PRESS REVIEW – Wednesday, April 9: Papers around the world react to US President Donald Trump's tariffs and discuss the impact they could have on the economy. Also, fighting continues to wreak havoc in Myanmar as locals set up fundraisers. Meanwhile, locals of Rabat and San Sebastian are not happy with the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Finally, a German farmer finds his wedding ring in his cow's stomach. Papers around the world are reacting to Trump's tariffs. The French paper La Tribune says it is "America against the world". The Swiss daily Le Temps has a cartoon by Chapatte on its front page, making light of what a post-tariff world might look like. Germany papers are also anticipating the consequences of a trade war. The Frankfurter Allgemeine headlines with a "fear of the Chinese wave". The article describes how Europe could be at risk of a wave of Chinese products, previously destined for the US, which could now be diverted to Europe. Politico also touches on this potential "flood". It says that European officials have reached out to China, asking them to help track the expected wave of Chinese products on European markets. Trump and his tariffs make headlines in Brazil too, which talks of "worsening global uncertainty". Africanews has an article on its website looking at the impact the tariffs might have on jobs in South Africa. In Asia, the Japanese Times says the country is appointing negotiators. Japanese diplomats have said they will continue their efforts to keep dialogue open.Turning to Myanmar, fighting has continued there despite the ceasefire, devastating communities as they recover from the earthquake 10 days ago. The Times has an exclusive piece demonstrating the extent of the damage caused by the fighting during relief efforts. The French paper La Croix, for its part, focuses on hope among the carnage.FIFA has been rocked by controversy as the 2030 World Cup organised in Morocco, Portugal and Spain faces local resistance. Maroc Diplomatique says that Morocco's heritage is at stake. The Spanish paper El Pais reports that Morocco's push for modernisation has razed neighbourhoods. But it's not just Moroccans who are upset. In Spain, residents of the Basque city of San Sebastian have written to FIFA saying they don't want to host the World Cup at all, according to the Guardian.Meanwhile, papers are reacting to the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday night. Star Sport headlines with "Rice Crispies", referring of course to Declan Rice's two goals against Real Madrid. The Sun says "Bend it like Declan". Spanish paper AS says that Real Madrid "are forced to perform another miracle" if they want to continue to the semi-finals. In Italy, Tuttosport rejoices, clearly pleased with their 2-1 win over Bayern Munich. Finally, we end with a strange story in The Telegraph about a German farmer who was reunited with his wedding ring after one of his cows accidentally gobbled it up!You can catch our press review every morning on France 24 at 7:20am and 9:20am (Paris time), from Monday to Friday.

Send us a textHi everybody and welcome to today's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. Today, we have a returning guest: published author Rachael Wesley, who–as of today–has released her memoir, “Second Set Chances,” published by Vine Leaves Press. The last time Rachael was on Attendance Bias, about three years ago, she was working on the sixth draft of what would become Second Set Chances. At the time, she didn't have much to say about the memoir, as it was still very much a work in progress. Instead, we focused on her favorite genre of writing–Creative Nonfiction–and we went deep into talking about the version of “Simple” from 8/29/14 at Dick's.But this time is a bit different. Rachael is back, and Second Set Chances is available at her website, RachaelWesley.com and at VineLeavesPress.com. You'll hear how Rachael took these last three years to make her story become a fully published work. Just as importantly for THIS podcast, you'll also hear us break down Down with Disease into Carini from December 29. 2013 at Madison Square Garden; an incredible sequence that capped off the best year of 3.0 to that point, and two jams that hold up 12 years later. So let's join Rachael to talk about Second Set chances, DNA strands, and the best flavors of La Croix as we discuss Down with Disease into Carini from Madison Square Garden on December 29, 2013.

PRESS REVIEW – Monday, April 7: French and European papers react to Marine Le Pen's rally in Paris following her sentence which bans her from public office. Next, Donald Trump's tariffs continue to send shockwaves around the world. Also, Australia's upcoming elections are seen under a climate change lense in the papers. Finally, very old tortoises become first-time parents in Philadelphia. French papers are covering Sunday's National Rally gathering in Paris in support of Marine Le Pen following her conviction for embezzlement. Libération calls the rally a "flop" after it saw a relatively small turnout. L'Humanité, meanwhile, calls it a farce. Le Pen had initially announced a demonstration of force, but the paper says the rally did not live up to expectations. The Catholic paper La Croix says that Le Pen has started a "reconquering campaign". A strategy that the paper calls risky, and which could be a bad start for her "banned" presidential campaign. The French papers are not the only ones to be carrying this story. The German broadsheet Frankfurter Allgemeine headlines "With a greeting from Europe's right wing populists". The British paper The Times uses a Le Pen quote in its headline, in which she claims she is France's Martin Luther King. All the papers are continuing to talk about Trump's tariffs. The Guardian brings us the key questions: what happens next and how might the world respond? PBS reports that the White House has been contacted by 50 countries for negotiations. French paper L'Opinion says Europe's dilemma is whether it should negotiate or retaliate. Politico says that French authorities have suggested taxing American digital services. Papers in Asia, meanwhile, are also mulling over responses. The Straits Times tells us that Malaysia wants a coordinated regional response. In Africa, Zimbabwe has opted for a slightly different tactic. The Independent Online says that Zimbabwe has announced it will suspend all tariffs on imported goods from the US. The move is intended to be a gesture of goodwill towards Donald Trump. Some interesting articles are coming out of Australia in the run-up to elections there in May. The Times describes how Cyclone Alfred might have changed the course of the Australian elections. The article says that although the cyclone was not as destructive as planned, it "may have wrecked Liberal leader Peter Dutton's chances of pulling off an historic election victory". Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, meanwhile, has extended his lead in the polls. An opinion piece in the Guardian criticises the absence of climate change and mass extinction in political discussions. It says that although the climate crisis is one of the main concerns of Australians, it is ignored by politicians. Finally, we end with some wholesome news from the Associated Press. Two Galapagos tortoises living at Philadelphia Zoo have become parents for the first time, at almost 100 years old.You can catch our press review every morning on France 24 at 7:20am and 9:20am (Paris time), from Monday to Friday.

PRESS REVIEW – Tuesday, April 1: We bring you all the reactions from the French and international press after French far-right leader Marine Le Pen was found guilty of embezzlement and banned from running for public office. The immediate ban means she'll likely be ineligible for the 2027 French presidential elections. The international press, meanwhile, turn their attention to Jordan Bardella, the president of the National Rally and Le Pen's likely successor. We also look at reactions from the European far right. There's plenty of press reaction to Le Pen's conviction for embezzlement and her immediate, five-year ban on running for public office. One word from the French paper La Croix sums it up: "Ineligible". The paper says this court ruling is a huge shock for the far-right National Rally party and will throw the 2027 presidential election into disarray. La Croix hails what it sees as an inherently "legal decision", even if it has political ramifications. It adds that the ruling is based on laws and texts voted years ago. The paper expresses alarm at the response by the party's leader Jordan Bardella, who has decried the "execution" of French democracy. La Croix reminds readers that the justice system is for everyone, without exception. In the leftwing press, Libération says GUILTY in big, bold print on its front page. The communist paper, L'Humanité, revisits a slogan from the Front National, the previous name of the National Rally. The slogan was "clean hands, heads held high." It's corrected by L'Humanité to read: "dirty hands, heads hanging low". The editor of L'Humanité calls Le Pen's conviction a victory for democracy and the state of law and slams the reactions from the far right and the "Bolloré media". This is a reference to media magnate Vincent Bolloré, who is close to the far right. The latter have denounced a conspiracy against them.Speaking of the conservative media, Le Journal du Dimanche, a weekly paper that is owned by Vincent Bolloré, calls Monday's court ruling the day that destroyed Le Pen's presidential destiny. The paper laments what it sees as 20 years of her career being "annihilated" by one legal decision. The right-wing paper L'Opinion, meanwhile, calls it a political earthquake. Kak, the cartoonist, sees Le Pen hanging from a hook with the hammer of justice ready to nail her in. The paper's editor warns of "a huge moment of democratic danger" and says the court decision will paradoxically serve to feed populism. Le Parisien says it could transform Le Pen's right-hand man Bardella into a valued asset of the party. There is also lots of focus on Bardella in the international press. Politico notes that he has weathered nearly a decade in politics without losing his lustre. He is "polished, composed to a fault, with boy-next-door good looks and a carefully practiced smile". Bardella is a TikTok sensation and the only politician on the list of 50 most popular personalities in France compiled by a French newspaper. His popularity and the rise of the far right represent a "potential sea change in European politics", Politico says. For The Telegraph, the far right will survive this court ruling. It points to Bardella as a likely successor. He is "slavishly loyal" to her and recently published a bestselling memoir about growing up in an urban slum. However, his youth could be a hindrance. If one day he makes it to the Élysee palace, the irony would be that the anti-immigrant party's first president is ... the son of immigrants. In any case, far-right figures from Europe have rushed to Le Pen's defence. Italy's Matteo Salvini and the Netherlands' Geert Wilders have been quick to defend her and condemn the ruling with the slogan Je Suis Marine, which spreading on social media, according to a report from our FRANCE 24 web team. Hungary's Viktor Orban also used the slogan on social media to express his support for Le Pen. Paolo Lombardi, an Italian cartoonist, has reimagined Orban as Le Pen. Finally, Marten Wolterink, a Dutch illustrator, evokes the hypocrisy of the far right: Vive L'Europe as long as the money keeps coming in, embezzling funds but otherwise inherently Eurosceptic.

Welcome to the episode of The Lindsey Anderson Show. I'm so excited for today's guest, Mr. Darren LaCroix. In this episode, we dive into the power of stage time and the habit of showing up even when it's uncomfortable. We talk about how taking risks and facing failure head-on can fuel growth in both public speaking and business. Guest IntroductionToday's guest is Darren LaCroix, an internationally recognized speaker and coach. He outshone 25,000 contestants from 14 countries to become the world champion of public speaking. Darren is the author of two books—Laugh and Get Rich and The Speaker's Edge—and he holds the unique distinction of being the only speaker in the world who is both an accredited, certified speaking professional and a world champion of public speaking. He's known for his mantra, “Stage time, stage time, stage time,” and his relentless commitment to doing the work—even when it means looking bad. Darren's approach offers transformational insights that are essential for online coaches and for anyone looking to scale their business. How to Build a Profitable Speaking Business - Key TakeawaysConsistent Practice Is Crucial: “Any day you don't get on stage is a day you don't grow.”Failure Is Fuel: I embraced failure after a business setback and learned that having no ego opens the door to growth.Mentorship Matters: Mentors saw my willingness to do the work, even when I was a nervous, wannabe comedian. The Power of Stage Time: Driving two and a half hours for a five-minute open mic set taught me that showing up, even in less-than-ideal circumstances, builds resilience.Transformative Storytelling: Use your personal experiences—your struggles, failures, and breakthroughs—to create stories that captivate and transform your audience, and ultimately, help you scale your business.Overcoming Fear and FailureI started as a shy, introverted wannabe comedian with zero confidence. My comedy mentors said, “Any day you don't get on stage is a day you don't grow.”After a business failure, I had no ego—just the drive to learn and improve.Despite the risk of embarrassment, I embraced every open mic night as a chance to evolve. These experiences not only transformed my public speaking but also shaped my approach as a business coach for coaches, teaching me to overcome fear and build resilience.Growth Through Stage TimeI drove two and a half hours just to secure five minutes on stage.Even when my high school buddy called me “stupid” for chasing my dream, my mentors recognized my determination. The consistent habit of showing up, regardless of the outcome, is what built my foundation. This is a core principle in transformational coaching and scaling an online business—consistency creates growth.Transition from Comedy to Public SpeakingI learned that while comedy clubs were great for initial failures, they weren't the right fit for my soul.Finding Toastmasters was a game changer—a warm, encouraging space where I could build my public speaking skills during the day.I joined multiple clubs to “quadruple my failure rate” and maximize stage time opportunities. This transition is a prime example of transformational coaching in action, illustrating how real-world challenges can prepare you for scaling your online coaching business. The Art of StorytellingA mentor once told me: “Stop trying to find that story that launches your speaking career. Instead, take the stories you already have and make them so good someone will pay to hear them.”A good story starts with who you were—your visuals, your emotions—and then takes the audience on a journey...
To mark the 20th anniversary of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P), this year we are featuring a special series of interviews with experts, practitioners, academics and civil society and human rights defenders who will reflect on conceptual and operational development of R2P over the past two decades, as well as the impact of R2P and atrocity prevention on their work. In this episode, we sat down with Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations since 2017. He shares insights into his evolving role and discusses R2P's influence on UN peacekeeping missions, particularly in civilian protection. Under-Secretary-General Lacroix also reflects on key challenges, lessons learned and the recent shifts in multilateralism and their impact on mission mandates.

According to Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the Under-Secretary-General of Peace Operations, there are many good reasons for increasing the number of women peacekeepers in UN Missions.UN News's Anshu Sharma spoke to Mr. Lacroix at the first-ever Conference for Women Peacekeepers, held in the Indian capital New Delhi on 24 and 25 February, where he was representing the United Nations. The Under-Secretary-General argued that changing the gender balance benefits the work environment in Peacekeeping Missions, improving conduct and discipline.Ms. Sharma began by asking him why it was important to make the trip to New Delhi, and what was achieved.

Join me for my next live video in the appLet's get into it. I've never done a live on Substack before, but I thought it would be fun and I've been wanting to do them more.So I'm going to just tell you about a few things that I got today.I went to Surdyks and it had been a while since I'd been there and I was glad to revisit them - on their 90th Anniversary! They are a local store in Minneapolis and I am a big fan and I bought some thingsthat I wanted to tell you about. The first one is a product that is made in Minnesota. It's called Pommeau and it is from Milk and Honey. And it is the most delicious like honey apple Brandy liqueur. And what I do with it is I will pair it with whiskey or with rum.So I might have like an ounce and a half of whiskey or an ounce and a half of rumand then an ounce of this and I have it on the rocks andAnd it's just a delightful after-dinnery type drink. So milk and honey, I was out of it.I was happy to see it was back on the stores. Here is a new product that I'm excited about.I got it because it's from Vietnam and I was just there, fun!Song Cai the name of the gin. They had three different kinds of these Vietnamese gins at SurdyksAnd I happened to chat with one of the folks there and they said this one was their favorite. So I have not tried it yet, but can you see how pretty the bottle is inside it?It just looks amazing. So I'm going to go ahead and give this a try.I think I'll, it's floral gins are kind of good with tonic or with club soda.So I'm excited about trying that.I will report back.Something that is not alcohol, but I do have two of those left too.It is Ryze Mushroom CoffeeThis is something that I'm nervous about. Now they say that mushrooms are super good for you.And I absolutely believe that, but Could this product replace like my love of coffee or is it just like another thingto give you more of a wellness supplement? There's 2000 milligrams of mushrooms in here, which is a lot.So what you do with it,and I haven't done it yet,is you apparently take a tablespoon of this and then eight to 10 ounces of hot orcold water and you can ice it if you want to or hot.from 9-11 on MyTalk 107.1 and Ill chat about it with Stephanie March So I'm going to do this in the morning tomorrow before my radio show. It's called Ryse and there's 30 servings in here. It's from Massachusetts and there's 15 calories in a tablespoon. So it's low cal, which is fine, but we'll have to see how I feel about the mushroom coffee.Okay.Also,I got this at Christmas time and Beauty Counter was, all the rageand I don't know all the things that happened, but it was like a woman started the company and then she enlisted all these peopleto sell it and it was a great product. Then someone bought it like an investment company and apparently trashed the company,This product in particular is a Beauty Counter Hydrating Body lotion and it'sbut somehow it's back. This product in particular is a hydrating lotion.Okay, at Surdyks today, they had a wine that is from Croatia. It is called Plavac Bura.It is made with Plavac Mali grapes. It is called Plavac Bura. And it is a very delicious red table wine. And I also noticed it at my friend Leslie's place, Sip Better WinesI got this at Surdyks - I have noticed this at Total Wine too. This is like a $19 bottle of wine and it is fantastic for the value. It is Croatian. You'll find it kind of in the weird section where sometimes the best wines are.But I would like you guys to try this.I just love this wine.Another wine and I have only found this at Surdyks before.I'm going to be bringing it to a party tomorrow.a,drier fruitier kind of bubbly effervescent type of white, that's not like full on champagne. It's not probably like that, but just has a tiny bubble.A Gruner Vertliner is a good wine for you to try.And this is from Austria, Weingut BrundlmayerI really like the wines that they have from Austria at SurdyksBut when I hear about organics, it makes me happy. So this is something that you would have with like a fish,Or if you're someone that likes a Sauvignon Blanc, but you just want to try something a little bit different,I'd highly recommend this. And then last but not least, La Croix.Okay, right.Everybody loves a good La Croix.I don't really love like the weird little flavors of some of these soda things, but I do like this Limoncello La Croix. It has like a vanilla taste almost to it and a little hint of lemon. It is still no calorie, so it's nothing, but it has some weird sweetener stuff in it.Let's face facts. They put chemicals in these things.I don't know why, but it tastes good.So this is the LaCroix. What I like to do actually, and that's here,is I take one of these cans and a plain can so that it tempers down the flavoring alittle bit, but it still tastes good. And then last but not least, I was on Jason's show today and this darling couple.I ran out of there because I had a meeting. And when I came back, they had left this on my bag of my Jason show things. And it is says taste buds on there. It is adorable, a little embroidered tea towel. As you know, I did a textile, a class at textile center and it was super fun. They have really great classes there. If you are a Minnesota person and you want toget your needling skills going. So you guys, that's it.My first live on Substack.I would like to do more.I'm also considering like maybe another format where I talk with someone else. But if this is something that you liked or you would like to see more of,I could even do like cooking things that are live.I just decided I would try it today since I had the good hair and I was alone withjust little Stanley here tonight. For dinner,we're going to be having the spring roll in a bowl that I made on Jason's showtoday that I marinated some carrots in a fish sauce that I put on my spring roll ina bowl, and it made the entire Fox Studio smell like stinky fish. But it's delicious, and that's what I'm going to be having for dinner tonight with a glass of this white...that I'll be having. And then in the morning, I'm going to try the mushroom coffee so you can tune in.We'll probably talk about it during the top two an hour or two, which is at 10.05 exactly. And if you want to hear what I thought about the mushroom coffee, feel free to tune in tomorrow.Otherwise, have a great weekend. It's supposed to be super nice.I'm very excited about that.I am going to be sitting with my seed catalogs.Planning for some of my seeds because I've got to get things planted. And if you follow along, you know that I garden in a very cold northern place that I only have about 50 to60 days with the seeds to get them to do anything. So I'm going to be getting my seeds going in the next couple of weeks. If you have any early plants like early tomatoes that you recommend or anythingthat you've tried and you want to pass that along,I'm always open to new gardening ideas.Thank you for being here.Thank you for following along on Substack.I started my Substack about a year and a half ago.It is just a joy.I love it.I love spending Sunday mornings writing it.I think about all of your faces and like what recipes I want to share. And it really just gives me joy.So thanks for following along.I hope that you guys have a great night and we'll try and do Substacks again if you like it.Thanks.Bye.Stephanie's Dish Newsletter is a reader-supported publication. When JD Vance used “drinking Diet Mountain Dew” to joke about how liberals are too easily offended and quick to point out what they perceive to be racist behavior, the large campaign event crowd barely applauded. But it wasn't because JD Vance is weird (and clearly not a comedian), the joke went straight over the head of mostly everyone because it was packed with multilayered symbolism. Regardless, it got me thinking about how politics and consumer packaged goods oftentimes get mixed together knowingly (and unknowingly). As an example, did you know conservatives prefer drinking A&W Root Beer compared to liberals with LaCroix? Or that liberals are more likely to eat plant-based meat and conservatives prefer sausage and hot dogs? What do both political parties agree on…that advertisements are a waste of their time!
