It is quite interesting to see women lead the charge in revolutionizing regenerative agriculture, which is a male-dominated space. They are bringing a brand-new approach to raising awareness about social justice, gaining mostly the attention and interest of youth. Corinna Bellizzi chats with Stephanie Anderson, an award-winning journalist, who utilizes storytelling to bring regenerative farming practices to the mainstream. She explains why diversity is needed to minimize soil disturbance, make nutritious food easily accessible to the public, and empower local farmers and businesses. Stephanie also discusses how to go through the challenges of transitioning to regenerative agriculture, creating a better perception of profit, and voting for pro-environment politicians.About Guest:Stephanie Anderson is the author of From the Ground Up: The Women Revolutionizing Regenerative Agriculture (The New Press, 2024). Dr. Robyne Hanley-Dafoe Shares Why Resilience Is About More Than Bouncing Back

Small Changes Big Shifts with Dr. Michelle Robin

What if resilience is not just about bouncing back but also about building forward? Dr. Robyne invites us to rethink resilience as a set of daily practices, not a fixed trait, and she brings decades of research and a deeply personal story to the conversation. Through insights on nervous system regulation, the transformative power of hope, and the role of humor, she illustrates how small, intentional shifts can make a big difference. Whether you're navigating personal challenges or seeking to foster a stronger sense of community, this episode offers practical, heartfelt advice to help you show up for the hard parts of life with grace and strength. Key Takeaways: Resilience isn't something you're born with—it's built through small, consistent actions. Learn how "sweating the small stuff well" lays a foundation for navigating life's challenges. Understanding that tough moments are often temporary can help you embrace "learning shifts" and see challenges as opportunities for growth. True resilience includes connection—finding your "3 a.m. people" and leaning into the support of others can make the journey less overwhelming. Hope is a muscle that can be strengthened through positive habits, such as seeking joy-filled content, practicing gratitude, and surrounding yourself with uplifting influences. Humor isn't just entertainment—it's a physiological tool that helps manage stress, release tension, and create moments of reprieve during difficult times.   About Dr. Robyne Hanley-Dafoe: Described as one of the most sought-after, engaging, thought-provoking and truly transformative international speakers and scholars in her field, Dr. Robyne Hanley-Dafoe is a multi-award-winning education and psychology instructor, author, and resiliency expert. She specializes in resiliency, navigating stress and change, personal wellness in the workplace, and optimal performance - both personal and organizational. With nearly two decades of university teaching and research experience and as a two-time TEDx speaker, Dr. Robyne continues to create accessible and relatable materials while offering practical strategies that are realistic and sustainable. Dr. Robyne and her team have developed innovative programming and open educational resources that are readily shared across a multitude of industries. While working alongside some of the most influential organizations across the world, she has delivered nearly 1,000 keynotes and workshops since just March 2020. Dr. Robyne expands upon this work in her online community Anchor Labs, where leaders can learn strategies for resilience. Dr. Robyne also co-hosts a weekly podcast with Juno-nominated singer and songwriter Peter Katz titled In Time, where the scientist meets the artist to explore big areas around showing up in every aspect of your life. Dr. Robyne was named a 2022 Nautilus Award recipient with her debut book, Calm Within The Storm: A Pathway to Everyday Resiliency. Her second book, Stress Wisely: How to Be Well in an Unwell World was released June 20, 2023.   Connect with Dr. Michelle and Bayleigh at: https://smallchangesbigshifts.com hello@smallchangesbigshifts.com https://www.linkedin.com/company/smallchangesbigshifts https://www.facebook.com/SmallChangesBigShifts https://www.instagram.com/smallchangesbigshiftsco   Thanks for listening! Today, we're diving into a complex and nuanced topic—raising daughters in today's world. Joining me for this conversation is Cathy Adams, a longtime friend of the pod, powerhouse in the parenting space, and champion of mindful, connected parenting. Her latest book, which takes center stage in today's discussion, is Restoring Our Girls: How Real Conversations Shape Our Daughters' Lives, Help Them with Teen Challenges, and Remind Them That They Matter. With her background as a clinical social worker, certified parent coach, and former child and family therapist—as well as her experience as a mom of three daughters and university professor—Cathy brings a rich, multifaceted perspective to this important topic. In this episode, Cathy and I explore the unique challenges girls face today, from societal pressures and cultural conditioning to navigating a fast-paced, often judgmental world. We discuss the importance of parents addressing their own emotional baggage, being mindful of their reactions, and recognizing how fear can hold us back from having the messy but meaningful conversations our daughters need. Cathy also shares strategies for creating judgment-free spaces where girls feel heard, validated, and supported in becoming their authentic selves.   About Cathy Adams Cathy Cassani Adams, LCSW, co-hosts the long-running Zen Parenting Radio podcast and founded the Zen Parenting Conference in Chicago. She is the author of Zen Parenting and Living What You Want Your Kids to Learn (both Nautilus Award and International Book Award winners) and her upcoming 2025 release, Restoring Our Girls. Our topic is climate change. Is the Earth at a tipping point? Or has it past that tipping point? Many argue climate change is cyclical or not man made. Others argue we are not near, let alone past, any tipping point. Others feel science and technology will resolve these issues. Anderson believes we are mostly past the point of no return. Not necessarily because we can't reverse and address certain key problems; but because we won't. Our politics are too divided. The nations of the world are too divided with differing priorities and resources. Science is no longer respected and anything establishment has been undermined by the YouTube citizen researcher culture. This almost made it into Garden of Doom but since we stuck mostly to science and real politique, Views it is. In this case, the water being warm is one of the problems.richardandersonauthor.com

This is our time to come out of the shadows and burn brightly. She is the host of the Creative Magic podcast, where she interviews contemporary creative women. The mother of three children, she lives in East Cork, Ireland. In this conversation we explored:- How to connect with the source of creativity. We explored how the writing process looks for both of us and what we need to let the writing pour out of us. Lucy shared how writing feels like a journey through spaces which are portals for voices coming through her.- Why we must connect with our sensual body if we want to reclaim our feminine fire and Burning Woman. Before Burning Woman safes the world, she has to save herself, which means to recognise her subconscious desires so that the fire within becomes the fire without and a guiding light for the world! - How fear invites us to work with our energy wisely. Rather than denying or resisting it, we can transmute fear, meaning to express it and give a voice to what is ruling us and to what has never been expressed.- How by transmuting the energy of fear, we free the power within it. Fear, Lucy shared, is trapped energy turned against us and fear asks for inquiry, otherwise we back off and keep serving patriarchy. Her art is fiercely authentic, and she leaves no stone of her own personal healing journey unturned. Dee works with the alchemical aspect of transmutation in her art, using this process to deal with difficult topics, including, abuse, death and loss. Dee's performance art is provocative and has a political point to make, highly social, collaborative and community building. She is driven by story and symbolism, how we remember and interpret history and women's role and their bodies within that. She exhibits and performs regularly and had an award-winning show at Edinburgh Fringe 2023.https://deirdre-mulrooney.com/www.Instagram.com/deemulrooney***Trigger warning re abuse and baby death, and Irish Mother and Baby homes – to skip this section 13:40-19:00 mins***We talked about:The central theme of womanhood in her work and contemporary vulva-tastic culture! Her alter ego Growler – an 84 year old vulva and mother of God and creating ritual theatreHow one of the most traumatic events in recent Irish history emboldened her to drawThe colonisation of the creative space by patriarchy and capitalismArt and activismWomen's creativity, high art and the EstablishmentArt as alchemy and transmuter of painIn the extended episode we discussed:The impact of empire…and how quickly things can changeHer experience of childhood hallucinations and being exorcisedImbas – the Irish insightHer advice on overcoming fear in order to make or share the work you are called toWe mentioned:Empire podcastBurning WomanTuam Mother and Baby HomeThe Babog projectMeggan Watterson – Magdalene RevealedImbasSile na gigsAbout your HostLucy H. Working under the online name Trackless Wild, Janisse Ray is an American writer, naturalist, and environmental activist. Just about everything she does speaks to me of the largest meaning and importance of what it means to be a capital G gardener in our world. A moving storyteller, speaker, and teacher, her book titles include Ecology of A Cracker Childhood (1999), a memoir; Wild Spectacle, Seeking Wonders in A World Beyond Humans (2021), a collection of essays; Red Lanterns (2021), a collection of poems; The Woods of Fannin County (2023), a novel, and many more. Her most recent title is based on her many years teaching writing, particularly place-based creative non-fiction: Craft & Current, A Manual for Magical Writing. Her acclaimed work has earned Janisse a Pushcart Prize, an American Book Award, the Green Prize for Sustainable Literature, a Nautilus Award, and the Arlene Eisenberg Award for Writing that Matters, among other well-deserved awards. For me, the most striking aspect of her talents (expressed ardently across genres) is the precision with which she lovingly gives voice to her own place, specifically her home ground of rural South Georgia's uplands and coastal plains – and from there, the greater U.S. Southeast generally. The climatic and seasonal fluctuations and moods of the flora and fauna across mountains, and meadows, roadside verges and meandering creeks, Janisse is always documenting the lives and ground out of which places grow people. Her work Seed Underground, A Growing Revolution to Save Food (2012), was one of handful of books about the poetics and politics of seed and seed people in their places that inspired me in my writing of What We Sow, On the Personal, Ecological, and Cultural Significance of Seeds (2023) (along with the likes of Henry David Thoreau's posthumously-published writings on seed dispersal, and Gary Nabhan's Enduring Seed). While very much rooted in the Southeast, Janisse, like all great nature writers, gives voice to the importance of all places through her devotion to her singular place. Janisse's teaching (online and at various universities across her career) focuses on encouraging the practice of place-based, heartfelt observation and writing as a way to grow better people, and therefore as a way to durably tend to all places. Janisse joins Cultivating Place this week to explore what it means to be devoted to place - in word, action, and spirit. Cultivating Place now has a donate button! The mother of three children, she lives in East Cork, Ireland   In this episode we explore how to reclaim the magic in our sensitivity - and in particular, neurodivergence.  We dive into what “neurodivergence” is, and means, and what signs might help sensitive souls illuminate that they are neuro-diverse - as well as why and how women who resonate with this label must meet their sensitive needs, rather than try to mask and fit into a culture that doesn't suit them.  Most importantly, we shared our important worldview on how neurodivergence can actually be a gift - and especially a super-power that allows magical women to be powerful healers, teachers and guides.   What You'll Learn from this Episode:   Highly sensitive women are often also ‘neurodivergent' - a word which is commonly understood by labels such as autism, ADHD or things like dyslexia or dyscalculia - and mean that we have different from ‘typical' brains Neurodivergence (ND) can show up in lots of different ways, but the main way it can present itself is having a sensitive nervous system that is over-primed - as well as feeling burned out, touched out and overwhelmed by our senses (we have a deep sensitivity to noise, scents, clothes on our skin, lights, electricity, and other things) The label of neurodivergence can be really helpful in aiding us to see that there's actually nothing wrong with us as a sensitive soul - and that we are just wired differently, and struggling to fit into a world that wasn't built for us; owning it this way can help us learn to navigate the world in an aligned way As sensitive women, and ND women, we must learn to honour and meet our own needs, so that we aren't constantly overwhelmed and our nervous systems don't reach meltdown.  As we do meet our needs, we can reclaim the gifts in our sensitivity And there are many gifts - creativity, brilliant minds, the capacity to spot patterns, entrepreneurial skills, deep passion for things, high empathy and sensitivity to other worlds (in other words, all the ‘clairs' - e.g. clairvoyance), a capacity for lucid dreaming, a high importance for truthful expression, hyper-focus and a real affinity with nature It is common for these gifts to make sensitive souls excellent ‘healers' - as long as we can reclaim the gifts in our sensitivity.   Resources and Things that We Spoke About:   Social: Tiktok - @archetypalapothecary Instagram - @iamnicolebarton Instagram - @archetypalapothecary You Tube - https://www.youtube.com/@secretwitchsociety Join our Secret Witch Society: www.facebook.com/groups/secretwitch  Next Crucible:  Website: www.nicolebarton.co.uk  Elain Aron - The Highly Sensitive Person - https://hsperson.com/books www.lucyhpearce.com - Lucy's website  www.womancraftpublishing.com  - her newest books are Crow Moon: reclaiming the wisdom of the dark woods and The Kitchen Witch Companion, which she illustrated and co-authored with Sarah Robinson.  I am a Unicorn Blog - https://dreamingaloud.net/2019/02/i-am-a-unicorn/    Thank you for listening, we'd love to know what comes alive for you in this week's episode, so please let us know.   If you loved it, there's a fresh episode every other week - subscribe so you don't miss it!   Thank you,   Nicole and Team Secret Witch xox

A Pinch of Magick
Giving voice and breaking silence through writing - An Interview with Lucy H. Pearce

A Pinch of Magick

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 28, 2023 70:05

**PLEASE NOTE: Today's episode contains adult themes and occasional language some might find offensive** Today on the A Pinch of Magick podcast I'm joined by Lucy H Pearce, an author, artist, and founder of Womancraft Publishing. We start off talking about how Lucy first got into writing. It's a story that many of you might find familiar—a need to express, to connect, to make sense of the world. Lucy shares how writing became her way of doing just that, and how it evolved into something much bigger than she could ever have anticipated. Then we get into the heart of what happens when you suppress that creative urge. Lucy's been there, and she talks about the toll it takes. It's a bit like holding your breath; at some point, you've got to let it out. Sharing your most honest work can be terrifying. Lucy knows this all too well, and she shares how she learned to get more comfortable with it. It's about finding that balance between vulnerability and strength, and she's got some tips that could help you do just that. Lucy explains that each book she brings into the world is like stepping out of her comfort zone abit more. It's a challenge, but one that she leans into, and she tells us why. We also touch on something a bit heavier—the sense of danger Lucy has felt in her own body when tackling certain topics. It's a reminder that creating a safe space for yourself is crucial, especially when you're pushing your own boundaries. Now, why is the feminine so often linked with darkness, with things that are considered 'bad'? Lucy and I delve into this, breaking down some of the cultural narratives that have shaped these beliefs. She believes that one of the biggest gifts she can give the world is breaking that silence, giving voice to those things that have been silenced or kept in the shadows. What does success look like to you? Lucy urges us to define that for ourselves, to step away from what society tells us it should be. It's about stepping into your own truth, and she's got some thoughts on how you can do that. We discuss Lucy's latest book, The Kitchen Witch Companion, and how it's more than just a collection of recipes. Lucy describes it as a journey into reclaiming our power, our magick, and our true hunger and desires. She also explains what magick means to her. We wrap up with a discussion about evidence, the importance of 'noticing,' and why life is never really 'done.' It's a constant process of change and evolution, and Lucy's next book, Crow Moon, is a testament to that. By the end of our chat, you'll walk away with not just answers to some big questions, but also a toolkit for navigating your own path. So, are you ready to dive in? About Lucy H. Pearce Lucy H. Pearce is the author of multiple life-changing non-fiction books, including Nautilus Award silver winners Medicine Woman, Burning Woman, and Creatrix: she who makes. (Executive produced by Academy-Award and Grammy winner Common, NBA stars Grant Hill and Dwyane Wade, the Winklevoss Twins, and Olympian Mary Mazzio). Arshay grew up on the West Side of Chicago in a community surrounded by gangs and drugs. In 1997 he joined (and later became captain of) the country's first All-Black high school rowing team at Manley High School, an experience that changed his life. He then dedicated two years of his life to AmeriCorps, focusing on DEI, and soon after that attended Le Cordon Bleu, becoming a personal chef for World Wrestling Entertainment, Warner Brothers film sets, and professional athletes. After years as an entrepreneur in the food service industry, Arshay returned to his true passion: working with young people. He founded the NY East Side Rowing Club and worked as the national youth program guidance counselor for Victory Outreach International. Arshay also helped start several rowing programs for low-income youth across the country, anywhere a puddle of water exists, so that other young people can experience the profound change that can happen on the water. Arshay is the founder of the National Award-Winning Non-Profit, The A Most Beautiful Thing Inclusion Fund, which introduces thousands of under-resourced youth to the sport of rowing. Arshay's mission has sparked the MLK Day of Service “DAY ON'' for collegiate and high school sports teams across the country and community rowing events between local police and community members. Arshay's message has spread all across the world, speaking for the members of Congress, the NBA and WNBA, the NAACP, the Obama Foundation, the Congressional Black Caucus, and professional sports teams (including the Oakland A's, the Atlanta Hawks, the Miami Dolphins, the Atlanta Falcons, and the Chicago Bulls). The British, New Zealand, Australian, German, Dutch, Italian, French, Egyptian, Turkish, Canadian, and other Olympic teams are supporting Arshay and the film profoundly, including creating new charitable organizations and initiatives with underserved communities. Universities and athletic directors across the United States (from Morehouse and other HBCU institutions to the University of Washington to Harvard, Yale, and Princeton) are all hosting events with Arshay. Arshay has spoken at UPS, Bank of America, Target, JP Morgan, Delta Airlines, Starbucks, Microsoft, and many other companies hosting conversations around the film, digging into access and opportunity, and the importance of bringing people together. The book was nominated for an NAACP Image Award and won the 2020 Nautilus Award. The film has won the 2021 Gracie Award, was nominated by the NAACP for an Image Award, was nominated by the Critics' Choice Association for Best Sports Documentary, was nominated by the International Press Academy for Best Documentary, and was named one of the best films of 2020 by Esquire. The film is currently streaming on Peacock and Amazon Prime, and a scripted series is now being developed with Amazon Studios. What can one say about John David Mann? He has mastered, well he wouldn't say that, but I would, writing non-fiction, parable and fiction writing. He has also shown us how a marriage can be lived fully and be written about, how to start your own school, and how to run a business with over 100,000 people. And those are just a few of his achievements to date. My favorite is that he has launched almost every book he has written or co-authored on my show since 2015. Yup, that one is special to me because his words lift my spirits, awaken my brain and bring me joy. Well not just to me but to over 3 million people in 38 languages. Blind Fear is John's latest novel with Brandon Webb and it does not disappoint. Today we talked about what his latest novel means, how he manages to take a more 'Hitchcockian" approach to writing than many others (my choice of words as you will hear), and how crime writing taught him to fall in love with the world.  These aren't the usual questions John gets asked, and his answers may surprise you.  Take a listen as we dive deep with John David Mann on life, fiction, writing mastery mentoring and a few other things. John David Mann has been creating careers since he was a teenager. Before turning to business and journalism, he forged a successful career as a concert cellist and prize-winning composer. At fifteen he won the prestigious BMI Awards to Student Composers and received the award at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, where he met such twentieth-century-music luminaries as William Schumann and Leopold Stokowski. He apprenticed as a choral conductor under his father, Dr. Alfred Mann, which gave him the chance to meet more legendary figures of classical music, including Randall Thompson, Leonard Bernstein, Boris Goldovsky, Robert Shaw, and George Crumb. His musical compositions were performed throughout the U.S. and his musical score for Aeschylus' Prometheus Bound (written at age thirteen) was performed as part of a theatrical production of the play at the stone amphitheater in Epidaurus, Greece—the very one, in fact, where the play was originally premiered a few thousand years earlier. At age seventeen, he and a few friends started their own high school in New Jersey (called Changes, Inc.). “Alternative” though they were, his school successfully placed its students in such universities as Harvard and Yale. After graduating, he joined the school's faculty. In the years since he has taught children in affluent Boston suburbs, Indiana farms, and the poorest neighborhoods on the outskirts of Philadelphia. John never planned to go into business; it just seemed to keep working out that way. He has founded one school, one food distribution business, one graphic design business, and two publishing companies. John's diverse career has made him a thought leader in several different industries. In 1986 he founded and wrote for Solstice, a journal on health, nutrition, and environmental issues. His series on the climate crisis, “Whither the Trees?” (yes, he was writing about this back in the eighties), was selected for national reprint in 1989 in Utne Reader for a readership of over one hundred thousand. In 1992 John helped write and produce the underground bestseller The Greatest Networker in the World, by John Milton Fogg, which became the defining book in its industry. During the 1990s, John built a multimillion-dollar sales/distribution organization of over a hundred thousand people. He was cofounder and senior editor of the legendary Upline journal and editor in chief of Networking Times. As a public speaker he has addressed audiences of thousands. John is an award-winning author whose writings have earned the Axiom Business Book Award (Gold Medal, for The Go-Giver), the Nautilus Award (for A Deadly Misunderstanding), and Taiwan's Golden Book Award for Innovation (for You Call the Shots). The Go-Giver was also honored with the Living Now Book Awards “Evergreen Medal” in 2017 for its “contributions to positive global change,” and cited on Inc.'s “Most Motivational Books Ever Written” and HubSpot's “20 Most Highly Rated Sales Books of All Time”; The Go-Giver Leader was listed on Entrepreneur magazine's “10 Books Every Leader Should Read” and Forbes magazine's “8 Books Every Young Leaders Should Read.” His 2012 Take the Lead (with Betsy Myers) was named Best Leadership Book of 2011 by Tom Peters and the Washington Post. His first novel, Steel Fear (2021, with former Navy SEAL Brandon Webb), was hailed by Lee Child as “an instant classic, maybe an instant legend” and nominated for a Barry Award. Jeffery Deaver called the sequel, Cold Fear (2022), “one of the best crime novels of the year.” You can read his thoughts on entering the world of crime fiction at JohnDavidMann.com His books are published in 38 languages and have sold more than 3 million copies. John coauthored the international bestselling classic The Go-Giver (with Bob Burg), the New York Times bestsellers The Latte Factor (with David Bach), The Red Circle (with Brandon Webb), and Flash Foresight (with Daniel Burrus), and The Answer (ghost-written for John Assaraf and Murray Smith) and the national bestsellers The Slight Edge (with Jeff Olson), Among Heroes (with Brandon Webb), Out of the Maze (with Spencer Johnson) and Real Leadership (with John Addison). He has written for American Executive, CNBC, CrimeReads, Financial Times, Forbes.com, Huffington Post, Ivey Business Journal, Leader to Leader, Leadership Excellence, Master Salesmanship, Strategy & Leadership, and Wired. You can find his writings on Huffington Post here. He is married to Ana Gabriel Mann (check out their wedding photos and vows), his coauthor on The Go-Giver Marriage, and considers himself the luckiest mann in the world.

I'm going to tell you a story. It's not a true story, it's not even based on any specific person that I know, but it's the type of story that happens all the time. Maybe it's even happened to you or someone you know. This is the story of Jane. Jane had always dreamed of becoming a lawyer. Growing up in a low-income neighborhood, Jane had to work hard to overcome the many obstacles in her way. She was an excellent student and graduated from high school with top grades and even attended a good college and received her law degree with honors. But...she ran into a problem. Despite her impressive credentials, Jane struggled to find a job. She applied to law firm after law firm after law firm and sat for several interviews, but was always passed over for the job. She couldn't figure out why and now that the student loan payments were due, she had a lot of external pressure influencing her decisions. Jane couldn't understand why she wasn't getting hired, especially since she had done everything right, so she decided to take a job working the front desk at a law firm. After all, she had bills to pay...and as long as she got in the door, she was confident she could get the job she wanted. But that didn't happen either. Jane watched as lawyer after lawyer was brought in and hired...mean while she hadn't even been considered for those roles. And eventually...the frustration and sense of failure started to build. We won't finish Jane's story because...well, it's kind of all of our stories. Factors we cant control such as gender expression, sexuality, race, and other socioeconomic have a unique ability to limit the list of potential opportunities that come our way. And it's time that we learn about it...and not only that, but learn how to end it. So get excited, because this is Tiny Leaps, Big Changes. My guest today is Jessica Nordell. Jessica Nordell is a science writer, award-winning author, and speaker known for blending rigorous science with compassionate humanity. Her first book, The End of Bias: A Beginning, won the Nautilus Award and was shortlisted for the Columbia Journalism/Lukas Prize for Excellence in Nonfiction, the NYPL Bernstein Book Award for Excellence in Journalism, the Royal Society Science Book Prize, and the National Association of Science Writers Book Prize. Here's a question...when was the last time you considered your unconcious biases? Have you ever? It's okay if not..most of us haven't. But here's something interesting to note..whether we take the time to examine them or not...they do affect us. Every single day. Maybe in small ways, getting passed over for a promotion, being spoken down to by your peers, or...in the case of my guest today...getting your work overlooked. Or maybe you've been the perpetrator. Choosing the cross the street at night when you see a person of color coming towards you. Or subconsciously discounting what a female colleague has to say. No matter how it affects you...it does affect you. And it can cause huge problems in your life and in larger society. That's why for the next 2 episodes, we're going to take about how to end it. And the answer? Well...you already know the answer...because this is Tiny Leaps, Big Changes. My guest today is Jessica Nordell.
