It turned into a full-blown argument, and Elizabeth stormed off on foot from his Killeen home, heading back to her home in Lampasas, some 28 miles away. A short time later, she called her boyfriend from a 7-11 store in Copperas Cove, a town in between Lampasas and Killeen, and the two argued again. Art looting is commonly recognized as a central feature of Nazi expropriation, in both the Third Reich and occupied territories. After the war, the famed Monuments Men (and women) recovered several hundred thousand pieces from the Germans' makeshift repositories in churches, castles, and salt mines. Well publicized restitution cases, such as that of Gustav Klimt's luminous painting featured in the film Woman in Gold, illustrate the legacy of Nazi looting in the art world today. But what happened to looted art that was never returned to its rightful owners? In France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, postwar governments appropriated the most coveted unclaimed works for display in museums, embassies, ministries, and other public buildings. Following cultural property norms of the time, the governments created custodianships over the unclaimed pieces, without using archives in their possession to carry out thorough provenance (ownership) research. This policy extended the dispossession of Jewish owners wrought by the Nazis and their collaborators well into the twenty-first century. The custodianships included more than six hundred works in Belgium, five thousand works in the Netherlands, and some two thousand in France. They included paintings by traditional and modern masters, such as Rembrandt, Cranach, Rubens, Van der Weyden, Tiepolo, Picasso, and Matisse. This appropriation of plundered assets endured without controversy until the mid-1990s, when activists and journalists began challenging the governments' right to hold these items, ushering in a period of cultural property litigation that endures to this day. Including interviews that have never before been published, Museum Worthy: Nazi Art Plunder in Postwar Western Europe (Oxford University Press, 2024) by Dr. Elizabeth Campbell deftly examines the appropriation of Nazi art plunder by postwar governments and highlights the increasingly successful postwar art recovery and restitution process. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Hosted by writer Emma Atkinson, RadioEd is a triweekly podcast created by the DU Newsroom that taps into the University of Denver's deep pool of bright brains to explore the most compelling and interesting research coming out of DU. See below for a transcript of this episode. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office says the Art Institute of Chicago demonstrated “willful blindness” when it purchased “Russian War Prisoner,” a drawing by Austrian Artist Egon Schiele. The museum insists it came by the piece legally.  Why all the drama? Well, the drawing was stolen by the Nazis during World War II.  We'll let the courts decide what happens in Chicago. But right here in Colorado, University of Denver professor of history Ellizabeth Campbell is leading a national conversation about what happened to art looted by the Nazis in World War II—and why the rehoming, or restitution, process isn't as straightforward as it might seem. Elizabeth Campbell is a history professor at the University of Denver. She also serves as director of the Center for Art Collection Ethics (ACE). Campbell teaches courses in modern European and French history, including the French Revolution, Europe during the World Wars, Nazi art looting and seminars on the history and memory of World War II in France and the Algerian war of independence.  Her latest book, “Museum Worthy: Nazi-Era Art in Postwar Western Europe,” focuses on the Allied recovery of plundered art, comparing restitution practices in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. In all three cases, postwar governments held unclaimed works for display in state-run museums, setting the stage for controversy and litigation in the 1990s and ongoing cultural property disputes. (Oxford University Press, forthcoming)  In the spring of 2017, Campbell began developing plans for ACE in consultation with DU faculty and staff in related programs. ACE promotes ethical art collection stewardship through social media and on-campus training programs. More Information: "Museum Worthy: Nazi-Era Art in Postwar Western Europe” by Elizabeth Campbell “Art Institute showed ‘willful blindness' in buying Nazi-looted art, New York prosecutors say” Chicago Sun-Times “Russian War Prisoner” Art Institute of Chicago “An Art Critic's Secret Critique Of Hitler's Paintings Shown Uncanny Insight” History Daily Center for Art Collection Ethics

Prior to entering the real estate industry, Elizabeth owned and operated a Bed & Breakfast in rural northern California, outside of Sacramento on a 142-acre ranch. She and her husband raised their three kids there, had a rescue zoo, and met many wonderful people from around the world over that thirteen year time-span. Some famous people stayed with them, like David Hasselhoff–he was very funny and has a great sense of humor!  As the market declined, Elizabeth and her husband worked to keep things going, but eventually decided to sell the property. The agents they were working with asked Elizabeth and her husband to get into real estate with them. She discovered the best training on the internet for real estate was from…Keller Williams agents! Being remote and rural, Elizabeth wanted to go farther faster, and she chose Idaho as her brother was moving there. In June 2016 they moved to Idaho, and she started interviewing and joined Keller Williams. She also joined the coaching program and took all the training she could, then joined a team as a Listing Agent. Elizabeth pushed to do door knocking, and went with a partner. As a result, she met many very nice people. It was this experience that helped her realize that Idaho was the place for her to be.  At one point she went to a different brokerage, but the database was not current, and she helped the agent know that they needed an inside salesperson, not her as a Listing Agent. At the same time, she was getting callbacks from the previous work she did, and the KW brokerage asked her to come back as a Buyer Agent. Elizabeth created her own process for data collection from open houses and follow up. Following the MREA model, she eventually hired an Executive Assistant, and her business doubled.  By following more pointers from a book called Perk Your Sphere, Elizabeth has implemented many programs and continues to build her business. She has become the Vice President of Training and Growth to help other agents learn important points through a well-organized program. They are focused on a three level training program called Mission-Vision-Mastery, with all the training available on an app that is also available on desktop through a platform called The Mighty Networks.
