Classic Christmas songs point us back to the Old Testament's expectations of Jesus: "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," "Hark! the Herald Angels Sing," "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming," or "Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus." Let's not ignore the foundation of God's promises that Jesus came to stand on! With Matthew's Gospel, the Bible introduces Jesus as the long-awaited, much-anticipated Fulfiller of God's promises. We're excited for you to join us this Sunday as we look to Jesus together in Matthew 1:1-17.
Christmas hymns can have deep theology and cause us to ponder the greatness of the child. Today, we meditate on his all-sufficient merit from a line of Charles Wesley's hymn, Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus.

Advent Proclaimed: Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus Luke 2:1-20The Village Chapel - 12/24/2024Wonder, Worship and WitnessDisenchantment. It's a word that describes much of our modern and post-modern ennui. We live in a world that has turned away from transcendence and perhaps that is why wonder has been eclipsed by cynicism, worship is given to ephemeral pleasures, and witness so often feels hollow and hypocritical. In Luke 2:1-20, we find an antidote to this disenchantment. The birth of Christ draws us into a story that rekindles our sense of wonder, redirects our worship, and compels us to become witnesses of God's glory and grace.Join Pastor Jim as he leads us out into the ordinary fields of the shepherds, down into the Bethlehem stable, and into the greatest story ever told about when God became one of us.To find more resources like these, follow us:Website: https://thevillagechapel.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQVTzDbaiXVUAm_mUBDCTJAInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/tvcnashville/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tvcnashvilleX: https://twitter.com/tvcnashvilleTo support the ongoing mission of The Village Chapel go to https://thevillagechapel.com/give/. Advent Fully Realized: Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus Revelation 19:11-16; 21:1-7; 22:1-21The Village Chapel - 12/22/2024What has Revelation got to do with Advent? The apostle John wrote with the heart of a pastor, the voice of a poet, the insight of a prophet, and the depth of a theologian. In the book of Revelation, John delivers the promise that the Advent story is not yet complete. In fact, he assures us that the best is yet to come! The child born in humility, who died in ignominy, and rose again in victory, has promised to return to this world one day and set the world to rights, to make all things new. Christ's birth and death proved His great love for us. Christ's resurrection displayed His great power to save us. And based upon these historical realities, we believe and now proclaim His great promise to return one day at His second coming.Join Pastor Jim as he walks us through some of the events recorded at the end of the book of Revelation in a study titled: Advent Fully Realized. To find more resources like these, follow us:Website: https://thevillagechapel.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQVTzDbaiXVUAm_mUBDCTJAInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/tvcnashville/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tvcnashvilleX: https://twitter.com/tvcnashvilleTo support the ongoing mission of The Village Chapel go to https://thevillagechapel.com/give/. Advent Fulfilled: Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus Matthew 1:18-2:12The Village Chapel - 12/15/2024The Advent season is full of promise and hope, of watching and waiting for the coming of the long-expected Messiah, who will save His people from their sins. In Matthew's gospel, we read of Old Testament prophecies that are being fulfilled in the birth of Jesus. We watch as the promise of rescue and redemption, which began in the Garden, unfolds before our eyes. What can we learn from this ancient text? Does God still keep His promises, even today?Join Pastor Matt as we look at the promises of God that are fulfilled in Jesus. To find more resources like these, follow us:Website: https://thevillagechapel.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQVTzDbaiXVUAm_mUBDCTJAInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/tvcnashville/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tvcnashvilleX: https://twitter.com/tvcnashvilleTo support the ongoing mission of The Village Chapel go to https://thevillagechapel.com/give/. Passage: 1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, while Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Iturea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 2 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, God's word came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the vicinity of the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, 4 as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah: A voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way for the Lord; make his paths straight! 5 Every valley will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be made low; the crooked will become straight, the rough ways smooth, 6 and everyone will see the salvation of God. -- Luke 3:1-6 (CSB) Song: Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus (https://open.spotify.com/track/76rADNRd3LHK9cDszKtkWl?si=264519e48cad47fe) by Charles Wesley, Rita West Gernon, Rowland Hugh Prichard Lyrics: Come Thou long expected Jesus Born to set thy people free From our fears and sins release us Let us find our rest in thee Israel's strength and consolation Hope of all the earth thou art Dear desire of every nation Joy of every longing heart Born thy people to deliver Born a child and yet a King Born to reign in us forever Now thy gracious kingdom bring By thine own eternal Spirit Rule in all our hearts alone By thine all sufficient merit Raise us to thy glorious throne You're our joy You're our hope Israel's strength and consolation Hope of all the earth thou art Dear desire of every nation Joy of every longing heart Prayer: The Lord's Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name; your kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. There is a scarlet cord woven throughout all Scripture. God had a plan for the redemption of mankind. His plan was Jesus Christ. For centuries, women wondered if they would be chosen to be the mother of the promised Redeemer. Out of the pages of history, God chose Mary to have that honored privilege. Jesus Christ has come and paid the price for our sins. He fufilled all the longings of man's heart. That is why we celebrate Christmas! But He is coming again! Come thou long expected Jesus! Advent Promised: Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus Isaiah 9:2-7The Village Chapel - 12/08/2024Advent is a season of waiting and watching for the promises of God to be fulfilled. The prophet Isaiah, writing some seven centuries before the time of Christ, points forward to the hope of one who would come with the power to set right what had been broken in the rebellion of the Garden. Like our own day, Isaiah's was marked by moral, relational, cultural and spiritual darkness. Isaiah offers us the sure hope that the darkness will come to an end, it has an expiration date. The “joy of every longing heart” can be finally and fully satisfied in the person of Jesus—the Light of the World. He has come, is with us now by his Spirit, and will come again. In this Christmas sermon, Pastor Brent dives into the classic hymn "Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus," unpacking how Jesus came with a mission to free people from their struggles and be a life-changing king. Breaking down the 280-year-old song, Brent highlights that Jesus isn't just a distant ruler, but someone who wants to bring hope and healing into people's hearts today.
