Today's guest, Taylor Sartor, is the creator and legal director of FosterPower, a movement to improve the lives and futures of youth in foster care in Florida, by providing them information on their benefits, protections, and legal rights. Taylor is also a senior attorney at the L. David Shear Children's Law Center, where she represents youth in foster care. Taylor focuses on issues related to human trafficking, disabilities, commitment in psychiatric facilities, aging out of foster care, and school-to-prison pipeline prevention, among many others. She came up with the idea for FosterPower while she was still in law school working with youth in foster care who had many questions about their rights and the resources available to them. The organization offers answers to these questions through a mobile app. An alum of Stetson University College of Law, Taylor is also the founder of Child Advocates of Stetson Law, an organization that recruits law students to become guardian ad litem volunteers, mentors, and leaders to advocate on behalf of children facing abuse and neglect. Additionally, she served as an Equal Justice Works Fellow at the Children's Law Center from 2018 to 2020. In our wide-ranging discussion, Taylor talks with us about the range of issues youth in foster care must contend with, how FosterPower earns trust from its users, where her passion for youth in foster care comes from, and her experience as an Equal Justice Works fellow.
The Last Best Hope?: Understanding America from the Outside In
Wealthy Americans have always found ways of spending money on political campaigns in the presumed expectation of a return on their investment. But in 2010, the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision ruled that legislation that restricted how much money could be spent on influencing elections was unconstitutional, opening up vast new possibilities for wealthy individuals and corporations to support candidates. The Court's argument was that to stop someone spending as much as they liked to push an agenda or a candidate was a violation of the first amendment right to free speech. The official campaigns still have to be transparent about how much money they're raising and from whom, but there are now effectively no limits at all on what people can spend trying to influence the outcome of an election in indirect ways. That's where so-called “Super PACs” come in (the PACs is an acronym standing for Political Action Committee). It turns out that it's really easy to hide a political donation by giving it a Super PAC rather than directly to a candidate. So the problem today – in the post-Citizens United world -- is not only the amount of money being spent but that we no longer know who's spending it.Presenter: Adam Smith, Orsborn Professor of US Political History at Oxford and Director of the Rothermere American Institute.Guests:Ciara Torres-Spelliscy, a Brennan Center fellow and professor of law at Stetson University College of Law, where she teaches courses in election law. This week, we're speaking with Dr. Kirsten Davis of Stetson University College of Law. Dr. Davis began her legal career practicing in the areas of litigation, employment, and taxation. After a few years, she decided to pursue education, becoming a professor at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University, where she focused on legal writing. It was during this time that Dr. Davis started her PhD in Human Communication. Today, at Stetson University College of Law, Dr. Davis is a professor of law, Faculty Director of Online Legal Education Strategies, and Provost's Faculty Fellow for Generative Artificial Intelligence and Higher Education. Her research and scholarship focus on legal communication, law and rhetoric, professionalism, professional identity, and professional ethics, and she is currently working on issues at the intersection of generative AI, legal education, and legal practice. Additionally, she is a consultant, trainer, writer, and blogger on various topics in the legal profession. We had a lively conversation about her experience becoming a law professor, how she has adapted to generational changes among her law students, why we may have a "process renaissance" in legal education, and her thoughts on how generative AI will affect legal education in the near future.
Abortion is a polarizing issue. But whatever your opinion, if you're a Floridian voting this November, you'll have a say in whether the right to an abortion is written into the state constitution. Like voters in 11 other states this fall, Floridians will have the chance to vote on abortion access - in this case through a constitutional amendment. But since May, Floridians seeking an abortion have faced an added hurdle as have medical practices and groups that support people who are seeking abortions Today, the procedure is banned beyond the sixth week of pregnancy with some rare exceptions. That's after the Florida Legislature replaced a 15 week ban that had been in place since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade in 2022. Florida Matters created space for conversations on both sides of this controversial issue. In a special program recorded live at at WUSF in Tampa, you'll hear the background to the proposed amendment and how it could roll back Florida's current ban on abortions. During the conversation you'll hear from Kathryn Varn, Tampa Bay Reporter with Axios; Bree Wallace, Director of Case Management, Tampa Bay Abortion Fund; John Stemberger, President & Senior Counsel, Liberty Counsel Action; and Louis Virelli, Lawyer & Constitutional Law Professor, Stetson University College of Law.

The Florida Supreme Court released opinions on two proposed constitutional amendments Monday afternoon. One would enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution, and the other would legalize recreational marijuana for adults 21 and older. At the same time, the court released a ruling on a challenge to Florida's 15-week abortion ban. The court upheld the 15-week ban, which in turn means a more restrictive six-week ban will soon take effect. Stetson University College of Law professor Louis Virelli spoke to Florida Matters about the legal context of the court's decisions. Also joining the program to discuss the impact of these court opinions on health care are WUSF reporter and host Cathy Carter, WUSF health care reporter Stephanie Colombini and political analyst and retired political science professor Susan MacManus.

Brendan Prince is an attorney here in Huntsville, Alabama. He is well-known as a “local product,” first for his athletic achievements (Alabama High School State Wresting Champion and Alabama State Swimming Champion) and, now, for his legal work in government contracting and procurement, in addition to all the work he does for non-profit organizations. Brendan left Huntsville after high school to wrestle at the Citadel. Following graduation, Brendan attended law school at the Stetson University College of Law in Florida. It is clear that Brendan likes sun and warmth, as evidenced by the fact that he is admitted to practice law in both Alabama and Hawaii, where he spends a good bit of time each year. I have known Brendan since he was the captain of the Grissom high school wrestling team his senior year. He always struck me as being very squared away, humble and driven and you will hear that on this episode of the podcast.

Our notes for this conversation with Christine, before we had it, were this: expect this to be a casual vibe, hilarious interaction, lighthearted fun conversation! We would say that was EXACTLY what this was, in a nutshell. We went into this thinking we'd probably discuss some stuff like her upcoming book(s), plans, and more. But it really was more of a conversation that was about so many other facets of life than we had planned out, and it also seemed like the perfect conversation to air this holiday week. And - if this doesn't make you want to hear more about Rebecca and Becky in the fall, we don't know what will! What to listen for: Time, and how we process this as we get older Intentionality, and how this plays a role in everything in our lives from simpler living, to projects we choose, to how we spend our time Rebecca, Not Becky - the story of a suburban interracial friendship with SO MUCH under the surface, coming out later in 2023! When Greg Jenkins, Nirupa Netram, and Elinor Stutz, three colleagues and members of the Inclusion Allies Coalition, come together to discuss the importance of talking about race, they are confronted with their own diverse backgrounds, a goal to support those impacted by racism, and a central conflict between silence and open dialogue. "It is important for us to understand that race is a very Western idea, but in the context of those parts of the world where race is an understood terminology to understand the effects of race and racism is important for us to, in the case of the IAC, help us understand people that are suffering because of the negative impacts of racism." - Greg Jenkins Greg Jenkins is an older, white, straight male of Catholic upbringing who spent 28 years in the US Army and has been a diversity, equity, and inclusion consultant for the last 17 years. Nirupa Netram is an attorney and consultant of Indian descent and Hindu faith. Elinor Stutz is a Jewish woman, a best selling author, and the founder of Smooth Sale, Greg, Nirupa, and Elinor, along with Simma, are colleagues and members of the Inclusion Allies Coalition. Each of them has a different cultural background and provides their own perspective on the importance of talking about race and the value of the Inclusion Allies Coalition. Elinor shares the story of her family's experience and her own experience in corporate. They explain why it is important to have conversations about race, speak out against racism and stand together with people who are different. The Inclusion Allies Coalition provides a safe space for entry into conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a way to connect with people from all around the world. The Inclusion Allies Coalition brought together three colleagues and friends with a variety of cultural backgrounds. They discussed the importance of having conversations about race and the value of those conversations. In this episode, you will learn the answers to the following: How does being a member of the Inclusion Allies Coalition promote diversity, equity, and inclusion? What challenges have been experienced by those who have been negatively impacted by racism? How can people become more open to learning from those who are different? Key Topics: [00:45] Three members of the Inclusion Allies Coalition appear on this week's podcast. Each person will give you two minutes, two sentences about themselves. They will give their name, their cultural background. [03:09] “Why do you think it's important to talk about race today?” We can't have silence now because you're going to call on us. Why is it an important conversation? Well, these are discussions that are happening globally in response to so many issues. [04:48] Elinor Stutz was raised not to talk about being Jewish because her family were holocaust surivors. She says antisemitism is on the rise and so is racism. It's important for groups to stand together and to really speak out together. [09:02] The Inclusion Allies Coalition brings together people from all over the world. They are advocates for people that may be suffering, or negatively impacted by the topics that we're referring to here. Greg finds value in networking with other colleagues that are trying to do good things in their world. [11:09] Being an IAC member allows you to gain access to global practitioners who support and take action to build inclusion. Elinor shares what it means to her to meet so many people who diverse in so many ways. [19:24] When Elinor was growing up, her grammar was half English and half Yiddish. She felt weird all the time. People always told her she was weird. [22:23] Nirupa: “I was very lucky growing up. It wasn't until I moved to the US that I began to experience the negative aspects of race and racism.” She says she would walk into stores and be ignored or looked at a certain way. Nirupa believes people are fundamentally good and capable of change. [27:07] Simma ask Nirupa, “Do you think younger generations are more accepting of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, or it's still the same?” Nirupa “I would like to see the future in upcoming generations, that they are more inclusive. I again believe people are well intended and capable of change.” [31:13] Nirupa: “Inclusion Allies Coalition is an important place in that we can have conversations that we don't have normally. For some folks, like maybe the ones that you're referring to in Charlottesville, that frightens them. We have to create spaces to have the conversations.” [33:35] Simma: What would you like your friends to do to show support for you? Nirupa: I think just maybe us openly talking about it, and sharing ways that they can be an ally to me. I find talking through scenarios that negatively impact us really help. [36:41] Gregory: “We need to acknowledge what has happened so that it's not glossed over". Elinor: I hope that we will become more united and this crime wave based on race and antisemitism as well as toward other groups will end. [42:17] Greg: “For your listeners there's the 4D Tool. The four DS are delay, distract, delegate and direct. Research showed that oftentimes when people see something happening, they don't know what to do. We do have to stand up, which is why we have inclusion allies.” [45:39] Simma: “Share either a movie. film or TV show, or a song that reflects what's going on today around race and differences or allyship. For each of you, I want to know, do you have any? Professor Chase gives us insight into articles she has written that focus on prisoners and their access to justice through the research and technology that they have available. She tells us what excites her and troubles her about the topic, and shares her suggestions for aiding prisoners in their access to justice. She tells us that there is a significant problem with access to information, a constitutional right for incarcerated individuals. She also discusses her latest book, Millennial Leadership in Law Schools: Essays in Disruption, Innovation, and the Future, which talks about the role millennials will play in shaping the future of legal education. Professor Chase shares how her students deal with the technology she has implemented in the curriculum to be more reflective of the technology used in the profession. She gives us some tips on some of the technology that is helpful to students and their future careers in the profession. Professor Chase shares her predictions for the future of legal education, and her opinion that people and places should not be reduced to rankings, as that ultimately is harmful to the Academy and the legal profession. In today's episode I talk with Erika, who was a member of my group coaching program last fall, and is celebrating her 1-year sugarversary. We had such a great and open conversation about addiction! Erika was born and raised in Miami, Florida. She graduated from the University of Florida and later attended law school at Stetson University College of Law. She currently lives in Miami where she owns and operates her law practice together with her husband. Erika identifies as a food addict. After years of struggling with her weight and subscribing to the diet culture mentality, Erika became abstinent from sugar and flour on August 27, 2021. She created a network of supportive family and friends and believes firmly in the principal of: “just for today”. Erika and her husband have 2 little boys and a rescue dog named Leroy. This book raises awareness on mental health and well-being challenges in the legal profession and equips individual lawyers with the skills needed to take action and live a happier life. In this episode… A 2016 study from the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation shows that 28% of lawyers struggle with some level of depression, and 19% demonstrate symptoms of anxiety. On top of that, a Legal Trends Report from 2018 tells us that 75% of lawyers frequently work outside of business hours, and 39% said that working long hours has affected their personal lives. Since the emergence of the pandemic, these numbers are likely higher. So what can we do, whether on an individual or institutional level, to support lawyers' mental health and well-being? Nora Riva Bergman and Chelsy Castro believe lawyers deserve to lead happy, healthy, and resilient lives. That's why they co-authored the book 50 Lessons for Happy Lawyers, where they share tools and strategies to help lawyers support their health and well-being. Traditionally, the idea of lawyers' physical and mental health has been swept under the rug, but now, Nora and Chelsy believe that the legal profession is at an inflection point — and they're helping create change one small step at a time. In this episode of The Lawyer's Edge Podcast, Elise Holtzman is joined by Nora Riva Bergman, Certified Practice Advisor at Atticus and Founder of Real Life Practice, and Chelsy Castro, Founder of Castro Jacobs Psychotherapy and Consulting (CJPC). Nora and Chelsy share why they wrote 50 Lessons for Happy Lawyers, their favorite lessons from the book, and strategies lawyers can use to invest in their well-being and create lasting change.
