The mental health of Clare's young people is said to be taking a hit because there's "nowhere to rent" and "nowhere to buy". A new report from the National Youth Council of Ireland has found that housing and the cost of living are the issues of most concern to young people in this country. Following extensive surveying of people between the ages of 18 and 29 nationwide, the National Youth Council of Ireland has published 'State of our Young Nation" report. The findings show, arguably unsurprisingly, that housing and the rising cost of living are the greatest for concerns for young people, having been cited by 76% and 62% respectively. At 48%, almost half of participants are dissatisfied with their current housing situations, while more than half have experienced an increase in their rental or mortgage payments in the last year. The latest RTB figures show the average rent for a new tenancy in Clare has risen by almost 20% to €1,145 in the space of a year and there are currently just 18 properties to rent here on Daft.ie. While, the average price from a home in this county is up by nearly 10% to €256,174. Ardnacrusha native and Fianna Fáil local election Rachel Hartigan believes supply needs to be rapidly increased to address the scarcity of places for young people to live. Nuacht Mhall. Príomhscéalta na seachtaine, léite go mall. * Inniu an tríochadú lá de mhí an Mhárta. Is mise Gwyneth Nic Aidicín Ní Loingsigh. Bhí an líon daoine ag baint úsáid as seirbhisí tithíochta éigeandála in Éirinn níos airde ná riamh cheana an mhí seo caite. Bhí 13,841 daoine i dtithíocht éigeandála i mí Feabhra, 4,170 díobh a bhí ina bpáistí. Sin na huimhreacha is airde a taifeadadh ó tosaíodh taifead a dhéanamh, agus ardú 310 duine atá i gceist i gcomparáíd le mí Eanáir. Tá 10,100 de na daoine taifeadta bunaithe i mBaile Átha Cliath. Léirigh ionadaí ó Chlann Shíomóin nach bhfuil daoine a bhíonn ag fanacht ar na sráideanna, daoine atá ag éalú ó fhoréigean baile nó lucht iarrtha tearmainn san áireamh sna figiúirí sin agus mar sin nach léiriú ceart iad don ghéarchéim iomlán. Mar thoradh ar an éíleamh ard ar na seirbhisí tá ar dhaoine gan dídean tréimhse níos giorra a chaitheamh i dtithíocht éigeandála. D'iarr Clann Shíomóin ar an rialtas dearbhthosáiocht a dhéanamh as an ngéarchéím easpa dídine. Dúirt siad gurb í tógáil tithí sóisialta agus inacmhainne an t-aon fhreagar agus chuir siad brú ar an rialtas glacadh leis an “Simon Homeless Prevention Bill” agus cearta dídine a chumhdach.  Tharla timpiste uafásach in Baltimore sna Stáit Aontaithe Dé Máirt nuair a bhuail long choimeadán Droichead Francis Scott Key i bpríomhphort na cathrach. Tá an droichead 2.6k i bhfad agus thit sé san fharraige de bharr an damáiste a rinneadh don tacaíocht nuair a tharla an t-imbhualadh. Tá fiosrú oifigiúil fós ar siúl le teacht ar chúis chinnte leis an timpiste ach deir oifigeach gur tharla cliseadh cumhachta ar an long agus gur seoladh comhartha guaise nóiméad roimh an imbhualadh. Bhí ochtar ag obair ar an droichead nuair a tharla an timpiste agus tugadh tarrtháil ar bheirt acu. Fuair beirt bás agus leanann iarrachtaí teacht ar an gceathrar atá caillte ach glactar leis go bhfuil siad marbh. Tá dúshlán mór i gceist leis an iarracht mar gheall ar an teocht fhuar agus an líon smionagair san uisce. Ní raibh aon ghortú ag an bhfoireann ar an long. Is é Port Baltimore an port is gnóthaí i Stáit Aontaithe Mheiriceá maidir le heaspórtáil gluaisteán agus tá sé tábhachtach le haghaidh lasta freisin. Tógfaidh sé tamaillín an droichead a atógáil agus tá imní ann faoin tionchar ar shlabhraí soláthair an domhain.  D'fhógair Micheál Martin, an Tánaiste agus Aire Gnóthaí Eachtracha go bhfuil Éire chun idirghabháil a dhéanamh sa chás a thosaigh an Aifric Theas i gcoinne Iosrael faoin gCoinbhinsiúin ar Chinedhíothú ag an gCúirt Bhreithiúnais Idirnáisiúnta. Dúirt an Tánaiste gur thug sé orduithe d'oifigí tús a chur le hobair ar fhógairt idirghabháil faoi alt 63 de reacht na Cúirte. Má ghlacann an rialtas leis cuirfear an idirghabháil leis an gcás i gcoinne Iosrael ag an gcúirt sa Háig. Bhí an rialtas faoi bhrú leanúnach ón bpobal agus ón bhfreasúra chun gníomhú maidir leis an gcás seo. Dúirt Rapóirtéir Speisialta um Chearta an Duine ag na Náisiúin Aontaithe gur "cinneadh tábhachtach" é ach "b'fhéidir thar téarma". Mhínigh Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, ollamh dlí ag Ollscoil na Banríona i mBéal Feirste, nach cás coiriúil atá i gceist agus níl brí ag an idirghabháil go bhfuil an rialtas ar aon "taobh" ach is tuairim bunaithe ar fhíricí atá i gceist leis an idirghabháil.  * Léirithe ag Conradh na Gaeilge i Londain. The Simon Community's most recently published "Locked Out Of The Market" report has revealed there are just 27 properties nationwide available within the limits of the Housing Assistance Payment with 16 of these in Dublin. Meanwhile, an analysis of Daft.ie shows there are just 31 properties to rent in Clare with the cheapest being a house in Shannon for €750 per month. Mid West Simon CEO Jackie Bonfield says that due to the scarcity of properties on the market, renters are forced to settle for any available tenancy.

Kerry has worked in residential and community support with Women's Aid, Simon Community and Community Family Support Teams. Accredited by CPCAB and QQI as a life coach, she is a Brainspotting Consultant In Training, Complex Trauma Practitioner with additional training in EFT and breathwork. Kerry has a busy private practice in Brainspotting alongside her work with young people and families,  and staff teams. In this enlightening episode, Kerry McWilliams reflects on her depth of experience with working with young people to explore and explain a brain wise approach to supporting teenagers to thrive emotionally.  Alongside her team, Kerry has researched the fundamentals of teenage emotional health from the perspective of the young people.  Through listening to the diversity and fluctuations in how young people engage with their emotions they developed a programme that accesses the deep brain and body to educate and empower young people in identifying, modulating and regulating emotions in a way that feels simple, accessible and rewarding.  Kerry introduces Emotional Freedom Techniques, Havening, Breathwork and Brainspotting as key approaches to somatic portals to deep and sustaining regulation.  These approaches were shown to provide significant emotional stabilisation at such a difficult time of life, which has collided with such a difficult time on this planet.  As children discover these natural forms of regulation their brains are sculpted to incorporate positive approaches to self healing which are both contagious and can facilitate a life long relationship with a healthy relationship to feelings and the self. For more information on Kerry's work go to:www.lightworkni.orghttps://youtube.com/@lightworkemotionalresilien909?si=E2uTo2ZaN65g_Nmh For more information on Brainspotting and to train with Dr Mark Grixti go to: https://bspuk.co.uk/trainings-and-events/ https://www.facebook.com/brainspottinguk https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/awe-in-trauma/id1580294433?i=1000543054793 https://twitter.com/BrainspottingUK https://www.instagram.com/brainspotting_uk/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-wfQEAwQX3qr36zkhh9J0g

The other waiting list crisis

Forward Together Podcast

When waiting lists are discussed and shouted about in Northern Ireland, we are usually talking about our disintegrating healthcare system. But there is a second waiting list crisis – that of households seeking social housing. As at March of last year, there were 44,426 applicants on the social housing waiting list. Of these, over 10,000 were regarded as homeless and more than 31,000 were in housing stress. Nor is the situation improving. There was a 20% jump in applicants for social housing in Derry and Strabane last year. House building is not catching up – instead it is increasingly falling behind. There were a mere 922 completions of social housing units of accommodation – houses and apartments – in the 2021/22 year across all of NI. At this rate, it would take four decades to meet the demand.Meanwhile, the private sector has been exploiting the opportunity. There are now as many private sector tenancies as in the whole of the social housing sector – the Housing Executive and housing associations combined. And there are complaints that some private sector properties are of very poor standard.Another symptom of the crisis is the massive increase in demand for temporary accommodation. Total spend across Northern Ireland has jumped from £5.8m in the 2018/19 year to £23.7m in the 2022/23 year. In Derry and Strabane this has risen from £930,000 to £5.8m over that same four year time period. The increase for Belfast is much smaller, having increased from £1.6m to £3.7m in that time. In the latest Holywell Conversations podcast, housing campaigner Marissa McMahon, who works with both Participation and Practice of Rights (PPR) and the Simon Community, discusses the scale of the crisis and how this can be addressed. Paddy Gray, emeritus professor of housing at Ulster University and a seasoned housing association board director, considers how social housing providers can boost construction.Despite the shortfall, there are significant development programmes being taken forward. Belfast city centre is awash with city centre apartment construction. In Derry, the focus is more on the suburbs, where some very large schemes are underway. A new Cashel estate on the Buncrana Road will eventually produce 2,500 new homes, including 800 social housing units. That is a joint scheme between private developer Braidwater and Apex Housing Association. Apex has appointed Kevin Watson Construction to build out another new development of 250 homes at Springtown, which was approved against advice from planning officials. And Apex has led on the construction of more than a thousand new homes in the Skeogh area of Derry over the last eight years. Choice Housing Association is now to construct an additional 244 homes in the same area. Choice, in partnership with South Bank Square Ltd, is also building another 252 properties on the Waterside, by the Gransha roundabout.  It is too soon to determine what impact, if any, these new developments will have on community integration. The Housing Executive reports that social housing segregation remains most common in the urban parts of Belfast, Derry and Craigavon. But it is proud of its Shared Housing programme, which has grown to 69 schemes comprising 1,973 homes, delivered by 11 housing associations across all council areas. The Housing Executive says that people want to live in mixed communities, pointing to the Life and Times Survey, which indicates that 79% of respondents would like to live in an integrated, non-segregated, housing community. But the main priority for tenants is to live close to relatives and friends, which creates a drag on cross-community integration. There are other signs of progress, with a big fall in the number of households that have had to be re-housed because of sectarian and other intimidation. In 2002/3, there were over 1,000 households seeking assistance because of intimidation. By 2022, this had fallen to 171 households. There has been a comparable fall in properties acquired after forced evacuation, under the SPED scheme, the use of which fell from 382 properties in 2003/4, down to nothing in 2021/2 and just one in 2022/3. At least there are some positive signs of progress.  Disclaimer: This project has received support from the Northern Ireland Community Relations Council which aims to promote a pluralist society characterised by equity, respect for diversity, and recognition of interdependence. Podcast goes live after first broadcast.    'Belong’ is a contemporary radio drama set in Dublin, told from the perspective of Christy - a single homeless man in his late fifties. Following the breakup of a long-term relationship he loses his job due to his mental health issues and is evicted from his bedsit when the property owner decides to convert the building into luxury apartments. Unable to find affordable accommodation, Christy is forced to take refuge in emergency hostels but eventually ends up sleeping rough on the streets. Christy's depression makes him extremely anxious, withdrawn, and afraid of connecting with new people or reaching out for help. Despite this, Christy befriends Kevin, a young man who spent much of his youth being abused while in foster care and now living on the streets. A rehabilitation opportunity emerges which can save Christy - but can he help Kevin avoid a life on the streets? In the radio drama, ‘Belong’ the authors aim to raise awareness for the homeless crisis in Ireland, and give those struggling on the streets a national voice. In highlighting the plethora of challenges facing those struggling to maintain a roof over their head, the issue of spiralling property crisis which is impacting generations of vulnerable people across the country is laid bare. Another key focus of the drama is the cultural stigma around mental health issues, the lack of key support services for those with limited means, and the resulting struggle for those affected to reach out and access help. The drama is also in recognition of the many staff and volunteers who are helping those on the streets of Ireland every day of the year through organisations such as the Simon Community, Focus Ireland and many more. Hi everyone! One of the commitments for One Movie Punch in Year Three is to feature more microbudget and independent features. We’ve started to receive screeners from a variety of small independent distributors, featuring a wide variety of films. Every Wednesday, we hope to feature an independent and/or microbudget feature, with up to two interviews per month with the filmmakers when schedules allow. Today’s review will cover Irish filmmaker Robbie Walsh’s EDEN, a microbudget drama looking at homelessness in Dublin after a recent economic crash. And it doesn’t get more microbudget than this film, made for just around 600 Euro in 2012, although not completed until 2016. I was lucky enough to sit down and speak with Robbie about the film, along with his film career and his brief MMA career. The full interview will be available at our Patreon page this Sunday, but you’ll hear snippets of the interview throughout today’s review. We’ll also be playing the full trailer audio for EDEN beforehand. Subscribe to stay current with the latest releases. Contribute at Patreon for exclusive content. Connect with us over social media to continue the conversation. Here we go! ///// > ///// Today’s movie is EDEN, the Irish microbudget drama written and directed by Robbie Walsh. Set against the dire homelessness crisis in Dublin, Ireland, EDEN follows a day in the life of Adam (Johnny Elliott), a homeless man living his life to the best of his ability. Throughout the day, he encounters a variety of Dubliners, struggling with their own problems, and a few willing to help him with his. No spoilers. I always get a little nervous when filmmakers tackle homelessness. I think the first film I saw that tackled homelessness was John Hughes’ last film, 1991’s CURLY SUE, where Bill Dancer (Jim Belushi) and his companion Curly Sue (Alisan Porter) pull scams to make enough to eat and conning a divorce lawyer into a heartwarming conclusion. The second instance was seeing another Hughes screenplay, 1991’s DUTCH, when Dutch (Ed O’Neill) must transport his girlfriend’s son Doyle (a very young Ethan Embry), and after losing their car, spend a night in a homeless shelter. The overall messaging in both films was positive, but making a comedy out of child homelessness and including a scene of a rich kid slumming it in a shelter cannot help but feel privileged. The same privilege sparked a more complex debate over 2014’s TIME OUT OF MIND, where Richard Gere played a homeless man on the streets of New York, including some method preparation by hanging out on the street. While this kind of effort also feels privileged, because Gere knows at any time he can just catch a cab home, it was also for a drama, which at least gets us moving in the right direction. I’ve seen a new wave of films about homelessness that have gotten better at capturing the real plight, at least in the United States. 2016’s CARDBOARD BOXER saw Thomas Haden Church play a homeless man exploited by rich kids to participate in the atrocious phenomenon known as bum fights. It is a very difficult watch, and has its rough moments, but tackles way more than the tantalizing subject matter. 2018’s LEAVE NO TRACE saw the return of Debra Granik, the genius behind WINTER’S BONE, adapting a book based on the rumored lives of a father/daughter pair living completely off the grid in Oregon. The film not only showed a different side to homelessness, with a special focus on PTSD, but also the very real strains on families living off the grid. And now, as I’ve recently seen in Robbie Walsh’s EDEN, the situation isn’t just limited to the United States. ROBBIE: "The inspiration itself came from a few different areas. At the time, I had recently just left the military and found myself in between jobs and in between homes, essentially. And at the time, I was lucky in that I still had a lot of my military equipment, like sleeping bags and what not, and I had my car, so I had a couple of weeks, and I was too embarrassed to tell my family I didn't have a job at the time, and eventually I did and I had to come back home, which was a huge thing you find with Irish people, especially if they travel overseas. And as we were making the film, our lead actor, Johnny Elliott, fantastic actor, as we were filming, he was literally the same thing, he was between homes and a couple of the actors who would guest, small roles, and a couple of two and unders, two lines and under, you know, one of the guys was my housemate, and he moved into the house with my producer, who we were all living together. We found out he was living in a doorway in the city center in town, in Dublin, and we were like, 'Dude, what are you doing?' And he was a dear friend of my friend Philip's, and he said, 'Yo, come on, come live in the house with us.' We helped get him back on his feet. Our cameraman was in between homes. He'd just been told his rent would be going up in his apartment, and he couldn't afford it, and he was trying to find somewhere else to live. Very, very rampant. One of the girls who was living with us was struggling to pay rent to the point where she didn't have a tv or anything. There was an actress, one of the finest actresses in the country, you know, and nothing. She could barely feed her kids, like, you know? We didn't know this until we were filming, and as we were filming, they were telling, sharing the stories, and telling the stories, you know? And I was just like, 'This is going to get worse before it gets better'." If anyone is going to talk about homelessness in cinema, it should be those folks who have actually experienced homelessness. I’ve been lucky enough to have always had a roof over my head, but I’ve known a few people who’ve spent some time without a home, and the experience affects each person in similar and unique ways. EDEN’s cast and crew all have experienced some form of homelessness, and the authenticity shows in the storytelling and in the character’s portrayals. The hardest part about portraying the homeless is to not fall back on stereotypes, even if sometimes homelessness expresses itself in similar ways. ROBBIE: “and that's where I tried to do as much as possible was to show slow descent into Adam's situation with each interaction, and each person will reflect a stage of life where Adam has probably found himself, and he's chosen to go left or right. Literally through no fault of his own, it's just because work dried up and he couldn't afford to pay the rent.” Every character along Adam’s journey feels authentic, and each serves a unique purpose. Sarah Carroll plays Claire, a mother turning to sex work to make ends meet. Kelly Blaise plays a woman jumping to conclusions about Adam. Robbie Walsh himself gets in front of the camera as a taxi driver who had previously been homeless. And in Robbie’s favorite scene, Kevin O’Brien plays someone who just lost their job. ROBBIE: “My favorite scene is the one where he sits on the park bench, and the guy sits beside him. At times, because of how Kev O'Brien plays this spoiled guy, he gets sympathy, you feel sympathy one second, then he's a sleazebag the next. And the next minute, I can see where people have done that. And then you're like, 'You know what, do you deserve it or don't you?'” One of my favorite parts of speaking with the filmmakers for these special review episodes is that I get a chance to learn more about the process of how the film was made. I think films should be judged similar to how diving is judged at the Olympics; difficulty definitely plays into overall rating. I’m particularly interested in the constraints independent filmmakers are working under, and in the case of EDEN, just how much can be done with very little. ROBBIE: “I filmed it in four days, because I didn't have the money, I had like 600 Euro, which works out at the time about $800, you know. When we finished filming after three days, my editor came to me, he's like, 'Robbie, you know, we need a bit more footage. We need another scene or otherwise we don't get the feature.' I was like, 'You know what, I have this great scene wrote for something else, but I think it might work. Let me see if these two guys are available.' And they were. We went down and shot the last day with just the two of them and a skeleton crew. I say a skeleton crew, it was my crew, my entire crew of four. And we got this wonderful, lovely scene that I really, really love, you know, and that... I don't know if it resonates with me but certainly my favorite scene in the film.” I can’t think of many films that can be made for $800, at least not without a lot of sweat equity and team passion. Knowing this fact made my only concern about the film seem moot, a bit of shaky camera work in some scenes, particularly when Adam is playing with the producer’s dog, Lily. In fact, most of EDEN was shot in 2012, but finished up later on closer to 2016, when it first debuted. It has since been screened around the world, at a few festivals, and in support of the Simon Community in Dublin, which work to fight homelessness. Back to the diving analogy for a bit, this has to be one of the highest difficulties, and as such, EDEN excels well beyond its means. The flipside of talking with the filmmakers is that sometimes you learn things you weren’t quite expecting. One of my favorite aspects of EDEN was the incredible scoring and soundtrack, mostly in the form of instrumental post-rock from an Irish musician named Andrew Mann. I was really excited to find out more about it, but wasn’t quite ready for the story that followed. ROBBIE: “So I went along, and we got talking to this American girl at it, who was going out with an Irish musician, and I'd happen to mention to him that I was looking for music for a film, and his name was Andrew Mann. ROBBIE: “And he went and sent me all of these pieces on, and then when I gave them to the editor, my editor rang me and he was like, 'Look, we can use this piece here, this piece...' He was literally reading my mind. And the closing song is from a friend of mine, a really great band called Keywest. If you guys check them, if you want to check them out, they are a fantastic Irish band, and there's a little bit of music from Richard Geraghty, but Andrew Mann scored mostly the entire film.” ROBBIE: “Unfortunately, Andrew Mann passed away earlier this year. It was a very complicated situation, and it was by his own hands. It was literally two weeks or three weeks after the film had gotten its theatrical release. There was a lot of, a lot of personal... very public, very personal stuff that was really out in the world, and himself and the girl he was with a very long time, had kind of taken their own lives. I can't really talk much more about it because I don't know the intricacies of what happened, you know. Really nice guy. Fantastic musician." Suicide sucks, and that’s coming from someone who suffers from anxiety and depression and has had more than one bout of suicidal thoughts. It also happens at a higher rate among those in poverty and dealing with homelessness. Mental illness isn’t necessarily something someone has but is a situation that can be brought about by the right circumstances. In these tough economic times, it’s easy to slip into that downward spiral. For anyone out there that might be having similar thoughts, please reach out to anyone and seek professional help. On a side note before we wrap up, Robbie Walsh was also an MMA fighter, Ireland’s first MMA title holder by luck of the card. You can hear more about it in the full interview on Sunday, but what’s truly inspiring is how he leveraged that experience for filmmaking. ROBBIE: “Actually, that's how I got my money to make ACES, my short film. I had no money to make it, so I fought in a cage and got some money together and made my short film ACES. I went then to get it into Cannes, and after that, it was pretty stoked about that. It was the first short I had directed, then I went on to do some coaching in boxing. A decent MMA career but I had to hang up the gloves because I was too old, too tired, and too blind." If “filmmaker does cage fighting to fund his craft” isn’t an inspiring story, I don’t know what is. EDEN is a marvelous microbudget drama dealing with homelessness in Dublin, as seen through a day in the life of one man. Constrained by a $800 budget and a quick four day shoot, the cast and crew of EDEN manage to leverage an incredible amount of a value from a very low cost, authentically held together by great acting and an excellent score. Coming in at a tight 76 minutes, EDEN is a quick, but powerful watch recommended for anyone who advocates for the homeless, or to see how great the microbudget scene can be. Rotten Tomatoes: NR Metacritic: NR One Movie Punch: 7.5/10 EDEN (2016) is not rated and is currently playing on Amazon Prime, OPPrime TV, UK Film Channel, and on VOD.

The weather has turned cold in Dublin and the Top Tier Recruitment team got to talking about what we could do to help people less fortunate than ourselves this winter. We made a decision: Instead of giving gifts this Christmas, we've decided that we will donate €100 to the Dublin Simon Community every time we're asked to fill a new vacancy (within Fintech & financial services) between now and Christmas Day. We'd love it if people shared this within the FinTech & Financial Services industries. Show notes here.
