In this episode, JP and Richard explore how the “fat kid at school” (Richard's own description) ends up becoming an aerobics instructor, gym owner and then a national leader of the exercise industry, who goes on to sit on boards that influence the global advancements in our professional standards. Incredibly, due to Richard's passionate, rapid-fire speaking style, they still had time to discuss why New Zealand has arguably the friendliest exercise conference on Earth, what the kiwis do best, Richard's message to all trainers, and his current intensely felt desire to educate government to see exercise as the most financially efficient health measure to introduce to all western populations. Enjoy this powerful discussion with a global leader in the industry. Richard is the CEO of ExerciseNZ with a background in exercise facility management and ownership. He sits on multiple global boards including HFA (formerly IHRSA), World Active & ICREPs. He holds a B.Sc in statistics, and an MBA, and has a passion for advocating for the exercise industry.
Chris Craytor took on a significant challenge when joining the board of IHRSA, the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association. At a time when raising funds was particularly difficult, Craytor played a key role in steering the organization towards a stronger focus on advocacy, education, and research. With the strategic hire of Liz Clark as CEO, Craytor helped pivot IHRSA—now known as the Health and Fitness Association—towards these critical areas. This shift was underscored by the COVID pandemic, which signifcantly heightened awareness among club operators about the importance of advocacy. Craytor envisions increased efforts to influence state-level legislation, recognizing that many crucial battles for the industry are won and lost at the local level. Chris and host Pete Moore discuss a range of topics crucial to the fitness industry, including managing member relationships, especially within the Medicare Advantage community, and the critical role of customer retention. Chris shares his innovative approach to business by addressing personal and professional challenges and emphasizes the significance of strong leadership. They also explore the ever-evolving landscape of health insurance, exercise and its impact on long-term health, and the importance of preventative care covered by groups like Medicare and Medicaid. Chris also highlights the rapid growth in insurance-based memberships and the challenges and solutions provided by Welld Health, a leading software platform connecting health clubs to healthcare payers. Key themes discussed Discussing importance of active voter participation and issues. ACAC founded with inclusive, community-focused approach. Layering AI in medical data for reimbursement. Software companies require 5-year SaaS agreements. States for ACAC business expansion in 36 months. Clean database, streamline member files, reduce rejection. Popular programs offer competitive advantages in business. A few key takeaways: 1. Medicare Advantage Programs and Revenue Potential: Health clubs can significantly benefit by targeting the Medicare Advantage community. Large chains have the potential to generate millions of dollars monthly through these programs. 2. Customer Retention and Leadership: Effective customer retention efforts are crucial for clubs. Finding the right individual within the club to manage these efforts can make a significant difference. The role of a Chief Revenue Officer was highlighted as potentially beneficial for improving accounting processes and overall efficiency. 3. ACAC's Inclusive and Comprehensive Approach: Chris shared insights into ACAC Fitness and Wellness, which operates on a larger format with high-end amenities. Their approach to inclusiveness, medical programs, physician referrals, and partnerships with doctors and hospitals sets them apart. The emphasis on tracking member outcomes and offering first-class service above their middle-market price point further highlights their differentiation. 4. Health and Fitness Advocacy: The rebranding of IHRSA as the Health and Fitness Association underscores a new focus on political advocacy, education, and research. Project 435, for example, aims to have a club captain advocating for health clubs in each of the 435 congressional districts, showcasing the importance of grassroots advocacy within the sector. 5. Challenges and Benefits of Health Insurance Integration: The podcast also shed light on the integration of health insurance with fitness clubs, particularly the challenges around eligibility verification, member management, and reconciliation. Software platforms like Welld Health play a critical role in reducing rejection rates and bad data, ultimately saving significant revenue for clubs. The ability to run long-term medical programs via partnerships with YMCA's and medical centers further illustrates the evolving landscape of preventative healthcare coverage. Greta Wagner is a seasoned fitness industry veteran with over four decades of experience in the HALO (Health, Active Lifestyle, Outdoor) space. A current Board Member of the Health & Fitness Assocation (formerly IHRSA), and Executive Director of Chelsea Piers, her journey began at the age of 16, when she started teaching what used to be called "aerobic dance." After a decade-long hiatus in the golf industry, her return to fitness was marked by a pivotal realization: The sector had seen little growth and was still grappling with engaging the same 80% of people who do not participate in regular exercise or attend fitness clubs. Her career reflects both her adaptability and enduring passion for promoting a healthier lifestyle. Greta shares her invaluable perspectives on fostering inclusivity, broadening communication, and the significance of a positive work culture that transcends beyond just having state-of-the-art facilities. Also discussed are the pressures of athleticism on young kids, branding excellence of Chelsea Piers, and innovative ideas for advocacy in the health and fitness sector. We'll hear about the challenges of maintaining client attention, and the evolving landscape of video and streaming technology. Finally, we'll look at leveraging competition and technology to drive member engagement and success. This episode is packed with valuable insights from an industry veteran on leadership, resilience, and the collective effort required to drive meaningful change in our space. On workplace culture, Wagner states, "I can't dictate what company culture is gonna be. I can hope what our culture is gonna be. We can say 'this is what our strategic plan is to make our culture,' but it's our actions, and it's how we live our lives in every moment while we're working together, playing together, socializing together, and our principles and core values. If you stay true to those and you hire the people who believe in those core values and can live it . . . that will resonate. In my opinion, that is everything." Key themes discussed IHRSA (and the industry's) challenges during the pandemic. 10-year summer camp experience, impact of sports. Workplace culture, branding, employee focus, values. Private, non-institutional company, unique KPIs. Monitoring retention and valuing employee contributions. The evolving role of the Health & Fitness Association. A few key takeaways: 1. Greta emphasizes that a positive and inclusive work culture is crucial for any business's success, especially in the HALO space. She illustrates this by highlighting Chelsea Piers' commitment to their core values and how it translates into meaningful connections with customers and a happy, long time, dedicated workforce. 2. She emphasizes the importance of open conversations, organization, and effective messaging to address societal and political divisions. Enhancing communication and education within the club environment can foster unity and collective growth. 3. Both Moore and Wagner stress the significance of offering a variety of sports to children, rather than early specialization. This approach helps in reducing pressure and optimizing overall athletic development, allowing kids to explore various interests and skills. 4. Pete asks about leveraging the large membership base of clubs collectively for advocacy efforts. Collecting a small contribution per member per year, as Pete suggests, could significantly bolster financial capabilities for important advocacy initiatives at local, state, and federal levels. 5. Greta discusses the resilience of Chelsea Piers during natural disasters, highlighting the collaborative effort of employees and members to rebuild the property. This underscores the solid and caring culture of the company, which is pivotal in navigating crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. Click here to download transcript. Host Pete Moore sits down with Kevin and delves into how the Atlantic Club took the challenging COVID-19 shutdown as an opportunity to completely rethink and transform their business model and facilities. Kevin provides an in-depth look at the strategic decisions and renovations that not only helped them recover post-COVID but have also positioned them for future success. From creating a spacious new fitness layout to establishing a booming pickleball center, Kevin reveals the honest conversations, tough decisions, and innovative thinking that went into revitalizing the space. This episode is packed with insights on leadership, member engagement, and trend-setting in the fitness industry. "If you left the club in 2022, the new Atlantic Club today is nothing like it was. We're a brand new club, brand new progress, brand new facilities, brand new equipment . . . and it was all about being ready so we could be where we need to be in 2025," stresses McHugh. Key themes discussed Adapting business during COVID, modifying facilities for safety. Transitioning the space to unify community and improve facilities. Listed 20 areas of potential complaints, addressed each. Decision making: Data, gut, conviction, and trust your community. Advocating for Health & Fitness Association (formerly IHRSA) and networking for trends. Excited for the future of Health and Fitness Association. A few key takeaways: 1. The pandemic provided an involuntary pause that allowed the Atlantic Club to rethink and redesign their entire business model and campus layout. This included implementing social distancing measures by moving the free weight equipment to a separate area and creating spacious cardio and group exercise rooms. 2. Management did not shy away from making bold decisions, such as converting the gymnasium into a spinning studio and later into a comprehensive fitness area. They anticipated and managed short-term pain for long-term gain, with the goal of better positioning themselves for the future. 3. Kevin emphasized the importance of effectively communicating changes to both staff and members. They involved managers in the planning process, addressed potential complaints ahead of time, and made sure everyone understood the long-term vision and benefits of the renovations. 4. The Atlantic Club's approach was holistic, addressing not only fitness but also mental wellness, refreshment areas, and personal training. The introduction of services like a high-intensity studio, personalized training studios, and pickleball courts (in place of a turf center) showcased their commitment to offering varied experiences for members. 5. McHugh also underscored the value of staying connected with industry peers through platforms like the Health & Fitness Association (formerly IHRSA.) Leveraging insights and trends from other successful operators helped refine their strategy and supported the rationale for their bold moves. Chris Craytor's journey with IHRSA, now formally known as the Health and Fitness Association, is a story of transformation and strategic development. When Craytor first joined the board, he was immediately faced with the challenge of fundraising for advocacy—a task that was met with more rejections than approvals. Despite the difficulty in securing even modest contributions, his determination did not wane. Recognizing the newly imperative need for advocacy given what happened to fitness clubs nationwide during COVID, Craytor was instrumental in making a pivotal decision. He championed the hiring of seasoned political veteran, Liz Clark as CEO, a strategic move that was aimed at bolstering the organization's commitment to advocacy. Under this new leadership, the team's vision for the association began to crystallize, expanding its foundational pillars to include not only advocacy but also education and research. Today, thanks to the tenacity and forward-thinking approach of leaders like Clark and Craytor, the Health and Fitness Association is poised as a multifaceted entity dedicated to the betterment of the industry it serves. As exciting things continue to happen on the healthcare side, Craytor states, "This industry has been waiting for preventative health care to get covered for a long time. What we're seeing out there is programs and services being covered by payers that typically haven't been from those types of groups that are typically not losing their customers." Key themes discussed Encouraging member participation in fundraising. Creating inclusive community-driven health club with programs. Clubs managing referrals and effectively onboarding new members. Health insurance industry expanding coverage to prevention. Clubs benefit from streamlining and profit maximization. A few key takeaways: 1. Chris details the success of WELLD in connecting health clubs with healthcare payers, allowing clubs to tap into insurance-based programs, such as those through Medicare Advantage. These memberships are growing at a rapid pace and offer significant financial potential to health clubs that can manage the complexities involved in administering these programs. 2. WELLD's platform has shown impressive results in reducing rejection rates for claims, with one large client reducing their rates to 0.12%, significantly minimizing revenue loss. This exemplifies the importance of efficient data management and processing in health club operations. 3. Craytor sheds light on the comprehensive onboarding process and the diverse amenities that modern health clubs offer. From employing nurses for health assessments to providing a range of physical activities and amenities like aquatics, spas, and racquet sports, clubs are becoming more inclusive and health-focused. 4. Chris and Pete also cover the shift towards more preventative health care measures, especially covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and retiree plans, reflecting a broader trend in the industry. This evolution requires health clubs to adapt, offering more health and wellness programs that align with these preventive health initiatives. 5. The transformation of IHRSA into the Health and Fitness Association (HFA) and the creation of advocacy groups highlight the industry's stronger focus on advocacy, education, and research. The discussion encapsulates challenges such as consensus-building within the industry for advocacy efforts and the difficulty in securing legislative support for initiatives like getting HSA and FSA dollars to cover health club memberships. Welcome to the first episode of The Happier Life Project 2024! January is often associated with cold weather and short, dreary days. And there are many reasons why we might struggle. The financial aftermath of all the Christmas costs, if you're self-employed the dreaded tax return, trying to set New Year's resolutions when you're not sure what you want the new year to have in store, the pressure to embark on dry January, the feeling you have to diet after all the Christmas feasting... and the misery of believing you have to set your alarm to get up extra early (when it's still dark!) to hit the gym, or a class, and punish your body for cutting loose in December. According to the IHRSA, the Global Health & Fitness Association, 12% of all gym sign-ups happen in January, while the rest of the year accounts for an average of 8.3% of sign-ups. And 80% of people who sign up for a gym membership in January will cancel their membership within five months... welcome to the January gym rush! So why do so many of us fall off the workout wagon? Dan Hancock, aka the mental health PT, is pretty confident he knows the answer. Frustrated by the lack of mental health support available for gym goers, Dan took it upon himself to create the world's first Mental Health & Exercise Coaching Certification for Personal Trainers, which is revitalising the health of millions across the U.K. In this episode of The Happier Life Project Dan shares why so many people struggle to sustain the abundance of 'new year, new me' fitness and diet plans. Dan also discusses why the gym floor is so cathartic and how exercise plays such a vital role in our mental health. The mental health PT offers tips on how to seek out the right personal trainer to meet your individual needs, and explains why PT's need to be better equipped and educated to help a person with their overall health, including mental and emotional support. And best of all, Dan will get you excited to move! Amy Bantham began her career in the late nineties as a group exercise instructor, a role she quickly fell in love with. While working in management consulting, she realized that it was teaching group exercise during her lunch hour that truly brought her joy and drive. This eventually led her to begin working with the main industry trade group, IHRSA (International Health, Racquet & Sports Association) for over a decade where she focused on advocacy, health promotion, and health policy. During her tenure, she played a crucial role in establishing the IHRSA Foundation, which allowed her to further her passion for expanding access to physical activity opportunities. This sparked her desire to pursue a Doctor of Public Health degree, a journey that took three years. Through her impressive career and educational background, Amy has become a dedicated advocate for promoting physical activity and improving public health. About the Daily Mile initiative, she states, "This was an elementary school, in-school physical activity intervention. I did focus groups for them where I talked with 50 administrators, teachers, parents, and community advocates and really tried to understand what were their pain points . . .what did the kids need? What did the teachers need? And how the Daily Mile as a program might be able to help teachers teach and kids learn more about the role that physical activity played there." Some key moments: Passion for fitness leads to advocacy work. Consider community impact. Evaluate program, understand barriers, improve health outcomes. Field trips to local health clubs for kids? Specialists can register with schools for training. A few key takeaways: Amy's focus is on expanding access to physical activity opportunities and creating a "movement of movement." She believes in partnering with organizations and individuals who align with her mission of helping people live healthier and more active lives. Works with organizations that focus on various age groups, from elementary schools to older adults, and values innovation in the field. Assistance in reframing programming: Amy and her team provide support and resources for individuals who want to reframe their programming and schedules. They help with outdoor workouts in parks and provide guidance, conviction, and resources for those who want to make positive changes in their communities. Click here to download transcript. Once the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, clubs across the U.S. were put in a perilous position. Many were shut down for extended periods of time. The situation created a need for club leaders to have their voices heard through political advocacy. Liz Clark, the CEO and president of IHRSA, recently sat down with Club Solutions Magazine Podcast host Rachel Zabonick-Chonko to talk about the work Clark and her organization are doing to boost the industry's voice in Washington D.C. and at the state and local levels. Listen to the conversation here.
Jane Curth is a passionate individual who has made a significant impact in the field of education and personal training. With a background as a professor in kinesiology, she specialized in online education and was recognized as a finalist for a state award for excellence in online teaching. It was during her teaching career that she identified a pain point in the industry and decided to take action. Jane's idea was to create a personal training course at the college level, allowing students to earn college credit while also providing them with a potential part-time job opportunity that offered a decent hourly wage. However, she faced numerous obstacles in getting the course approved, enduring months of red tape. Realizing that she needed to regain her personal training certification in order to teach the course effectively, Jane dedicated herself to retaking the exam. This experience further fueled her determination to address the pain point she had identified earlier. As a result, she founded FitFixNow, a company aimed at revolutionizing the personal training industry. With her expertise in education and personal training, she seeks to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical application, providing students and professionals with comprehensive and accessible training programs. On the ever increasing need for education for the senior community, Curth states, "Given my background in education and being a former professor, we were contacted by Strong Over 50 to be their education provider, to create the courses, to get them on our learning management system, and to work together with them to continue to create courses. And we found out at IHRSA that there were several companies that were interested in having continuing education linked with their product." Some key moments: Her journey led to FitFixNow. A pain point was identified. Increased desire for expanding options in fitness. "Progress in healthcare towards prevention and cost-effectiveness?" What matters to your peer group when exercising? A few key takeaways: 1: Jane Curth, a veteran in the industry, discusses her journey from being a professor of kinesiology to starting FitFixNow, an online continuing education platform for fitness professionals. 2: FitFixNow aims to make continuing education for fit pros affordable, convenient, and of high quality. They offer courses in various specialty areas such as behavior change and working with special populations. 3: Jane also highlights the importance of personal trainers expanding their skill sets and certifications to offer a wider range of services. She believes that specialized certifications, such as in nutrition or working with specific populations like Parkinson's, can greatly enhance a trainer's value and impact. 4: SilverSneakers, a program with over 18 million members, is discussed as an ancillary revenue source for health clubs and a way to reach a population that may not traditionally purchase a gym membership. Jane mentions her involvement as a SilverSneakers model and the positive impact the program has on seniors' health and well-being. Click here to download transcript.
