On the night of January 27, 1983 John Duffield fell asleep to his television in his bedroom. His wife, Carole, was a nurse who worked the night shift, so sleeping alone was something that he had grown accustomed to, and why the droning noise of the television kept him company. But in the early morning hours he was awoken by the worst sound a parent could hear. He heard the frantic calls and moans of pain from his 15 year old son Paul, whom he knew had fallen asleep on the couch in the family living room. He rushed downstairs to his son and found him unresponsive and in a large pool of his own blood, a massive wound to his head. John could barely process what was happening. He was in shock. He rushed to the phone to call 911…but the phone lines were dead. He had no idea that the chaos of that night had only just begun. This enjoyable and spontaneous episode tells the ages-long story of how three very different women can be blessed to share the same bond, banter and beliefs. Debra Talley, Mary Anne Oglesby-Sutherly and Sue Duffield understand the meaning of significance and purpose in their mature years, but none of that happens without humor and the joy of not taking themselves seriously! The one commonality that they all have is a desire to make a difference in the dementia world. Also shared on this episode is The Veranda's Annual "A Christmas To Remember" - a benefit concert and Marketplace, taking place at Three Oaks Church, Gallatin, TN on Monday evening, December 2nd, 2025 with doors opening at 5pm. Edward Duffield (1730–1803) was a colonial Philadelphia clockmaker, whose elegant brass, mahogany, and walnut timekeepers stand proudly in major American museums and collections. Duffield, unlike other leather-apron ‘mechanics,' was born rich and owned a country estate, Benfield, and many more properties. He was deeply involved in civic and church affairs during crucial years in American history—his lifelong close friend, Benjamin Franklin, was staying at Duffield's Benfield estate when Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams first discussed the Declaration of Independence. Sally, Franklin's daughter, brought her family there for extended periods during the Revolution and Franklin's wife, Deborah, was best friends for fifty years with Duffield's mother-in-law. Duffield was even one of three executors of Franklin's will. In Edward Duffield: Philadelphia Clockmaker, Citizen, Gentleman, 1730-1803 (American Philosophical Society Press, 2024), Bob Frishman catalogs and describes seventy-one known Duffield clocks and instruments and reveals how, during the mid-eighteenth century, they largely were not fabricated from scratch by isolated individuals. He contends that Duffield and his fellow clockmakers were not furniture-makers; they were mechanical artisans whose complex metal machines rang the hours and steadily ticked inside wooden cases made by others. Existing books on Philadelphia clocks have focused on these artifacts as furniture, including their woodwork, cabinetmakers, and decorative aspects. However, Frishman, a professional horologist for nearly four decades, brings his vast expertise to bear on this first comprehensive study of Duffield's life and work. Far more than a treatise on pre-industrial horological timekeeping, this book tells the compelling stories of a man, a city, and an era, while deepening our appreciation for Duffield's stately sentinels—often a colonial American family's most valuable possession—and the times and places in which their makers lived. Bob Frishman has professionally repaired nearly 8,000 timepieces and sold more than 1,700 vintage clocks and watches. As a scholar of horology, and assisted by a personal library of 900 books on the subject, he has published more than 100 articles and reviews in Maine Antique Digest, Watch & Clock Bulletin, and elsewhere. Rosie Duffield quit the Labour Party less than 100 days after she was elected MP for Canterbury. She likened working under UK Prime Minister Kier Starmer to being in an “abusive relationship”. UnHerd's Freddie Sayers spoke to her in the aftermath of her ferocious condemnation of her former comrades. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
"A libertarian is someone who values freedom and usually political conceptions of freedom above most other values." Cameron interviews Will Duffield, a writer at the Cato Institute, discusses libertarianism, freedom, and the role of government in society. He shares his personal journey into politics and his belief in the value of individual liberty. Duffield explores the tension between wanting minimal government intervention and the desire to protect certain interests and prevent certain things from happening. He also discusses the importance of bottom-up governance, emergent solutions, and the concept of exit. Duffield emphasizes the need for more local variation and experimentation, allowing different communities to have their own rules and norms. Will Duffield discusses his college experience and the value of being able to customize his own education. He talks about the importance of education for the sake of learning and self-fulfillment, rather than just chasing a credential. Will also reflects on the challenges of transitioning from an activist milieu to a more professional setting and the tension between being a purist and making accommodations with state power. He emphasizes the need for continuous education in his field and the importance of staying informed about new laws and developments. The conversation explores the value of education, the importance of lifelong learning, and the role of the internet in knowledge acquisition. It delves into the significance of history in shaping our beliefs and understanding of the world. The discussion also touches on the challenges of free speech on the internet and the need for decentralized platforms. The conversation concludes with a reflection on pivotal moments in history and the potential for individuals to shape alternative futures. Follow Will on Twitter: @Will_Duffield Checkout his work with the Cato Institute.
This Trawl begins with a tribute to the late, great Dame Maggie Smith. Then, Marina and Jemma discuss two prominent political figures who have decided their parties aren't for them after all. Labour's Rosie Duffield has become an independent (which raises questions in itself) and Baroness Sayeeda Warsi has left the conservative party, which means she can be more forthright than before which she certainly is about Jenrick. Then it's off to Tory Party Conference where the mood is surprisingly buoyant given their recent thumping. The party members are all falling over themselves to proclaim which of the MPs running to be leader has got their vote. Despite saying maternity pay is 'excessive' Kemi Badenoch is getting the thumbs up from a lot of them and from many ministers too. Though does it count if it's from David Davis? Jemma and Marina are startled by quite a few of the things Kemi has said but not quite as startled as they were to hear about where Robert Jenrick got £75,000 from as a donation. Truss has made an appearance to tell everyone (again) that she's simply misunderstood, that her ideas were all marvellous and that she should have been left in power to further wreck the economy. While Jacob Rees Mogg is on hand to tell us all why we shouldn't be saying 'Chair' instead of Chairman......plus, something about wolves, I think. Hard to tell. There are underrated tweets of course, some of which involve Russell Brand baptising people in his under grundies. Trent gives us a run down on how he runs. The equipment he trusts in to keep him operating no matter what.
Trent and I do a double take as we examine what he has done that helps his business succeed and thrive. High end clientele and services to match. You don't see a lot of contractors on the East Coast offering lawn renovations, but when you do, I can garantee you that they know where the high value services are wanted
Trent moved from hospitality to lawn and gardens so he could run his own business and pursue excellence in every aspect.
