In this episode of the XS Noize Podcast, host Mark Millar is joined by Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody — one of the most emotionally resonant voices in UK music. Gary delves into the making of The Forest Is The Path — Snow Patrol's chart-topping, critically acclaimed eighth studio album. Expansive, cinematic, and deeply reflective, the record marks a powerful creative resurgence for the band, now over 30 years into their remarkable journey. Touching on themes of grief, memory, home, and healing, the book offers a deeper look into the emotional landscape that shaped the album. Paul details how he evolved his approach for the narrative film, including his own wetsuit dive to record metallic clinks against boats in Malibu, California, in order to create a unique, journalistic feel to the music approach. How his collaborations with legendary composer Philip Glass came about for Tales from the Loop, after they both worked with documentary filmmaker Errol Morris. „Chasing Cars“ mag der bislang größte Hit für Snow Patrol gewesen sein. Der wichtigste Song aber ist „Run“, denn ohne ihn würde es die nordirisch-schottische Band heute höchstwahrscheinlich nicht mehr geben. Ein Lied, das von Liebe, Zuversicht und Rettung handelt, hat Snow Patrol im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes gerettet.

How we listen to music has changed. With streaming, social media and 15 second TikTok's it's rare we listen to a full album anymore. Sometimes, though, a body of work comes along that stops you in your tracks.  This week, Niall is joined by Gary Lightbody, lead singer and guitarist with Snow Patrol. The Irish band have just released their first album in 6 years, ‘The Forest Is The Path', which may be their most vulnerable record to date. The band approached this album in a different way than they have before, with the first lyrics coming to Gary while emerging from a numbness following the death of his father. Niall and Gary get into the process of making the album, along with Gary's relief to finally feel again after grief and putting it in writing. They also discuss their shared passion for mental health reform, with Gary's particular focus on the suicide rates in Northern Ireland, and how music is what saved him when he went through his own dark night of the soul.  This episode discusses some sensitive topics, please take care when listening. For a bonus episode of his podcast, Chris welcomes Travis frontman Fran Healy. Emerging from Glasgow in the mid 90s, and now in their fourth decade together, Travis were inspirational to a number of like-minded British guitar bands like Coldplay, Snow Patrol and Keane. Travis 2nd album, 1999's 'The Man Who', was a became a huge hit globally, fuelled by the unstoppable single 'Why Does It Always Rain On Me?'. And when the heavens opened as the band launched into that track at Glastonbury in 1999 the band found themselves plastered across newspapers and news reports, which then pushed the album to the top of the charts. But the band have also had their setbacks, not least when drummer Neil Primrose broke his neck in a freak accident... and yet, he was back behind his drum kit within 5 months.  It's a great story, and a great listen.
