In 2005, Blythe Hill began paying attention to the issue of human trafficking. Even with a deep sense of urgency to help, Blythe felt helpless. She wasn't a lawyer, doctor, or social worker; her interests and talents were in fashion, trend analysis, and blogging. She believed she had nothing much to offer to the fight. But in 2009, out of boredom, Blythe challenged herself to wear a dress every day in December. Each year that has followed, more and more people have joined Blythe's one-person challenge, and now it's become an international movement. To date, Dressember campaigns have raised over 16 million dollars to fight against human trafficking. CEO and Founder of Dressember Foundation, Blyth Hill, joins Christopher and Heather to share the power of a dress.

Avoiding controversy for the sake of comfort is not an option for you as you lead, do life, and rumble with all the big and little decisions before you.   Sure, you do not want to contribute to the noise.   You are not looking for a fight (or, like me, you try not to get scrappy just to offload some stress), or to be right just for the sake of being right.   No. You value the big picture. You value the mission. You value the greater impact.   These days, people try to shock us just so they can manipulate our feelings. They use hyperbole to exercise power over us. The polarizations we are living with internally and in our culture lead to many having serious controversy fatigue.   Unburdened leaders get the nuance of standing up. They also understand the sacrifices.  They would rather step up for what is true than play it safe.   We all need to do a better job of respecting this kind of leadership by supporting those who are willing to and able to take the heat when the status quo threatens the integrity of important work and fosters dehumanization.   That's why I'm thrilled to introduce you to today's guest, Blythe Hill.   Blythe is the CEO and Founder of the Dressember Foundation, an anti-trafficking nonprofit organization. My guest for The Happy Hour #219 is Blythe Hill. Blythe is the CEO/Founder of the Dressember Foundation and is passionate about ending human trafficking. What started as a personal style challenge in 2009 to wear a dress each day for a month, Dressember grew beyond her immediate circle and five years later, thousands of people across the world have helped raise over $5M toward the fight to end human trafficking. Blythe and I start off the show talking about how Blythe's eyes were opened to human trafficking. She describes how she felt an overwhelming sense of urgency to do something combined with an overwhelming feeling of powerlessness. Blythe describes how she even considered going against her internal "wiring" to start a new career in hopes to make a difference. But, instead she put the talents God gifted her with to use and started Dressember. I loved hearing Blythe talk about how Dressember took off. Her first campaign goal in 2013 was $25k, but you guys they reached that in just 3 days! And now Dressember 2018 hopes to raise $3 million to fight human trafficking - how incredible is that? We get to hear about the amazing partners she works with and how they fight trafficking from so many angles. Blythe also shares her own story of abuse and how Dressember and #metoo has all intersected for her. I really appreciated hearing her discuss the spectrum of consent, the shame women feel, and how we have to be women who believe and trust each other and not be afraid to get help. Friends, I loved my conversation with Blythe for so many reasons, and I am so proud of the work she's doing. I've included resources below that can help in educating yourself more about human trafficking - it truly happens everywhere. And there are so many ways to be involved with Dressember - join a team, wear a dress, raise awareness, and more!  I also hope that if you have an idea or feel God nudging you in a direction, you feel encouraged to follow that nudge - God can do so much more than we could ever imagine. {You can listen to the show HERE, and make sure you never miss a Happy Hour, subscribe using your favorite podcast app (ie. iTunes, Google Play).  And of course, I would love if you would share with your friends!} Links from the Show Dressember Website: find resources, start a fundraising team and more! To many people, a dress symbolizes things like fragility, weakness, inequality, outdated dress code rules, societal pressures, gender roles… There was a time when a woman would be literally scoffed at for wearing anything OTHER than a dress. And for centuries, women have fought to press on and buck trends and fight stereotypes, and obviously a woman wearing pants or wearing shorts isn’t thought of as anything crazy or remarkable today… but could a woman wearing a dress actually change the world? Could the “dress” be reclaimed into a symbol of power and freedom and purpose? We think so…  My guest this week is Blythe Hill, the founder of DRESSEMBER, an international movement of women and men who are raising money to fight to end human trafficking. I wanted to hear Blythe’s story and learn about how she got this incredibly amazing movement started and I LOVED our conversation! Blythe Hill is the Founder and CEO of Dressember, a crowdfunding foundation working to raise awareness and provide anti-trafficking grants for organizations who are working to end human trafficking. What started as a personal style challenge in 2009 grew into an opportunity to align a cause near to Blythe's heart with wearing a dress. Blythe asked women (and men) to join her in wearing a dress, or a necktie, every day for the month of December in order to raise awareness and funds for human trafficking. These funds are then passed on to organizations that serve as boots on the ground to alleviate trafficking worldwide. Naturally, she named the campaign Dressember. Blythe never had any intention of starting a nonprofit. She was happily working for a small trend forecast magazine, and leading a movement was the furthest thing from her mind. In this episode, Blythe and Nada get into the weeds discussing the different operational and fundraising structures of nonprofits. Blythe shares the importance of being self-aware and identifying your strengths when determining how best to structure your own fundraising and operational efforts. Although the Dressember campaign is a fun challenge, it highlights a very dark reality that exists in the US and throughout the world. Blythe shares the statistics of human trafficking and opens our eyes to just how manipulative and insidious these crimes of enslavement are. Blythe opens up about the growth period Dressemeber is in and how they are working hard to increase their fundraising efforts to expand their network of grant partnerships. She reminds all those who want to start a life-changing organization that the day to day operations don’t always feel like you are saving the world, but growing the message and the organization are worth the hard work. Blythe Hill is the founder and CEO of the Dressember Foundation. Dressember is a month long challenge where you are encouraged to wear a dress or tie during the month of December in order to raise awareness and money toward the issue of sex trafficking.  Blythe did something different. She decided to wear a dress everyday during December. Something that seemed personal and innocent at first, but quickly grew into a trend that spread year by year. At first it was her friends that joined in, and then it was friends of friends. Slowly, a movement started taking off. And then Blythe decided to do something bold. She decided to tie this movement with a cause she cared about. For her it was human sex trafficking. A topic that she thought she was unqualified for as somebody working in fashion analysis. The truth is that she never really thought that she’d ever be able to help, other than some small $20 donations every month. But she did something that felt right to her and made it into something bigger than her. A movement that has made an impact bigger than Blythe could have ever imagined.     Find Blythe Online: Website - http://www.dressember.org/ Facebook - officialdressember Instagram - @dressember Twitter - @dressember   Some Questions I Ask: What was the point where you decided to turn this into a business?
