Their first album release in six years, ‘The Forest is the Path' is Snow Patrol's eighth studio album, coming after 2018's ‘Wilderness'. While promoting the album on X, vocalist Gary Lightbody described the work as a “new beginning”. “We honour the past, deeply. But while we honour the past we also want to cherish the present and look to the future. So this is the beginning of something, and we are so excited to share it with you all.” Music Reviewer Estelle Clifford joined Jack Tame to give her thoughts on the release. How we listen to music has changed. With streaming, social media and 15 second TikTok's it's rare we listen to a full album anymore. Sometimes, though, a body of work comes along that stops you in your tracks. This week, Niall is joined by Gary Lightbody, lead singer and guitarist with Snow Patrol. The Irish band have just released their first album in 6 years, ‘The Forest Is The Path', which may be their most vulnerable record to date. The band approached this album in a different way than they have before, with the first lyrics coming to Gary while emerging from a numbness following the death of his father. Niall and Gary get into the process of making the album, along with Gary's relief to finally feel again after grief and putting it in writing. They also discuss their shared passion for mental health reform, with Gary's particular focus on the suicide rates in Northern Ireland, and how music is what saved him when he went through his own dark night of the soul. This episode discusses some sensitive topics, please take care when listening. 2022 has been a stellar year for music books – you'll know this if you listen to the podcast regularly, I've interviewed the authors who've penned many of the best. And though I haven't quite got around to compiling my own favourites of the year list, somewhere towards the top of said list is Exit Stage Left… The Curious Afterlife of Popstars by Nick Duerden. Nick's book came out in paperback last week, it includes new interviews with the likes of – deep breath - Bob Geldof, Shaun Ryder, Robbie Williams, Roisin Murphy, Stewart Copeland, Billy Bragg, Wendy James, Alex Kapranos, Joan Armatrading, Leo Sayer, Gary Lightbody, Lisa Maffia, Tim Booth, Bill Drummond, Rufus Wainwright, David Gray, and Justin Hawkins - so I thought it high time I got him on the podcast to talk about what happens when the bright light of fame fades… drug addiction, bankruptcy, depression and divorce… but truth be told, what Nick found out in researching the book, and what I found out here, wasn't anywhere near as miserable as you might imagine. A lot of what follows is inspiring stuff. Heads up; Some of the audio is a bit scratchy in this episode – Nick's wearing one of those headset microphones that makes him look a little bit like Madonna in the eighties. But I haven't had many people on the podcast more interesting than he this year. This was a conversation I really enjoyed and I hope you do too. Join the Substack!

For fans of music books from David Hepworth, Pete Paphides, Bob Stanley and Craig Brown, as well as thought-provoking human interest stories like Moondust by Andrew Smith, and books by Jon Ronson, Louis Theroux and Stuart Maconie. A quirky, thought-provoking look at the curious afterlife of pop stars. Nick Duerden has spent many years interviewing the most famous musicians on the planet. Without exception, they are at their most interesting when they've peaked, and when they are on their way down. In many ways, this is when these former idols are at their most heroic, too, because they reveal themselves not only to be humane and sensitive, but also still driven to create, to fulfil their lingering dreams, to refuse to live quietly. Some sustain themselves on the nostalgia circuit. Others continue to beaver away in the studio, no longer Abbey Road so much as the garden shed. The desire for adulation is a light that never goes out. We live in a culture obsessed by the notion of fame—the heedless pursuit of it, the almost obligatory subsequent fallout. But what's it like to actually achieve it, and what's it like when fame abruptly passes, and shifts, as it does, onto someone else? These are tales of heroin addiction, bankruptcy, depression, divorce—but also of optimism, a genuine love of the craft, humility and hope. All of which makes Exit Stage Left a fascinating, laugh-out-loud funny and often shocking look at what happens when the brightest of stars fall down to earth. Featuring brand-new interviews with the likes of: Bob Geldof, Shaun Ryder, Robbie Williams, Roisin Murphy, Stewart Copeland, Billy Bragg, Wendy James, Alex Kapranos, Joan Armatrading, Leo Sayer, Gary Lightbody, Lisa Maffia, Tim Booth, Bill Drummond, Rufus Wainwright, David Gray and Justin Hawkins.

Swift re-records the 2012 album on which she first embraced synth-pop, tweaking songs and adding others: a mix of saccharine fluff and superb keepers. After Fearless earlier this spring, Taylor Swift reaches the second instalment of her project to re-record (and regain ownership over) the six albums she released for label Big Machine, which were apparently sold out from under her to an old foe. Held up as a classic, 2012's Red is one half some of the greatest pop songs of all time – I Knew You Were Trouble is the rare pop-EDM crossover that still stands up, the chorus drops hitting like bratty stomps of frustration at her own naivety; We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together is a euphoric cheerleader chant so ingratiating you wonder how nobody came up with it before – and one half schmaltzy stuffing, including collaborations with Ed Sheeran and Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody. Hey Everyone. This is GM John... and It's Music Story Time. In early 2019 I was very depressed about the Climate Crisis. I was also in a creative space and desperate to vent my frustration at how we had completely failed to take care of this planet and each other. I was inspired by Snow Patrol's 2018 song, “Life on Earth”. It hit me hard and really nailed the anger I was feeling. Turns out I wasn't alone. In a 2018 Billboard article, Snow Patrol singer songwriter Gary Lightbody was asked why he thought the song was the best he'd ever written. Watch the video and read the full story at KORCFM.com
Season 3 takes one last look at the past before heading into the future. This is perhaps the last episode of the season that's exclusively concerned with the administrative duties of early-season outings. We check in with almost everybody on the map, excluding maybe Bran and Rickon. Hot Pie says goodbye (at least for now), Jon Snow is told that he must climb the Wall, there's a huge turning point for Jaime, and we even get a brief visit from the lead singer of Snow Patrol. Best Of Belfast: Stories of local legends from Northern Ireland
Gary Lightbody is a singer-songwriter from Bangor, Northern Ireland and the lead singer of Snow Patrol. Across their 25-year journey, Snow Patrol have sold over 17 million albums, picked up over 1 billion global streams and played on almost every stage known to man. Their recent Reworked Album and Tour gave fans from all over the world the opportunity to experience new renditions of some of the bands greatest hits (and a few new absolute bangers too). But it also gave long-time listeners the chance to pause and reflect on just how much has changed over the years. (Yes, Chasing Cars is almost 15-years-old — and fun fact — was recently voted the most played song of the 21st century on UK radio). So, in today's conversation with Gary, we do just that: pause and reflect on the years that have gone before, and what they can maybe tell us about the future. We cover topics like: Gary's first memories Snow Patrol's 10-year grind to success The importance of being specific while writing songs How to keep our heads right during Quarantine And Gary's greatest successes/challenges along the way This will without a doubt be one of the fastest hours of your life and is full of so much genuine joy and stories worth sharing. Check it out. // To see a photo of today's guest please visit https://bestofbelfast.org/stories/gary-lightbody-snow-patrol Best Of Belfast is Northern Ireland's #1 Interview Podcast. What do you do when you’ve spent your whole adult life striving to become a successful musician, and then when you finally reach that breakthrough you discover that success still doesn’t fix that creeping sadness you’ve felt since you were a kid? That was the situation Gary Lightbody found himself in when hits such as Run and Chasing Cars catapulted Snow Patrol to the top of the charts and into some of the biggest venues in the world. In this conversation Gary talks openly about that struggle and how he’s managed to, in his words, become great friends with his demons. We also talk about what it was like growing up in Bangor in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, the impact Nirvana had on him as a kid, his journey to sobriety, how his father’s battle with dementia has affected him and much, much more.

Well Slackers. I hope your conjunctivitis has cleared up since the last time you were here. It’s looking pretty good! Welcome to all the new listeners. On this podcast we play class artists’ early demos and we get a good chin wag in along the way. This week’s guest is Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol. He’s legit seen it all in the world of music and has traversed the highs and lows of everything that comes with it, which places him in a very apt position for me to badger him with questions. The version of Run he plays on the podcast was dug out of one of the band's attics and hasn’t been heard before so should be special for the Snow Patrol fan boys and girls. Please give the podcast a little rating or a review if you enjoy it. This Friday (16th Nov 2018) the Slacker Live Music Night will be at Portrush at the Atlantic Sessions on Northern Ireland.
