Music and charity go hand-in-hand this time of year, and nowhere is that more evident than in Shannon. This December 24th, Cuppa Tea TV presents 'Youth in Music 74,' a busking event dedicated to supporting Focus Ireland. Whether you're a local performer looking to sign up on arrival or a shopper looking to support a vital cause, it promises to be a highlight of Christmas Eve. To find out more, Alan Morrissey was joined by Damien O'Rouke from Cuppa Tea TV and musician Jim Ryall.
There will be a record number of children in homelessness this Christmas in Ireland. For the kids living in a Focus Ireland-run centre in Finglas, Santa arrived a little early to give these homeless children the gift of a book. Eithne Dodd reports.
According to the latest figures from Focus Ireland, almost 290 children in Clare and Limerick will face Christmas without a home this year — part of a record 5,274 children now homeless across the country. As the charity renews its Christmas Appeal and No Child Without A Home campaign, it's calling on the Government to act and urging the public to support families in crisis. Alan Morrissey was joined by Lorraine Toner, Head of National Community Fundraising with Focus Ireland to discuss this further.
Klearcom, a leading provider of global contact centre testing solutions, has announced that it has surpassed 4,000 selection box donations to Waterford Food Bank. The Waterford-based company has donated selection boxes to Waterford Food Bank every year since 2022 and was on-site on the 18th of December to assist with packing efforts. All donations went directly to children in the local area through the charity's distribution partners. Waterford Food Bank, a non funded non profit programme of Buíon Phort Láirge (formerly Waterford Area Partnership), was established in 2017 to eradicate food poverty for some of Waterford's most disadvantaged communities. The majority of food parcels are delivered to St. Vincent de Paul service users but those in need can also be referred through Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) and Focus Ireland. All food parcels are given to families around Waterford City at no cost to the end user. Klearcom has been a long-standing supporter of the charity, with staff regularly participating in volunteering activities and awareness campaigns, including organising and distributing food parcels at the packing centre. Mark Rohan, Chief Operating Officer, Klearcom said: "At Klearcom, we believe it's now more important than ever to give back and support our local community. As Christmas can be a challenging time for many families, we chose selection boxes in the hope that they will spark joy for children and their loved ones in Waterford. I want to extend a heartfelt thank-you to our incredible staff for their generosity and commitment, and to Waterford Food Bank for their ongoing partnership and invaluable work." Karen Glancy, Foodbank Administrator, Waterford Food Bank said: "While giving back is important all year around, charities are often overrun with people seeking help during the festive period. I have seen firsthand the difference a donation such as this makes to our local community. It's important to remember that even the smallest things can make a big impact and I want to thank Klearcom for their endless generosity in making this possible." See more stories here. A Clare homeless charity has branded comments by the Taoiseach on homelessness as "disappointing" and says they ignore the "deeply traumatic" effects of living in emergency accommodation. Micheál Martin has come under fire for claiming homelessness figures are "a bit like hospital waiting lists" in that "it's not the number on the waiting list; it's how fast you get treated". Focus Ireland has called the statement a "poor choice of words", saying "people go to hospitals because they are sick; they do not have to become homeless". Head of Policy and Communications at Novas, which operates a small family hub in Ennis, Una Burns, has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons regardless of how much time people spend with homeless services, the experience often leaves long-lasting wounds.

A new report from Focus Ireland and Trinity College has revealed that the vast majority of homelessness funding is still going to emergency accommodation, while investment in prevention remains low. Please join us on patreon.com/tortoiseshack In this Reboot Republic, Rory dissects Budget 2025 with Michael Taft, economist , and Susanne Rogers of Social Justice Ireland and they find more tokenism than transformation, We discuss how the Budget was actually regressive - those on higher incomes gained more - it failed to take transformative action on housing, health or child poverty. Michael points to a broad public retrofitting scheme as one measure that would have used the billions for transformation. Rory is also joined by Mike Allen of Focus Ireland who highlights how shockingly there was not one mention of homelessness in the Budget, and no increase in funding for preventing homelessness. We also discuss the socially divisive narrative spread by the Taoiseach and others that are trying to deflect attention away from Government policy failure and blame immigrants and others vulnerable for homelessness. We always enjoy your feedback, and please share the podcast around. Thank you for listening. We discuss the traumatic impact of homelessness on children and families, and what are the solutions: including a re-instating of the ban on no fault evictions and allocating priority to families homeless in social housing.
