Ben and Rob phone ‘Frankie Freako', the latest low budget creature feature from Steven Kostanski that completes an unofficial trilogy of modern cult chaos. Made with rubber puppets, absurd creature designs and pure genre conviction, Frankie Freako leans hard into the legacy of VHS era monsters, late night cable movies and franchises like Ghoulies, while proving once again that small budgets and big ideas can still thrive outside the studio system. Is Frankie Freako a love letter to genre movie making or a deliberate test of audience patience; how does low budget filmmaking become a strength rather than a limitation; and where does this sit alongside his winning movie Psycho Goreman? Is this the perfect example of love it or hate it niche storytelling; and what does Frankie Freako really mean in a landscape where safe films dominate and weird voices struggle to survive?CONSUUUME to find out all of this and much, much more!PLUS! In 1984, producer Steven Spielberg, writer Chris Columbus, and director Joe Dante brought a new breed of cuddly creatures to the big screen, hoping to draw in fans of other odd critters like Yoda and E.T. The star of this film is the adorable "mogwai" (Chinese for "devil") named Gizmo, who propagates some very odd offspring that terrorize a small town on Christmas Eve. Released the same weekend as Ghostbusters, this horror-comedy was a hit with audiences, earning $212 million on an $11 million budget. The flick spawned a 1990 sequel, subtitled The New Batch, and a TV series, with a forthcoming third film, Secrets of the Mogwai, in the works. On the merchandising side, the Gizmo plush became an instant hit as one of the top toys of Christmas '84. And, of course, there were plenty of knock-offs, from Critters, to Munchies, to Ghoulies. Perhaps most notably, the film's violence and gore, packaged in family-friendly wrapping paper, led to the creation of a new MPAA rating category: PG-13. But forty-one years later, are we still going gaga for Gremlins? Or have these vicious vermin overstayed their welcome like unruly in-laws at the holidays? This week we watched Ghoulies go to College. We talked about the panty raid, don't read books out loud, Miller Lite, and do we like talking Ghoulies or not?
Og Sonny serverer Larry Cohens mutantbaby-svanesang: 'It's Alive III: Island of the Alive' (1987).

In this episode it was Josh's turn to pick a movie for the guys to watch and chat about. He got so excited that he completely forgot about the ban on Charles Band movies that the FM3 made a blood oath on just mere episodes ago. But instead of choosing something else Brian, Jef and Josh dive dick first into the deep dark dumpster that holds The Charles Band Archives and resurfaced with "The Dungeonmaster" from 1984. Listeners you too can play at home in the Chuck Band Dumpster and watch Richard Moll and the Fondacaro brothers get horribly underused and at the same time see some of John Carl Buechler's Troll and Ghoulies puppet rejects, and really what more could you ask from a "horror" movie?

This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Zach back on the show as they discuss the 1985 Horror (?) Comedy (?) Ghoulies. Halloween in August continues on as we discuss this Gremlins rip-off that doesn't have a lot going for it. The cast isn't much to speak of and the special effects are even less so, but we push ahead and try to point out any of the good parts of this one. We will get into the inner workings of satanic cults and green-eyed contact lenses. Of course we spend most of the time ripping this one apart. Enjoy the podcast.
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Zach back on the podcast to discuss what they were up to this week. Ghoulies is coming this Wednesday

Physical media serves up some classics as well as some that deserve more modern classic status. Peter Sobczynski may disagree with some of them but he joins Erik Childress again this week to bring you the latest and greatest. They include a restored series from Francois Truffaut as well as some oddities involving Fred MacMurray and the “involvement” of The Three Stooges. There are sequels for Robocop and the Ghoulies as well as some more WWII hijinks for Brad Pitt. One of the great westerns of all-time is up for debate. Mike's pencil is sharpened and Tom's memory is ready because it's time to pitch sequels to the Ghoulies series! You'll hear which of us was so excited by the prospect of more Ghoulie movie that he created two pitches, which of us decided to follow the model of a 1943 original film starring a famous animal, which of us drew inspiration from Scream 3 but should of drawn inspiration from Wes Craven's New Nightmare and one sequel pitch that was the obvious choice for any movie series heading into a fifth film. Enjoy! Thanks to our monthly supporters Matt and Vicki S Kate Lampe Daniel Prudhoe Steve Weiss Matthew Aldrich Edward Lankford Heather Sahami
We may be sleeping in our cars but we've got our thoughts locked and loaded in case we wake up because we watched the 1994 sequel Ghoulies IV! You'll hear exactly how many porn movies Mr. Wynorski may or may not have directed as well as some of their glorious titles, what we think of both the positive and negative representations for women in this film and questions about how you summon a Faust and how that accidentally brings the completely non-essential titular ghoulies into your story. Enjoy! Thanks to our monthly supporters Matt and Vicki S Kate Lampe Daniel Prudhoe Steve Weiss Matthew Aldrich Edward Lankford Heather Sahami
We've got our beers and have planned our yanks, which are our cranks, which, of course, are our pranks as seen in the 1991 sequel, Ghoulies Go to College! Actually, it may be Ghoulies III or could even be Ghoulies III: Ghoulies Go to College; we're not sure but the important thing is we're bringing it to you. You'll hear how impressed we are with the number of knowable cast members, an immediate digression into the world of copyright law and Pat Riley for some reason and questions about who becomes or if anyone becomes a giant ghoulie that must be destroyed by the end of this film. Enjoy! Thanks to our monthly supporters Kate Lampe Daniel Prudhoe Steve Weiss Matthew Aldrich Edward Lankford Heather Sahami
Our next series titular characters may live in the toilet but that's not necessarily where we think the movies belong as we rank and declare for the Ghoulies series! You'll find out which movie ranks at the top of both our lists, which movie sits in the middle of both our lists and the degree to which we both feel the movie at the bottom of our lists belongs there. Have fun! We sure did. Thanks to our monthly supporters Kate Lampe Daniel Prudhoe Steve Weiss Matthew Aldrich Edward Lankford Heather Sahami

We love tiny terrors so much on this show that we could barely wait to discuss another classic, 1985's GHOULIES! While perhaps slightly less bombastic as the sequel, the original entry in the Ghoulies franchise is still full of delightfully absurd moments and a ton of pint-sized pain. We may have had to wait until the next installment to see a Ghoulie eat a dude's ass, but it was perfectly foreshadowed with its predecessor, so let's show the OG some respect for its 40th birthday or the little butt-munchers will finally get us. In this episode of 'Two Guys in a Chainsaw', we dive into the cult classic 80s horror-comedy 'Ghoulies'. We explore listener Russ's request, reminiscing about the iconic VHS cover art and discussing the movie's bizarre blend of horror, comedy, and satanic cult themes. Topics include the awkward ritual scenes, the hilarious little creature puppets, and the unforgettable Grizzle and Greedy Gut. Don't miss this nostalgia-filled journey back to the golden age of video rentals and 80s horror!

This month's theme: Horror franchises "In SPACE". As we reminisce about the origins of the Critters franchise, comparing it to its contemporaries like Gremlins and Ghoulies, we also puzzle over this entry's plot, performances, and oddly serious tone. Why is Terrence Mann's character suddenly a jerk? And where the f*ck did all the critters go? Listen as we highlight standout performances from surprising actors like Brad Dourif and Angela Bassett (?!) in this low-budget sequel. Despite its shortcomings, we hope you find this a hilarious and engaging review perfect for fans of horror franchises that go TO SPACE!
