The state budget is complete, but really not finished. Pam Jahnke finds out how crafting this state budget took a turn when the federal "Big Beautiful Bill" was being crafted at the same time. State Senator Pat Testin is vice chair of the Joint Finance Committee. He also serves as chair of the Senate Agriculture and Revenue Committee. He tells Jahnke that there were conversations or compromise throughout the statehouse, but there are items that are left to be dealt with. Some severe weather overnight in extreme southern Wisconsin gets the attention of Stu Muck. USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins explained the details. In rural Wisconsin, residents can call 911 but may wait as much as an hour for emergency staff to respond. It's a dire situation that James Small with the Office of Rural Health is drawing attention to. A recent survey of fire chiefs statewide showed that 85% of rural fire departments depend entirely on volunteers. Small says there's also expense! Not just the staff, but also the equipment. Small says the average fire engine truck once cost around $400,000. Today he says that same rig can go over a million dollars in expense. That's a lot of money for rural communities to generate. Stephanie Hoff delivers the details.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Beginning June 1, dairy producers and processors will see noticeable changes to the way milk is priced. After years of discussion and debate, finally the Federal Milk Marketing Orders have seen some revision. In Wisconsin, that could mean some lower prices initially. Leonard Polzin, UW-Extension Dairy Markets and Policy Outreach Specialist, has done all the modeling for the new orders. He says everything continues to focus on the value of fluid milk, but it also should protect Wisconsin dairy operators for big losses when other categories are in demand. Bob Bosold gets the breakdown.Memorial weekend may not be real warm in Wisconsin, but it should be dry. Stu Muck goes through the weekend forecast which still has a frost advisory out for much of northern Wisconsin.Thursday the Make America Healthy Again commission finally released their much anticipated report. Agriculture was quick to respond with overall disappointment. Chad Smith speaks with Sam Kieffer, vice president of public policy for the American Farm Bureau for reaction. Kieffer says any efforts to adjust the food system have to be based on science. Some people are looking forward to camping this Memorial weekend. Sheila Everhart, executive director of the Wisconsin Agricultural Tourism Association(WATA) tells Pam Jahnke that one of the most popular breaks for people is to "glamp". Basically that's a camping experience in a unique location - like a farm. In Wisconsin, however, that can come with permit expense and inspection. Everhart says WATA is working on changing language in state statutes that would allow farms to offer campsites for up to 3 locations without that requirement. Everhart says it's just a language change with no expense to tax payers, but the senator that's working on the bill says he wants at least 10 farmers to commit to testify for the change before he'll introduce it. Spring planting continues as weather allows. Matt Wagenson, grower and board member of the Wisconsin Soybean Marketing Board, gives Pam Jahnke a quick planting update from his tractor cab. Wagenson says they just concluded a consumer survey designed to find out both opinion and knowledge of what soybean growers do and provide to them product-wise. Wagenson tells Jahnke that older consumers generally still have confidence in farmers and the practices they use. Younger demographics however are less engaged, and have less knowledge about the unique products they use everyday that contain soy-based products. In this powerful Memorial Day episode of American Potential, host David From is joined by Marine Corps veteran Adam Jahnke, now a Strategic Director at Concerned Veterans for America, to reflect on the true meaning of the holiday through the stories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Adam shares deeply personal memories of his fellow Marines—Corporal René Martinez, Lance Corporal Donald Chaplain, and others—who were killed while serving in Iraq. He also talks candidly about the realities of combat, the emotional toll of survivor's guilt, and his journey of recovery after being wounded in 2006. This conversation goes beyond the headlines and ceremonies. It's a sobering, heartfelt reminder that Memorial Day is not just a time for relaxation—it's a time to honor lives lost, to tell their stories, and to recognize the lasting impact on those who served alongside them. Adam challenges us to rethink how we observe Memorial Day—not just with gratitude, but with intention: by reaching out, listening, and ensuring that the sacrifices of our fallen heroes are never forgotten.

We may not see a Farm Bill moving yet - but in the state of Wisconsin, there's policy decisions coming together quickly. Bob Bosold catches up with Jordan Lamb, legal advisor to many agriculture organizations in Wisconsin. The conversation covers everything from the governor's upcoming proposed budget to existing programs continued performance.A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for a large part of Wisconsin today. Stu Muck gives us an hourly breakdown on how quickly the snow will be moving in.Steffes Group auction company was visible at the WI Corn/Soy Expo. That's where Pam Jahnke caught up with Ashley Huhn to talk about the current overall value he's seen in used equipment. Huhn says prices may be a little lower than fourth quarter 2024, but still firm versus new. Paid for by Steffes Group. While the federal government has pushed pause on some funding that was helping Wisconsin farmers with things like conservation efforts - Wisconsin's governor is proposing more funding for the state's agriculture. Stephanie Hoff captured a few quotes from Organic Valley and Edge Dairy Cooperative on how they're monitoring federal funds being frozen. Both agree, it's a 'wait and see' situation.Pam Jahnke gets some details on what Governor Tony Evers would like to see adopted in his 2025-27 budget, which he'll be offering later this month. Wisconsin Ag Secretary, Randy Romanski, tells Jahnke that currently there's $80 million in investments being proposed including more money for farmers mental health services, the popular ARIP(Ag Road Improvement Program) getting more money, and a new pilot - Dairy Agriculture Resilience Investment Now Grant (DARING) Program aimed at supporting on-farm projects that improve resilience and efficiency of farm operations, such as upgrading IT infrastructure, milking equipment, or milk processing equipment.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
With a major winter storm approaching the state, it's important to know why those systems now play a role in spring weather later. Pam Jahnke talks with Eric Snodgrass, Principal Atmospheric Scientist for Conduit. Snodgrass admits he's a "nerd" for weather, and has been his whole life. He explains to Jahnke why the fires in California and the snow in Florida signal a need to push "reset" with some big storms in the Midwest if we'd like to see a normal spring. Wisconsin will see some measurable snow arriving by some time on Wednesday. Stu Muck breaks down its advance. School districts may have good intentions when it comes to serving locally sourced foods, but finding it is another issue. Stephanie Hoff talks to a farmer from Oconto county who's been appointed to the Dept. of Public Instructions Farm-to-School board. David Lee Schneider is a diversified farmer from Oconto who says Wisconsin got a federal grant to build a database of farms and schools to help connect these two entities. Now it's ready to use! He explains how the program works. Pam Jahnke recognizes three young people that were presented scholarships from the WI Pork Association. John Heinberg, market advisor with Total Farm Marketing in West Bend, says the market's watching the new round of tariff threats. The president's advancing a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum that's got agriculture wondering how it will be impacted. Meanwhile winter wheat is getting some support because of dry winter weather in the plains.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this conversation with the guys, Dr. Roger Jahnke shares his journey into the realms of yoga, Tai Chi, and Qigong in the late 1960s. He reflects on how personal experiences as a young man in Ohio, along with a road trip across the country, shaped his spiritual growth. He recounts the ‘mesmerizing' experience of watching a young Chinese engineering student lead a small Tai Chi class in a park in Berkeley, and how that moment sparked his interest in Chinese medicine. Dr. Jahnke discusses how the Eastern arts influenced his career within "the medical industrial complex," ultimately leading him down a path toward alternative healing practices with the discovery of Tai Chi and Qigong. Dr. Jahnke also explores the historical roots and benefits of Qigong and Tai Chi, their similarities to the practice of yoga, and the importance of engaging with one's inner self. He emphasizes managing consciousness and embracing the physiological benefits of these mind-body practices, which foster discernment and personal empowerment, enabling individuals to experience life more fully. I hope everyone is enjoying the unseasonably warm weather of November (though it makes me double down in my own awareness and efforts for a sustainable climate positive future). Today I had the best time recording this episode with a colleague I've known from the holistic pharmacy field for quite some time and we chat about taking control of your health, and living your healthiest, happiest life possible. I'm thrilled to introduce Rene Jahnke —a pharmacist-turned-holistic practitioner with a powerful story of taking control of her health and transforming her life. After working as a pharmacist and pharmacy manager for 26 years, she realized that putting everyone else's needs first had taken a toll on her own mental and physical health. That wake-up call led her to pursue her passion for holistic health, training through various courses, and ultimately earning her Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner Certification in September 2023. Today, she not only works as the Course Administrator at FDN, supporting and cheering on students as they grow in their health journeys, but she also runs her own business, Wellness Rx Integrative Health. Through her practice, she focuses on helping women in their 40s and 50s balance hormones, heal their gut, and reclaim control of their health. Rene's story is a powerful reminder that you *can* live your healthiest, happiest life while thriving in a fulfilling career.
