Lockdown continues apace in many respects, and our hosts are still limited to virtual hang-outs with their special guests - no huggin' or pints! This month, Ann and Emma dropped boat-dwelling DJ and Today Fm presenter Claire Beck a line. A familiar name to many, Claire is a stalwart of Irish radio and tells our hosts about getting her start in pirate radio in Dublin in her teens. June is Pride Month and talk turns to how Pride has drifted a little from its original meaning but has lost none of its importance. Our hosts and guest discuss the importance of strong allies to all marginalised communities, and chat about language and "cancel culture". A busy NO ENCORE this week as Dave and Craig go from predicting the Choice Music Prize result at the last minute to a phantom live - and loud and a bit messy, let's be honest - update from the show itself and then back to the regular episode. It's like Inception. Kind of. Also this week - the boys run down their favourite life-affirming motivational songs, review the new album from Soccer Mommy, ponder the likelihood of Fontaines D.C. being some kind of psy-op conspiracy and generally just try and get through this whole strange 'life' thing... ACT ONE [1:59]: News~! ACT TWO [6:43]: That weird past/present/future tense Choice Music Prize bit. Shouts to the great Eoin Murray, Claire Beck and Daithí O'Dronaí for putting up with Dave shoving a phone in their faces as security were desperately trying to clear out the venue. ACT THREE [31:51]: Soccer Mommy returns with further bedroom pop adventures in the form of Color Theory. Any use? ACT FOUR [43:51]: Time to feel 10 feet tall as the guys detail the songs that give them life.

With Hanners on his hollypops, Claire Beck climbs aboard the NO ENCORE frigate to keep Colm and Craig company. An album of provocative pop is under the microscope, the conversation inevitably goes West, and this week’s tracks get X-rated… ACT ONE: ‘Ye dismay, Drizzy in a tizzy, ABBA rebjörn, and acts' favourite axe-makers face axe – it’s the news, y’all! ACT TWO: Protests and parties sit side-by-side on Janelle Monae’s Dirty Computer – but is the multi-hyphenate pushing the right buttons? ACT THREE: How to describe the Songs of the Week? Like Christina Aguilera and Natalie Prass stuck in a lift with Parquet Courts and Dirty Projectors, as Kanye chips in through the emergency radio. Or something along those lines… EXIT MUSIC: Talos | ‘Kansas’
A fun fact about Fear/Fun host Claire Beck: when she isn't busy asking people the question "what is your biggest fear?" she spends her spare time in the Circus training aerial acrobatics. For this episode, she is joined by two incredibly talented circus artists, Aisling Ní Cheallaigh and Ronan Brady. The tour of their original show How To Square A Circle starts this weekend in Dublin, but they took time out of their busy rehearsal schedule to discuss burning issues such as: how to spin on an aerial hoop really fast without throwing up (Aisling), what it was like getting to the semi finals of Ireland's Got Talent (Ronan), do married people still have sex?, and the fear of getting too comfortable.
For this episode Claire Beck is joined by comedian, writer and actress Alison Spittle and DJ and Today FM-er Ed Smith to answer the question "What is your biggest fear?" They start off with a LOT of talk about snacks, before moving on to discuss the correlations between building DJ and comedy sets, the effects of their Irish Catholic upbringings on their fearful childhood selves, Stoneybatter hipsters and more.
To celebrate International Women's Day 2018, music editor Andrea Cleary hosts a special episode of the HeadStuff Podcast. Andrea chats feminism, pop music, and the Irish music scene with some of the journalists, musicians, DJ's and critics making a positive impact on the Irish music industry right now. Guests include Emma Langford, Maija Sofia, Claire Beck, Zara Hedderman and Louise Bruton. Featured Songs: Closed Book by Emma Langford and Flowers by Maija Sofia Subscribe to The HeadStuff Podcast for future episodes, once-off documentaries and much more on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, TuneIn or where ever you get your podcasts.
**Fear/Fun #2 - Phobias ** Once again, the Fear/Fun crew gathered in Bello Bar in Dublin to ask the question "what is your biggest fear?" Claire Beck was joined by TV3 and Today FM presenter Muireann O'Connell and Sing Along Social and Castaway Buffet host Anna Jacob. All three discuss their entirely weird phobias (HeadStuff editor Alan also makes a guest appearance to explain Claire so she doesn't have to puke while doing so) As it's Valentine's Day, they also explore some phobias around love and commitment, and a round of Guerilla Problem Solving gets real. It was recorded live, deep in the midst of January Fear territory, at Bello Bar in Dublin. They discuss dry January, The Fear, belly buttons, and introduce the new Fear / Fun concept of Guerilla Problem Solving.
