S4E27: Claire Rumore - From Diagnosis To Desire: Cancer Intimacy and the Road Back To Yourself

Modern Pleasure Podcast

When Claire Rumore was lifted into a hospital gurney to undergo her first biopsy, she stepped aside to use the restroom first. And while she was there, she heard a quiet internal voice ask her a question: Do you want to go back to the life you had before? Is that what you want? Without hesitation, her answer was no. What followed was one of the most unusual cancer journeys in modern medicine. Claire was 43 years old. She had stage four pancreatic cancer — a diagnosis that typically affects older men, and that her medical team never actually disclosed to her during treatment. She went through two major abdominal surgeries, dropped to 74 pounds, lost her menstrual cycle, lost her libido, and lost the person she had been. And then, slowly, over the course of eighteen months, she found her way back. Not to who she was- but to someone clearer, more embodied, and more deeply connected to her own desire than she had ever been before. In this episode, Dr. Jenni Skyler and Daniel Lebowitz sit down with Claire for a conversation about the emotional, relational, and erotic dimensions of cancer recovery that medicine almost never addresses. Claire is the founder of Cancer and Intimacy, an education platform built on a three-part framework she developed from her own experience and her work with patients, survivors, and their partners. The first lily pad is erotic grief, the deeply under addressed process of mourning what's been lost: The body you knew, the sexuality you had, the intimacy you can no longer access in the same way. Claire has written a free ebook on erotic grief and makes a compelling case that this experience is not exclusive to cancer. It's universal to anyone navigating major change. The second is libido listening. The slow, quiet, inward practice of reacquainting yourself with your own body's signals after illness or loss. Claire describes learning to feel pleasure in the sheets against her skin, in the air in the room, in the gentlest forms of touch, what she calls subtle sexuality. A term she coined to describe the low, soft, sensory orientation to desire that becomes the entry point back to conventional sexuality. 222: When “You're Cured” Isn't the Whole Story: Don and Clare's Prostate Cancer Recovery Story

In this episode of The Penis Project Podcast, Melissa sits down with Don and Clare, a couple who have lived through the messy, emotional and often under discussed reality of prostate cancer recovery.  Don was diagnosed just before his 65th birthday after his PSA rose from around 4 to over 9. A biopsy showed aggressive Gleason 9 prostate cancer, and within six weeks his prostate was removed. His PSA is now undetectable, which is the result everyone hopes for. But, as Don and Clare explain, being “cancer-free” did not mean life went back to normal.   After surgery, Don experienced severe ongoing urinary incontinence. Despite doing all the pelvic floor exercises and following instructions, he was still incontinent 18 months later. Eventually, after further review, he was referred for an artificial urinary sphincter, which has made a huge difference to his quality of life.   This episode is about more than leakage, pads, clips and surgery. It is about what happens when a man feels lost in the medical system. It is about the emotional toll of prostate cancer on both partners. It is about the importance of honesty, asking questions, changing teams if needed, and remembering that there is a person attached to the prostate.  In This Episode, We Cover:  The emotional impact of severe urinary leakage   Why pelvic floor exercises do not fix every case of incontinence   What can be done when continence doesn't recover  Clare's perspective as a partner watching Don struggle   How hormone therapy affected Don's mood, personality and relationship   The importance of being told the full picture, not just the “curative” plan   Why some men need an artificial urinary sphincter   The importance of second opinions and finding a team that sees the whole person   Why prostate cancer recovery is a couple's issue, not just a man's issue    Key Takeaway: An undetectable PSA is wonderful, but it is not the whole story; quality of life matters.    Key message from Don and Clare:   People need honest information.  Don and Clare do not regret the cancer treatment. Don says the surgery likely saved his life. But they both wish they had been told earlier that his continence recovery was unlikely to happen without further intervention. Clare explains that people may not want bad news, but they do want the truth.  That truth gives people options. It helps them plan. It helps them understand that they are not failing. And it can prevent months, or even years, of unnecessary suffering.    Resources & Links:  Book a telehealth consult with our sexual health nurse practitioners at Restorative Health Clinic  For more information check out our websites www.rshealth.com.au , www.makehardeasy.com.au and www.melissahadleybarrett.com.au   Listen & Subscribe  If you found this episode helpful, don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review the podcast! In this episode of The Penis Project Podcast, Melissa speaks with Sophie Smith, a prostate cancer specialist nurse based in the UK, about what prostate cancer nursing looks like on the other side of the world.  Sophie has been nursing for 23 years, with her entire career connected to urology and prostate cancer care. She now works with Prostate Cancer UK, providing information, support and guidance to men, partners and families navigating prostate cancer diagnosis, treatment decisions, side effects and life after treatment.  Melissa and Sophie compare the UK and Australian systems, including the role of prostate cancer nurses, access to sexual rehabilitation, erectile dysfunction care, psychosexual support, pelvic floor education, penile implants, radiation therapy, hormone therapy and the sometimes-controversial topic of lymph node removal.  This episode is a thoughtful and practical conversation about the parts of prostate cancer treatment that are not always discussed enough: erections, identity, relationships, grief, masculinity, intimacy and the importance of having someone safe to talk to.  And yes, as always, we talk about penises. Because ignoring them has never helped anyone.  Sophie's biggest message to men going through prostate cancer treatment is to reach out and get support. Prostate cancer can feel lonely, especially when the changes affect sex, relationships and mental wellbeing. But you do not need to sit with those worries by yourself.  Sometimes the hardest part is starting the conversation. Once one brave person says, “Actually, this has been difficult for me,” the floodgates often open.    Resources & Links:  Prostate Cancer UK has a range of services that can help see links below:  https://prostatecanceruk.org/  support services page with all the support we offer: https://prostatecanceruk.org/prostate-information-and-support/get-support    Sexual Support: https://prostatecanceruk.org/prostate-information-and-support/get-support/sexual-support  Partners Support Group: https://tackleprostate.org/support-groups/national-prostate-cancer-partners-support-group/  Book an appointment with our sexual health nurse practitioners at Restorative Health Clinic  For more information check out our websites www.rshealth.com.au , www.makehardeasy.com.au and www.melissahadleybarrett.com  Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia https://www.pcfa.org.au/   Need support?  At Restorative Health Clinic and Make Hard Easy, we support men and their partners with:  penile rehabilitation after prostate cancer treatment  erectile dysfunction  peyronie's disease  premature ejaculation  intimacy and sexual recovery  partner-inclusive support where appropriate  practical, evidence-based strategies for getting confidence back  We offer in clinic consultations in Australia and telehealth consultations Australia/ World-wide, making it easier for men to access experienced, compassionate support no matter where they live.  Listen & Subscribe  If you found this episode helpful, don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review the podcast! Hospital gowns strip your dignity. That's what Dr. Cindy Trice learned firsthand during treatment for advanced cervical cancer. When a friend brought her a pair of pajamas, it changed everything: she felt like a person again, not just a patient. That moment became the origin story for Kickit Recovery Wear, a company designing stylish, functional post-surgery clothing and chemo-friendly apparel for women at every stage of recovery. In this episode, Cindy shares the 16-year journey from idea to launch — including a paralyzing car accident at 18, a career as a veterinarian, a sold software company, and the fourth-grade friend who helped her finally bring it all to life.During chemo, a friend brought her a pair of cute pajamas. She put them on and everything changed. She walked laps around the nurses' station. She let visitors in. But the nurses could not work around them, and she realized the hospital gown exists for a reason. The question was: why has nobody made something that works for patients and medical staff? That idea sat for sixteen years. In the meantime, Cindy became a veterinarian, built and sold a software company called Relief Rover, and eventually launched KickIt with three co-founders, including her best friend since the fourth grade. They split ownership equally and built the whole thing together. She is also a patient advocate for Cervivor and wants you to know: cervical cancer is preventable. One of the hardest things about fatigue after cancer is not knowing what's causing it. Is it the lasting impact of cancer treatment? Is it menopause? Is it hormone therapy — or all of it together? For many people, it's impossible to tease apart, and that uncertainty alone can be exhausting. And please don't tell me to ‘do less' to feel better!Fatigue is one of the most common and most misunderstood long-term effects of cancer and its treatment. Many people are told it's “normal”, something they just have to live with. But for those experiencing it, this exhaustion can be overwhelming, persistent, and life-limiting.In this episode, Dani is joined by Dr. Jessa Landman, a leading naturopathic doctor specialising in integrative oncology. Together they unpack what cancer-related fatigue really is — and how menopause can intensify it further.Together, they explore why this fatigue is not the same as everyday tiredness, why rest alone often doesn't help, and how hormonal changes, endocrine therapy, disrupted sleep, emotional load and identity loss can all layer on top of each other. This conversation is about validation, understanding, and practical ways forward! You can find more information about Dr Jessa Landman here:Website: https://drjessalandmann.com/Pre-order Jessa's new Book: https://www.wiley.com/en-ca/Beyond+Cancer+Fatigue%3A+A+Path+to+Reclaiming+Energy-p-9781394381371You can find Dani's Book ‘Navigating Menopause After Cancer' here: https://amzn.eu/d/0d9bgNBUIt is now also available as an audiobook!Episode Highlights:00:00 Intro06:32 "Complementary Care for Cancer Recovery"12:19 Enduring Fatigue and Recovery Struggles15:31 Cancer Fatigue vs Exhaustion17:40 Understanding Individual Health Needs20:49 "Food and Lifestyle as Medicine"25:27 Sleep Issues Post-Cancer Treatment29:22 Muscle, Nutrition, and Energy Balance33:15 Exercise: Finding What Works36:26 "Menopause Fatigue and Herbal Remedies"42:07 "Wellness Foundations and Options"47:34 "Menopause Fatigue: 3P Strategies"Connect with us:For more information and resources visit our website: www.menopauseandcancer.org Or follow us on Instagram @menopause_and_cancerJoin our Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/menopauseandcancerchathub

Zach sits down with Pete and Tasha, a couple whose relationship was forged in the middle of some of life's hardest realities: addiction, cancer, caregiving, recovery, and the challenge of staying connected when survival itself becomes the focus. Pete and Tasha met in Boulder after years of each pursuing health and healing in different ways. Tasha had already devoted much of her life to recovery from eating disorders, addiction, and chronic illness, and she knew she wanted a partner who was committed to that same path. Pete initially appeared to be on that path too, but as their relationship deepened, more of his struggle with addiction surfaced. Then, shortly after getting engaged, everything escalated: Pete began experiencing severe symptoms and was ultimately diagnosed with a life-threatening tumor in his mediastinum, wrapped around his trachea and pressing against his heart and lungs. What follows is not just a story about illness. It's a story about what happens to a couple when one person becomes “the patient” and the other becomes “the caregiver,” and how hard it is to keep that dynamic from hardening into resentment, overfunctioning, codependence, and loss of reciprocity. Pete talks about how cancer forced him to confront not only his physical condition but the deeper patterns underneath his addiction and lifestyle. Tasha reflects on the toll of supporting him through treatment while also trying not to lose herself in fixing, managing, and carrying too much. Together, they explore what it means to heal in relationship: how trust gets rebuilt after dishonesty, how accountability has to become daily practice, and how love matures when both people are willing to face their own patterns. They describe practical tools they now use—like regular honesty check-ins, weekly date nights, therapy, and explicit conversations about support, food, recovery, and emotional responsibility—to keep their relationship from sliding into the old “nagging wife / resentful husband” script. This is a deeply layered conversation about partnership under pressure, and about choosing each other not just in romance, but in recovery, grief, health, and the long work of becoming whole. Key Takeaways Serious illness can expose everything already under strain in a relationship Addiction and cancer may look different, but both can force deep reckoning with identity, pain, and self-responsibility Caregiving can become overfunctioning if couples are not intentional about reciprocity Honesty has to be practiced, not assumed Recovery is not just individual; it reshapes the couple dynamic Love is not enough without accountability, boundaries, and tools Trust can be rebuilt, but it requires repeated truth-telling Healing together means learning how not to collapse into patient/caregiver roles forever Guest Info PetePete is the founder of Evolve Health https://www.evolvvhealth.com, where he supports cancer patients through coaching and resource navigation after his own experience with cancer treatment and recovery. He shares his vulnerable story of undergoing a robot-assisted radical prostatectomy and the unexpected shame and "erosion of dignity" caused by severe urinary incontinence. Francisco explains how his medical assumption that anatomical knowledge would ensure a fast recovery was wrong, and how pelvic floor physical therapy with biofeedback finally restored his function. The conversation advocates for a systemic shift toward "prehabilitation," arguing that men should start pelvic floor training weeks before surgery rather than being sent home with a pamphlet and diapers. Note: This episodes contains discussion and language of a sexual nature and may not be appropriate for all audiences. In this episode of Marrow Masters, we sit down with Dr. Christian Nelson, a psychologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and an expert in psycho-oncology, to address a deeply personal yet often overlooked topic: male sexual dysfunction following cancer treatment. Together, we explore how treatments can impact not only physical function but emotional well-being, identity, and relationships. We start by acknowledging that sexual dysfunction is one of the most common side effects of cancer treatment, second only to fatigue. Yet, it's rarely discussed. Dr. Nelson emphasizes the importance of normalizing the conversation and encouraging patients to raise the issue with their treatment teams. He walks us through the emotional toll that erectile dysfunction can take on men, noting how it strikes at the core of masculinity and can lead to increased depression, frustration, and a general sense of brokenness. He stresses that it's not just about what happens in the bedroom—erectile issues can spill over into all aspects of a man's life, including his relationship with his partner.Dr. Nelson outlines a range of treatment options, from well-known medications like Viagra to lesser-known but effective methods like penile injections and implants. He breaks down the fear around these options, especially injections, and highlights how pain levels are often far lower than anticipated. Beyond physical treatments, we discuss the emotional and relational work that's often required. One key issue is avoidance—men avoiding sexual situations due to performance anxiety, which can snowball into long-term distance and silence between partners. Dr. Nelson makes it clear: the real risk isn't failure, it's not trying. We also dive into how couples can redefine intimacy. Many men associate sex solely with penetration, while their partners often value closeness and emotional connection more. Dr. Nelson advocates for expanding the sexual repertoire and restoring non-sexual forms of affection, which can be just as meaningful. We talk about the impact of testosterone—how its depletion can lower libido and cause men to unknowingly withdraw from their partners—and how testosterone replacement may be a viable option for some, depending on cancer type and treatment history. As roles shift from caregiver back to partner post-treatment, Dr. Nelson stresses the importance of open communication. He urges couples to work toward understanding each other's perspectives, not convincing each other. He shares an "aha" moment involving a couple who waited five years before seeking help, only to reconnect within three sessions after simply opening the lines of communication. The takeaway: don't wait.We close by pointing listeners toward additional resources, including certified sex therapists and specialized urologists, and Dr. Nelson highlights two key professional directories: SSTAR and AASECT. We're reminded that even the simplest questions—like whether it's okay to kiss your partner—deserve answers. It's on all of us, both patients and providers, to make room for these conversations.More:Episode with Dr. Flores: https://marrowmasters.simplecast.com/episodes/mens-sexual-health-gvhdEpisode with Dr. El Jawahri: https://marrowmasters.simplecast.com/episodes/dr-el-jawahriSSTAR (Society for Sex Therapy and Research) – https://sstarnet.orgAASECT (American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists) – https://www.aasect.orgThanks to our Season 19 sponsors, Incyte and Sanofi.https://incyte.com/https://www.sanofi.com/en00:00 - Introduction to Season 19 and Dr. Christian Nelson  01:16 - Normalizing Conversations on Sexual Dysfunction  04:50 - Emotional Toll of Erectile Dysfunction  07:06 - Treatments: Pills, Injections, and Implants  09:03 - Avoidance and Anxiety in Sexual Relationships  12:17 - Expanding the Definition of Intimacy  16:43 - Role of Testosterone in Sexual Health  20:05 - Shifting from Caregiver to Partner  22:17 - Resources and Where to Get Help  26:29 - A Patient Story: Five Years of Silence  28:07 - Closing Thoughts and Resources   National Bone Marrow Transplant Link - (800) LINK-BMT, or (800) 546-5268.nbmtLINK Website: https://www.nbmtlink.org/nbmtLINK Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/nbmtLINKFollow the nbmtLINK on Instagram! https://www.instagram.com/nbmtlink/The nbmtLINK YouTube Page can be found by clicking here.To participate in the GVHD Mosaic, click here: https://amp.livemosaics.com/gvhd Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Sue walks us through her transplant journey, beginning with a difficult diagnosis in the late 1980s and the grueling induction chemotherapy that followed. With limited treatment options, she opted for an autologous bone marrow transplant—a relatively new and uncertain procedure at the time. Despite the intense side effects, including confusion and delusions, Sue recovered and slowly rebuilt her life. Her story is one of strength and long-term resilience, shaped by medical challenges and a determination to help others facing similar paths. After surviving her transplant, Sue felt driven to understand her experience and quickly saw the gap in patient-centered information. A high-profile court case involving bone marrow donation misinformation pushed her to act. In response, she started a small newsletter to provide reliable, understandable transplant information. What began with 700 names (pre-Internet) grew rapidly and became BMT InfoNet, an organization that now supports over 20,000 people weekly with resources, educational content, and peer support. We explore how GVHD care has transformed over the decades. Sue outlines progress in diagnostics, treatment options, and the move away from long-term steroid reliance. Her organization has helped shift the focus beyond survival to long-term quality of life, leading to the creation of survivorship clinics and a deeper understanding of transplant-related complications.Sue introduces us to BMT InfoNet's key programs, including Caring Connections, which matches patients and caregivers with peers based on similar experiences. We also learn about their online, professionally moderated support groups, offered to different patient communities. These groups have been instrumental in helping individuals process their experiences and stay connected. The organization's educational materials and annual survivorship symposium continue to empower patients to become active members of their care teams. Sue emphasizes the importance of recognizing symptoms early, understanding treatment options, and advocating for proper care—especially for GVHD, which many local doctors may not fully understand. Finally, Sue shares the story of how one patient's experience with ocular GVHD and scleral lenses led to a wider medical breakthrough. It's a powerful reminder of how patients can change the landscape of care by sharing their stories. BMT InfoNet's mission remains clear: provide support, share knowledge, and give voice to those on the transplant journey.BMT InfoNet: https://www.bmtinfonet.orgContact Email: help@bmtinfonet.orgThanks to our Season 19 sponsors, Incyte and Sanofi.https://incyte.com/https://www.sanofi.com/en00:40 - Introduction to Sue Stewart01:15 - Sue's AML Diagnosis and Transplant Story06:33 - Founding BMT InfoNet10:05 - Life Before the Internet: Lack of Resources12:43 - Progress in GVHD Treatment15:25 - Peer Support Through Caring Connections17:16 - Online Moderated Support Groups18:58 - Educational Resources on GVHD21:57 - GVHD Specialist Directory24:05 - Annual Survivorship Symposium26:17 - Financial Assistance for Patients27:39 - GVHD Wall of Hope and National GVHD Day30:01 - Final Story: How Patient Experience Changed GVHD Care National Bone Marrow Transplant Link - (800) LINK-BMT, or (800) 546-5268.nbmtLINK Website: https://www.nbmtlink.org/nbmtLINK Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/nbmtLINKFollow the nbmtLINK on Instagram! https://www.instagram.com/nbmtlink/The nbmtLINK YouTube Page can be found by clicking here.To participate in the GVHD Mosaic, click here: https://amp.livemosaics.com/gvhd Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Cancer Put Her in a Coma. She Survived. Her Near Death Experience Changed Everything. Mayim Bialik's Breakdown delves into Anita Moorjani's (renowned author, TedX speaker & self-help spiritual speaker) mind-blowing near-death experience (NDE) story and how it completely transformed her cancer, her path to healing & spiritual awakening, and how it changed the way she viewed life after death. Before her miraculous cancer recovery, Anita opens up like never before about the emotional toll of escaping an arranged marriage, her belief that neglecting her own needs while caring for others may have contributed to her cancer, and why living out of alignment with your true self can be toxic (and even deadly). Her integration journey post-NDE wasn't easy. Friends and family treated her like the same person — but she had touched something far greater than this world, and she couldn't go back. Anita Moorjani also breaks down: - Her belief that heaven is not a place, but a state of being - How we're all eternally connected — past, present, and future - Why intuition, self-love, & authenticity are the real medicine we've all been missing - How you're likely manifesting wrong - How Ayurveda and naturopathic healing deeply resonated with her healing journey - Difference between unconditional love (the kind people experience during NDEs) and earthly love - Why deepening your intuition starts with radical self-confidence - How letting go of what isn't authentically you is the key to ultimate healing This is not just a story about cancer — it's a wake-up call about life, death, spiritual awakening and the power of living as your truest self. Stress isn't just “in your head”—it changes your biology. It depletes nutrients like magnesium, vitamin C, B vitamins, and zinc, and keeps your body in survival mode. Supplements can help, but they won't heal you if the root cause—stress—remains. In this episode, I talk about why stress management is as critical as nutrition, how CBT and EMDR support your healing, and why lab testing matters before wasting money on supplements.   References from this episode: Juster R-P, McEwen BS, Lupien SJ.
