David Bowie's immensely successful follow-up to Ziggy Stardust - if you only judge it by how famous the album cover is - is a bizarre story about a Ziggy disciple touring America and musing about what he sees. Maybe. Do the theater kids agree? Well find out as they talk about what might be one of Bowie's most theatrical albums, Aladdin Sane!Originally recorded December 8, 2024.

The draft year 7-13 English curriculum proposes compulsory Shakespeare for senior secondary school students. That's provoked a furious debate about the relevance of Shakespeare in this day and age - Shakespeare is important, but is it essential? Even when I was at secondary school 45 years ago, Shakespeare was not popular. One year we were studying Hamlet. So, the school organised an afternoon matinee of the play at the Mercury Theatre. The boys were so rowdy that a young Michael Hurst commented it was the worst audience he had ever had. We didn't even calm down during the sword fights. That didn't happen when we studied Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman or Thomas Beckett's Murder in the Cathedral. Those plays used language we understood and themes we could relate to. To teach you must engage and much and all as we bemoan the fall of Shakespeare, he's still so strong that his influence on the modern world will not fail. So, what will engage the kids, I don't know. This generation is less engaged than ever - so much so I had to explain who Bob Geldof was to my 26-year-old son. And speaking of which the most engagement I had in English at school was when we studied the lyrics of David Bowie's 'Time' from the Aladdin Sane album. And let's remember that in 2016 Bob Dylan won the Nobel prize in literature. Would anyone mind if he was added to the curriculum? Post script: I see that the new curriculum says that spelling and keyboard lessons for children at intermediate schools should be compulsory - you mean they're not already? How do our kids survive in this modern world?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

ALADDIN SANE – DAVID BOWIE with special guest Suzi Ronson. On 5th July 2017, The CAT Club's featured album was Bowie's 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.' Our special guest that day was the band's drummer, Woody Woodmansey. We've wanted to present the follow up record to Ziggy Stardust, the truly wonderful 'Aladdin Sane' for some time now but never seemed to get it together. Until a certain memoir was recently published . . . Suzi Fussey was working in a Beckenham hair salon in the early seventies when Mrs Jones came in for her weekly shampoo and set. After being introduced to her son David and his wife Angie, Suzi finds herself at the Bowies' bohemian apartment and is soon embroiled in their raucous world. Having crafted his iconic Ziggy Stardust hairstyle, Suzi becomes the only working woman in David's touring party and joins the Spiders from Mars as they perform around the globe. Amid the costume blunders, parties and groupies she meets her husband-to-be, Mick Ronson, and together they traverse the absurdities of life in show business, falling in with the likes of Iggy Pop, Bob Dylan and Lou Reed along the way. Dazzling and intimate, ‘Me and Mr Jones' provides not only a unique perspective on one of the most beguiling stars of our time but also a world on the cusp of cultural transformation, charting the highs and lows of life as one of the only women in the room as it happened. We were delighted that Suzi Ronson joined us to talk about her life with both David Bowie and Mick Ronson and, of course, about 'Aladdin Sane.' In the interviewer's chair for the very first time was Amanda Cook who ensured that a splendid time was by all. This event took place on 6th June 2024 in the Pigeon Loft at The Robin Hood, Pontefract, West Yorkshire.

We talk to Geoff Marsh, one of the curators of a new exhibition about the 1973 album Aladdin Sane and to Dave Robinson, aka ‘Robbo', legendary co-founder of Stiff Records.  Geoff tells us how photographer, the late Brian Duffy, created the lightning flash image of David Bowie.  That album cover has gone on to remain one of the world's three most instantly recognisable images - the other two are John Pasche's Hot Lips logo for the Rolling Stones and Hipgnosis's cover for Dark Side of the Moon.   Aladdin Sane: 50 Years, which runs at Southbank until the 28th May, celebrates the anniversary of this important cultural icon. Accompanying the exhibition are talks, live music, two nights of joyous club music and poetry. Meanwhile, Dave Robinson, who created hits for Madness, Tracey Ullman, Elvis Costello, Ian Drury, The Pogues and many more, regales us with tales of being in America as Jimi Hendrix's tour manager and putting together Bob Marley's greatest hits to create Legend, the best-selling reggae album of all time.  You can hear Dave telling his highly entertaining and improbable but true stories on his tour, We Came, We Saw, We Left – The Horse Speaks, which he's taking around the country until 15th May.   An extraordinary opportunity to listen to this conversation about the music that has survived half a century and continues to influence and inspire millions worldwide.
