Are you “done with 2020”? Many of us certainly are. Seems 2020 has been the year of disaster, failure, and disappointment. Hardship for many. We met so many challenges this year with lockdowns, layoffs, scrambling to work from home, and some good friends and colleagues passing away. Tom Ray is our guest, and somewhat of an expert on equipment failures; he sees a lot of them! Despite Tom’s sometimes curmudgeonly disposition, he’s actually an optimistic and positive engineer. On this episode we’re looking at equipment failures that seemed especially rampant this past year, and we look at the bright side of getting these failures repaired and working again. Most of our TWiRT family and friends know by now that our co-host, Chris Tobin, passed away last Saturday, December 19, 2020. He was 59 years old. We will do a special TWiRT episode in tribute to Chris within a few days. For now, we’re carrying on with today’s TWiRT episode, as I”m quite sure Chris would have wanted. Rest in Peace in God’s arms, Chris. Over a month ago we decided to do a Christmas Eve edition of This Week in Radio Tech. John Bisset, agreed to be on the show with us to recall some Christmas engineering memories, chat about Christmas gifts, and think about what’s ahead for radio engineers. Plus, we read and answer some comments from engineers as part of a Christmas Eve giveaway. Many of us got our morning and afternoon hosts operating from their homes pretty quickly back in March. We had just a few days - or even just a weekend - to get our on-air talent connected from their kitchen tables or bedrooms, along with news and traffic reporters. Bryan Jones, Engineering Support Specialist at the Telos Alliance, helped dozens of broadcasters get operational from their homes. Now, we’re discussing longer-term home and remote broadcast operations. What are the best practices and key concerns from an IT perspective? What pitfalls should we avoid while improving these remote operations for long-term service? Plus, Chris Tobin describes his station’s unique remote operations setup.

The one where the boys dealt with the Procrastination Monkey (a real thing btw) and got stood up by the Panic Monster (also real), Cody and guest talk about their love of effective profanity, Chris Tobin of St. Louis Fire Department covers vacant buildings and why we shouldn't write them off right away, admits to the occasional transitional and defensive attack, points out that the shorter the bio is, the more humble the instructor usually tends to be, cancer and where the hell do we as the fire service draw the line, the fact that aggressive shouldn't be a bad word and you can do literally ANYTHING AGGRESSIVELY, and then of course Stephen bonds with him over the amazing African continent (go to Africa one day, you heathens! It's literally the best place ever). Also, Stephen apologizes for the delay...
If you feel as if the culture of safety in the fire service has been replaced with a culture of fear, then you'll want to listen to Chris Tobin. An old-school firefighter at heart, he explains why fear holds today's firefighters back, why supposedly-vacant buildings need to be treated as occupied, and the merits of being aggressive. This week, someone asked me to answer this question, "What 1 piece of advice would you give to a rookie on her/his first day?" As a lifelong educator, my answer was simple, "Never give up your hunger to learn!" Our guest today, Chris Tobin, returns to discuss two topics that have been at the front of some of the fire-related tweets over the last few weeks, Mentoring and Mutual Aid. Chris explains that even with about 15 years in firefighting, eight with his current employer, he's still the "rookie" in his firehouse. Nevertheless, he stresses that not only is he anxious to learn from the more experienced firefighters, but he then turns around and shares that with the newer members at the volunteer department that he helps. Chris also points out that whenever someone knows he's a firefighters and asks him about the job, he "pays it forward" by providing them with as much pertinent information as he can. In the second half of our podcast, we discuss the manpower crisis facing many volunteer and even some career departments. That said, we talk about the pros (many) and cons (hardly) of setting levels for automatic mutual aid that will best benefit the citizen and the departments. Egos have no place when lives and property are threatened.
