit unintentionally, the former Archbishop of Canterbury ended up cementing his reputation as an inflexible micro-manager with a tin ear for the views of abuse survivors and his own clergy.  Where does the interview leave the Church of England? The appointees to the Crown Nominations Committee, the body which will consider the successor to Welby, will soon be known. How should this scandal influence them? And, with mounting reports that Pope Francis has shielded Catholic sexual predators, how does the handling of abuse allegations by Canterbury and Rome compare? The Rev Fergus Butler-Gallie, Vicar of Charlbury in Oxfordshire and the editor-at-large of The Fence magazine, joins Damian Thompson to discuss the abuse crises that seem to be engulfing all the mainstream Churches.  Produced by Patrick Gibbons.

STARMER WELBY PREVENT: TOO LITTLE TOO LATE! In this video, Jon Gaunt delves into the failure of the UK political establishment to protect its citizens and respond effectively to growing public concerns. Gaunty explores the recent comments by Sir Keir Starmer and his delayed recognition of the chaos caused by small boat invasions, which many UK citizens have been outraged about for years. Starmer's new stance raises the question: why do the public seem to understand the urgency before the politicians? Jon Gaunt also examines the failure of former Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, to act swiftly in removing John Smyth, a notorious child abuser, from the church. This highlights a worrying trend of inaction and delayed response among the UK's elite when it comes to protecting the vulnerable. Most shockingly, Jon wants to discuss the revelation that the UK government's anti-terror agency, Prevent, failed multiple times to address the dangerous presence of Axel Rudakubana, who went on to tragically murder three young girls in Southport. The question remains: are the UK political leaders, establishment figures, and security agencies truly committed to safeguarding the public, or are they too slow and ineffective? This video addresses these pressing concerns and questions the priorities of UK leadership in protecting its citizens. Tune in for an insightful look at UK politics, leadership failures, and the consequences of these inactions. Justin Welby has given his first interview, since he resigned as Archbishop of Canterbury because of a failure to act over the serial abuser John Smyth. Dr Welby admits in an interview with the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg he 'got it wrong' because he was 'overwhelmed' by the scale of the problem. However, he says clearly that as Archbishop, there are 'no excuses'. The Sunday programme speaks to theologian and journalist Andrew Graystone who battled for years to bring the truth of John Smyth's crimes to light.Thousands of people have died in Myanmar and more have been injured following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that was also felt in neighbouring countries. Hundreds of people are believed to be trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings - including at least 50 construction workers who are unaccounted for after a high-rise was flattened by the earthquake in Bangkok. We get an update from BBC Correspondent Nick Marsh, who's in Bangkok, and discuss the relief efforts underway with Stefano Disperati who is delivering humanitarian programmes funded by the British NGO Muslim Aid.60 years ago this week, a whirling Julie Andrews burst onto our cinema screens in the UK and claimed her place in cinema history. The Sound of Music became an historic box office smash and won 5 Oscars including best picture. The portrayal of convent life, the religious music and spiritual themes were all part of its charm. But few might know that was because of the real life religious sisters who advised Rodgers and Hammerstein - the famous duo who wrote it. So who were they and how did they become the film's secret weapon? Piers recalls his own boarding school experience, the trauma and subsequent breakdown it caused, and describes the dynamic of the “privilege double-bind”. Piers recounts his years as a Buddhist monk, how he navigated suicide attempts and self harm with meditation and community support, and the powerful mystical experiences he encountered during his religious practice. Piers lists over two dozen leading figures in the arts, business, and politics who attended boarding school and reflects on the possibility of a leadership class affected by abandonment and dissociation by elite educational institutions. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep297-boarding-on-insanity-piers-cross Also available on Youtube, iTunes, & Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast'.

The BBC's religion editor Aleem Maqbool hears from sexual abuse victims who say they were let down by senior church leaders for decades. Priest David Tudor was allowed to continue working within the Church of England - despite widespread concerns about his behaviour. Now there are calls for the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell to resign over his handling of the case. He is due to take temporary charge of the church in the New Year following the resignation of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby. The Church of England says File on 4's investigation into the case of David Tudor has 'revealed a catalogue of past safeguarding decisions, that allowed someone who was considered a risk in the 1980s to return to ministry in the 1990s.' This, they say, should never have happened.Reporter: Aleem Maqbool Producers: Steve Swann and Hayley Mortimer Technical producer: Craig Boardman Production coordinator: Tim Fernley Editor: Carl Johnston

It's Tuesday, November 19th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Rwanda eager to tax churches The Christian church faces more challenges in Africa. The Rwandan parliament is considering legislation which could impose taxes upon churches in that African nation. The Rwandan governance board has already shut down 8,000 churches that do not comply with certain standards. 4 Christians killed in Mozambique, Africa In addition, Barnabas Aid reports that four Christians were killed in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique by Islamic State radicals. 3 Nigerian pastors kidnapped by Muslims Plus, at least three pastors have been kidnapped by Muslim militants in Southern Nigeria over the last few weeks. Nigeria remains one of the most dangerous nations in the world for Christians in 2024.  Archbishop of Canterbury resigns over failure to discipline pedophile The top official in the Church of England, Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby has resigned his office. This comes after the release of a report investigating the 50-year abuse record of a church leader by the name of John Smyth. The church failed to discipline Smyth who had continued a pattern of sexual and physical abuse of boys in three different countries over a long period of time. Welby himself called the church's response "a long-maintained conspiracy of silence about the heinous abuses of John Smyth.”  Welby's resignation also comes just a few weeks after he affirmed that homosexual activity was morally acceptable as long as there was what he called a “stable, committed and faithful relationship.” 1 Peter 4:17 states that “The time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the Gospel of God?” Mali, Africa criminalizes homosexual behavior The parliament of the West African country of Mali passed a law banning homosexual behavior on October 31st, joining 30 other African nations taking the same position. African nations towards the south and east of the continent, however, have done just the opposite — with their government legitimizing the practice over the last 10 years. This includes Gabon, Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, and Namibia. Migration up 10% worldwide The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development has released the International Migration Outlook Report for 2024.   It documents the highest level of migration from poor countries to rich countries in recorded history.  This accounts for 6.5 million immigrants, not counting the 4.7 million Ukrainian immigrants due to the war. That's a 10% increase year-over-year. Nations reaching record levels of immigrants in 2023 included the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Japan, and Switzerland. Typhoon Man-yi in Philippines has 143 mile-per-hour winds (Sound from Typhoon Man-yi) The Philippines is bearing up under a record sixth typhoon this season. Typhoon Man-yi is equivalent to a Category 3 hurricane, sporting winds up to 143 miles per hour. More than half a million people have evacuated the Bicol region in Luzon to prepare for the storm. Thus far, seven people died in a related landslide, reports the Associated Press. At least 160 Filipinos have died in the previous five storms hitting the island nation this season.  Missouri greenlights abortion up until 21 weeks By a vote of 52% to 48%, Missouri voters have set the course for legislation to allow for abortion in their state up to the point of fetal viability or 21 weeks gestation. Only South Dakota retained a pro-life position in the November election. Florida's vote to liberalize their abortion law failed by a 57-43% margin, just short of the 60% requirement. Florida will retain its position to kill babies up until the sixth week. Nebraska will allow for first trimester abortions, after this year's election. During this election, seven states created a so-called “right to abortion” in their state constitutions including Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, and New York. They join Ohio, Kansas, and Kentucky, the three states which previously approved pro-abortion referendums. Isaiah 1:4-6 says, “Alas, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity.  … The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faints. From the sole of the foot even to the head, there is no soundness in it, but wounds and bruises and putrefying sores.” Al Mohler opposes Matt Gaetz for Attorney General President-elect Donald Trump's selection for Attorney General is a bridge too far for some Christian leaders. In an interview with World Magazine,  Al Mohler, the President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, called the selection of Matt Getz “shocking.”  As The Worldview documented yesterday, Liberty Counsel President Mat Staver referred to Gaetz as "not qualified,” and believes his nomination is "shocking and disappointing to those who have followed this man and the lurid scandals and serious allegations of sex parties and drugs during his tenure in the U.S. Congress.” Could entire departments be eliminated under Trump? Expect entire federal departments to be eliminated under a Trump presidency.   That's what Vivek Ramaswamy, the appointee for leading the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency told Fox Business Channel on Sunday. Listen. RAMASWAMY: “We expect mass reductions. We expect certain agencies to be deleted outright. We expect mass reductions in force in areas of the federal government that are bloated. We expect massive cuts among federal contractors and others who are overbilling the federal government. So yes, we expect all of the above. And I think people will be surprised by, I think, how quickly we're able to move with some of those changes, given the legal backdrop the Supreme Court has given us.” 72% of Americans oppose gender change for children A recent Rasmussen poll found that 72% of Americans oppose transgender change attempts for children.  That's up 10% since August.   Also, 73% of voters want parents notified should children be looking to change their name or gender. Several months ago, the state of California restricted parental notification concerning gender transition attempts for children.  Earth now has a temporary second moon And finally, scientists have identified a mini-moon orbiting Earth -- our second moon, as it were, reports The Daily Galaxy. The asteroid, which is only 37 feet in diameter, was pulled temporarily into Earth's gravitational pull on September 29th of this year. Dubbed Asteroid 2024 PT5, it will be released at 11:43 am Eastern Time on November 25,, 2024. This week: welcome to Planet Elon. We knew that he would likely be a big part of Donald Trump's second term, so it was unsurprising when this week Elon Musk was named – alongside entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy – as a co-leader of the new US Department of Government Efficiency, which will look at federal government waste. When Musk took over Twitter, he fired swathes of employees whose work was actively harming the company, so he's in a perfect position to turn his sights on the bloated federal government. It is, writes Douglas Murray, a once-in-a-generation opportunity to strip a whole layer of rot from the body politic. But can he translate his success in the private sector to the public sector? James Ball, political editor of The New European, and Bridget Phetasy, Spectator World contributing editor, joined the podcast to discuss. (02:17) Then: what's next for the Church of England? The nature of Justin Welby's resignation as Archbishop of Canterbury has no historic precedent in the C of E, writes William Moore, of this parish. One certainty is that the Church leadership will now be under enormous pressure to create a new independent body for safeguarding, but who could be next? The Smyth scandal means that appointing a conservative evangelical would be difficult, but appointing an out-and-out progressive would have its own problems. Whoever eventually succeeds Welby, he or she will inherit a Church more at war with itself than at any time in living memory. Joining the podcast is Rev Julie Conalty, the Bishop of Birkenhead and deputy lead bishop for safeguarding. (20:58) And finally: can you tell your Claret from your Beaujolais? In the magazine this week, drinks writer Henry Jeffreys discusses Beaujolais Day, the festivities started in the famous French appellation d'origine contrôlée that celebrate the first wine of the season. He joined us to discuss everything Beaujolais with Johnny Ray, The Spectator's wine critic. (35:39) Hosted by William Moore and Lara Prendergast. Produced by Oscar Edmondson.

(Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Ugandan pastor and family burned to death A pastor and his family were burned to death in a house fire in Eastern Uganda, reports The Christian Post. The bodies of Pastor Weere Mukisa, his 25-year-old wife, Annet Namugaya, and their two daughters, 7-year-old Judith and 4-year-old Sylvia, were found consumed in a fire set in the early morning hours of October 13th. The pastor had been threatened by local Muslims for evangelizing among the local Muslim population. The pastor's brother said, “When the three young Muslims converted to Christ, my brother started receiving threatening messages that he should stop any contact with the three converts, and that the act committed is against the teaching of Islam to not join the religion of infidels.” Canadian government persecuting 74 Amish In other news, the Canadian government is persecuting 74 members of the Amish community in Ontario for their failure to download a Covid-19 app despite the fact they have no access to smart phones. The government has also placed liens on the Amish farms for those incapable of paying the fines.  Russia has gained control of Donetsk, Ukraine The Russian army has gained control of 478 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in the ongoing war, mostly in the Donetsk region in the month of October. That's the first major gain since March of 2022. The Kiel Institue of the World Economy reports that the Ukrainian conflict has already drawn $128 billion from Europe and $92 billion from the US. Meantime, Russia is increasing its military budget by 25% to $145 billion in 2025 — a full 32% of the nation's government budget, reports Reuters.  Archbishop of Canterbury compromises on Biblical sexuality The leading cleric in the Church of England, Justin Welby, was asked in an interview last week what he thought about acts of sodomy. The Archbishop of Canterbury approved of the sexual perversion in these words. WELBY: “Where we've come to is to say that all sexual activity should be within a committed relationship, whether it's straight or gay. In other words, we're not giving up on the idea that sex is within marriage or civil partnership.” Some within the Anglican Church are now calling for the archbishop's resignation. Proverbs 25:26 points out that, “Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.” House sales hit lowest level since 1995 Annual sales of existing single family homes in the United States have dropped to the lowest level since 1995, reports The Wall Street Journal. That's almost 30 years ago!   Buyers are revolting against high prices. For example, the median price of a condo is $360,000, up from $165,000 in 2013.  Bitcoin, gold and inflation are up Bitcoin is hovering around $69,000, approaching an all-time high again, up 4.5% from three years ago. Gold is up 61% from three years ago, now selling at $2,740 per ounce. And inflation is up 16% over the last three years.  Public profanity more common Profanity is more common in the public forum.   A recent presidential candidate swore or cursed 13 times at a rally.   On the local level, KPBS of San Diego analyzed the city's public meetings, and found an exponential increase in incivility, cursing, and swearing between 2020 and 2023. The number of uncivil exchanges in the public meetings increased from just two in 2008 to 167 in 2023. A recent survey produced by Harris X poll found that 68% of Americans over 65 years of age are bothered by the public use of profanity, and only 26% of 18- to 35-year-olds are bothered by it. Deuteronomy 5:11 issues the warning for all of us: “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.” Trump enjoys slight lead in all 7 swing states In the presidential polls, Trump leads Harris in Wisconsin by one point. Trump leads in Michigan by one point. Trump leads in Arizona by two points. Trump is half a point ahead in Pennsylvania. Trump leads in North Carolina by two points. Mel Gibson eager to depict Siege of Malta Actor and producer Mel Gibson met with the Prime Minister of Malta and the Film Commission to discuss a production of a film which would dramatize the historic Siege of Malta, reports The Times of Malta. Between the months of May and September of 1565, seven hundred knights defended the European continent from the island invasion of 40,000 Mohammedan Turks. Queen Elizabeth I had warned that, “If the Turks should prevail against the Isle of Malta, it is uncertain what further peril might follow to the rest of Christendom.”   In the providence of God, the Hospitaler Knights, led by Jean Parisot de Valette, defeated the seemingly invincible Ottomans, and saved Europe. $1,075 given toward $4,185 goal to finish Pakistani orphanage well And finally, toward the $4,185 that we are trying to raise to help a Pakistani Christian orphanage housing 85 children dig a new 500-foot deep well to avoid the contamination of chemicals that compromised their 200-foot well, four Worldview families made a donation. In the memo, write: “Pakistani orphanage well.” The prayer center will then wire your money to a nearby bank in Pakistan to help build that well.  Please email me at Adam@TheWorldview.com to let me know how much you wrote your check for so we can help complete this life-saving project.
