Alex Hutchinson: A Friendly Debate About The Benefits Of Running

Enjoy this second show with Alex, where we left the mic on after our interview emphasizing his book, The Explorer’s Gene, and started talking about Mark Sisson and my new book, Born To Walk. We planned to have a “friendly debate” about the book’s premise that running is a bad idea for most people. Alex, as a longtime runner, had a much different basic notion—that running is a rich and meaningful form of enjoying recreation, physical fitness and health. Well, there were no fireworks during our talk, but rather a nuanced discussion of the benefits of running when you do it correctly. The best takeaway from Alex is: If you are able to run and recover from running workouts, it’s great. But of course you must avoid overtraining. Enjoy our discussion and please check out Alex’s excellent column in Outside magazine online called Sweat Science. Visit alexhutchinson.net for more details. TIMESTAMPS: Alex, a long time runner and promoter of endurance running, brings his perspective to Brad as they discuss the book Born to Walk. [00:46] Alex is not as worried about the dangers of training at too high a level. [09:30] There are no magic bullets for dropping excessive weight. [14:31] Don’t be under the impression that running a marathon is the path to better health. [16:49] If you have aches and pains after running, don’t run more. It is not going to make your pain better. [18:25] A 10K would be an amazing achievement for the average generally inactive person. If they worked hard and prepared properly for six months, it'd be all a celebration in every direction. [21:02] The longevity research is pointing toward attributes like your strength training regimen. Is walking the new running for midlife fat loss? Learn the benefits and why walking for midlife fat loss works so well.  I've shared - and will link to - two episodes recently linking the benefits of walking to both my personal experience and science-based results from walking. See other episodes you might like below! An elite athlete joins us today to share his thoughts on walking for midlife fat loss.   My Guest: Brad Kearns, Mark Sisson's co-author on The Keto Reset Diet, boasts a diverse athletic career as a US national champion triathlete and Guinness World Record speed golfer. His B.rad podcast is a top-ranked Apple Podcasts favorite in the Fitness category, showcasing his dedication to fitness and health innovation.   Longevity Mindset Why Brad is determined to live to 100+ and how you can, too. Stay Young at Heart: Brad shares why surrounding yourself with younger, vibrant friends keeps your spirit (and body) youthful. Live Long, Drop Dead: Embrace the idea of living vibrantly until the very end—no long declines, just a sharp drop when it's time. Compress Morbidity: Aim to delay the onset of age-related issues for as long as possible—live fully, then go quickly and peacefully. Set Big Goals: Whether it's mastering a new sport or planning to hike the Appalachian Trail (but maybe not camping, as Deb jokes!), staying future-focused boosts longevity. Plan for 100+: Brad isn't just aiming for 100 years—he's got a game plan for reaching 110 and beyond!   Fat-Burning Wisdom Fat Max Heart Rate: Keep exercise at a comfortable pace to maximize fat burning. Walking vs. Running: Walking is kinder on your body and great for fat loss — no guilt if you're not a runner! High-Intensity Training: Short bursts of intense effort with plenty of rest boost metabolism for days.   Key Takeaways for Walking for Midlife Fat Loss Ditch the “Shoulds”: You don't have to run or do hardcore workouts to be fit. The Power of Walking: It's not “just walking”—it's a metabolic and mental game-changer. Micro Workouts: Little movements throughout the day add up—think squats while waiting for coffee! Longevity Strategy: The goal isn't just to live longer but to thrive with energy and strength. Questions We Answer in This Episode: Do you focus on female science, female clients or a mixture of both?  What does a typical day look like for you? Is running or walking better for fitness? How does rephrasing to “Which is better for fatness, running or walking?” change the perspective? How can we empower listeners to know when running is okay and when it's too stressful? Explain how walking helps women lose fat more effectively than running, especially given the focus on calorie burn over hormonal balance. How many steps a day should someone aim for? Michael Brandt: The Performance and Brain Benefits of Supplemental Ketones

The B.rad Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 1, 2025 72:41

I welcome Michael Brandt, co-founder and CEO of Ketone IQ, to the show for a conversation about supplemental ketones! Ketone IQ offers supplemental ketones, or ketones on the go, for an instant high performance energy source. I have talked about the ketogenic diet for many years, writing many books with Mark Sisson about the amazing benefits of the ketogenic state for anti-inflammatory and immune boosting and antioxidant and protein sparing, and the keto diet has risen to popularity and become a huge fad. However, it is a little difficult to adhere to this extremely strict dietary protocol to limit carbs to the extent that you force your liver to make ketones internally. So a wonderful breakthrough in high performance supplemental technology is the availability of consuming what they call exogenous ketones—outside source of ketones—directly for athletic performance recovery and improved brain function. I have been excited about this technology for many years now and tested these products out over time, and while Michael does talk a little bit about his product, this episode is not really a commercial show. You will hear about the benefits of ketones in general, and we also talk about his own high performance athletic training, athletic training regimen, and how pursuing these daunting goals that we put up there with our competitive aspirations carry over into all aspects of daily life. I hope you enjoy this conversation, which ended up being a really interesting one centered around being the best you can be and learning about this exciting, cutting edge intervention for your training, which is supplemental ketones. You will hear all about my experience using this product on my Cactus to Clouds hike, how I felt an immediate boost in mental clarity, as you often hear about people talking about when it comes to following a ketogenic diet. If you’re an athlete, it is a really useful supplement because it plays an important role in athletic performance by keeping your brain engaged and well fueled so that your body can work as best as it can—there’s a reason why he’s got Tour de France athletes using them, as well as Ironman Legends, and MMA fighters. It’s really cutting edge stuff and I think you're going to get a lot of value out of it and probably want to try the product. If you do, I have a special discount for you and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how effective supplemental ketones are. The Ketone IQ product is a special type of formulation called a ketone diol that has a longer lasting duration in your bloodstream. I think it’s a great product, one I use a lot myself, and I welcome the idea to learn more about it. Enjoy this episode with Michael Brandt, a former marathon runner with such an interesting story to share, who founded Ketone IQ on the heels of getting a huge grant from the United States government to research the benefits of supplemental ketones for soldiers. Michael Brandt (@michaeldbrant) is an avid triathlete and marathoner, and co-founder and CEO of KetoneIQ. A lifelong student and leader of designing products around new technologies and emerging needs. Prior to starting KetoneIQ, he received his BS in Computer Science & Design at Stanford, was a Product Manager at Google, and Adjunct Professor at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, California. Your body might be fighting against you when you push too hard in exercise, activating powerful compensatory mechanisms that can undermine your goals. In this eye-opening episode, we cover the critical "compensation theory of exercise" that reveals why high-intensity workouts often lead to less overall activity and compromised metabolic health. Brad Kearns, co-author of Born to Walk, makes a compelling case for walking as not merely another exercise option but a fundamental human necessity—as essential as sleep—supporting everything from brain health to hormonal balance. The destructive "struggle and suffer" mentality sold by the fitness industry is leading to astonishing injury rates among runners while sabotaging our fat-burning capabilities. Former professional triathlete Brad Kearns challenges conventional exercise wisdom, revealing how the running boom created by cushioned shoes and cultural programming has led countless well-intentioned fitness enthusiasts into patterns of chronic injury, hormonal disruption, and sugar addiction. In his book, Born to Walk, he shares the "fat max heart rate" concept, which explains why gentler movement patterns—particularly walking—may better serve our health and longevity goals than the punishing cardio routines we've been programmed to believe are necessary! The romanticized notion that humans are "born to run" has buoyed the so-called running boom of the past 50 years: well-intentioned fitness enthusiasts lacing up their cushioned shoes and plodding down roads and trails in pursuit of the runner's high, a trim physique, and the fountain of youth. Unfortunately, "born to run" is a big, fat ruse—a marketing gimmick and a gross misappropriation of evolutionary biology's insights into Homo sapiens' genetic attributes for endurance. While any movement away from a sedentary-dominant lifestyle is laudable, the truth is that humans are actually born to walk, not run. Angela talks to health and fitness legend Mark Sisson, a pivotal figure in the ancestral health movement for over two decades. They discuss the critical components of longevity, focussing upon the importance of balance, nutrition, and movement, particularly walking. Mark shares insights from his new book, "Born to Walk," highlighting how walking can be a more effective and sustainable exercise strategy compared to running, especially for those looking to improve their health and energy levels. KEY TAKEAWAYS Walking for Longevity and Health: Walking is a fundamental human activity, supporting balance, digestion, lymphatic health, and mental well-being. Diet and Metabolic Flexibility: Centering meals around protein and achieving metabolic flexibility through lower-carb diets supports energy and fat burning. Importance of Collagen: Collagen supports joint health, skin elasticity, and overall recovery, making it a crucial supplement for active individuals.
