For years, actor/comedian Tim Progosh has wondered: with all the great comedians Canada has produced over the years, why is there no Canadian Comedy Hall of Fame?Progosh has done more than wonder. He's made it happen. For more than 20 years, his efforts have been stymied by celebrations cut short by the 9/11 attacks, by deals falling through during a recession, by COVID and actor strike interruptions. Who knew saluting the funny was such a serious and challenging business? On this podcast episode, Progosh tells how -- while still set on an eventual brick and mortar venue -- he was able to gain the political smarts to get a virtual Hall off the ground. This year's inductees include Eugene Levy and Martin Short, the cast of SCTV as a troupe, Jim Carrey and Red Green Show star and creator Steve Smith and even late great Hilarious House of Frightenstein comedy chameleon Billy Van. Going even further back, early film star Marie Dressler and radio's The Happy Gang also made the Hall. Festivities and live comedy shows take place in Hamilton, Ont., Feb. 21 through 24. Go see the shows (featuring Ron James, Shaun Majumder and other comedians) but first listen as Progosh salutes his Canadian comedy heroes on this week's laugh out loud episode of brioux.tv: the podcast.
What would prompt a city councillor from Toronto to request an audience with Hamilton City Council? Perhaps a warning for Hamilton regarding who should run our LRT? Guest: Josh Matlow, Toronto City Councillor - We've hit a record high in the cost of protecting our members of Parliament. Why is this and is it warranted? Guest: Phil Gurski, President of Borealis Threat and Risk Consulting, former CSIS analyst - Research has been done into the relation between police budgets and the rate of crime in Canadian cities. From the sound of it, an increase to one doesn't necessarily mean a decrease in the other. Guest: Melanie Seabrook, lead author on the study, and a researcher at the Upstream Lab, St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto - This year's list of nominees for the Canadian Comedy Hall of Fame is amazingly star studded with Jim Carrey, Eugene Levy and Martin Short among some of them. Guest: Shaun Majumder, Comedian and host of the Canadian Comedy Hall of Fame Gala Awards
It's looking like our government is going to do more of the same, increase spending and take the deficit up to a new high. Guest: Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director, Canadian Taxpayers Federation - Who is actually making the decisions on post-secondary campuses regarding what's hate speech? Is that same debacle being reflected in the classroom? Guest: John Bonnett, Associate Professor, Department of History, Brock University - We've been talking about the chances of Shohei Ohtani joining the Toronto Blue Jays and there's often an element of facetiousness present but could it actually happen? Guest: Mike Wilner, Baseball Columnist for the Toronto Star - The Canadian Comedy Hall of Fame will be inducting multiple Hamiltonians as part of its upcoming class with Eugene Levy and Martin Short being only some of the big names being honoured. Guest: Eric Johnston, Hamilton-based Stand Up comedian performing at the Canadian Comedy Hall of Fame festivities
Comic Paula Poundstone, a regular panelist on NPR’s “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me,” spent 30 minutes with Tom Hodson stating her opinions on multiple topics from computers, to writing, to her style of comedy, to unusual dog breeds. Besides being a Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me regular, Poundstone had a role in last year’s Pixar movie “Inside Out.” She also is currently writing her second book to be published by Algonquin next January. While doing all that, she still travels the country doing her unique form of stand-up. She said in every show about one-third of it is improvised with interactions between her and her audience. “I never do the same show twice,” Poundstone said. “Every performance is different and unique. It is very interactive.” Poundstone joked that she has the worst record on Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me quizzes because her competitors “cheat” and are on “steroids.” She says her preparation for the show is in direct relationship to the upheavals at her home in a given week. If things are in turmoil then she doesn’t prepare as much as when things are going smoothly, she added. On a serious note, she decries the use of computers in elementary schools and says that we have become “addicted” to electronics. She says that this reliance has a negative impact on children and their brains. Poundstone also described her writing technique and how writing a book is different and much more difficult than writing comedy routines. Poundstone has had an illustrious career. She was the first woman to win the cable ACE Award for Best Stand-up back in 1992 and in 1993, she was the first woman to perform standup at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. She has been recognized as one of Comedy Central’s 100 greatest stand-ups of all time and in 2010, she was selected for the Comedy Hall of Fame.
