Len Fridman was laid off from his corporate job in 2009 after nearly a decade, and upon doing a bit of soul searching, he decided to pursue his passion for fitness instead of continuing on in "corporate life." He started a small boot camp business in a local park which quickly went on to become the most successful outdoor program in Canada in multiple cities. Eventually, a need/business frustration presented itself on the software side, which then led him to his Co-Founder Sasha Davids, who promptly jumped onboard. They started out small but have now scaled to where WellnessLiving is now quietly powering 5,000 studios, and were recognized by Deloitte in the Fast 500 and Fast 50 in Canada. Len was able to bring on Don Williams, their Chief Revenue Officer after recently securing a $66M investment from McCarthy Capital. With a team of 354 strong and growing, WellnessLiving is able to create amazing tools with the sole goal of helping fitness studios continue to expand. He loves giving back to the community as well. WellnessLiving is behind the extremely successful Stand with Studios grant program. On their recent growth, Len states, "We selected McCarthy Capital really for one main reason: Our vision and goals were completely aligned. Their whole thing . . . they love to see companies grow, but more importantly, they want to make sure that the staff of those companies, that they evolve, that they grow as individuals . . . if they have families, they want to send their kids to college, and so on. It's just a complete alignment of values and vision. We're here to grow now." Be sure and visit WellnessLiving at booth #3351 at the IHRSA 2023 trade show in San Diego! In this episode, Len and Pete discuss: 1. How a layoff in 2009 led to the creation of the most successful outdoor boot camp program in Canada and Len's initial journey into entrepreneurship. 2. The journey of building a platform to facilitate bookings and scaling a business to 5,000 participating locations. 3. The success story of a growing software company to 354 people strong and contributing to the boutique fitness community. Click here to download transcript. In this episode, Derek Flanzraich discusses his journey as an entrepreneur and how he is using his new company, Ness, to democratize access to health, in part by using credit cards to incentivize healthy behaviors. Derek Flanzraich initially started as the CEO and Founder of Greatist, a company that later became the the leading health and wellness media company for Millennials. He is currently the CEO and Founder of Ness, a credit card company that rewards people for making healthy choices. When he started digging deeper into (some of the many problem with health care in this country!) he states, "There's just no denying that no matter how friendly you make health and wellness, it still is very expensive and hard to afford for most people. And I was hit sort of smack in the face with this about a year and a half ago, which was about a year and a half after I sold my last company . . . Why is it that health insurance, which seems like it should care about your long term health, actually doesn't?" Derek talks about learning how using credit cards to incentivize healthy behavior can lead to very positive outcomes. He discovered that the current system has a disincentive for health plans to actually care about your long term health and that leads to the health inequity and tragic outcomes we have. He and some friends started to work on a big, audacious idea: Could you create a health insurance plan that would stick with people long enough that you could actually justify investing in their long term health in the short term? They landed on a credit card (to start) as the best way to build a relationship with people to eventually offer them long term health insurance. In this episode, you will learn: 1. How does Ness, plan to use a credit card to incentivize health and wellness? 2. Why recruiters are critical for entrepreneurs just starting out. 3. What are the implications of health insurance plans that don't care about long-term health? 4. How does the credit card rewards system for Ness work? Click here to download transcript. On this episode, Philip spoke with his former boss Derek Flanzraich who is the CEO and Founder of Greatist. Greatist is health and wellness media startup for millennials. Derek is the son of 2 medical doctors and he grew up on the west coast before moving to Miami at age 11. He later went on to study at Harvard University where he found his passion for media and content creation. After graduating from college he went on to work at a high flying startup which would go on to exit just after 6 months of him joining. As someone who openly admits to struggling with his weight, he decided he would start a health and wellness blog with a group of friends which wasn’t intimidating but informative where every post was backed by a scientific study. Today, Greatist has 12 million readers per month and what’s really impressive is... it’s all organic. They’ve raised $8m to date and have some rockstar investors including; Gary Vanerchuck, Ramit Sethi from I Will Teach You How To Be Rich, Ann Mi
Derek Flanzraich, CEO of one of the fastest growing health and wellness sites, Greatist, joined Jerry for our very first podcast episode in 2014 to share the story of his personal journey over the last 10 months. His journey of introspection started when he attended the first CEO bootcamp and began to reflect on a personal challenge, which ultimately lead him to a solution to a business challenge that could have destroyed his business. In this conversation, Jerry and Derek talk about how in our challenges at work lies a conversation about what impacted who we are and how we relate to life, work, and money. Derek’s openness and introspection may inspire you to re-examine how your own stories, upbringing and past experiences are impacting your business and your life. Mark Sisson chats with Derek Flanzraich—an entrepreneur on a mission to give everyone a "healthyish" attitude. He is the CEO & Founder of Greatist, a next-generation media startup working to make healthy living cool and build a truly trusted consumer-facing healthy living brand. Greatist reaches more than 10 million unique visitors per month. Flanzraich was previously with Clicker.com (acquired by CBS) and NBC Universal's Digital Entertainment Strategy & Operations, graduated from Harvard, and has been building brands and organizations that last since his dog-walking business at 10 years old. Besides everything health and wellness, he also loves theme parks and theme bars.
Do you ever feel like everyone else is running circles around you while you're walking through quicksand toward success? If you're like me, you're probably nodding your head vigorously, right? I thought so. Whether it's business success, achieving that ever-elusive "healthy lifestyle," or making an impact in the world, the pressure to perform is real. A lot of times I find myself all tied up in mixed messages: one day someone's telling me to do what works for me, the next day they're telling me a $500 supplement is the answer to all my problems. One day I'm encouraged to go slow and steady, the next I'm being sold a recipe for overnight success. My life naturally ebbs and flows - sometimes I'm in periods of fast growth and rapid success, but most of the time it's about those small shifts or baby steps. So when websites, blogs, celebrities, influencers, etc etc etc etc tell me one thing but show me another, it can begin to feel like there's this pressure to keep up. Especially in the "health and wellness" space. The one site I have always turned to for no-bs advice that actually works for me and respects who I am is Greatist. It's a website and media company that truly talks the walk and walks the talk of living a healthy, happy life in a realistic, authentic, true-to-you way. Have a little too much to drink this weekend? That's cool, we'll help you feel better. No time for a workout today - like, really, no time? Don't stress about it. Having trouble at work or making friends as an adult? We feel you. Greatist never judges, has always "been there too," and never pretends like we need to overhaul our life to make it what we want it to be. I've been die-hard obsessed with Greatist since they launched in 2011 - you'll hear more about why in today's episode. I know a lot of brands say they're all about this...but Greatist is one of the only ones that actually means what they say. It's not about being the healthiest all the time, it's about being healthy-ish. And as today's WANTcast guest told me, it's not about being the greatest all the time. It's about working on greatness like an artist works on art. It's about being a great-ist. Derek Flanzraich is an entrepreneur on a mission to give everyone a healthyish attitude. He is the CEO & Founder of Greatist, a next-generation media startup working to make healthy living cool and build the first truly trusted healthy living brand for this generation. Derek's been building brands and organizations that last since his dog-walking business at 10 years old, so he knows a thing or two about what it takes to create something with long-term value and meaning. I love our conversation so much. In this episode, Derek and I talk about building a brand that lasts, taking hits and making compromises, and the gaping hole in the health and wellness industry that led Derek to found Greatist. We also talk about the state of masculinity, the future of gender neutrality, the three things anyone can do to live a "healthy-ish" life, and why health and wellness can't just begin and end with food or exercise. We had a blast together - he is truly a WANT Man through and through. So down to earth, so genuine, and so the embodiment of this brand he's created. I mean, anyone that can play Drake-related games with me and not think I'm a crazy person is an A+ human being in my book. Don't ask. Just take a listen.
This week Brett takes a totally different angle on The Paleo Diet with Derek Flanzraich. Derek is the founder & ceo of Greatist, a next-generation media startup working to make healthy living cool and build the first truly trusted consumer-facing healthy living brand for this generation. In this episode the boys talk about what healthy really Listen In The post TPS 212: Healthy’ish’ with Derek Flanzraich appeared first on The Wellness Couch.
Derek Flanzraich started Greatist, a health media company, just after college and 5 years later has over 10 million users a month. We explore what inspired him to start the company and how he’s navigated some of the trickier challenges. He shares how meditation and taking time off every six months help him to be a calmer, more focused leader.
There's a common thread in a lot of entrepreneurs' stories: They were facing a problem, couldn't find the solution they were looking for, so went ahead and built it themselves. That's exactly what Derek Flanzraich did when he started Greatist, a digital media startup that's all about health and fitness, without all the fluff and in-your-face marketing. As someone who has struggled with his weight his entire life, Flanzraich wanted to find a brand that would talk to him on a personal level and not as another client. Frustrated by the fact that the world was becoming more health conscious, yet at the time seemed to be more interested in shaming those who wanted to get in shape, Flanzraich set out to stake his own claim in an oversaturated market. The key difference, though, was that instead of making his audience feel bad, he would make them feel welcome. "It wasn't actually about the quality of what we're doing, which we felt that was gonna be best in class or whatever. It was actually the voice that really stuck out," Flanzraich says. It was a simple change in language, but its message connected with an underserved audience that would eventually translate into 10 million unique visitors every month. In an era where it seems like every media company is striving for page views above all else, and pumping out nothing but clickbait articles with little substance in order to attract them, Greatist takes a different approach. "We don't think quantity is a metric that matters. Just like I don't think, increasingly, uniques and page views is a metric that matters. All of these things can be gained and aren't inherently valuable on their own," he says. Greatist is now one of the world's most trusted brands when it comes to anything about health, fitness, and happiness. It's commitment to keeping a friendly and personal tone in all of its content has resonated with millennials throughout the world. With such a commitment to quality over quantity over everything else, Flanzraich has built from the ground up the kind of branding and engagement that most companies would kill for. In this episode you will learn: Why you'll never be ready to be an entrepreneur, and why that's okay How to find a voice and tone that resonates with your audience How to calculate your long-term brand value Flanzraich's unique approach to content and how it holds up against the SEO-focused practices of others What it means to build a powerhouse brand and how to do it & much more!
In this episode, Mike speaks with Derek Flanzraich, the founder/CEO of Greatist. They talk about the idea of planning, time chunking, and many other things that allow them to push our intentions forward (and allow Derek to embody the term "greatist"). This is definitely more of a conversation than an interview, as Derek and Mike exchange ideas and thoughts on making choices, being productive, and how they make sure they allocate attention to push their intentions forward.
