Plus, is this another movie where the sports-romance is not between the obvious characters? Just sayin'.

Today Ali and Asif discuss the Netflix docuseries ‘Beckham' (1:40). They start off by going over when they first heard about David Beckham, including a mention of the cult classic movie ‘Bend it Like Beckham'. They then discuss the genesis of the series, how David Beckham himself wanted to do it, and how actor Fisher Stevens came on board as a director. They talk about the structure of the series, Fisher Stevens' directorial style and the fact that Beckham did not have final cut on the show. Ali and Asif then go over who comes off well and who does not in the doc. Finally they give their overall thoughts on the show and David Beckham himself. Then, since David's wife, Victoria, suffers from PCOS aka Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, the guys then discuss this disorder (30:18). Asif goes over the common symptoms and how it represents hormonal dysregulation in the body, leading to menstrual problems, infertility and a masculine physical appearance. Asif then talks about how it is diagnosed and what tests your doctor can order. He then goes over the treatment, including the scary sounding “ laparoscopic ovarian drilling”. Producer's note: When we prepped Jordan's new intro to this amazing interview from April of '22, I had jotted something down like, "who could have dreamed back then that he'd go on to win all the awards." Jordan rightly called this out, because (as she says here) she, and other critics, DID dream that. What I'd meant was: it seemed like one of those performances and films that you hope will be both lauded AND awarded, but you aren't holding your breath for the latter. How thrilling to be wrong sometimes.Watch Ke Huy Quan accept his Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.***As a kid, he was Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Data in The Goonies. This week we are talking about 2002 sports comedy-drama Bend it Like Beckham with our guest Maria! Bend it Like Beckham follows Jess, a talented football player. Instead of wanting to be like her older sister, who is preparing to be a traditional Indian wife, young Jess dreams of playing soccer professionally like her hero David Beckham. Wholeheartedly against Jess' unorthodox ambition, her parents eventually reveal that their reservations have more to do with protecting her than with holding her back. When Jess is forced to make a choice between tradition and her beloved sport, her family must decide whether to let her chase her dream...and a soccer ball. In this episode, Miriam (@Miriam Walker-Khan) talks to Markus Fjortoft (@MarkusFjortoft) and Ciaran McKenna (@CiaranMcKenna8) about the legacy of the film “Bend it Like Beckham”, and what inspired her to make a short documentary about the film 20 years on from its release date. We discussed that despite the skepticism at the time about hiring an Indian female as the lead character & targeting the British Asian community as an audience; the film became the highest grossing football film ever, and not only resonated with the British Asian community, but became highly popular among all demographics of people. Furthermore, we spoke about both the progress made within football for British Asian females, and what more can still be done, the growth of England's Women's Super League, as well as about Miriam's own journey through sports journalism and what the future holds for her. On this episode, Alex & Anna interview English, Japanese rapper, singer and producer, Miso Extra. Just like umami, the addictive fifth flavor that we all love so dearly, so is her music. As she so perfectly put it herself, it's that flavor / sound that you can't get enough of but also can't quite put your finger on. With decadent n delicious production, Miso Extra is regaining and reclaiming her Asian identity through her ability to communicate in both English and Japanese. She tells us, “If you use humor, or if you can disguise things in a way that people find accessible, they're more likely to pay attention.” And people are definitely paying attention to her... played across the UK airwaves and around Japan, her nimble bangers have already arrived on the US scene and are sure to be unstoppable. Miso is reassuring listeners that it's okay to hold multiple identities… in fact it's actually a secret weapon and what makes for a person with great taste. You can find her everywhere @Miso Extra. The 1994 Broadway season was highlighted by the industry-shaking arrival of the stage adaptation of Disney's Beauty and the Beast - an otherwise unremarkable show which nonetheless changed the way musicals got made from that point forward. Previous successful movie-to-stage musical transformations of the '80s and '90s - including Kiss of the Spider Woman, Nine, Grand Hotel, and Little Shop of Horrors - are discussed, plus the complications around turning Beauty and the Beast into a live-action product, and all the lessons Disney learned from this endeavor. Since '94, it has been a parade of these sorts of shows, with decidedly mixed results - musical versions of Back to the Future, Mean Girls, Rocky, Dave, Bend it Like Beckham, Debbie Does Dallas, Silence of the Lambs and, of course, Lin-Manuel Miranda's Bring It On get a hard look from the hosts.
