The prophet writes to exiles in Isaiah 40:1, “Comfort, comfort My people.” Gone is the scornful “this people” of Isaiah 6:9; rather, the herald declares “My people!” These words explode with comfort, for they reflect God's covenant promise at Sinai, “I will be your God, and you will be My people” (Exodus 6:7). Comfort comes in Isaiah 40:1 and pictorially in the words of Isaiah 40:11, “He will tend His flock like a Shepherd; He will gather the lambs in His arms; He will carry them in His bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.”

To the Babylonian exiles, the LORD has a word of double comfort. Their warfare is over; their sins are forgiven. A voice crying in the wilderness first announces this good news, preparing the way for the LORD to come to His repentant people. This good news is ultimately for all flesh, so that they would see the LORD's glory revealed. Although people are here today and gone tomorrow, the LORD's Word endures forever. That Word is proclaimed by Zion and Jerusalem, so that they would see their God as the One who defeats all their enemies and who tenderly leads His people as their Shepherd. Rev. Martin Dressler, pastor at Salem Lutheran Church in Black Jack, MO, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Isaiah 40:1-11. "The Fifth Evangelist” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through Isaiah 40-66. Though Isaiah lived one hundred years beforehand, he writes to the people of God in exile in Babylon to assure them that their God reigns and will rescue them through the work of His servant. These promises are fulfilled in Jesus Christ, whose work Isaiah proclaims vividly seven hundred years beforehand.

Sunday's Sermon: Aliso Creek Church Podcast Opening Song: Comfort, Comfort Ye My People (https://open.spotify.com/track/6k9BnXgDW8oBjrvj1wfjYZ?si=8971615d53f34608) by Catherine Winkworth and Johannes G. Olearius, arranged by Nathan Clark George Lyrics: Comfort ye my people Speak ye peace thus saith our God Comfort comfort Comfort those who sit in darkness Mourning 'neath their sorrow's load Speak ye to Jerusalem Of the peace that waits for them Tell her that her sins I cover And her warfare now is over Hark the voice of one that crieth In the desert far and near Bidding all souls to repentance Since the kingdom now is here O that warning cry obey Now prepare for God away Let the valleys rise to meet Him And the hills bow down to greet Him Make ye make ye Make ye straight what long was crooked Make the rougher places plain Let your hearts be true and humble As befits His holy reign For the glory of the Lord Now o'er the earth is shed abroad And all flesh shall see the token And all flesh shall see the token That His word is never broken Comfort ye my people Passage: 1 “Comfort, comfort my people,” says your God. 2 “Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and announce to her that her time of hard service is over, her iniquity has been pardoned, and she has received from the LORD's hand double for all her sins.” 3 A voice of one crying out: Prepare the way of the LORD in the wilderness; make a straight highway for our God in the desert. 4 Every valley will be lifted up, and every mountain and hill will be leveled; the uneven ground will become smooth and the rough places, a plain. 5 And the glory of the LORD will appear, and all humanity together will see it, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken. 6 A voice was saying, “Cry out!” Another said, “What should I cry out?” “All humanity is grass, and all its goodness is like the flower of the field. 7 The grass withers, the flowers fade when the breath of the LORD blows on them; indeed, the people are grass. 8 The grass withers, the flowers fade, but the word of our God remains forever.” 9 Zion, herald of good news, go up on a high mountain. Jerusalem, herald of good news, raise your voice loudly. Raise it, do not be afraid! Say to the cities of Judah, “Here is your God!” 10 See, the Lord GOD comes with strength, and his power establishes his rule. His wages are with him, and his reward accompanies him. 11 He protects his flock like a shepherd; he gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them in the fold of his garment. He gently leads those that are nursing. (Isaiah 40:1-11 CSB17) Musical Reflection: Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus, tune by Rowland Hugh Prichard Reflection Notes: This jubilant Advent text was written by the well-known hymn writer, Charles Wesley. While several tunes have been used over the years, one of the most popular for the Advent season is HYFRIDOL, a lilting Welsh melody composed by Rowland Hugh Prichard in the early nineteenth century. Prayer: This is another day, O Lord. I know not what it will bring forth, but make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may be. If I am to stand up, help me to stand bravely. If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly. If I am to lie low, help me to do it patiently. And if I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly. Make these words more than words, and give me the Spirit of Jesus. Amen.

Trinity College hosted its 64th annual Christmas Festival of Lessons and Carols in the Chapel on Sunday, December 10, marking the beginning of the holiday season for the Greater Hartford community. Lessons and Carols is offered to all as a moment of comfort and hope. In its recounting of the Christmas story, the service involves the reading of nine lessons, each followed by the singing of a carol. Contributions to a freewill offering supported students in need, as well as international humanitarian relief efforts. This year's special Bicentennial event featured a newly commissioned work by David Hurd, a setting of a portion of Psalm 96, “Sing to the Lord a New Song,” dedicated to Trinity College Board of Trustees Chair Lisa Bisaccia '78 and Robert Naparstek, whose generosity has supported the Chapel Music Program. The program also featured music by alumni and community composers Paul Lindsley Thomas '50; Dudley Buck, Class of 1859; Robert Edward Smith, Chapel composer-in-residence since 1979; and Douglas Bruce Johnson, professor of music, emeritus. Rev. Andy Wright, pastor at St. John's Lutheran Church in Topeka, KS, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Lutheran Service Book #347, “Comfort, Comfort, Ye My People.” This beautiful Advent hymn summarizes the Word of God from Isaiah 40 to give us Christian comfort. God sends His messengers to proclaim peace to us in the midst of our sorrows and sins. This peace comes from the fact that God forgives our sins for the sake of Christ and covers us with His righteousness. God works this great reversal for us to take us from temporary sadness to eternal gladness. For that reason, we must listen to the preachers God sends to call us to repentance so that nothing stands in the way of His coming as our King. In that humble repentance, we find our rest in the promises of God, because we know that His Word will never fail. “The Hymns of Advent'' is a series on Sharper Iron that looks at a variety of the hymns found in the Advent section Lutheran Service Book. The season of Advent prepares us for Christ's coming. The hymns of Advent teach that this is more than getting ready for Christmas; the Word of the Lord sung in hymnody helps us to receive Christ as He comes to us now in the means of grace and when He comes again in glory on the Last Day.

Kerry provides the historical and spiritual background to help us understand how Judah got to where they were largely destroyed, and how they got to where Jerusalem was spared, and what the famous lines about comforting God's people means in light of that, and what we can learn from that. Our gratitude to our sponsor, Lisa Spice, and to Alexia Muhlestein for editing this episode, and to Rich Nicholls for composing and playing the music for the podcast.

September 19-25 Isaiah's very name means The Lord is Salvation. In this week's chapters (40-49) we get a clear message that there is no other God but Jehovah, who is Jesus Christ. We cannot turn to the world, we cannot turn to idols, we cannot turn to those around us, we can only turn to the one true God. He has made a covenant with His chosen servants (those who will follow Him), the posterity and adopted ones of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The Spirit of the Lord is poured out upon all those who keep the covenant and they will also receive the Lord's protection and covenant blessings. We welcome our dear friend, Dr. Kerry Muhlestein, this week as we dive deep into Isaiah.
